Targeting Smpdl3b To Ameliorate Radiation- And Cisplatin-Induced Renal Toxicity, Youssef Zeidan Jan 2026

Targeting Smpdl3b To Ameliorate Radiation- And Cisplatin-Induced Renal Toxicity, Youssef Zeidan

All Publications

Kidney toxicity remains a major dose-limiting complication of radiation therapy and platinum-based chemotherapy, yet the molecular determinants of renal susceptibility and resilience to these genotoxic treatments are incompletely understood. Podocytes are particularly vulnerable to such insults, and emerging evidence implicates lipid dysregulation in podocyte injury. This study investigated the role of sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase acid-like 3B (SMPDL3B), a podocyte-enriched lipid-modulating enzyme, in radiation- and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Using a doxycycline-inducible, podocyte-specific SMPDL3B transgenic mouse model, renal injury was assessed following focal kidney irradiation, cisplatin administration, or their combination through functional assays, histopathology, ultrastructural analysis, immunofluorescence, and targeted lipidomics. Combined radiation and cisplatin …

Spurious Elevations Of Chromogranin A In The Setting Of Autoimmune Metaplastic Atrophic Gastritis, Elizabeth Jose, Ariana Ambrosio, Jesse F. Simon, Jeffrey H. Schneider Jan 2026

Spurious Elevations Of Chromogranin A In The Setting Of Autoimmune Metaplastic Atrophic Gastritis, Elizabeth Jose, Ariana Ambrosio, Jesse F. Simon, Jeffrey H. Schneider

Student Publications

Autoimmune metaplastic gastritis (AMAG) is a form of autoimmune gastritis that is characterized by the immune system’s attack on gastric parietal cells, leading to chronic inflammation. Gastric neuroendocrine tumors (GNETs) are rare neoplasms that can develop in the gastrointestinal tract in the presence of AMAG. This case presents a 69-year-old female who presented with dyspepsia, and on subsequent endoscopic evaluation, she was found to have AMAG in the context of elevated levels of serum chromogranin A (CgA) and gastrin, suggestive of a GNET. Despite an extensive diagnostic workup, including imaging, colonoscopy, small bowel follow-through, capsule study, and oncology workup, no …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

The Effect Of Fluorides In The Tio2(B) Anode On The Hydrogen Evolution Reaction In Aqueous Electrolytes, Khoi-Nguyen Nguyen, Lam Hoang Nguyen, Jozel John Salvacion, Nam Huu Nhat Nguyen, Samuel Ming Tuk Yeung, Seung Woo Lee, Liat Rosenfeld, Chengyu Song, Dahyun Oh Jan 2026

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

For aqueous lithium-ion batteries (A-LIBs), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) poses a significant challenge, as it competes with the primary electrochemical processes of the anode, resulting in capacity loss and reduced cycling stability. In this study, we investigate the use of fluorine-based additives in anodes to mitigate HER in LIBs with aqueous electrolytes including low or high amounts of salt (water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSE)). We synthesized and incorporated three distinct materials into TiO2(B) anodes: aluminum fluoride (AlF3), lithium fluoride (LiF), and 1H,1H,2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FAS) using a solution-based method. Among these fluorides containing composite anodes, FAS containing anodes delayed HER onset potentials …

Measures from affinity-proteomics platforms often correlate poorly, challenging interpretation of protein associations with genetic variants and phenotypes. Here, we examine 2157 proteins measured on both SomaScan 7k and Olink Explore 3072 across 1930 participants with genetic similarity to European, African, East Asian, and Admixed American ancestry references. Inter-platform correlation coefficients for these 2157 proteins follow a bimodal distribution (median r = 0.30). We evaluate protein measure associations with genetic variants, and find approximately 25-30% of the signals on each platform are likely driven by protein-altering variants. We highlight 80 proteins that correlate differently across ancestry groups likely in part due …

Political Posters, Periperformativity, And Power: An Analysis Of The Connections Between An Activist Movement’S Image And Sound, Adeline Navarro Jan 2026

Political Posters, Periperformativity, And Power: An Analysis Of The Connections Between An Activist Movement’S Image And Sound, Adeline Navarro

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

This essay aims to reconcile a gap in scholarship on the AIDS crisis as prior scholars have looked at ACT UP’s image, only recently focusing on their sound. First, this essay argues that we can gain a better understanding of the relationship between ACT UP’s image and sound, specifically its political posters and subsequent chants, by using Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s theory of periperformativity to examine the periperformative dimension of these chants and thus the power they lend ACT UP members during civil disobedience demonstrations. Second, it argues that the periperformative has the capacity to register historical change because it is …

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely Jan 2026

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

As a value-driven and transformative approach to criminal justice, restorative justice is inherently philosophical. Despite this, however, its philosophical underpinnings remain underdeveloped. This manuscript argues for the necessity of grounding restorative justice in moral philosophy, specifically through the framework offered by Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach. The paper first addresses the fragmented nature of restorative justice values, suggesting a new uniform framework centered on respect, equality, agency, and active striving. It then explores what victims are materially owed in the restorative justice process, advancing Nussbaum’s list of basic capabilities as a foundation. However, the central aim of this manuscript transcends these …

Specific policy and process measures to improve the experiences of future Fulbright Scholars are suggested.

Measuring Finance Majors' Communications Abilities Using Aacsb Best Practices For Aol Processes Jan 2026

Measuring Finance Majors' Communications Abilities Using Aacsb Best Practices For Aol Processes

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

AACSB accreditation of an undergraduate business degree program requires that the institution enumerate its learning goals and demonstrate the successful student’s attainment thereof. AACSB mandates that learning goals be both consistent with the institution’s mission statement and measurable. This study describes the AOL process for assuring oral and written communications abilities in the finance major curriculum. Among finance majors, the findings reveal an adequate level of oral communications skills but written communications skills below the appropriate level for the finance professional. The results reveal that lack of performance is a function of skill and not writing apprehension for this set …

Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We propose that the study of economics can be enhanced by students learning ethical reasoning within their economics courses. Our method for introducing more robust discussions of the relationship between ethics and economics is to incorporate principles and strategies from the “Ethics Across the Curriculum” program. The methods we used to enhance our own course can be adapted to any economics course and the resources we provide can help any economist become more comfortable with teaching ethical reasoning.

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter? Jan 2026

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter?

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We use a binary probit model to assess the impact of several changes in math prerequisites on student performance in an undergraduate business statistics course. While the initial prerequisites did not necessarily provide students with the necessary math skills, our study, the first to examine the effect of math prerequisite changes, shows that these changes were deleterious to student performance. Our results helped convince the College of Business to change the math prerequisite again beginning with the 2008/2009 academic year. Thus, this study is also the first to actually help strengthen math prerequisites and improve student performance in business statistics.
