A Coupled Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Promoting And Suppressing Interactions Among Cancer Hallmarks In Endometrial Cancer, Jeddy Bennett
A Coupled Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Promoting And Suppressing Interactions Among Cancer Hallmarks In Endometrial Cancer, Jeddy Bennett
Theses and Dissertations
Spatial transcriptomics enables the scoring of Cancer Hallmarks at a high resolution across a tissue biopsy, yet current analyses of these data remain largely descriptive, treating each spot as a static, independent observation. This thesis develops a coupled system of advection-diffusion-reaction partial differential equations to model the hallmark landscape as the steady-state solution of an underlying spatial process, and casts the recovery of its physical parameters as a PDE-constrained inverse problem. The framework is implemented in FEniCSx on tissue-specific finite element meshes derived from two endometrial cancer biopsies provided by the Huntsman Cancer Institute, with subdomains, boundary interfaces, and an …

Comparison Of Postoperative Clinical Outcomes Following Human Breast Milk Versus Formula Feeding In Infants Undergoing Congenital Heart Surgery, Caden Anderjaska, Monalisha Elango, Sarah O'Neil, Jeffrey D. Salomon
Posters: 2026 Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Infants with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass often develop intestinal barrier dysfunction, microbial dysbiosis, and systemic inflammation that may impair postoperative recovery. This retrospective cohort study compared postoperative outcomes between infants receiving human breast milk (n = 15) and formula (n = 15) after congenital heart surgery. Clinical, microbiome, inflammatory, and gut barrier data were analyzed. Infants fed human breast milk demonstrated greater bacterial diversity, reduced gut barrier dysfunction and inflammation, shorter intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay, and lower vasoactive-inotropic scores compared with formula-fed infants. These findings suggest that human breast milk may improve postoperative recovery …
Chitinase Variants Establish Environmental Inflammatory Lung Conditioning, Yilin Wang
Chitinase Variants Establish Environmental Inflammatory Lung Conditioning, Yilin Wang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Environmental particulate exposure contributes to the severity and persistence of numerous acute and chronic lung diseases, including asthma, viral pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and pulmonary fibrosis. Chitin, a highly abundant environmental polysaccharide present in fungi, insects, and mites, is continuously encountered at mucosal barrier surfaces and functions as an immunostimulatory particulate substrate within the respiratory tract. Acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase; CHIA) is an evolutionarily conserved mammalian enzyme that degrades chitin-containing particles and regulates inflammatory responses at barrier tissues. Common human CHIA polymorphisms reduce AMCase enzymatic activity and are associated with asthma susceptibility; however, the physiologic consequences of these variants …

Center for Social Development Research
Data for Social Impact (DSI), an initiative of the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis, has played a key role in cultivating community data capacity in the St. Louis region—particularly at the organizational and collective levels. DSI has done this by building capacity among social sector organizations to work collaboratively with data across government, philanthropy, nonprofits, and impacted communities. This playbook outlines DSI’s approach to building community data capacity in St. Louis and lessons learned along the way.
Immigration Status And Lung Cancer Diagnosis In U.S. First-Generation Immigrants, Valeriya Lockwood
Immigration Status And Lung Cancer Diagnosis In U.S. First-Generation Immigrants, Valeriya Lockwood
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The healthy immigrant effect (HIE) is an observed phenomenon in which immigrants exhibit better health outcomes than native-born residents, though relatively few studies have examined its role in chronic diseases in the United States. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to assess the associations between immigration status, age, sex, race/ethnicity, median household income, and geographic location and lung cancer diagnosis in first-generation immigrant adults aged 18 or older. The subsequent health trajectory model provided the theoretical framework for the study. Data were obtained from the SEER*Stat Database 1975-2022 (N = 1,993). Binomial regression analysis showed that immigrants were …

Predictors Of Adverse Events After Emergency Transfers In Long-Term Care: A Secondary Analysis, Yu-Chi Chen, Yi-Ru Liao
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Long-term care residents worldwide frequently require emergency medical care due to multimorbidity, frailty, and functional impairment. After returning to long-term care facilities, many experience rapid health changes, leading to preventable adverse events, reduced care quality, and safety concerns. Identifying predictors of such events is essential to inform risk stratification and proactive nursing surveillance in long-term care settings. This study aimed to examine predictors of adverse events after emergency transfers, using Taiwan as a population-level case context.
A secondary data analysis was conducted using medical records from 19 long-term care facilities in northern Taiwan between October 2022 and September 2023. A …

Gloves On Or Off? A Critical Ethnographic Study Exploring Non-Sterile Glove Use In Hospital Settings, Navisha Weerasinghe, Fiona A. Miller, Lisa Cranley, Quinn Grundy
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic sparked a surge in the production and use of plastic single-use medical products, particularly single-use gowns, masks, and gloves. The proliferation of single-use medical products in care work highlights significant tensions between safety, cost, infection prevention and control (IPAC), and environmental concerns. Nurses are critical stakeholders in driving environmental sustainability within health systems as they are uniquely positioned at the intersection of patient care, supply utilization, IPAC, and waste generation. In recent years, ‘gloves-off’ campaigns have been introduced at some hospitals globally and in Ontario to attend to the environmental harms associated with unnecessary glove use. …

The Consequences Of Using Human Behavior To Train Ai, Lauren Treiman
The Consequences Of Using Human Behavior To Train Ai, Lauren Treiman
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Artificial intelligence (AI) is now an integral part of everyday decision making. These systems not only help us make choices but also learn from our behavior. Therefore, it is important to understand how our interactions with AI influence these systems. Current approaches often assume that the behavior used to train AI accurately reflects how people would naturally behave. However, people are often informed that their choices will be used for AI training, and as a result, may change how they would normally act. In this dissertation, we combine psychological and computer science perspectives to investigate the consequences of this awareness. …

Large language models (LLMs) create contexts in which individual differences may shape reliance on digital systems. Drawing on neurodiversity, this study examined whether perceived trustworthiness of user’s primary LLM mediates associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits and LMM dependencyinstrumental and relationship LLM dependency. Adults in the UK (n = 567) and China (n = 577) reported ADHD traits, perceived LLM trustworthiness of LLM, and both types of dependency. Across samples, higher ADHD traits were associated with lower trustworthiness, whereas greater trustworthiness was associated with greater instrumental and relationship dependency, yielding negative indirect effects. In the UK, direct ADHD-dependency associations were …
