Teach-In On Venezuela And Us Interventions In Latin America, Dr. Bill Stanley, Dr. Mark Peceny

LAII Events

On January 3, 2026, following months of attacks on alleged drug smuggling boats and the seizure and blockade of Venezuelan oil tankers, the US launched a military strike on Caracas, Venezuela. President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken from their home and brought to the US to face criminal charges, while the Trump administration seeks to assert control over the Venezuelan oil industry. These events and their possible consequences will be considered within the broader context and history of US interventions in Latin America. There will be short presentations by Professors Mark Peceny (Political Science) and William …

Taking Pride In Vegan Consumption: A Construal Level Theory Account Of Ad Message Appeal And Future Self Connectedness, Mona Safizadeh, Atefeh Yazdanparast, Reto Felix Jan 2026

Taking Pride In Vegan Consumption: A Construal Level Theory Account Of Ad Message Appeal And Future Self Connectedness, Mona Safizadeh, Atefeh Yazdanparast, Reto Felix

Marketing Faculty Publications

Despite growing interest in vegan products, research examining the motivations, underlying psychological processes, and boundary conditions that drive consumer preference for vegan products remains limited. Drawing on theories of temporal self and appraisal theory, we find that an immediate message appeal (e.g., animal welfare), as compared to a future outcome message appeal (e.g., environmental benefits), leads to higher preference for vegan products. Anticipated consumption pride, but not guilt, mediates this relationship, highlighting the role of positive emotions in shaping ethical behavior. Furthermore, we examine how aligning the temporal orientation of advertising message appeals with individuals' construal mindsets, as primed by …

The bilingual FAIRmaterials package simplifies the creation and visualization of materials and data science ontologies. FAIRmaterials, available in the Python and R languages, addresses the complexities associated with traditional ontology editors based on manual user input such as Protege (Musen, 2015) with an intuitive workflow and easy-to-use templates, making it accessible to users both experienced and inexperienced with ontologies. The FAIRmaterials package is its ability to programatically convert simple and structured CSV inputs into rich, well-defined ontologies. This capability is designed to support the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) (Wilkinson et al., 2016) of research data and serve as …

Habitat Diversity Or Altitudinal Gradient? Which Factor Better Explains Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Biodiversity? A Case Study From Davraz Mountain (Isparta, Türkiye), Ebru Ceren Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Gök Jan 2026

Habitat Diversity Or Altitudinal Gradient? Which Factor Better Explains Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Biodiversity? A Case Study From Davraz Mountain (Isparta, Türkiye), Ebru Ceren Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Gök

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Ground beetle (Carabidae) species diversity and spatial distribution were surveyed  across five habitat types along an elevational gradient on Davraz Mountain, a  biogeographical transition area in southwestern Türkiye. The analyses showed that  habitat heterogeneity—particularly soil moisture and texture—exerts a stronger  influence on carabid diversity than elevation. Sørensen’s and Jaccard similarity  indices showed strong faunal overlap between some sampling areas, while  multivariate principal components and canonical correspondence analyses verified  distinct environmental gradients influencing community structure. Diversity indices  indicated varying levels of species richness and evenness across sampling areas.  The data highlight the importance of fine-scaled habitat features in driving ground  beetle …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The common sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) is an invasive fish found in Siberian  water bodies, the trophic interactions and impact on local ecosystems of which  remain poorly understood. Traditional diet analyses are limited by the mechanical  damage to the prey. For the present study, therefore, we employed DNA  metabarcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) gene to analyze the digestive  tract contents of the common sunbleak obtained from Irkutsk Reservoir. Our analysis  revealed 53 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with sequences of amphibiotic  insects (58.66%) and fish (34.10%) being the most prevalent. A significant proportion  of the fish DNA, including sequences …

Distribution Of Mussels In Two Intermittent Upland Streams Of The Arkansas Valley Ecoregion, A. A. Brady, K. B. Hecke, S. A. Drake, Z. R. Crain, K. Moles

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Freshwater mussels are facing an increasing need for conservation due to their declining populations. More data is needed on mussel distributions, especially in tributaries of large rivers to properly conserve and restore populations. Big Shoal Creek and Little Shoal Creek are two upland-tributaries of the Arkansas River (Lake Dardanelle) in which no records exist for freshwater mussel populations. We addressed this knowledge gap by sampling a total of 9 sites in Little Shoal Creek and 18 sites in Big Shoal Creek to determine the abundance and distribution of mussels in these streams. Mussels were sampled using a timed-search approach. A …

Atherogenic Index Of Plasma’S Association With Coronary Heart Disease Risks Among Postmenopausal Pakistani Women, Amad Khan, Syed Kashif Raza Jan 2026

Atherogenic Index Of Plasma’S Association With Coronary Heart Disease Risks Among Postmenopausal Pakistani Women, Amad Khan, Syed Kashif Raza

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading global cause of mortality, notably affecting postmenopausal women. Hormonal fluctuations during menopause contribute to dyslipidemia, fostering cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study explored lipid profiles among postmenopausal Pakistani women, focusing on the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and its association with CHD.

The data consisted of surveys from 265 women aged between 40–70 years. A STEP-wise approach, using a questionnaire from the World Health Organization, was employed for data collection. This quantitative cross-sectional study, guided by the socioecological model, examined links between AIP, age, lipid profiles, and hypertension. The AIP’s association with CHD was …

Disruptive Religion And Ethical Opposition: The Force Of Moral Authority In Indonesia’S Democratic Consolidation, Savran Billahi, Idris Thaha, Suryani Suryani, Mohammad Ezha Fachriza

Jurnal Wacana Politik

This article argues that democratic consolidation in Indonesia cannot be explained solely through the performance of formal institutions. By foregrounding ethical opposition as a missing variable in dominant consolidation theories, it shows that democracy has also been sustained by a normative infrastructure that legitimizes critique beyond institutional arenas. Based on qualitative historical analysis of Abdurrahman Wahid’s and Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s oppositional practices under the New Order and in the post-Reformasi period, the article finds that moral authority enabled non-institutional opposition to constrain state power, normalize dissent, and protect democratic quality. While both figures articulated a corrective and non-subversive mode of …

Legal Paradoxes Of Transition: Transitional Justice And The Rule Of Law Between Nürnberg And Saddam Hussein Trials, Rasha Abdelsamea Ahmed Baghdadi Jan 2026

Legal Paradoxes Of Transition: Transitional Justice And The Rule Of Law Between Nürnberg And Saddam Hussein Trials, Rasha Abdelsamea Ahmed Baghdadi

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This thesis critically examines the legal paradoxes embedded within transitional justice (TJ) discourse, using the Nürnberg and Saddam Hussein trials as case studies to interrogate the complex relationship between justice and the rule of law in TJ discourse. It highlights the inherent tension between forward-looking societal reforms and the pursuit of backward-looking justice, challenging the foundational assumptions of TJ as a universal tool for justice and peace. It also questions the validity and credibility of "transition" as a phase between the past and the future. It contends that TJ, driven by Western liberal epistemic foundations, functions as an exclusionary …

Early Detection Of Bladder Cancer Using Advanced Feature Engineering And Swarm Intelligence Optimization On Ehrs, Xu Wang, Andrea Preston, Jonathan Aning, Michael Loizou, Shang-Ming Zhou

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background: Bladder cancer (BC) symptoms often overlap with benign conditions, while no routine screening exists for general population. We aim to develop a machine learning (ML)-based screening pipeline for early BC detection using electronic-health-records (EHRs) in primary care. Methods: A multi-centred case-control cohort (1995–2018; n = 64,884) was created for model training and testing. We further validated the model prospectively on an independent cohort (2019–2020; n = 4,569). We proposed the Parsimony driven REweighting for Calibrated Input-based Screening for Early detection—Adjustable Grey Zone (PRECISE-AGZ), which identified influential features from 48,261 candidates and developed a calibrated logistic regression screening model with …

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram Jan 2026

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

In Fiji, physicality and hegemonic masculinity are largely defined by rugby and the military, institutions dominated by Indigenous Fijian men, who are predominantly Christian, often marginalising other races, genders, religions, and sports. While research in the Global South has examined intersections of race and gender, little is known about how masculinity is understood across different sports, sporting icons, and contexts—particularly from the perspective of South Asian migrant women in Oceania with hybrid identities. This paper investigates how young Indo-Fijian women negotiate masculinity, identity, and agency through sport, Bollywood cinema, social media, and cultural narratives. Drawing on a year-long, multi-method participatory …

Revealing The Fuel Of A Quantum Continuous Measurement-Based Refrigerator, Cyril Elouard, Sreenath K. Manikandan, Andrew N. Jordan, Géraldine Haack

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

While quantum measurements have been shown to constitute a resource for operating quantum thermal machines, the nature of the energy exchanges involved in the interaction between system and measuring apparatus is still under debate. In this work, we show that a microscopic model of the apparatus is necessary to unambiguously determine whether quantum measurements provide energy in the form of heat or work. We illustrate this result by considering a measurement-based refrigerator, made of a double quantum dot embedded in a two-terminal device, with the charge of one of the dots being continuously monitored. Tuning the parameters of the measurement …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Terrestrial sources of carbon and nutrients drive biogeochemical cycles in coastal regions and in the global ocean. Quantifying their impact on the spatiotemporal variability of the ocean carbon cycle is pivotal to understanding the distinctive characteristics of ocean basins dominated by riverine inflow. ECCO-Darwin is a data-constrained, global-ocean biogeochemistry model that has heretofore lacked lateral inputs of carbon and nutrients. The objective of this study is to add this new capability to ECCO-Darwin and to carry out a suite of sensitivity experiments in order to quantify the impact of these lateral fluxes on coastal- and open-ocean biogeochemistry. In this work, …

Stressors And Challenges Faced By Mexican American Caregivers Of Family Members With Alzheimer’S Disease, Romeo Escobar, Denise Longoria, John M. Gonzalez, Nelda Rodriguez

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Mexican American caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease face unique stressors and challenges, which may be influenced by cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic factors. This population often assumes caregiving responsibilities based on strong cultural values of familismo which emphasizes family duty and collective care. However, this commitment can lead to increased emotional strain, mental health concerns, financial and physical strain, particularly when caregivers have limited access to healthcare resources, financial support, or respite. Language barriers and a lack of culturally competent healthcare services can further exacerbate stress, making it difficult to navigate the complex healthcare system. The purpose of this study …

Reprioritizing International Patent Law, John R. Thomas Jan 2026

Reprioritizing International Patent Law, John R. Thomas

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Over the past half-century, rapid technological change and globalization have reshaped innovation and intellectual property, yet the foundational international agreements anchoring the global patent system have remained essentially unchanged. The drafters of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) viewed these agreements as dynamic instruments that, through procedural coordination, would rationalize international patent administration. The Paris Convention has resisted reform for decades, however, while the PCT has failed to achieve its goals of reducing examination workloads and fostering worksharing among national patent offices. It now exacerbates the very inefficiencies it sought to …

Governing Debt’S Dominion: Then And Now, Here And Abroad, Brook E. Gotberg

BYU Law Review

Widely regarded as a landmark in bankruptcy scholarship, Professor David Skeel’s Debt’s Dominion charts the evolution of American corporate bankruptcy law and the forces that have governed it.1 In this seminal work, Skeel traces federal bankruptcy laws from their roots in the U.S. Constitution through their development over the twentieth century, detailing the political dynamics that shaped their scope and administration. Among those dynamics, he identifies the emergence of a specialized bankruptcy bar as one of the most influential forces shaping the law. As he explains, “bankruptcy professionals have spearheaded a relentless expansion of both the scope of the bankruptcy …

Jeffrey Kim, Christopher Zalewski, Ashok Asthagiri, Sruthi Ranganathan, Christina Hayes, John D. Heiss, John A. Butman, Prashant Chittiboina

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The onset of hearing loss due to vestibular schwannomas (VS) is inevitable but does not correlate with the size of the tumor. In patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and VS, we previously found an association between pre-contrast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (FLAIR MRI) signal in the labyrinth and hearing loss. Here, we asked whether FLAIR hyper-intensity could serve as a predictive biomarker for hearing loss in NF2 patients with VS.

METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study (NCT00598351) of NF2 enrolled 168 subjects between 2008 and 2013. This study included 34 patients with small VS (total …
