Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

For aqueous lithium-ion batteries (A-LIBs), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) poses a significant challenge, as it competes with the primary electrochemical processes of the anode, resulting in capacity loss and reduced cycling stability. In this study, we investigate the use of fluorine-based additives in anodes to mitigate HER in LIBs with aqueous electrolytes including low or high amounts of salt (water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSE)). We synthesized and incorporated three distinct materials into TiO2(B) anodes: aluminum fluoride (AlF3), lithium fluoride (LiF), and 1H,1H,2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FAS) using a solution-based method. Among these fluorides containing composite anodes, FAS containing anodes delayed HER onset potentials …

The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

Measures from affinity-proteomics platforms often correlate poorly, challenging interpretation of protein associations with genetic variants and phenotypes. Here, we examine 2157 proteins measured on both SomaScan 7k and Olink Explore 3072 across 1930 participants with genetic similarity to European, African, East Asian, and Admixed American ancestry references. Inter-platform correlation coefficients for these 2157 proteins follow a bimodal distribution (median r = 0.30). We evaluate protein measure associations with genetic variants, and find approximately 25-30% of the signals on each platform are likely driven by protein-altering variants. We highlight 80 proteins that correlate differently across ancestry groups likely in part due …

Evaluation Of Adalimumab Tapering Regimens In Children And Adolescents With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis In Remission: A Simulation Study, Dominic S Bräm, Verena Gotta, Gilbert Koch, Klervi Golhen, Andreas Woerner, Andrew Atkinson, Johannes N Van Den Anker, Marc Pfister, Tatjana Welzel Jan 2026

Evaluation Of Adalimumab Tapering Regimens In Children And Adolescents With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis In Remission: A Simulation Study, Dominic S Bräm, Verena Gotta, Gilbert Koch, Klervi Golhen, Andreas Woerner, Andrew Atkinson, Johannes N Van Den Anker, Marc Pfister, Tatjana Welzel

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Adalimumab (ADM) in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is usually dosed using fixed weight-based bands (label dosing: 20 mg for <  30 kg, 40 mg for ≥ 30 kg) every other week (EOW). This has been shown to result in higher exposure after remission than targeted in adult patients with rheumatic diseases (trough concentrations of 2–8 mg/L) suggesting possibility of treatment adjustments and tapering, particularly in children weighing 30 to 50 kg. A pharmacometric simulation study was performed to evaluate different ADM dosing regimens supported by therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to provide insights for JIA management in remission. METHODS: This simulation study used a previously established pharmacokinetic ADM model. Simulation scenarios included dose reduction to 30 mg in children 30 to 50 kg and interval extension from 14 to 21 or 28 days. To further personalize ADM dosing and avoid exposure above predefined target range, TDM-guided tapering within mentioned simulation scenarios was investigated, i.e., adjusting dosing interval in children and adolescents whose ADM trough concentrations were above the upper limit of the predefined ADM target range of 9 mg/L. Proportions of virtual patients within the extrapolated target exposure range from adults including a safety-margin, i.e., 4–9 mg/L, were assessed and compared to label dosing, stratified by body weight. RESULTS: In children and adolescents with JIA weighing 30 to 50 kg both, dose interval extension to 21 days and dose reduction to 30 mg EOW increased proportion of patients within predefined target range from 17 - 29% (label dose regimen) to 34–43% or 28–43%, respectively. TDM-guided tapering for patients with trough concentrations > 9 mg/L further increased proportion with target exposure to 56–63% while keeping the proportion of patients with trough concentrations <  2 mg/L similar to label dosing (≤ 2%). CONCLUSION: This simulation study suggests that ADM tapering, in children with JIA who reached remission, may be applicable. Appropriate ADM dose reduction or dose interval extension, especially when supported by TDM, could help to reduce treatment-related and socioeconomic burden, while minimize risk of underexposure. Provided simulation framework can be validated and further fine-tuned once paediatric exposure-response data and target ranges have been established.

Effects Of Oral Exams On Entry-Level Stem Mathematics Students, Krysten A. Pampel

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

This study investigates the efficacy of oral examinations as an alternative assessment method in college algebra courses, focusing on their impact on student retention of mathematical concepts. Through a comparative analysis of two groups, one undergoing traditional assessment and the other receiving oral examinations, this research explores both quantitative assessment scores and qualitative feedback. While quantitative analysis reveals no significant difference in summative assessment performance between the two groups, qualitative data highlights the benefits of oral examinations, including immediate feedback, enhanced critical thinking, and holistic evaluation of student capabilities. Despite limitations in sample size, the study suggests that oral examinations …

Political Posters, Periperformativity, And Power: An Analysis Of The Connections Between An Activist Movement’S Image And Sound, Adeline Navarro

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

This essay aims to reconcile a gap in scholarship on the AIDS crisis as prior scholars have looked at ACT UP’s image, only recently focusing on their sound. First, this essay argues that we can gain a better understanding of the relationship between ACT UP’s image and sound, specifically its political posters and subsequent chants, by using Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s theory of periperformativity to examine the periperformative dimension of these chants and thus the power they lend ACT UP members during civil disobedience demonstrations. Second, it argues that the periperformative has the capacity to register historical change because it is …

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely Jan 2026

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

As a value-driven and transformative approach to criminal justice, restorative justice is inherently philosophical. Despite this, however, its philosophical underpinnings remain underdeveloped. This manuscript argues for the necessity of grounding restorative justice in moral philosophy, specifically through the framework offered by Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach. The paper first addresses the fragmented nature of restorative justice values, suggesting a new uniform framework centered on respect, equality, agency, and active striving. It then explores what victims are materially owed in the restorative justice process, advancing Nussbaum’s list of basic capabilities as a foundation. However, the central aim of this manuscript transcends these …

Measuring Finance Majors' Communications Abilities Using Aacsb Best Practices For Aol Processes Jan 2026

Measuring Finance Majors' Communications Abilities Using Aacsb Best Practices For Aol Processes

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

AACSB accreditation of an undergraduate business degree program requires that the institution enumerate its learning goals and demonstrate the successful student’s attainment thereof. AACSB mandates that learning goals be both consistent with the institution’s mission statement and measurable. This study describes the AOL process for assuring oral and written communications abilities in the finance major curriculum. Among finance majors, the findings reveal an adequate level of oral communications skills but written communications skills below the appropriate level for the finance professional. The results reveal that lack of performance is a function of skill and not writing apprehension for this set …

Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We propose that the study of economics can be enhanced by students learning ethical reasoning within their economics courses. Our method for introducing more robust discussions of the relationship between ethics and economics is to incorporate principles and strategies from the “Ethics Across the Curriculum” program. The methods we used to enhance our own course can be adapted to any economics course and the resources we provide can help any economist become more comfortable with teaching ethical reasoning.

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter? Jan 2026

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter?

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We use a binary probit model to assess the impact of several changes in math prerequisites on student performance in an undergraduate business statistics course. While the initial prerequisites did not necessarily provide students with the necessary math skills, our study, the first to examine the effect of math prerequisite changes, shows that these changes were deleterious to student performance. Our results helped convince the College of Business to change the math prerequisite again beginning with the 2008/2009 academic year. Thus, this study is also the first to actually help strengthen math prerequisites and improve student performance in business statistics.
