Trapped And Traumatised: A Scoping Review Of The Psychological Sequelae Of Entrapment Following Motor Vehicle Collision, Thomas A.M. Dixon, Kara Hole, Louise Johnson, Tim Nutbeam
Peninsula Medical School
Background: Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are a significant public health challenge, resulting in substantial mortality and morbidity. Entrapment occurs in 12–33% of all MVCs and is associated with greater injury severity, longer on-scene time, and increased mortality. However, the psychological consequences of entrapment remain poorly characterised. Objectives: This scoping review seeks to establish the current understanding of the psychological sequelae of entrapment following MVCs and draws on insights from related fields of study in order to inform future research and clinical practice. Methods: A scoping review was undertaken following established methodological guidance. Searches were completed on NHS Knowledge and Library …

Iron is an essential nutrient for almost all organisms. However, excess iron generates reactive oxygen species and causes tissue injuries. Iron is implicated in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In this study, we examined iron accumulation in fibrotic lung fibroblasts and the underlying mechanisms. We hypothesize that the downregulation of Solute Carrier Family 40 Member 1 (SLC40A1) results in iron accumulation in lung fibroblasts of IPF patients. Using a Prussian Blue iron staining, we found that iron accumulated in the fibrotic region of the lungs from IPF patients and bleomycin- and asbestos-induced lung fibrosis mice. Iron was partially co-localized with the …

The origin of cancer is poorly understood because premalignant cells are rarely followed in their native environments. Although the spatial compartmentalization of metabolic functions is critical for proper liver function, it is unknown whether cancers arise from some zones but not others and whether there are metabolic determinants of cancer risk. Zone-specific, mosaic introduction of Ctnnb1 (catenin beta 1) and Arid2 (AT-rich interaction domain 2) mutations, commonly co-mutated genes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in mouse models showed that position and metabolic context determine clone fates. Ctnnb1/Arid2-driven cancers were much more likely to arise in zone 3. The …

A High-Resolution Daily Precipitation Fusion Framework Integrating Radar, Satellite, And Nwp Data Using Machine Learning Over South Korea, Hyoju Park, Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Menas Kafatos, Seung Hee Kim, Yangwon Lee
Institute for ECHO Articles and Research
Accurate precipitation mapping is essential for effective disaster management; however, individual radar, satellite, and numerical weather prediction products often struggle in the topographically complex terrain of South Korea. This study proposes a high-resolution (~500 m) daily precipitation fusion framework that integrates Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) radar, Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), and Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) data. The framework employs a Random Forest model augmented with a monthly Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function (ECDF) correction. Auxiliary predictors are incorporated to enhance physical interpretability and stability, including terrain attributes to represent orographic effects, land-cover …

Galway: Making A Capital Of Culture (Patrick Collins, Orpen Press, 2023), Connell Vaughan
Galway: Making A Capital Of Culture (Patrick Collins, Orpen Press, 2023), Connell Vaughan
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Patrick Collins’ recent book details the development of the cultural industries and placemaking in the Galway region over the past century or so. Focusing on the “peripheral” position of the region, its long relationship to film making, and informed by Galway’s successful application for the European Capital of Culture in 2020, Collins argues for the unique nature of the region as a site of cultural production and consumption. While the book offers moments of insight, particularly in its discussion of ‘festivalisation’, it ultimately lacks the analytical depth and coherence needed to fully capture Galway’s complex cultural identity. No sustained critical …

Changing Patterns Of Psychotropics Use Among Older Adults With Intellectual Disability Over A Decade, With A Focus On Designated Mental Health Conditions, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
ABSTRACTBackground: Psychotropics (sometimes off-label), mental health diagnoses and behaviours of concern are common in olderadults with intellectual disability. Guidelines recommend non-pharmacological interventions and regular medication review. This study examined changes in psychotropics among older adults (≥40) with intellectual disability. Methods: Longitudinal data were obtained from the Intellectual Disability Supplement to the Irish Longitudinal Study onAgeing (IDS-TILDA) at two timepoints [Wave 1(2009/10); Wave 4(2019/20)]. Post hoc analysis, Chi-squared tests and univariatebinary logistic regression were conducted. Results: Overall, psychotropics decreased (59.2% to 56.5%). Significant decreases in antipsychotics (43.1%–40.1%) and sedatives/hypnotics (13.6%–8.1%) and significant increase in antidepressants (26.2%–31.8%) were found. Nearly half of antidepressant usersreported depression …

The Appellate Division reversed a lower court's order, dismissing as time-barred an Article 78 petition challenging the landlord's 2024 denial of the tenant's request for Section 8 subsidy restoration. The court held that the four-month statute of limitations under CPLR 217(1) began in December 2019 when the tenant's Section 8 benefits were initially terminated and the "final and binding" decision was issued. Subsequent administrative requests for restoration or ongoing correspondence with the agency did not constitute a new determination or toll the statute of limitations, rendering the tenant's later petition untimely.

Criminal law purports to care about the individual culpability of those committing crimes. Individual mental states or defenses based on one’s beliefs are considered foundational to moral responsibility and criminal conviction. The expansion of algorithmic risk assessment tools in the criminal legal system, however, threatens these principles, changing the criminal law subject from an autonomous individual to merely a predicted object. This Article argues that risk assessment tools—now functioning as gatekeepers at both the entry and exit stages of the criminal process, from predictive policing to compassionate release eligibility—have shifted the criminal system away from its foundation in individual culpability. …

Chondrosarcomas are rare cartilaginous neoplasms with limited treatment options. Isocitrate dehydrogenase 1/2 (mIDH1/2) mutations occur in 65% of chondrosarcomas. Here we report safety and efficacy of olutasidenib, an mIDH1 inhibitor, evaluated in patients with locally advanced or metastatic mIDH1 chondrosarcoma (Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT03684811). The primary endpoint was objective response rate by tumor evaluation; secondary endpoints included adverse events, progression-free and overall survival. Patients received olutasidenib 150 mg twice daily. Twenty-three patients were enrolled; 16 were diagnosed with conventional chondrosarcoma (cCS). Median age was 57 (range, 30-71) years. In 21 response-evaluable patients, 11 (52%) had stable disease, 8 (38%) had progressive …
