Enrolled Deeds As Records And Archives In Jamaica, Andrew Williams
Enrolled Deeds As Records And Archives In Jamaica, Andrew Williams
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This paper examines the history of the enrolled deeds record series in Jamaica, from its creation in the mid-seventeenth century through to the present day. It is a critical examination of a single record series through colonialism and independence. It examines the purpose of deeds and the context in which deeds registries were created before examining the history of the series through the periods of slavery and emancipation. It examines in close detail the late nineteenth century, when the Island Record Office—which has custody of the enrolled deeds—was created and several other important changes happened. It situates the enrolled deeds …

Enhancing Archives And Records Management In Low-Resourced Organizations Through Experiential Learning, Jinfang Niu
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Master’s students in Archives and Records Management could help low-resourced organizations address their Archives and Records Management needs while gaining practical experience. Archives and Records Management education programs could facilitate this mutually beneficial relationship by offering internships and service-learning courses. This paper analyzes the strengths and limitations of these two experiential learning mechanisms and discusses solutions to overcome the limitations. It argues that service-learning is especially suitable for addressing the Archives and Records Management needs of low-resourced organizations and proposes a service-learning model for that purpose.

Archival Notations Of The Norwegian Charter Material, Juliane Tiemann
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This paper explores archival notations, primarily from the early modern and modern periods, found on the dorse of Norwegian charters dating from the 13th to the 17th century. By examining the notation practices of two prominent Norwegian archivists and collectors, the study further highlights individual efforts in documenting and preserving these materials across various collections. The archival efforts are contextualized historically, noting a transition to systematic archival management. The findings reveal the significance of this largely unexplored component of Norwegian charters as additional historical sources, emphasizing the role of dorsal annotations in provenance research. The textual and visual analysis of …

Restricted Word Order In Languages Without Overt Case Marking: Evidence From Modern Dialects Of Arabic, Mustafa Ahmed Al-Humari
Restricted Word Order In Languages Without Overt Case Marking: Evidence From Modern Dialects Of Arabic, Mustafa Ahmed Al-Humari
UB Journal for Humanities
The study examines the morphosyntactic strategies used in Arabic language to indicate grammatical functions (subject, object) within a sentence, comparing and contrasting modern dialects of Arabic, particularly Saudi Arabic, and Yemeni Arabic, with Standard Arabic. The empirical observation of the study is that, while Standard Arabic mainly relies on a case marking strategy to determine grammatical functions, the modern dialects of Arabic under investigation are incapable of employing this strategy. This incapability raises questions about how grammatical functions are indicated in the absence of overt case morphology in the mentioned dialects. The paper argues that the absence of overt case …

The Syntax Of Verbless Sentences In Bisha Najdi Arabic, Aeshah Muqbil Saeed Almineeai
The Syntax Of Verbless Sentences In Bisha Najdi Arabic, Aeshah Muqbil Saeed Almineeai
UB Journal for Humanities
This study investigates the syntactic structure of verbless sentences in Bisha Najdi Arabic (henceforth BNA). It explores the different types of BNA verbless constructions, i.e., verbless constructions with nominal predicate, adjectival predicates and adverbial predicate. It argues for the nonverbal predicate analysis, as proposed by Benmamoun (2000, 2008), and extends the analysis to BNA verbless constructions within Chomsky's (1995) Minimalist Framework. In addition, the study argues that hnaak in similar constructions is a verb-like element, and accordingly, a syntactic analysis is provided for both BNA affirmative and negative hnaak-constructions. By investigating the syntactic structure of BNA verbless sentences, the study …

Problems Of Faithfulness In The English Translation Of Tayeb Salih’S Masterpiece Season Of Migration To The North: Revisiting Equivalence Theory, Ali Albashir Mohammed Alhaj
UB Journal for Humanities
Translation is a bi-lingual communication activity that should convey the information similar to the original. Consequently, the translator's target is to be faithful to the original wording and maintain the essence of the source language (SL) when he/she conveys a text in the target language (TL). This study was conducted to cast a new light on the cultural problems encountered by Denys Johnson-Davis in his English translation of Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, specifically in terms of his faithfulness to the ST, and how these can be addressed from various theoretical and practical standpoints about the equivalence …

Trompe L’oeil is a term in Art History often associated with creating a painting so realistic that it tricks the viewer into believing it is real. Producing a Trompe L’oeil required extensive training in art academies, and historically, ownership of such works was limited to wealthy or upper-class individuals, as the craft was highly valued and expensive. This notion is present in today’s art world and raises questions about who can access and own art, and whether fine art is accessible to the public.
This context informs my demonstration, which explores new technologies in painting and sculpture that enable material-based …

A Cord Of Three Strands Is Not Quickly Broken, Laura L. Hennings
A Cord Of Three Strands Is Not Quickly Broken, Laura L. Hennings
Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day
Throughout the twentieth century, women's activism in Arkansas existed on a spectrum. From sweeping, state-wide movements to incremental shifts in local policy, many women united across racial lines and socioeconomic differences to bring about positive change for all Arkansans. Thousands of unnamed rural women worked directly and indirectly with public figures such as Adolphine Fletcher Terry and Daisy Bates to improve access to healthcare, education, and a better quality of life. For these women in Arkansas, I argue that the intersectional nature of their activism is precisely the reason for their greater successes.
Ecology Of Subaerial Algae: Photosynthetic Capacity As A Function Of Relative Humidity In A Naturally- Occurring Association, James A. Nienow
Ecology Of Subaerial Algae: Photosynthetic Capacity As A Function Of Relative Humidity In A Naturally- Occurring Association, James A. Nienow
Georgia Journal of Science
Subaerial algae are defined by their ability to grow on surfaces exposed directly to the air. We are currently investigating the nature of the adaptations that allow these unicellular microorganisms to form rich growths in an environment subjected to repeated and prolonged periods without liquid water. It is well known from laboratory studies that at least some members of the group are able to sustain metabolic activity using water vapor at high relative humidity. However, data concerning the significance of this ability in natural populations are almost completely lacking. To help fill in this gap, we tracked the photosynthetic capacity …

Economic Loss Rule - Commercial Painting Co. V. Weitz Co.: Tennessee's Abrogation Of The Economic Loss Doctrine As Applied To Service Contracts, Merry Ashlyn Gatewood
University of Memphis Law Review
In its broadest form, the “economic loss rule” stands for the proposition that contracting parties who suffer purely economic damages may not recover in tort.1 The doctrine reasons that, in cases where there are no personal injuries or property damage, contract law— and not the law of tort—provides the appropriate avenue for recovery. This rule originated in the context of products liability,3 and it exists to preserve the boundary line between contract and tort law when both theories could ostensibly apply.4 However, “the economic loss rule” is a bit of a misnomer because there is not one unified rule.5 Instead, …

In the early morning hours of Friday, September 2, 2022, a young woman named Eliza Fletcher was jogging down Central Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee when a man violently abducted her.2 Shortly after the abduction, the Memphis Police Department issued a city-wide watch for Mrs. Fletcher, volunteers searched wooded areas around town, and news outlets broadcasted the few known details of her abduction.3 Mrs. Fletcher disappeared near the University of Memphis Campus just a few hundred feet from a local private school, providing police with a cache of surveillance footage that helped them quickly pinpoint a suspect.4 On September 3, just …

Beyond Compliance: Unmasking The Gaps In Aba Standard 303© For Cultural Competency, Assata Smith
University of Memphis Law Review
In the early weeks of the Fall 2023 semester at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law (“Memphis Law”), a few student leaders of the school’s Law Review worked together to construct a “trophy” to acknowledge the excellent Bluebook editing work done by Law Review staff each week. The “trophy” was made up of a football, a long black wig, big red lips, and was named “Sheila.” The trophy then sat on display for nearly two weeks in the Law Review suite until a few concerned Law Review members brought to the attention of leadership the resemblance …
Sexual Orientation, Rank, And Status, Duane Rudolph
Sexual Orientation, Rank, And Status, Duane Rudolph
University of Memphis Law Review
Dignity retains its ancient focus on rank and status. This Article, therefore, rejects the idea that we now live in the age of equal dignity, meaning equal rank and status for everyone. Rank underscores numbering, placement, and position in a predetermined hierarchy, and status underscores the power and privileges associated with each rank. Rank permits human beings to identify their preassigned location in the hierarchy, and status justifies assertions of rank since status governs the ancestral privileges, powers, and responsibilities attached to each rank. The Article relies on two constitutional cases, one before “dignity” and the other after. In 1986, …
