Unlocking Hope: Mirtazapine's Promise In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treatment, Rebecca K. Hicks, Iram Kingson, Jordan Gaal, Suzanne Holroyd
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric condition characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are first-line treatments for OCD, a significant proportion of patients remain refractory to these interventions. Mirtazapine, an atypical antidepressant with unique pharmacological properties, has emerged as a potential adjunctive therapy for treatment-resistant OCD. This review synthesizes existing evidence regarding the efficacy and safety profile of mirtazapine in OCD management. We analyze clinical trials, observational studies, and case reports, distinguishing high- vs. low-quality evidence, and discuss mechanisms underlying mirtazapine's therapeutic effects. Additionally, …

An Enlarging Nodule On The Eyelid: A Case Of Apocrine Adenocarcinoma And Diagnostic Challenges, Kristen E. Bowman, Tyler Van Auken, Erin Reese, David Webb
Marshall Journal of Medicine
This is the case of a 49-year-old female who presented with a chronic, irritated lesion on her left upper eyelid. Following wide local excision, histopathological examination revealed a well-circumscribed lesion consistent with apocrine adenocarcinoma (AC). AC is a rare malignant tumor arising from apocrine sweat glands, typically found in the axillary and anogenital regions. Occasionally, it can present on the eyelid arising from specialized apocrine structures such as Moll’s glands.. AC of the eyelid is often misdiagnosed due to its clinical resemblance to benign conditions such as chalazion, potentially delaying appropriate treatment. Diagnosis relies heavily on histopathology and may be …
More Than A Healthcare Issue: Understanding The Breadth Of Occupational Burnout In Our Patients, Aliza Anderson*, Julia Maniccia*, Marc Moss
More Than A Healthcare Issue: Understanding The Breadth Of Occupational Burnout In Our Patients, Aliza Anderson*, Julia Maniccia*, Marc Moss
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Burnout is an occupation-related condition resulting from chronic workplace stress and is associated with significant psychological and physical morbidity. This commentary recognizes burnout as a public health concern across both healthcare and non-healthcare professions, illuminates key occupational risk and protective factors, reviews the biopsychosocial impacts of burnout, and argues for the integration of occupational health screening into clinical practice. A synthesis of the literature highlighted that existing research has focused primarily on healthcare occupations; however, emerging evidence demonstrates an elevated burnout risk in numerous non-healthcare occupations. Characterized by high job demands, limited autonomy, inadequate social support, and physically demanding labor, …

"Upgrading" Market Legitimation: Revisiting Habermas's 'Technology As Ideology' In Neoliberal Times, Eran Fisher
Fast Capitalism
This paper revisits Habermas’s notion of ‘technology as ideology’ in the context of contemporary political culture. It argues that the methodological and substantive contours of Habermas’s framework are still valid today. However, the role that technology plays as ideology has changed dramatically in the context of contemporary capitalism. No longer does it provide a legitimation for the political administration of the economy in the context of the Social Democratic state; instead, it legitimizes a new, neoliberal regime, whereby political intervention in the workings of the market is highly prohibited. This argument is substantiated with an empirical analysis of contemporary discourse …

Online Democratic Deliberation In A Time Of Information Abundance, Craig Bellamy
Fast Capitalism
The intensified use of the Internet by civil society groups and governments for political purposes has left many questions unexplained—especially in terms of the Internet’s effects upon deliberative democratic processes. The Internet was first imagined as a means to revitalize deliberative processes. However, poor design and lack of usability research meant that many ambitions went largely unrealized. With a new wave of Internet technologies, ‘deliberative design’ has become even more important to stem what many claim is a trend towards political fragmentation and disaggregation. In a time of ‘information abundance’ mounting political communication online may also undermine collectivist, deliberative democratic …

For some of us, one of the biggest surprises of the 2006 Big Brother show was not the winner, Pete Bennett, but, according to The Guardian newspaper, the fact that “[a]fter seven years, the BB brand is stronger than ever” (Lawson 2006:3). The fact that cultural critics are wishing the show away at the point at which it has reached its popular cultural zenith of mass appeal is significant in that it is indicative of a widely held position, which readily equates (mass) media culture with bad or low culture, frightening, out of bounds, vulgar and excessive (Skeggs 2005a). At …

"The disease of reason is that reason was born from man’s urge to dominate nature." —Max Horkheimer, Eclipse of Reason (1947)
In the fuller passage from which this extract is taken, Horkheimer locates the origins of the ‘collective madness’ of modern times in ‘in primitive objectification, in the first man’s calculating contemplation of the world as prey’ (176). Perhaps all one can say in response is, if this diagnosis is correct, there is certainly no cure, so we might as well get on with our lives.
In the early sections of this paper I will first note briefly the argument …

Child Poverty Typologies And Protective Factors In Scavenger Communities: Implications For Participatory Social Development Strategies, Debrina Vita Ferezagia, Budiman Mahmud Musthofa
Jurnal Vokasi Indonesia
This study aims to develop a typology of child poverty and identify protective factors that can support the formulation of social development strategies. The research was conducted through a case study in a scavenger settlement area in Jakarta using a qualitative approach, through observations and in-depth interviews. The findings show that child poverty in scavenger communities can be categorized into three main dimensions: material poverty, opportunity poverty, and relational poverty. However, behind these vulnerabilities, several protective factors play a crucial role in sustaining the resilience of both children and the community. In the dimension of material poverty, although children face …

Doc 2010-04 (Amended) The Common Academic Program, University Of Dayton. Academic Policies Committee
Senate Documents
The University of Dayton first adopted its General Education Program for all undergraduate students in the Fall of 1983 when Senate Doc #81-2 was approved. Its stated purpose was to make “students aware of the diversity of intellectual thought and theory represented by the sciences, the humanities and the social sciences. In addition, the general education component offers the students an opportunity to synthesize and evaluate information from various disciplines and thus enhance the study of a specific profession.” In 1991 significant curricular revisions were made to the General Education Program including the introduction of the Humanities Base and Thematic …

Fighting The Black Snake: The Dapl And The Case For Indigenous Environmental Stewardship, Kenny Moll
Student Theses 2015-Present
This thesis analyzes the current scope of environmental injustice on Native lands in the U.S. Specifically it examines The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) and its impacts on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of North Dakota. Western colonialism and capitalism have dominated North American ecosystems since their forcible introduction hundreds of years ago, causing the commodification of natural resources and leading to injustices such as that of the “Black Snake.” However, the story of The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s resistance will be analyzed through the framework of Indigenous philosophy and environmental justice. Chapter 1 analyzes the implementation of the DAPL and …

Adaptation Processes In Cross - Cultural Communication Within Chinese - Indonesian Workplace Settings: An Analysis Of The Tiktok Series "Day 1 Kerja Sama Orang China. ", Shi Jie, Amelia Burhan
International Review of Humanities Studies
In the background ofChina's deepening economic engagement with Indonesia under the Belt and Road Initiative, increasing numbers of Chinese workers have entered Indonesian industrial zones, creating a workplace environment characterized by intensive cross-cultural interaction. While previous studies on cross-cultural adaptation have primarily emphasized macro-level cultural barriers and language difficulties, this research shifts attention to the micro-level communicative practices through which cultural adaptation is negotiated in everyday collaboration. Drawing on Howard Giles' Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), this study conducts a qualitative analysis of TikTok videos depicting workplace interactions between Chinese and Indonesian workers particularly those labeled "Day 1 kerja sama orang …

Right-Wing French Media Coverage Of The Rassemblement National’S 2027 Presidential Candidates, Amelinda Sundari, Myrna Laksman-Huntley
International Review of Humanities Studies
The 2027 French presidential election has become a contest over political legitimacy, and the media play a key role in shaping candidates’ images. Within the right-wing camp, Rassemblement National (RN) presents two potential figures, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella. Le Pen faces legal threats that could prevent her candidacy, while Bardella is projected as a successor to represent RN in the contest. Drawing on framing theory Pan & Kosicki (1993) and Critical Discourse Analysis Fairclough (1995), this qualitative study investigates right-wing French media preferences between these two candidates. The analysis examines three articles each from Le Figaro and Le …

Sahel Region In French Postcolonial Discourse: Macron's Production Of Space And Security Rhetoric, Azzahrah F. A Putri, Abellia Anggi Wardani Dr.
International Review of Humanities Studies
Between the Sahara Desert and the Sudanese Savannah, the Sahel region has become a contested geopolitical space. This study analyses how France is reconstructing its hegemony following its military withdrawal through the rhetoric of Emmanuel Macron (2021 and 2025). Using Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1995) and the theory of spatial production (Lefebvre, 1974), this study examines how the discourses of “partnership” and “security” are employed to maintain French influence. Qualitative methods were applied to Macron's speeches, French media, and statements by former presidents of Sahel countries. The results show that France is redefining the Sahel as a ‘crisis zone’ requiring …

The Mediating Role Of Trust: How Cultural Factors Shape Consumer Acceptance Of Chinese Electric Vehicles In Jakarta, Indonesia, Suci Kuswardani, Ike Iswary Lawanda
International Review of Humanities Studies
This study examines the mediating role of consumer trust in the relationship between cultural factors and the purchase intention of Chinese Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Jakarta, Indonesia. While global EV adoption is often analyzed through techno-economic lenses, this research addresses a critical gap by investigating the under-explored socio-cultural dimensions that shape consumer behavior in emerging markets. Framed by an integrated theoretical approach combining Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Reception Theory, the study explores how local cultural values such as collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, and social status filter the acceptance of Chinese EV technology. A qualitative case study …
