This article critically examines Abdessalam Yassine’s thought regarding Western modernity. Abdessalam Yassine develops a radical critique of Western modernity, which he associates with secularism, materialism, and the exclusion of spirituality. Rooted in Islamic tradition, his thought opposes “believing reason” to “autonomous reason” and seeks to restore the primacy of Revelation as the foundation of all reform. However, his critique essentializes the West as a homogeneous and destructive entity, reducing Western experiences to their imperialist dimension without distinguishing between universal values and strategies of domination. Despite the coherence of his traditional spiritual vision, his project for an Islamic alternative remains abstract …

Entre Religion Et Médias : Méfiance Et Alliance, Betsa Estephano
Horizons et Conjonctures
In a context of continuous information flow, the relationship between religions and the media appears both conflictual and complementary. The media play a decisive role in shaping public perceptions of religions and in determining their visibility, while religious traditions, aware of this influence, seek to use these channels to communicate their message and engage in dialogue with society. This interaction raises crucial issues such as freedom of expression, respect for religious pluralism, and the ethical responsibility of media professionals. The article examines how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam maintain diverse and sometimes ambivalent relations with the media, marked by fear of …

Harmonie Sacrée : De La Famille Maronite Et De La Foi Dans La Tradition Maronite, Joseph Salim Al-Khoury
Horizons et Conjonctures
The study of Syriac liturgy and the families of Lebanese saints highlights the profound spiritual influence of the Maronite Church on family life, calling for a renewed pastoral vision aimed at building “parishes of sacred families.” It shows how the close bond between the Maronite Church and village families, shaped by the ascetic spirituality of hermits, fostered a domestic life grounded in prayer, fasting, sacrifice, Scripture reading, and Christian virtues. This heritage, rooted in the early Christians of Antioch, enabled the sustained transmission of Christian values through an asceticism shared by both clergy and laity. The flourishing of saintly vocations …

Evaluating The Use Of Statewide Summative Assessments In College Admissions: Insights From A Case Study, Yen Vo, Stephen Dunbar, Catherine Welch, Jeongmin Ji, Xiaoting Zhong
Journal of College Access
The impact of COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing discussions around social inequality have significantly reshaped traditional college admission practices. This study explores the potential of using statewide assessments that are accessible to all students and aligned with curriculum standards as an alternative to college admission tests. Hierarchical linear modeling further revealed that statewide assessment scores contributed an additional 9% of the variance in admission scores above and beyond high school GPA and core coursework. Logistic regression and random forest analyses indicated that high school GPA and statewide assessment scores were the most contributing factors to admissions decisions, followed by core coursework. …

School of Art, Design and Architecture
Material passports (MPs) are datasets designed to track and manage building elements’ lifecycles, including the documentation of provenance, location, or disassembly information. The last few years have seen a growth in MPs development, catalysed by international, national, and regional directives on decarbonisation, data transparency, product labelling, and the need to rethink the reporting of sustainability metrics in the built environment. Recent MP prototypes, however, encompass multiple data architectures and have been implemented across various building typologies, regulatory jurisdictions, and construction processes, resulting in unclear adoption pathways in industry. In response to this challenge, this paper maps this emerging field using …

Background: Complex socio-cultural, psychological, geographical, and service-related challenges are faced when recruiting people with dementia for clinical trials. The aim of Phase 1 of the Dementia PersonAlised Care Team (D-PACT) project was to assess the feasibility of recruiting (identifying, approaching and consenting) people with dementia, including those without capacity to consent, to a cluster randomized controlled trial of a primary care-based personalized dementia support intervention in England. COVID-19 necessitated a shift to remote working, creating the opportunity to compare recruitment strategies before and under lockdown constraints. This paper shares the adaptations made to enable remote consent and capacity judgement with …

Final Offer Arbitration With Asymmetric Evidence, Yongjoon Kim, Afia Promi, Jiatong Xue, Cary Deck
ESI Working Papers
As disputants increasingly rely upon arbitration it is critical to understand outcomes that are likely to arise from mechanisms like final offer arbitration. While a sizable experimental literature investigating strategic behavior in final offer arbitration exists, that work has overwhelmingly focused on situations where the arbitrator’s beliefs about the appropriate resolution are symmetric and uninfluenced by the disputants’ cases. This paper considers a setting where the arbitrator’s beliefs depend on the strength of each disputant’s case. We find disputant responses to changes in the relative strength of their case generally follow comparative statics predictions. Further, we find that final offers …

INTRODUCTION: Fenestration of the lateral semicircular canal has been proposed to improve intracochlear gene therapy delivery, but the relationship between the membranous and bony labyrinths at the canal apex has not been systematically defined.
METHODS: We examined 62 human temporal bones, including 31 unaffected specimens and 31 with chronic otitis media, using histologic review to assess the membranous-to-bony relationship at the apex.
RESULTS: In all specimens, the membranous labyrinth directly contacted the outer circumferential bony wall.
CONCLUSION: This consistent finding, independent of disease state, indicates that fenestration at the lateral canal apex carries a high risk of membranous injury. Potential …

Adaptive And Inclusive Seating Design For Transit-Oriented Interior, Muhammad Daffa Brisbhanuharto, Novrizal Primayudha
ARSNET
As transit-oriented interiors increasingly evolve into complex commercial and social micro-environments and serve diverse user groups, seating design must respond beyond basic functionality to address the need for adaptation and inclusivity. This study explores adaptive and inclusive design strategies through the development of seating design in such a context. This research follows Liedtka's human-centred, iterative design process comprising stages such as empathy, definition, ideation, and prototyping in developing seating design for a transit-oriented interior at Canabeans Coffee, located within KCIC Halim High-Speed Rail Station, Jakarta.
The design integrates ergonomic, aesthetic, and accessibility considerations while responding to contextual challenges of a …

The Impact Of Changes In Real Income And The Real Effective Exchange Rate On Trade In Goods And Services, Ioannis Litsios, Tjeerd Boonman, Keith Pilbeam
Plymouth Business School
We use foreign trade data on both imports and exports of goods and services among a group of 15 advanced economies to determine the incomes and price elasticities of demand for exports and imports of goods, services and goods and services combined in the long run. We find that changes in foreign and domestic income have, as expected, a positive long-run impact on the demand for exports and imports, respectively, with the impact of income changes being typically greater on the demand for services than on the demand for goods. We also confirm that a depreciation in the real effective …

Disrupting Latina/X Media Representations: A Performance Art Installation Informed By Autoethnographic And Embodied Explorations, Sandra Cristina Roa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation I use autoethnography and performance methods to create a performance art installation that examines and re-imagines the role of media representations in shaping how I as a Latina actively negotiates belonging and identifies this concept as always in a processes requiring negotiation. I argue belonging is influenced by how I see myself or don’t see myself in media representation and offer the counter-narrative as a way of asserting agency and disrupting marginalization. In this project, I tend to the tensions felt between being a community member, media maker, and qualitative researcher in order to disrupt media messages. …

Unexpected infant deaths often present complex diagnostic challenges, where clinical histories alone may not reveal the underlying etiology. Autopsy examination remains essential in identifying uncommon neuropathologic findings that contribute to mortality.
A two-month-old male infant was found unresponsive in his car seat (day 0) and succumbed four days later despite intensive medical intervention. His medical history included neonatal respiratory distress with two prior admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit. Autopsy was conducted one day after death (approximately five days postictus), revealing ectopic lymphoid tissue within the medulla of the brainstem, accompanied by subacute infarction and early necrosis. Additional systemic …

The nutritional benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOOs) depend on their chemical composition. Currently, there is no simple way to compare the health benefits of different EVOOs based on their fat profiles. Samples from Australia and four Mediterranean countries (N = 423) were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to screen for six quality parameters (free acidity, peroxides, K270, K232, Delta K, wax) and to measure fat compositions. These fat compositions were compared against healthy eating guidelines to produce five binary descriptors, which were weighted by evidence to create an accessible Fatty Acid based Nutrition Index (FNI). EVOOs …

Digital Media And Political Engagement: Shaping Youth Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors In Four European Societies, Tyler Hansen, Chloe K. Taylor, Ryan T. Knowles
Psychology Student Research
This study investigates the relationship between students’ political engagement, civic knowledge, socioeconomic status, gender, and digital media use and their pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors in Denmark, Sweden, Spain, and Romania. To do this, we use data from the International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS:22) and employ hierarchical level modeling. We found that students with higher civic knowledge and greater confidence in their ability to be active citizens were more likely to report both pro-environmental behaviors and positive attitudes in every country studied. Socioeconomic status also showed positive links with environmental engagement. Digital media use was linked to more pro-environmental behaviors …

The Regulation Of The Hippo Signalling Pathway Effector Yap Through A Novel Lipid-Dependent Extracellular Matrix Complex, Simge Karagil, Natalia Haddad, Michael Stolinski, Natasha Hill, Darren Johnson, Nadine Wehida, Ahmed Elbediwy
School of Biomedical Sciences
Lipid metabolism plays a significant role in the regulation of various critical pathways within cells, where enhanced lipid metabolism is a hallmark of cancer cell metabolism. The Hippo signalling pathway poses as an important signalling pathway that governs tissue growth control and tumorigenesis. The effector of the Hippo signalling pathway, Yes-associated protein (YAP), serves as a central regulator for this growth control. Once a tissue develops to its correct size, YAP is phosphorylated and inactivated within the cytoplasm by the activation of the Hippo pathway, where its inactivation results in YAP nucleus translocation. This allows its dephosphorylation, modulating various cellular …

Arthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint is a prevalent and often disabling condition for many older adults. The diagnosis is typically established through a comprehensive patient history, physical examination, and confirmatory radiographs. Nonsurgical management with splinting and anti-inflammatory medication has demonstrated effectiveness. Several surgical options have proven effectiveness for those who fail nonsurgical management. Surgical options include silicone implantation, resection arthroplasty, tendon interposition, ligament reconstruction, denervation, and joint implant arthroplasty.
