What's The Value Of A State? Accounting For The Ecosystem Services And Natural Capital Of Oregon, Kathryn Liebrecht
What's The Value Of A State? Accounting For The Ecosystem Services And Natural Capital Of Oregon, Kathryn Liebrecht
University Honors Theses
Ecosystem services are vital to human welfare and society, but often are overlooked when it comes to planning and setting policy. By neglecting to incorporate the benefits received from natural resources, policy makers may unknowingly be making decisions that harm the long term sustainability and use of these services. To highlight the importance of Oregon's ecosystems, the present study aims to provide a full accounting of the ecosystem services and natural capital of the state. Using data from the Institute for Natural Resources' updated Oregon statewide habitat map, Oregon's ecosystems were matched to biome categories from the Ecosystem Services Valuation …

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BVP) is an established treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and wide QRS. Left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) has emerged as a physiologic alternative by directly engaging the His-Purkinje system, potentially improving electrical resynchronization and clinical outcomes.
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the clinical outcomes between BVP and LBBAP in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤50% undergoing CRT.
Methods: This multicenter observational study included patients with LVEF ≤50% receiving CRT with either LBBAP or BVP at 18 centers from January 2018 to June …
An Exploration Of The Structure Of The Linear Algebraic Model Of Color, Isaac Martin
An Exploration Of The Structure Of The Linear Algebraic Model Of Color, Isaac Martin
University Honors Theses
This thesis surveys the mathematical grounding of linear algebraic models of color. It aims to build from the ground up the framework by which additive color is broadly understood in the digital age. Primarily building on the work of Jozef Cohen, Eric Dubois, David H. Krantz, and Günter Wyszecki, it aims to chart the construction of a model of color that underpins most modern understandings of color. While the construction is certainly established in colorimetric circles, the construction is, in the thesis author's opinion, either obtuse or non-rigorous. Ideally, this thesis serves to make the construction accessible to an audience …

Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is a common childhood cancer in Malawi, but few studies have exploredclinical characteristicsofrelapsed disease. We aimed to characterize clinical patterns of relapse to improve treatment and, ultimately, long-term survival in patients with pediatric KS.A retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients ages < 19 years of age at time of KS diagnosis in Lilongwe, Malawi between August 1, 2010 and March 15, 2020. Specifically, emphasis was placed on patients who had relapsed disease and excluded patients with refractory disease or those who died whilst receiving front-line treatment. Salvage therapy typically involved an intensified chemotherapy regimen compared to front-line therapy—namely nonliposomaldoxorubicin plus bleomycin/vincristine or paclitaxel monotherapy.One-hundred and ninety patients with pediatric KS were included in this analysis, 50 of whom experienced relapse (26%).Older median age was associated with occurrence of relapse (10 vs 6.7 years, p-value = 0.004). Median time from diagnosis to first relapse was 10.6 months (range 2.3–49 months). Three-year post-relapse overall survival (OS) for the entire cohort was 60% with a median follow-up time of 4.7 years after relapse.Survival was significantly higher for patients who relapsed with the woody edema clinical phenotype of pediatric KS versus those with visceral/disseminated disease—3-year OS 79% (95% CI 62–100) versus 29% (14–61).These data demonstrate potential for continued survival after KS relapse in the pediatric population and identify subsets of high-risk patients. The higher mortality observed in patients with visceral/disseminated KS highlights the need for improved therapeutic strategies.
Fold-And-Fuse Neurulation In Zebrafish Requires Vangl2, Jacalyn Macgowan, Mara Cardenas, Margot Kossmann Williams
Fold-And-Fuse Neurulation In Zebrafish Requires Vangl2, Jacalyn Macgowan, Mara Cardenas, Margot Kossmann Williams
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Shaping of the future brain and spinal cord during neurulation is an essential component of early vertebrate development. In amniote embryos, primary neurulation occurs through a "fold-and-fuse" mechanism by which the edges of the neural plate fuse into the hollow neural tube. Failure of neural fold fusion results in neural tube defects (NTDs), which are among the most devastating and common congenital anomalies worldwide. Unlike amniotes, the zebrafish neural tube develops largely via formation of a solid neural keel that later cavitates to form a midline lumen. Although many aspects of primary neurulation are conserved in zebrafish, including neural fold …
Comparison Of Psychological Data Between Populations, A Measurement Perspective, Ype H. Poortinga, Hester Van Herk, Johnny Fontaine
Comparison Of Psychological Data Between Populations, A Measurement Perspective, Ype H. Poortinga, Hester Van Herk, Johnny Fontaine
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In cross-cultural psychology there is a strong tradition of psychometric analysis of bias and invariance (equivalence) after collection of data in distinct populations with identical instruments developed in one population. This implies a focus on measurement outcomes and an operationalist orientation to science. Here we explore how a focus on joint development and content validity of instruments combined with relaxation of the demand of item identity can provide an additional perspective. Three points are addressed:(1) Any comparison between participants from two, or more, populations presumes a common quality (property, attribute) and requires a common measurement scale, a “standard of comparison”. …

A Note On Psoloessa Texana And Achurum Sumichrasti (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Acridinae) From Louisiana, Jovonn G. Hill
Midsouth Entomologist
During a 2024 survey in Kisatchie National Forest, Louisiana, Psoloessa texana and Achurum sumichrasti were collected, representing new state records. No prior records of P. texana exist for Louisiana, and while A. sumichrasti has been observed and reported online, no specimens were previously documented. These findings extend the known range of P. texana by ~320 km and suggest a broader distribution for A. sumichrasti. Their presence in xeric savannas may reflect Pleistocene-era disjunctions. With these additions, Louisiana’s documented grasshopper fauna increases to 41 species.

The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), has emerged as the major insect pest of cotton in the mid-southern United States following the eradication of the boll weevil and the introduction of genetically modified Bt cotton for caterpillar pests. The objective of this study is to evaluate tarnished plant bug resistance to the five most common insecticides used for control across six distinct growing regions. Glass-vial bioassays were used to evaluate resistance of field populations in a laboratory setting. Elevated levels of resistance of tarnished plant bug to bifenthrin and, to a lesser degree, imidacloprid have been reported …

BACKGROUND: Bioprosthetic surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) using the Trifecta valve was frequently chosen because of its large opening area and low transvalvular gradient. However, long-term follow-up revealed the potential for early structural valve deterioration. To further assess the long-term clinical outcomes and management considerations for patients implanted with the Trifecta valve, a real-world study using Medicare fee-for-service claims data was conducted with a focus on Trifecta valve reintervention.
METHODS: De-identified patients undergoing SAVR with the Trifecta™ valve (Abbott) in the U.S. between 1/1/2011-12/31/2021 were selected by ICD-9/10 procedure codes and then linked to a manufacturer device tracking database. All-cause …

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a twisting spinal deformity that occurs in otherwise healthy children at the time of rapid pre-pubescent growth. AIS affects ∼3% of children worldwide and is the most common musculoskeletal diagnosis in pediatric populations, posing a significant physiological, psychosocial and financial burden to patients. Genetic predisposition is a clear and major contributor to AIS, and insights from genomic discoveries are inspiring translational studies ultimately aimed at developing novel diagnostics and therapies. Pre-clinical animal models of AIS are now essential to validate human genetic findings, understand gene-by-environment interactions, and speed etiologic and therapeutic discovery. In this Perspective, …

The brain barrier system, including the choroid plexus, meninges and brain vasculature, regulates substrate transport and maintains differential protein concentrations between blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Aging and neurodegeneration disrupt brain barrier function, but proteomic studies of the effects on blood-CSF protein balance are limited. Here we used SomaScan proteomics to characterize paired CSF and plasma samples from 2,171 healthy or cognitively impaired older individuals from multiple cohorts, including the Global Neurodegeneration Proteomics Consortium. We identified proteins with correlated CSF and plasma levels that are produced primarily outside the brain and are enriched for structural domains that may enable their …

Human cortical development follows a hierarchical, sensorimotor-to-association sequence. The brain's capacity to enact this sequence indicates that it relies on unknown mechanisms to regulate regional differences in the timing of cortical maturation. Given evidence from animal systems that thalamic axons mechanistically regulate periods of cortical plasticity, here we evaluate in humans whether the development of structural connections between the thalamus and cortex aligns with cortical maturational heterochronicity. By deriving a new tractography atlas of human thalamic connections and applying it to diffusion data from three youth samples (8-23 years; total n = 2,676), we demonstrate that thalamocortical connectivity matures in …

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), exhibit distinct yet overlapping pathological mechanisms. Leveraging large-scale plasma proteomics data from the Global Neurodegeneration Proteomics Consortium, we analyzed 10,527 plasma samples (1,936 AD, 525 PD, 163 FTD, 1,638 dementia and 6,265 controls) to identify disease-specific and shared proteins across NDs. We identified 5,187 proteins significantly associated with AD, 3,748 with PD and 2,380 with FTD that revealed both common and divergent proteomic signatures, which were confirmed by multiple analytical approaches and orthogonal validation. PD and FTD showed the highest overlap (r

More than 57 million people globally suffer from neurodegenerative diseases, a figure expected to double every 20 years. Despite this growing burden, there are currently no cures, and treatment options remain limited due to disease heterogeneity, prolonged preclinical and prodromal phases, poor understanding of disease mechanisms, and diagnostic challenges. Identifying novel biomarkers is crucial for improving early detection, prognosis, staging and subtyping of these conditions. High-dimensional molecular studies in biofluids ('omics') offer promise for scalable biomarker discovery, but challenges in assembling large, diverse datasets hinder progress. To address this, the Global Neurodegeneration Proteomics Consortium (GNPC)-a public-private partnership-established one of the …

Bifidobacteria are beneficial saccharolytic microbes that are widely used as probiotics or in synbiotic formulations, yet individual responses to supplementation can vary with strain type, microbiota composition, diet and lifestyle, underscoring the need for strain-level insights into glycan metabolism. Here we reconstructed 68 pathways for the utilization of mono-, di-, oligo- and polysaccharides by analysing the distribution of 589 curated metabolic gene functions (catabolic enzymes, transporters and transcriptional regulators) across 3,083 non-redundant Bifidobacterium genomes of human origin. Thirty-eight predicted phenotypes were validated in vitro for 30 geographically diverse strains, supporting genomics-based predictions. Our analysis uncovered extensive inter- and intraspecies functional …

Retinal cell fate specification from multipotent retinal progenitors is governed by dynamic changes in chromatin structure and gene expression. Methylation at cytosines in DNA (5mC) is actively regulated for proper control of gene expression and chromatin architecture. Numerous genes display active DNA demethylation across retinal development; a process that requires oxidation of 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and is controlled by the ten-eleven translocation (TET) methylcytosine dioxygenase enzymes. Using an allelic series of conditional TET enzyme mutants in mice, we determine that DNA demethylation is required upstream of NRL and NR2E3 expression for the establishment of rod-photoreceptor fate. Using histological, behavioral, …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Valosin Containing Protein-associated multisystem proteinopathy (VCP-MSP) is a progressive, autosomal dominant disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the VCP gene, resulting in a heterogeneous clinical presentation. Muscle biopsy findings are characteristic but not pathognomonic. This study aimed to comprehensively analyse VCP-related myopathology and explore correlations with clinical phenotypes, genetic variants, and disease progression.
METHODS: Muscle biopsy images and data were collected retrospectively from adults (≥18 years) with pathogenic or likely pathogenic VCP variants enrolled in the VCP Multicentre International Study. Biopsy data were standardized using the "Common Data Elements for Muscle Biopsy Reporting." Variations in biopsy findings …

The Brugia Test Plus (BT+) is a new rapid diagnostic test for Brugia species which detects human IgG4 antibodies specific for the immunogenic Brugia protein BmR1. The aim of this study was to evaluate the BT+ assay with several types of sample-matrices: whole blood, plasma, and dried blood spots (DBS) from individuals living in Belitung Timur, a Brugia malayi endemic area in Indonesia. Night blood was collected from residents living in four presumed endemic villages, while DBS were collected from schoolchildren living in those four villages. The sensitivity of BT+ was measured by comparing the BT+ results to microscopic examination …

With age, clonal expansions occur pervasively across normal tissues yet only in rare instances lead to cancer, despite being driven by well-established cancer drivers. Characterization of the factors that influence clonal progression is needed to inform interventional approaches. Germline genetic variation influences cancer risk and shapes tumor mutational profile, but its influence on the mutational landscape of normal tissues is not well known. Here we studied the impact of germline genetic variation on clonal hematopoiesis (CH) in 731,835 individuals. We identified 22 new CH-predisposition genes, most of which predispose to CH driven by specific mutational events. CH-predisposition genes contribute to …

BACKGROUND: Predicting mortality risk in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is challenging due to complex, variable clinical and physiological data. Machine learning (ML) offers potential for more accurate risk stratification.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of various ML models in predicting NICU mortality using a team-based modeling competition.
METHODS: We conducted a modeling competition with five neonatologist-led teams applying ML techniques-logistic regression, CatBoost, neural networks, random forest, and XGBoost-to a shared dataset from over 6,000 NICU admissions. The dataset included static demographic and clinical variables, alongside daily samples of heart rate and oxygen saturation. Each team developed models to predict …
