Real-time decision making is supported by data-hungry emerging technologies such as machine learning and digital twins. Innovations in manufacturing process control utilizing these technologies are constrained by interoperability. Marketing materials, sales pitches, and academic literature portray interoperability on the factory floor as seamless and robust. However, this study demonstrates that in spite of plentiful mature standards, interoperability on the factory floor is neither seamless nor robust. To exemplify interoperability in the context of an established and widely adopted standard, this study analyzes the interoperability of machine tools produced by a premier equipment builder which has exceeded US$1 billion in sales …

Atom-Chip Compatible Optical Lattice, Robert Leonard, Spencer E. Olson
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
A lattice beam configuration which results in an isotropic 3D trap near the surface of an atom chip is described. The lattice is formed near the surface of a reflectively coated atom chip, where three incident beams and three reflected beams intersect. The coherent interference of these six beams form a phase-stable optical lattice which extends to the surface of the atom chip. The lattice is experimentally realized and the trap frequency is measured. Degenerate Raman sideband cooling is performed in the optical lattice, cooling 80 million atoms to 1.1 μK.

Any failure in frontonasal development can lead to malformations at the middle facial region, such as frontonasal dysplasia, midfacial clefts, and hyper/hypotelorism. Various environmental factors influence morphogenesis through epigenetic regulations, including the action of noncoding microRNAs (miRNAs). However, it remains unclear how miRNAs are involved in the frontonasal development. In our analysis of publicly available miRNA-seq and RNA-seq datasets, we found that miR-28a-5p, miR-302a-3p, miR-302b-3p, and miR-302d-3p were differentially expressed in the frontonasal process during embryonic days 10.5 to 13.5 (E10.5–E13.5) in mice. Overexpression of these miRNAs led to a suppression of cell proliferation in cultured mouse embryonic frontonasal mesenchymal …

The U.S. Executive Order On Seabed Mining Is Consistent With International Law, James Kraska
International Law Studies
This article analyzes the legality of U.S. unilateral seabed mining authorized by Executive Order 14285, signed by President Donald Trump on April 24, 2025, permitting mineral extraction on the U.S. continental shelf and international deep seabed. Critics, including China, the European Union, and the International Seabed Authority, contend that this policy violates international law by circumventing Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which designates seabed minerals as the “common heritage of mankind” and mandates regulation through the ISA. The article asserts that, as a non-party to UNCLOS, the United States is not …

Background: Trauma is a leading cause of mortality, but injury-specific molecular targets remain largely unknown. We hypothesized that distinctive yet unrecognized tissue targets accessible to circulating ligands might emerge during trauma, thereby underscoring a trauma-related proteome.
Methods: We screened a peptide library to discover targets in a porcine model of major trauma: compound femur fracture with hemorrhagic shock. Bioinformatics yielded conserved motifs, and candidate receptors were affinity purified. In silico and in vitro approaches served to investigate possible associations between candidate receptors and calcium, a major component of skeletal muscle and bone. In vivo homing and molecular imaging (PET/MRI and …

Introduction: Multipotent Stromal Cells (MSCs) are utilized as therapeutic agents for addressing musculoskeletal conditions, including knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, major challenges in the clinical application include maintenance of the cells in the joint capsule. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is endogenous in synovial joints and commercially available as a joint lubricant. We tested the hypothesis that delivery of MSCs in HA into an OA rat knee model could improve outcomes.
Methods: Rat bone marrow MSCs were suspended in a commercially available HA paste, and cell viability measured with live/dead stains. Biomarkers for MSC chondrogenesis and osteogenesis were monitored with PCR. MSCs with …

The court granted the tenant's motion to dismiss a nonpayment case because the landlord could not produce a valid lease for the period in which the alleged arrears accrued. The landlord's argument that a "HUD Model Lease" provided for a perpetual lease was rejected by the court, which found that the rental amount changing from year to year made the lease indefinite on a material term. Consequently, with no lease in effect for the relevant time, the landlord could not maintain the nonpayment proceeding.

The diagnosis of chronic Chagas disease is challenging due to the wide genetic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, and low levels of parasitemia, resulting in low sensitivity and accuracy with existing diagnostics. We report a magneto-immunoassay that employs dually labeled magnetic beads incorporating a recombinant Tc24 antigen, which is homologous across multiple discrete typing units of T cruzi. In this pilot study, 102 serum samples from 7 endemic countries were tested by this magneto-immunoassay, revealing its ability to distinguish Chagas-positive from Chagas-negative cases more accurately and faster than a standard Tc24-based immunoassay.

Malaria is a vector-borne disease and is a major global public health threat caused by the genus Plasmodium. Of the five species that infected humans, Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum contribute the highest rates of morbidity and mortality. Research efforts to develop antimalarial drugs and effective vaccines is imperative to the prevention of future cases. Plasmodium has three reproductive stages: sporogonic, liver, and blood. Sporozoites are injected into the human host from an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which travel to the liver to initiate liver stage malaria. Since few sporozoites are successful, the liver stage is a bottleneck of the …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in high-risk populations. Although prophylactic options are available, there are no effective oral therapeutics for RSV infection. Obeldesivir (ODV) is an orally bioavailable prodrug of the nucleoside analog GS-441524, which is converted intracellularly to its active nucleoside triphosphate and inhibits the RSV RNA polymerase. Here we report the potent antiviral activity of ODV against geographically and temporally diverse RSV A and B clinical isolates (EC50: 0.20–0.66 μM). Resistance selection studies with ODV and GS-441524 against RSV identify a single amino acid substitution, I777L, in the L polymerase with …

Effects Of Seasonality On The Experiences Of Employees In Minor League Sports, Amanda Barefoot
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The temporal rhythms of sport organizations, driven by recurring cycles of in-season and off-season activity, create a unique organizational context that shapes decision-making, leadership behavior, and the experiences of employees. While seasonality is widely recognized in operational planning and revenue forecasting, its implications for organizational behavior in sport management remain underexplored. This three-paper dissertation examines seasonality as a temporal force influencing sport organizations at conceptual, strategic, and affective levels.
The first paper develops a sport-specific taxonomy of seasonality by synthesizing literature from econometrics, tourism, and organizational theory. It distinguishes between natural, internally institutionalized, and externally institutionalized seasonal influences, offering a …

However, limitations exist in translating findings from animal models to human physiology. Humanized mice provide a powerful bridge to understanding human physiology and mechanisms of disease pathogenesis while maintaining the feasibility of working with small animals. Methods for generating humanized mouse models that allow scientists to probe contributions of particular genes have been rudimentary. Here, we established an efficient method for generating genetically modified human cord blood-derived CD34

Following the American Revolution, membership in Baptist churches grew exponentially and the influence of the Baptist persuasion was significant. As one of the fastest growing Protestant denominations in early America, Baptists and their interests were often indicative of larger trends in religiosity. Incorporating kelp into American diets offers a promising avenue for enhancing nutrition and environmental sustainability. Despite its nutritional richness and ecological benefits as a "superfood" and carbon sink, cultural resistance presents a barrier to its widespread acceptance. This study delves into kelp's nutritional content and ecological advantages, exploring its potential to reshape dietary habits. Drawing insights from interviews and surveys, cultural norms emerge as a significant obstacle to kelp's integration into American cuisine. Strategies inspired by successful culinary adaptations, such as creole dishes, are proposed to navigate these challenges and shift societal perceptions.
