Identification of specific risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) versus depression after trauma has been challenging, in part due to the high comorbidity of these disorders. As exposure to trauma triggers activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis, examining atypical stress responses via HPA-axis hormones, namely cortisol, may help in the delineation of these disorders. Indeed, extant research demonstrates that, following stress, individuals with chronic PTSD exhibit hypocortisolism (e.g., lower cortisol response than controls), while those with chronic depression exhibit hypercortisolism (e.g., higher response than controls). Less is known about the role of cortisol and these seemingly disparate profiles immediately following …

Background
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with markers of accelerated aging. Estimates of brain age, compared to chronological age, may clarify the effects of PTSD on the brain and may inform treatment approaches targeting the neurobiology of aging in the context of PTSD.
Method
Adult subjects (N = 2229; 56.2% male) aged 18–69 years (mean = 35.6, SD = 11.0) from 21 ENIGMA-PGC PTSD sites underwent T1-weighted brain structural magnetic resonance imaging, and PTSD assessment (PTSD+, n = 884). Previously trained voxel-wise (brainageR) and region-of-interest (BARACUS and PHOTON) machine learning pipelines were compared in a subset of control …

Deep Learning-Based Surrogate Models For Post-Earthquake Damage Assessment, Xinzhe Yuan
Deep Learning-Based Surrogate Models For Post-Earthquake Damage Assessment, Xinzhe Yuan
Doctoral Dissertations
"Seismic damage assessment is a critical step to enhance community resilience in the wake of an earthquake. This study aims to develop deep learning-based surrogate models for widely used fragility curves to achieve more accurate and rapid assessment in practice. These surrogate models are based on artificial neural networks trained from the labelled ground motions whose resulting damage classes on targeted structures are determined by nonlinear time history analyses. The development of various surrogate models is progressed in four phases. In Phase I, the multilayer perceptron (MLP) is used to develop multivariate seismic classifiers with up to 50 hand-crafted intensity …
Effects Of Vacancies And Electron Temperature On The Electron Phonon Coupling In Cubic Silicon Carbide And Their Connection To The Inelastic Thermal Spike, Salah Al-Smairat
Effects Of Vacancies And Electron Temperature On The Electron Phonon Coupling In Cubic Silicon Carbide And Their Connection To The Inelastic Thermal Spike, Salah Al-Smairat
Doctoral Dissertations
“The electron-phonon interaction is an important interaction in many solids as it influences transport phenomena and related quantities such as the electrical and thermal conductivities, especially in nuclear and space applications. The importance of the electron-phonon interaction in primary damage production in 3C-SiC is the subject of this research.
The electron-phonon coupling factor was calculated using a hybrid Density Functional Perturbation Theory - Classical Electron Gas model. The coupling factor was calculated as a function of electron temperature in pristine and defective 3C-SiC, and relaxed defective cells. The electron-phonon coupling is found to depend strongly on the electronic temperature and …
Characterizing And Modeling Methods For Power Converters, Anfeng Huang
Characterizing And Modeling Methods For Power Converters, Anfeng Huang
Doctoral Dissertations
“Stable power delivery is becoming increasingly important in modern electronic devices, especially in applications with stringent requirements of its form factor. With the evolution of technology, the switching frequency in a power converter is pushed to a higher frequency range, e.g., several MHz or even higher, to decrease its size. However, the loss generated in the converter increases drastically due to the high switching frequency. In addition, a wide-band feedback controller is required to accommodate the high switching frequency in the converter. We focus on the characterization or modeling of the feedback control circuits and critical components in a switching …

Evaluation Of Recrosslinkable Preformed Particle Gel (Rppg) As A Fluid Loss Control Material During Drilling Operations, Mohamed Saad M. Ahdaya
Doctoral Dissertations
"One of the most intense, expensive, and time-consuming problems during drilling operations is the loss of circulation, which could result in several consequences, including wellbore collapse, fluid inflow, formation damage, environmental issues, and nonproductive time. This research aims to evaluate novel materials that can mitigate lost circulation and overcome the limitation of other materials. In this research, a comprehensive evaluation of a re-crosslinkable preformed particle gel (RPPG) has been conducted to determine the extent to which it can be used to control drilling fluid losses during drilling operations. The RPPG consists of swellable gel particles that can self-crosslink to form …

Determining Thermal Properties Via Parameter Estimation Of A One-Dimensional, Analytical Model, Lauren B. Tomanek
Determining Thermal Properties Via Parameter Estimation Of A One-Dimensional, Analytical Model, Lauren B. Tomanek
Doctoral Dissertations
“In thermal applications, thermal conductivity is used to predict how well a material conducts heat. The accuracy of the magnitude of the thermal conductivity becomes increasingly essential to optimize part geometry. Thermal conductivity can vary significantly from the nominal value due to post-processing. The ASTM standards available to measure thermal conductivity are challenging to reproduce because of the insulated and prescribed temperature boundary conditions that are needed. The research introduces two new methods for estimating thermal conductivity that deliver the same accuracy as the existing ASTM standards and are easier to implement. The methods account for losses in the heating …

Bulk Nanostructured Steels For Nuclear Reactor And Extreme Environment Applications, Maalavan Arivu
Doctoral Dissertations
"Candidate accident tolerant FeCrAl fuel (ATF) claddings for light water reactors (LWRs) need to be thinner than current Zircaloys owing to higher neutronic penalty, demanding an improvement in strength. Therefore, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), and high-pressure torsion (HPT) were used to produce bulk ultra-fine grained and nanocrystalline Kanthal-D [KD; Fe-21Cr-5Al-0.026C (wt.%) alloy] which resulted in an improvement in strength of up to 3 times their nominal strength from grain boundary strengthening, and dislocation strengthening. Dynamic recovery was promoted due to ECAP at 520 oC rendering it with a large area fraction of less mobile low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) …

Development Of An Interactive Robot For Overground Physical Human-Robot Interaction, Sambad Regmi
Doctoral Dissertations
"The overground interactive robots are potentially beneficial for humans in various areas, such as overground rehabilitation therapies and robotic interactive assistance. However, it is unclear what the expectations and challenges are for a robot to be physically interactive with a human during overground tasks, such as a robot helping an older adult walk. To develop such a robot, one must first build a clear understanding of how the human motor intent is communicated when interacting with another agent. Specifically, how do humans understand the leader’s intention when being led?
Based on previous works, we hypothesized that humans modulate their arm …

Molten Steel Interactions With Tundish Linings And Refractory Glazes, Tyler Michael Richards
Molten Steel Interactions With Tundish Linings And Refractory Glazes, Tyler Michael Richards
Doctoral Dissertations
"In the final stages of casting, molten steel is in contact with two main types of refractories: the working lining of the tundish used to serve as an intermediate vessel between the ladle and copper mold, and the various glazed carbon-bearing refractories used to control the flow of steel from the ladle to the tundish and from the tundish to the mold. If steel interacts with these refractories in such a way as to result in the formation of inclusions, it may be too late to remove them, leading to degradation of the steel’s mechanical properties. Understanding these interactions and …

Oxidative cleaning agents such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) used in water and wastewater treatment play an important role in the degradation and rapid aging of the polymeric membranes. In addition, when the temperature is above the maximum operating range of the membrane, it negatively affects the membrane performance. H2O2, which is also known as a green and environmentally friendly strong oxidant because of releasing only water as a by-product, can provide good cleaning efficiency under temperature, but its influence on membrane aging is not fully understood. Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the present study, ethanolic extract of Clerodendrum serratum roots was investigated for its potential to reverse some features of bronchial asthma in ovalbumin-induced murine model of asthma. Clerodendrum serratum commonly called bharangi, (family Solanaceae) is a well-known anti-allergic drug in Asian folk system of medicines. In the present work, pharmacological studies are done to provide scientific evidence for therapeutic potential of plant in allergic asthma. Asthma was induced in experimental rats with allergen suspension of ovalbumin and aluminum hydroxide followed by treatment with dexamethasone (2.5 mg/kg, po) or C. serratum root extract (0.53 and 5.3 mg/kg, b. w., po). …

In order to improve the efficiency of the alkylation reaction to aromatic hydrocarbons and propylene, different types of catalysts were screened, including ultra-stable Y molecular sieves (USY), solid phosphoric acid (SPA), ZSM type molecular sieve (HZSM), etc. The effects of reaction temperature, catalyst loading, and reaction time on the conversion rate of aromatic hydrocarbons and the selectivity of target products were investigated using the high-pressure reaction device. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, and other methods. The experimental results show that the USY catalyst exhibits higher catalytic activity for alkylation. This catalyst can be used for …
