Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway Jan 2026

Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers

Recent studies have examined how students form productive conceptions of the definite integral and discussed techniques for promoting such conceptions. In this paper I present findings from interviews held with six students enrolled in second-semester calculus, four of whom had received quantitatively focused instruction on the definite integral. All six were chosen for their observed use of summation conceptions on definite integral problems, and here their conceptions are explored further. Additionally, we gain insight on their thinking regarding limits as related to the definite integral. The findings presented here add to our understanding of student thinking regarding the integral and …

Building Ai Literacy To Redesign Graduate Public Health Courses: A Case Study Of Pubh 520, Darren Liu Jan 2026

Building Ai Literacy To Redesign Graduate Public Health Courses: A Case Study Of Pubh 520, Darren Liu

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in public health practice, graduate education must move beyond ad hoc responses to AI toward intentional, ethically grounded instructional design. This conference paper presents a case study of the redesign of PUBH 520, a graduate-level public health course, to explicitly integrate AI literacy within course outcomes, assessments, and learning activities. Guided by higher-education AI literacy frameworks, the redesign foregrounded faculty AI literacy as a prerequisite for responsible AI integration, emphasizing ethical reasoning, technical understanding, pedagogical alignment, and reflective assessment practices. Findings suggest that the redesigned course improved coherence among learning outcomes, assessment integrity, …

Inclusive Teaching Strategies That Increase Student Engagement, Manar Yamany, Jeffrey Carver Jan 2026

Inclusive Teaching Strategies That Increase Student Engagement, Manar Yamany, Jeffrey Carver

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers

This teaching practice introduces participation pathways intentional structures that design how students engage during class. A participation pathway is a planned sequence that moves students from individual thinking to small-group interaction, to shared application. Rather than relying on voluntary participation, this approach embeds engagement directly into the structure of the lesson.

This practice emerged through observing a range of college classrooms and participating in courses where structured engagement increased attention, listening, and meaningful participation. In these settings, instructors organized class sessions so that all students engaged through writing, discussion, and application activities. These pathways ensured that students who were present …

Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen Jan 2026

Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen

Theses and Dissertations--History

This dissertation investigates mercy in the Carolingian period, especially its political dimensions. A sustained, holistic examination of mercy in the early medieval period remains lacking. This study examines mercy not only as a history of an idea but also as a history of emotion, tracing its transformation from the ancient Greek and Roman worlds through patristic literature and into Carolingian political discourse. This study argues that mercy played a central role in the construction of Christian kingship within Carolingian political discourse. Early Church Fathers reinterpreted mercy from a controversial concept in Roman Stoic philosophy into a positive virtue in Christian …

Research In Progress: Using Pdsa Cycles To Support Faculty Teaching Development, Aida Elisabet Jimenez Esquilin Jan 2026

Research In Progress: Using Pdsa Cycles To Support Faculty Teaching Development, Aida Elisabet Jimenez Esquilin

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

Primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) are rich environments for faculty-driven instructional innovation where instructors routinely engage in informal, embedded formative assessment as part of everyday teaching practice. In these settings, faculty may notice recurring themes in student explanations, misconceptions, and questions as instruction unfolds and make in-the-moment instructional adjustments. Faculty also frequently implement active learning strategies; however, the evidence generated through these practices is not always systematically captured, analyzed, or documented to inform subsequent instructional decisions. This project builds on these existing practices by applying an improvement science framework using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles-to support faculty by providing a structured approach to …

Choose Your Own Adventure: A Different Course Structure, Jacquelyn Kate Seymour Jan 2026

Choose Your Own Adventure: A Different Course Structure, Jacquelyn Kate Seymour

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

As commonly accepted in upper-level courses, course work should appeal to higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy such as analyze, evaluate, and create (Halupa, 2021). However, course design choices can limit a student’s potential in reaching these higher levels of learning when a preselected number of topics and assignment types are provided by the instructor (Halupa, 2021). Additionally, not all students will thrive with instructor selected assignment design. Instead, instructors can offer a “choose your own adventure” approach to course designs (Sutherland, 2023; Yetter, 2022). Specifically, this has taken the form of allowing students to choose their own assignments within my …

For the Fall 2025 semester, we designed a multi-week lab module to implement a cost-effective, scalable version of the PARE model suitable for a course serving approximately 900 students annually.

The three-week sequence integrates core scientific practices, including hypothesis generation, field sampling, DNA extraction, PCR amplification of antibiotic resistance genes, gel electrophoresis, …

Federalist Foundations: A Critique Of The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, Joseph A. D'Angelo Jan 2026

Federalist Foundations: A Critique Of The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, Joseph A. D'Angelo

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) challenges the constitutional and federalist principles embedded in the Electoral College system. By attempting to bypass the traditional amendment process, the NPVIC risks destabilizing the carefully calibrated balance between state and national sovereignty that has guided presidential elections for centuries. Rooted in federalism, the Electoral College was designed to ensure equitable representation among states, giving smaller and less populous states a meaningful voice in the electoral process.

This Article critiques the NPVIC through a comprehensive examination of its constitutional, practical, and federalist implications. It analyzes the constitutional hurdles posed by the Electors Appointment …

Coming To America: How Consular Absolutism Leads To Discrimination, Justina Fakhry Jan 2026

Coming To America: How Consular Absolutism Leads To Discrimination, Justina Fakhry

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This Note critiques a pervasive mode of discrimination that goes unchecked. Consular absolutism allows consular immigration officers to make discriminatory visa decisions, which are not subject to review. This Note begins with a discussion of the case law that developed the concept of consular absolutism, primarily by analyzing the Supreme Court’s gloss on the plenary power of the federal government in the realm of immigration. This Note then discusses how courts have built upon the plenary power doctrine to establish consular absolutism.

This Note suggests that Congress should amend the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to grant a private right …

Paving The Way For Inclusion By Way Of Exclusion From Standardized Testing, Olivia R. Leon

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

Legislation protecting the rights of disabled students has continuously evolved over time, with each revision containing a similar goal of promoting the inclusion of disabled students within the public education system. However, despite numerous revisions and evolutions, the finish line of inclusivity has yet to effectively be reached.

This Article discusses legislation aimed at protecting the educational rights of disabled students, and how standardized testing provisions within said legislation may be counterintuitively hindering progress towards inclusivity. More specifically, this Article dives into Every Student Succeeds Act and its consequentially exclusory standardized testing provisions, focusing on the Act’s ninety-five percent participation …

This paper describes the evolution of a research-practice partnership (RPP) designed to understand the impact of data-informed decision making initiatives on supporting ambitious mathematics instruction and how middle-school based mathematics specialists facilitate those initiatives. While school-university partnerships have a history of designing, implementing, and studying instructional improvement efforts, the impact of such efforts on practice is not clear (Cai et al., 2017b; Denner et al., 2019; Henrick et al., 2016). Over the first three years of our partnership, we have collected data from a variety of sources and shared them in ongoing data conversations with a range of district-level collaborators. …

The Apathy Economy: Patents, Advertising, And Consumer Indifference, Gavin J. Milczarek-Desai, Derek E. Bambauer Jan 2026

The Apathy Economy: Patents, Advertising, And Consumer Indifference, Gavin J. Milczarek-Desai, Derek E. Bambauer

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Patents function as signals as well as rights to exclude. They inform competitors, investors, employees, and consumers about the invention and its owner. How this information affects consumers is not well understood. Existing studies disagree about how advertising a product or service as patented, or patent pending, affects the price consumers will pay. This Article offers the first major empirical study of that question andfinds that consumers behave with surprising rationality: they will not pay any price premium for a patented product. A product's patent status conveys little information about whether it is superior to competing offerings. The results hold …
