General Surgery Resident Research
Background/Objectives: The incidence of dysrhythmia after blunt thoracic trauma varies in the literature from 8-75%, and the complication rate from these dysrhythmias is not well studied. The aims of this study are to (1) identify the incidence of dysrhythmia following blunt thoracic trauma, (2) identify risk factors associated with developing a dysrhythmia, and (3) identify the incidence of cardiac intervention after developing a dysrhythmia. We hypothesize that blunt thoracic trauma may result in post-injury dysrhythmias. Methods: This is a retrospective review of trauma patients ≥ 18 years with a blunt mechanism of injury at a Level 1 Trauma …

Air pollution is a significant public health issue that impacts lung health, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Both natural and anthropogenic sources of air pollution give rise to a variety of toxic compounds, including particulate matter (PM), ozone (O₃), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to these pollutants is strongly associated with the development and exacerbation of respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Notably, early life exposure to pollutants such as …

Ai-Enabled Autonomous Weapons And Human Control: Part I: Human Control And Machine Learning Design And Development, Lena Trabucco
International Law Studies
At the center of the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapon systems (AWS) is the challenge of human control. AI has the potential to reshape the boundaries of military capabilities. In particular, the increasing sophistication of AWS necessitates a deep examination of the balance between machine autonomy and the role and requirements of human decision-makers. In pursuit of this balance, the concept of meaningful human control emerged. It is a concept born of necessity and offers a platform to reexamine and redefine the scope of human involvement in critical and time-sensitive decision-making. MHC has become a defining feature …

The Development Of The Assessment Of Self-Care (Asc), Ashley R. Righetti
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Self-care is a topic that has piqued the interest of researchers in recent years with much of the focus being on specific subsets of the population such as helping professions and those with chronic conditions. This trend has been consistent when it comes to the development of measures intended to evaluate people’s self-care practices. Designed with Butler and colleagues’ (2019) self-care model in mind, the Assessment of Self-Care (ASC) was developed to broadly assess self-care practices in the general U.S. adult population. This study discusses the development and initial validation of the ASC. After the item generation phase, exploratory factor …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Health care leaders are challenged with ongoing nursing shortages. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the impact of communication and job satisfaction on registered nurses’ turnover intentions. The conceptual framework integrated Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg and Mausner’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory, and Social Exchange Theory. Two research questions guided the study: the relationship between communication variables and intent to leave a healthcare organization, and the relationship between job satisfaction and intent to leave. A randomized sample of 156 registered nurses in California, aged 23 to 65 and identified through the California Nurses Database, was recruited via SurveyMonkey. …
What Are The Lived Experiences Of Policing Professionals With Self-Reported Alterations To Biological Instinct Alongside Operational Demands?, Madyson Wier
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Operational demands and training of policing professionals may be a source of conflict leading to a potential increase in risk for both the officer and the general public. Training in a law enforcement academy does not adequately prepare officers for the impacts the career may have on mental health, changes to the biological system, or societal criticism of modern-day policing. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how policing professionals experience changes in the autonomic nervous system with exposure to trauma in the field, and how self-reported alterations are further impacted due to operational expectations of their department. …

The growing integration of chatbots in e-commerce customer service presents opportunities and challenges for online retailers in shaping effective artificial intelligence (AI) strategies. This study evaluates human-only, AI-only, and human–AI collaboration strategies using an agent-based simulation model across varying levels of task complexity, service volume, and product margin. Results show that the AI-only strategy excels in low-volume, simple tasks due to its cost-effectiveness, while the human–AI collaboration strategy proves superior in managing high-volume or complex inquiries by scaling human involvement to meet demand. For high-margin products, this collaborative approach delivers the best service, whereas the AI-only strategy is optimal for …
