Discussions is a new feature of GitHub for asking questions or discussing topics outside of specific Issues or Pull Requests. Before being available to all projects in December 2020, it had been tested on selected open source software projects. To understand how developers use this novel feature, how they perceive it, and how it impacts the development processes, we conducted a mixed-methods study based on early adopters of GitHub discussions from January until July 2020. We found that: (1) errors, unexpected behavior, and code reviews are prevalent discussion categories; (2) there is a positive relationship between project member involvement and …

Traceability between published scientific breakthroughs and their implementation is essential, especially in the case of open-source scientific software which implements bleeding-edge science in its code. However, aligning the link between GitHub repositories and academic papers can prove difficult, and the current practice of establishing and maintaining such links remains unknown. This paper investigates the role of academic paper references contained in these repositories. We conduct a large-scale study of 20 thousand GitHub repositories that make references to academic papers. We use a mixed-methods approach to identify public access, traceability and evolutionary aspects of the links. Although referencing a paper is …

Interest Points Analysis For Internet Forum Based On Long-Short Windows Similarity, Xinghai Ju, Jicang Lu, Xiangyang Luo, Gang Zhou, Shiyu Wang, Shunhang Li, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For Internet forum Points of Interest (PoI), existing analysis methods are usually lack of usability analysis under different conditions and ignore the long-term variation, which lead to blindness in method selection. To address this problem, this paper proposed a PoI variation prediction framework based on similarity analysis between long and short windows. Based on the framework, this paper presented 5 PoI analysis algorithms which can be categorized into 2 types, i.e., the traditional sequence analysis methods such as autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA), support vector regressor (SVR), and the deep learning methods such as convolutional neural network (CNN), long-short …

Cross-Modal Food Retrieval: Learning A Joint Embedding Of Food Images And Recipes With Semantic Consistency And Attention Mechanism, Hao Wang, Doyen Sahoo, Chenghao Liu, Ke Shu, Palakorn Achananuparp, Ee-Peng Lim, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Food retrieval is an important task to perform analysis of food-related information, where we are interested in retrieving relevant information about the queried food item such as ingredients, cooking instructions, etc. In this paper, we investigate cross-modal retrieval between food images and cooking recipes. The goal is to learn an embedding of images and recipes in a common feature space, such that the corresponding image-recipe embeddings lie close to one another. Two major challenges in addressing this problem are 1) large intra-variance and small inter-variance across cross-modal food data; and 2) difficulties in obtaining discriminative recipe representations. To address these …

Behavioral Differences In Urban Sciurus Carolinensis With Varying Human Exposure As A Model For Synanthropic Human-Animal Relationships, Tiffany M. Jordan

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Synanthropic animals are considered a halfway point between wild and domestic animals that live in urban environments and depend on humans for their survival. Sciurus carolinensis, the eastern gray squirrel, symbolizes a distinctive coexistence between human and wildlife as they are commonly fed in parks and gardens. They are native to the eastern United States. Where they are invasive, they are found only in urban areas and not in rural or wildlife areas. This study examined how different levels of human exposure impact the behavior of S. carolinensis in its non-native range from two different perspectives by using flight initiation …

Cross-Group Friendships And Skin Tone Perceptions, Jhenifa Parker Jan 2022

Cross-Group Friendships And Skin Tone Perceptions, Jhenifa Parker

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

George Allport (1954) coined the term contact hypothesis to explain the relationship between intragroup friendships/interactions and perceptions toward that group. Allport’s hypothesis had been scrutinized as an intervention for reducing prejudices and biases against groups who collectively experience discrimination. This theory was mainly tested in terms of cross-group friendships between individuals of a different ethnicity, racial group, physical ability, and so on; however, very little research has explored this hypothesis in the context of skin tone perceptions. Colorism has had an historical and pervasive impact on individuals categorized as racial/ethnic minorities. This study attempted to bridge the gaps in research …

Exo-Sir: An Epidemiological Model To Analyze The Impact Of Exogenous Spread Of Infection, Nirmal Kumar Sivaraman, Manas Gaur, Shivansh Baijal, Sakthi Balan Muthiah, Amit Sheth

Publications

Epidemics like Covid-19 and Ebola have impacted people's lives significantly. The impact of mobility of people across the countries or states in the spread of epidemics has been significant. The spread of disease due to factors local to the population under consideration is termed the endogenous spread. The spread due to external factors like migration, mobility, etc. is called the exogenous spread. In this paper, we introduce the Exo-SIR model, an extension of the popular SIR model and a few variants of the model. The novelty in our model is that it captures both the exogenous and endogenous spread of …

Wise Causal Models: Wisdom Infused Semantics Enhanced Causal Models - A Study In Suicidality Diagnosis, Kaushik Roy, Yuxin Zi, Vignesh Narayanan, Manas Gaur, Sanjay Chandrasekar, Amit Sheth Jan 2022

Wise Causal Models: Wisdom Infused Semantics Enhanced Causal Models - A Study In Suicidality Diagnosis, Kaushik Roy, Yuxin Zi, Vignesh Narayanan, Manas Gaur, Sanjay Chandrasekar, Amit Sheth

Publications

The COVID-19 Pandemic has highlighted the gap between the number of mental health care seekers and care providers. Netizens have taken to internet-based platforms such as Reddit to express their experiences. Mental illness diagnosis processes have clinically accepted causal interpretations and semantics. Curiously, mental illness diagnosis accuracy is low relative to similar well-studied illnesses. Motivated by this discrepancy, we propose Wisdom Infused Semantics Enhanced (WISE) causal models, inspired by the wisdom of the crowd idea that learns from a collective agreement among causal models and their semantics for mental illness diagnoses. We use suicidality diagnosis task descriptions, datasets, and baseline …

Dynamic Pricing Algorithms, Consumer Harm, And Regulatory Response, Alexander Mackay, Samuel Weinstein Jan 2022

Dynamic Pricing Algorithms, Consumer Harm, And Regulatory Response, Alexander Mackay, Samuel Weinstein

Articles

Pricing algorithms are rapidly transforming markets, from ride-sharing, to air travel, to online retail. Regulators and scholars have watched this development with a wary eye. Their focus so far has been on the potential for pricing algorithms to facilitate explicit and tacit collusion. This Article argues that the policy challenges pricing algorithms pose are far broader than collusive conduct. It demonstrates that algorithmic pricing can lead to higher prices for consumers in competitive markets and even in the absence of collusion. This consumer harm can be initiated by a single firm employing a superior pricing algorithm. Higher prices arise from …

A noticable shift is underway in today’s multi-generational workforce. As younger employees propel digital workforce transformation and embrace technology adoption in the workplace, organisations need to show they are forward-thinking in their digital transformation strategies, and the emergent integration of social media in organisations is reshaping internal communication strategies, in a bid to improve corporate reputations and foster employee engagement. However, the impact of personal social media use on psychological and behavioural workplace outcomes is still debatebale with contrasting results in the literature identifying both positive and negative effects on workplace outcomes among organisational employees. This study seeks to examine …

The Role Of Appraisal Politics On Appraisal Systems And Employee Silence Within The Public Sector In South Korea, Jin-Woong Yoo Jan 2022

The Role Of Appraisal Politics On Appraisal Systems And Employee Silence Within The Public Sector In South Korea, Jin-Woong Yoo

Plymouth Business School Theses

Purpose: There has been much discussion about employee appraisals within the public sector in South Korea, owing to the lack of accuracy in performance ratings (Ahn & Cho 2018). Despite the awareness that the inaccuracy in performance ratings can be considered to be the result of perceived appraisal politics (Poon 2004; Silva 2018; Dhiman 2020), precious few scholars in South Korea posed the questions respecting the determinants and the effect of perceived appraisal politics within the public sector (Ahn & Cho 2015; Kwon 2020). Hence, this doctoral research is to explore the full mediating role of perceived appraisal politics toward …

Investigating Patient Attitudes Towards Quality Of Service Management In The Public Health Service Sector: Evidence From Saudi Arabia, Aseel Bahareth

Plymouth Business School Theses

Purpose - Healthcare has been recognised as one of the key social responsibilities in any society, and the quality of healthcare available in a country is one of the key recognised standards and indicators for measuring the quality of life and standard of living obtainable in a particular society or country. Several previous studies have also shown that service satisfaction and quality experienced by patients vary from one country to another, while most developing nations fall at the bottom of these satisfaction ladders or rankings due to little (or non-available) research evidence in these areas. Therefore, this study will employ …

Literary Tourism: Linking Cultural Capital, Tourist Experiences And Perceptions Of Authenticity, Zoe Roberts Jan 2022

Literary Tourism: Linking Cultural Capital, Tourist Experiences And Perceptions Of Authenticity, Zoe Roberts

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis aimed to critically synthesise the relationships between cultural capital and perceptions of authenticity in literary tourism experiences. Whilst authenticity is a central theme in literary tourism research, few studies have explored authenticity and Bourdieusian cultural capital concurrently. Thus, this thesis investigates the two concepts and proposes new theory which elicits an in-depth understanding of individual perceptions of authenticity. The study adopted an interpretivist qualitative approach, using an ethnographic research strategy. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in Cornwall, UK. In total, 16 face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with literary tourism stakeholders at selected Cornish locations associated with Winston Graham and …

Going With The Flow: Shifting Face-To-Face Pd To Fully Online In The Era Of Covid-19, Heather Scott, Lacey Huffling

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Immersive professional development is often used to provide teachers first-hand experience in developing placebased curricula. Knowing this, we had carefully crafted such a professional development for our participants to learn how to engage their students in local watershed research and ecology. However, following year one of a two-year grant-funded weeklong summer professional development opportunity for teachers in the Okefenokee Swamp, a shift to online instruction occurred due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions. Although the first summer in the swamp and the successive year of follow-up with teacher participants proved successful, the shift to online asynchronous instruction proved surprisingly successful as …

Are We Dialogical Or Sociomaterial In Our Written Corrective Feedback? A Reflection By Two Academic Writing Instructors, Daron B. Loo, Rowland Anthony Imperial Jan 2022

Are We Dialogical Or Sociomaterial In Our Written Corrective Feedback? A Reflection By Two Academic Writing Instructors, Daron B. Loo, Rowland Anthony Imperial

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Despite the growing movement to embrace sociomaterial approaches to feedback practices (e.g. Gravett, 2020), dialogicity remains the prominent and dominant approach, especially in the teaching of introductory or compulsory writing courses at the tertiary level. To examine this in our own practice, we reflected on and compared our written corrective feedback (WCF) provided to our students. Based on our WCF practices, we contend that feedback practices may range from dialogic to sociomaterial. The former aims to ensure students’ learning of expected academic skills or objectives of a module, while the latter promotes students’ pursuit of content knowledge. These observations are …

Academics are challenged to shift from traditional lecture models to accommodate rising student expectations, digital delivery platforms, and inclusive evidence-based classroom practices. As a solution, co-teaching can add value to undergraduate students’ and faculty’s learning and problem-solving skills. We investigated effective co-teaching practices in higher education and its impact on students’ learning outcomes. We analyzed co-teachers’, teaching assistants’, and students’ interview and focus group data and an external evaluator’s assessment of co-teaching classroom dynamics using thematic analysis; surveys on what co-teachers learned from teaching together; and students’ self-reported learning assessments with co-teaching using descriptive analysis in two undergraduate Introduction to …

The Effects Of A Syllabus On Students’ Perceptions Of The Motivational Climate In A Course, Brett D. Jones, Xiao Zhu Jan 2022

The Effects Of A Syllabus On Students’ Perceptions Of The Motivational Climate In A Course, Brett D. Jones, Xiao Zhu

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A course syllabus can affect students’ perceptions of the motivational climate within a course. Yet, few researchers have conducted experimental studies of students’ perceptions of syllabi in courses in which they were currently enrolled. The purpose of the present studies was to assess the extent to which syllabi language and organization affected students’ motivation-related perceptions in hypothetical and real courses. In Study 1, undergraduate students reported their motivation-related perceptions for hypothetical syllabi statements about the course overview, late submissions, attendance, and use of electronics. Statistically significant differences in perceptions were documented between different types of syllabi statements. Study 2 was …

The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Critical Thinking: Finding A Way Forward With Evidence From A Medical Teaching Context, Althea Jane Gamble Blakey Dr, Clinton Golding Professor, Tim J. Wilkinson Professor Jan 2022

The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Critical Thinking: Finding A Way Forward With Evidence From A Medical Teaching Context, Althea Jane Gamble Blakey Dr, Clinton Golding Professor, Tim J. Wilkinson Professor

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in higher education has a deep- seated concern with developing critical thinking, now a common learning outcome and desired graduate attribute. The prolific inquiry into what critical thinking might be has, however, resulted in a complex literature, with multiple definitions used both explicitly, and implicitly, in practice. Unfortunately, this lack of shared meaning creates barriers for those who need to develop thinking in the classroom. In a year-long action research project, six teacher participants developed a three-part strategy to overcome these barriers in undergraduate small group medical teaching. Iterative thematic data analysis revealed …

Why The Innocent Plead Guilty: Examining The Individual Factors Contributing To False Guilty Pleas, Joseph C. Korevec

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The plea-bargaining system was designed to reduce the time and costs associated with the criminal justice process. Despite the well-meaning intentions behind the process, plea bargaining in practice has resulted in innocent individuals being found guilty and/or imprisoned in the name of procedural expediency. Previous research on plea bargaining has focused primarily on the final plea decision as it relates to economic decision-making and demographic differences between defendants final plea decision. Additional related research on false confessions further attempts to identify extralegal aspects of the process that may influence a persons likelihood to confess. However, no research has attempted to …
