The Macroeconomic Impacts Of Government Debt In Pakistan, Ateeb Akhter Shah Syed, Kaneez Fatima, Junaid Kamal Jan 2022

The Macroeconomic Impacts Of Government Debt In Pakistan, Ateeb Akhter Shah Syed, Kaneez Fatima, Junaid Kamal

Business Review

This paper examines the Ricardian equivalence hypothesis for Pakistan using a vector error-correction model. The sample period extends from June 2002 to January 2020. The results are reported using variance decompositions and impulse response functions. The base model contains six variables and is estimated with 4 lags. We find support for the idea that wealth does not increase as government debt increases; Hence, it proves the fact that economic agents are rational actors and foresee current expansionary actions of the government that result in accumulation of debt as the present value of future taxation that they have to pay and …

Southern Humboldt Indians, Jerry Rohde

Trade & Scholarly Monographs

More than a century after they had spoken, these early day Indians will be heard. All of us who make Humboldt County our home deserve to have access to this information. We deserve to know the many, many names of the tribal groups that were once here and to learn the story of these groups. And we deserve to know the names of the Indian elders who transmitted these names and told these stories, just as we deserve to know the stories about the elders themselves.

This is the 2024 second printing, which includes minor updates.

JADARA

Social networking sites (SNSs) have become increasingly popular in modern society; however, research into the impacts of SNS use on Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) individuals is lacking. Through an online survey completed by 217 D/HH adults, we examined the demographic predictors of SNS use and how frequent SNS use relates to self-esteem. Deaf acculturation, age, attending a mainstream school with support services, and education level were significant predictors of SNS use for D/HH adults. Furthermore, D/HH adults with increased Deaf acculturation and frequent SNS use reported higher self-esteem.

Personal Thermal Comfort Models Using Digital Twins: Preference Prediction With Bim-Extracted Spatial-Temporal Proximity Data From Build2vec, Mahmoud M. Abdelrahman, Adrian Chong, Clayton Miller Jan 2022

Personal Thermal Comfort Models Using Digital Twins: Preference Prediction With Bim-Extracted Spatial-Temporal Proximity Data From Build2vec, Mahmoud M. Abdelrahman, Adrian Chong, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Conventional thermal preference prediction in buildings has limitations due to the difficulty in capturing all environmental and personal factors. New model features can improve the ability of a machine learning model to classify a person’s thermal preference. The spatial context of a building can provide information to models about the windows, walls, heating and cooling sources, air diffusers, and other factors that create micro-environments that influence thermal comfort. Due to spatial heterogeneity, it is impractical to position sensors at a high enough resolution to capture all conditions. This research aims to build upon an existing vector-based spatial model, called Build2Vec, …

Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer

Open Educational Resources

This essay discusses the contrasting attitudes toward ecstatic experience as described in Martin Buber's book Ekstatische Konfessionen (1909). Ingmar Bergman's film Persona (1966), and Jean-Luc Godard's film Weekend (1967). The attitude toward ecstasy depends heavily on the use of language and confidence in language to represent ecstatic experience. Buber, Bergman. and Godard share little, if any, perception on the relation between language, speech, and ecstasy.

Reforming State Bail Reform, Shima Baradaran Baughman Jan 2022

Reforming State Bail Reform, Shima Baradaran Baughman

Faculty Scholarship

We are waist-deep in the third wave of bail reform. Scholars, policy makers, and the public have realized that the short period of detention before trial creates ripple effects on a defendant’s judicial fate and has lasting impacts on our system of mass incarceration. Over 200 proposed bail bills are pending throughout the states. This is not the first period of bail reform in America—two previous waves of bail reform in the 1960s and 1980s have both ended in increased pretrial detention for defendants. Some of the recent efforts in the third wave of bail reform have also increased detention …

"Second-Class" Rhetoric, Ideology, And Doctrinal Change, Eric M. Ruben, Joseph Blocher Jan 2022

"Second-Class" Rhetoric, Ideology, And Doctrinal Change, Eric M. Ruben, Joseph Blocher

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

A common refrain in current constitutional discourse is that lawmakers and judges are systematically disfavoring certain rights. This allegation has been made about the rights to free speech and free exercise of religion, but it is most prominent in debates about the right to keep and bear arms. Such “second-class” treatment, the argument goes, signals that the Supreme Court must intervene aggressively to police the disrespected rights. Past empirical work casts doubt on the descriptive claim that judges and policymakers are disrespecting the Second Amendment, but that simply highlights how little we know about how the second-class argument functions as …

Justice Breyer And Patent Eligibility, David O. Taylor Jan 2022

Justice Breyer And Patent Eligibility, David O. Taylor

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Justice Breyer leaves the Supreme Court having left a significant mark on patent eligibility law. In Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, he eliminated the ability to obtain patents on many useful applications of new (and even breakthrough) discoveries. The author discusses how Justice Breyer’s test for patent eligibility both contradicts the historical approach and has had pernicious impact on the patent system and investment in development of technology, including, and in particular, medical technologies.

New Approaches To Disarming Domestic Abusers, Natalie Nanasi Jan 2022

New Approaches To Disarming Domestic Abusers, Natalie Nanasi

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Laws prohibiting perpetrators of intimate partner violence from possessing firearms have long been on the books. But the failure to enforce them, thus allowing abusers to keep their weapons, has led to deadly consequences. While the criminal justice system has in recent years increased efforts to disarm domestic abusers, they have yielded minimal success.

It should be unsurprising that threatening criminal consequences for illegally possessing firearms has not been an effective strategy. Perpetrators knew they were breaking the law when they assaulted their partners, but did so anyway. And the calculated risk they take by not relinquishing guns often pays …

Extraterritoriality And Conflict Of Laws, Anthony J. Colangelo Jan 2022

Extraterritoriality And Conflict Of Laws, Anthony J. Colangelo

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This Article views the modern federal presumption against the extraterritoriality of U.S. law through the lens of conflict of laws. It argues that the presumption makes many of the same mistakes that conflict methodologies have already made, and sometimes the mistakes are worse. It then proposes a way to harmonize federal extraterritoriality and state choice of law to identify a superior approach to both.

U.S. International Tax Policy And Corporate America, Christopher H. Hanna, Cody A. Wilson Jan 2022

U.S. International Tax Policy And Corporate America, Christopher H. Hanna, Cody A. Wilson

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Given the Republican-controlled House and narrow Democratic majority in the Senate, the Biden Administration has found itself in the perilous situation of needing to raise tax revenue while retaining the support of moderate Democrats. President Biden has proposed raising revenue by bringing the United States closer to a worldwide no deferral system and raising the corporate tax rate from 21 percent to 28 percent. These changes are unlikely to become law. Together, they simply do not have the support of moderate Democrats, Republicans, and, especially, Corporate America.

This Article aims to resolve the Biden Administration’s conundrum by proposing a worldwide …

Power, Primacy, And The Corporate Law Pivot, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew T. Bodie Jan 2022

Power, Primacy, And The Corporate Law Pivot, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew T. Bodie

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

As a Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, Chief Justice, and now a private citizen, Leo Strine has consistently recognized the shape of power relations within corporate law. With his wry wit and sharp prose, he has cut to the quick on issues such as director independence, shareholder rights, and the separation of ownership from ownership. Underlying these decisions are both the recognition of the underlying power dynamics at play and the pursuit of fairness under the law. As the Chief Justice has gone from lawmaker to commentator, his perspective has shifted on the role of corporate law in shaping society. Like him, …

Chemically Tuned Sers Sensors And Signal Processing For Marine Sensing, Robert Chevalier Jan 2022

Chemically Tuned Sers Sensors And Signal Processing For Marine Sensing, Robert Chevalier

Open Access Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation was to explore and develop tools for marine sensing by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The first chapter focuses on the development of a real-time signal processing program to deal with background removal in different spectroscopic techniques such as UV/Vis, SERS and XPS. Background removal by a dual-tree complex wavelet transform with an iterative algorithm (DTCWT-IA) was compared to different background removal methods such as: linear, spline, Tougaard, Shirley, and unspecified proprietary methods from the instrument software companies. Unlike the more conventional methods, DTCWT-IA more resembled the presumed background shape and was generalizable across different spectroscopic …

Impacts Of Hypertension And Thrombosis In A Rat Model Of Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (Rtg-Di), Aleksandra Stanisavljevic

Open Access Dissertations

Hypertension (HTN) and thrombotic events cause vascular compromise and are both related to pathology of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). Both HTN and CAA are cerebral small vessel diseases that cause many of the same pathologies, particularly thrombosis, intracerebral hemorrhage, and stroke. The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate how introducing the common vascular comorbidity HTN (with two differing rat models) or the pharmacological targeting of thrombin by dabigatran etexilate, impacts pathology in the transgenic rTg-DI rat model of CAA to elucidate mechanisms of the disease with and without a comorbidity.

Cross breeding of rTg-DI with Spontaneously Hypertensive Stroke Prone …

Performance-Based Multiscale Tuning Of Inclusion-Modified And 3d Printed Composites For Improved Performance Under Static And Dynamic Loading Conditions, Sami Doner Jan 2022

Performance-Based Multiscale Tuning Of Inclusion-Modified And 3d Printed Composites For Improved Performance Under Static And Dynamic Loading Conditions, Sami Doner

Open Access Dissertations

Over the past decades, composite materials have become an essential part of real-life structures because of their exceptional mechanical performance and significantly low weight to load-carrying capacity ratio compared to metals. However, many composite structures suffer from early failures under various loading conditions. These failures may vary depending on the type of material used and its corresponding material properties such as concrete (brittleness), sandwich composites (delamination and core failure) and polymer composites (lower strength and energy absorption). Over the years, the demand for stronger materials has increased dramatically as the new designs are getting more complex that require better materials …

Hypertension, Rheumatoid Arthritis, And Hypothyroidism In Women Born Preterm Of The Women's Health Initiative, Pamela L. Brewer Jan 2022

Hypertension, Rheumatoid Arthritis, And Hypothyroidism In Women Born Preterm Of The Women's Health Initiative, Pamela L. Brewer

Open Access Dissertations

Advances in perinatal and neonatal management, along with improved healthcare technologies, have increased the long-term survival of individuals who were born preterm. Millions of preterm birth survivors now reach adulthood. Premature birth, defined as birth before 37 weeks gestation, predisposes individuals to adverse health risks later in life. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) theory was used as a framework for this dissertation. The main tenets of the DOHaD theory are that early birth infers immature organ development and when coupled with maternal, neonatal, and environmental stressors, long-term health consequences and/or chronic disease may result. International studies report …
