Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Significance: Visual anticipation is vital for performance in several domains such as driving, military, and high-speed interceptive sports, as it enables performers to handle severe time constraints. There has been little investigation into individual differences of anticipation skill transfer within a domain, which can guide training of anticipation to improve performance.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate individual differences in the transfer of anticipation within a domain, specifically anticipation of the field hockey penalty corner drag-flick across different opponents.

Methods: Eight female Australian international and national field hockey goalkeepers participated. Goalkeepers completed female and male opponent penalty …

The Implications Of A Militarized Police Force In The United States, Nhat Dang Jan 2022

The Implications Of A Militarized Police Force In The United States, Nhat Dang

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The police model in America is slowly changing. From the early days of America, the police were modeled after the London Metropolitan Police. Over time, this has changed from a civilian police model into a more militaristic one. Police militarization in America can be traced to the implementation of the 1033 program, which granted local law enforcement agencies surplus military equipment such as weapons, surveillance gadgets, and armored vehicles. This research paper examines the effects of increasing police militarization on public perception and public trust of police.

The Lasting Impact Of Deinstitutionalization: Policing And The Mental Health Crisis, Ruqayyah Sorathia Jan 2022

The Lasting Impact Of Deinstitutionalization: Policing And The Mental Health Crisis, Ruqayyah Sorathia

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Society is combating the detrimental effects of the deinstitutionalization policy, which transferred the treatment of mentally ill patients from state-run psychiatric hospitals to community-run psychiatric facilities. These patients frequently fall into relapses and are more likely to experience risky encounters with law enforcement officials who have no formal training in dealing with them. The paper analyzes the criminalization of mentally ill people, many with substance abuse and alcohol addictions, receiving treatment in jails and state prisons. Incarcerating people with mental illness, though reducing the homeless population from the street and disturbances faced by the public, still does not address the …

Justice In Hybrid-Democracy: Blood Feuds And Albania Post Communism, Isabella Mahan Jan 2022

Justice In Hybrid-Democracy: Blood Feuds And Albania Post Communism, Isabella Mahan

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

In 1991, Albania shifted from severe communist rule to a regime claiming to be democratic. However, to this day, Albania maintains undemocratic elements. This paper analyzes the impact of hybrid state capacity in the context of state-led justice and the implications for citizen compliance. Albanian culture possesses a deep history of reliance on Kanun and traditional justice in conjunction with the state's inconsistency and unreliability. It further establishes the disconnect between people and the state. Despite attempts to progress towards modernity, traditions of blood feuds reemerged with the movement away from communism. The failure to properly transition from authoritarianism to …

Analysis Of Java's Common Vulnerabilities And Exposures In Github's Open-Source Projects, Semiu Akanmu Jan 2022

Analysis Of Java's Common Vulnerabilities And Exposures In Github's Open-Source Projects, Semiu Akanmu

Computer Science

Java developers rely on code reusability because of its time and effort reduction advantage. However, they are exposed to vulnerabilities in publicly available open-source software (OSS) projects. This study employed a multi-stage research approach to investigate the extent to which open-source Java projects are secured. The research process includes text analysis of Java’s Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) descriptions and static code analysis using GitHub’s CodeQL. This study found (a) cross-site scripting, (b) buffer overflow (though analyzed as array index out of bounds), (c) data deserialization, (d) input non-validation for an untrusted object, and (e) validation method bypass as the …

Comparison Of Non-Learned And Learned Molecule Representations For Catalyst Discovery, Qianqian Yao Jan 2022

Comparison Of Non-Learned And Learned Molecule Representations For Catalyst Discovery, Qianqian Yao

Computer Science

Catalyst discovery is one very important task in storing renewable energy to address climate change and energy scarcity globally. Catalyst candidates can be represented by molecular descriptors and also can be modeled by graphs. Properties of catalyst candidates can be calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT). Machine learning algorithms are applied to predict properties of catalyst candidates because DFT is computationally expensive. However, machine learning algorithms cannot operate over some standard molecular formats. Therefore, to represent molecules in the format that is required by machine learning algorithms is the primary task to tackle. Thus, this paper compared non-learned and learned …

Contributing Factors Promoting Success For Females In Computing: A Comparative Study, Bethlehem Gronneberg Jan 2022

Contributing Factors Promoting Success For Females In Computing: A Comparative Study, Bethlehem Gronneberg

Computer Science

Despite the growing global demand for Computer Science (CS) professionals, their high earning potential, and diversified career paths (U.S. BLS 2021, UNESCO 2017), a critical gap exists between enrollment and graduation rates among female students in computing fields across the world (Raigoza 2017, Hailu 2018, UNESCO 2017, Bennedsen and Caspersen 2007). The largest dropout point occurs during the first two years of their CS studies (Giannakos, et al., 2017). The purpose of this parallelly convergent mixed-methods research was to comparatively investigate, describe and analyze factors correlated to the experiences and perceptions of female undergraduates as it relates to their persistence …

Sentiment Analysis Of Covid-19 Vaccination Impact On Twitter Tweets Using Nlp Supervised Learning And Rnn Classification Comparison, Tanvir Ahmed Jan 2022

Sentiment Analysis Of Covid-19 Vaccination Impact On Twitter Tweets Using Nlp Supervised Learning And Rnn Classification Comparison, Tanvir Ahmed

Computer Science

Twitter provides a platform for exchanging information and opinions on global concerns like the COVID-19 epidemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we used a collection of around 16,180 tweets to derive inferences regarding public views toward the vaccine impact once immunizations became widely available to the community. We use natural language processing and sentiment analysis techniques to uncover information regarding the public's perception of the COVID-19 vaccine. Our findings demonstrate that people are more pleased about taking COVID-19 shots than they are about some of the vaccines' side effects. We also look at people's reactions to COVID-19 safety measures after they …

Software Engineering Methodologies In Developing A Railway Condition Monitoring System, Bhavana Bhardwaj Jan 2022

Software Engineering Methodologies In Developing A Railway Condition Monitoring System, Bhavana Bhardwaj

Computer Science

With the continuous growth of rail track geometry irregularities due to aging, environmental factors, and wheel loads, rail track requires frequent maintenance. Railroads often rely on the precise and correct localization and identification of track irregularities that significantly destroy infrastructure and create life-threatening environments. Therefore, monitoring the conditions of the railroad tracks is vitally essential for ensuring safety, reliability, and cost-efficiency of operations. Consequently, agencies inspect all tracks twice a week per federal track safety regulations. However, their existing methods of track inspection are expensive, slow, require track closure, and pose a high risk to workers. The technical constraints of …

Zero-Trust Architecture And Its Cost-Effectiveness On Network Security, Zillah Adahman Jan 2022

Zero-Trust Architecture And Its Cost-Effectiveness On Network Security, Zillah Adahman

Computer Science

Zero-Trust Architecture (ZTA) is a ‘Never Trust, Always Verify’ concept to improve cybersecurity by eliminating trust and validating network requests continuously. ZTA replaces Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and provides solitary access to applications and data. The growth of ZTA has spiked over the years, but organizations are reluctant to invest in this security approach. Previous studies cover ways to implement ZTA, its significance, and challenges but provide limited information on available tools, prices, and the success rate of ZTA. This research shows the implementation of ZTA causes a reduction of $684K on average in risk impact over four years for …

Multi-Teacher Knowledge Distillation Using Teacher's Domain Expertise, Arafat Bin Hossain Jan 2022

Multi-Teacher Knowledge Distillation Using Teacher's Domain Expertise, Arafat Bin Hossain

Computer Science

Large BERT models cannot be used with low computing power and storage capacity. Knowledge Distillation solves this problem by distilling knowledge into a smaller BERT model while retaining much of the teacher’s accuracy in student. A teacher expert in predicting one class should be chosen, by student, over others for that class - we used the teacher’s domain expertise like this to train the student. We calculated per-class accuracy for the Student and the Teacher and recorded the difference between the student from the teacher for all k classes. With k differences, we calculated the median of the differences to …

Understanding The Patterns Of Microservice Intercommunication From A Developer Perspective, Anas Nadeem Jan 2022

Understanding The Patterns Of Microservice Intercommunication From A Developer Perspective, Anas Nadeem

Computer Science

Microservices Architecture is the modern paradigm for designing software. Based on the divide-and-conquer strategy, microservices architecture organizes the application by furnishing it with a fine-level granularity. Each microservice has a well-defined responsibility and multiple microservices communicate with each other toward a common goal. A momentous decision in designing microservices applications is the choice between orchestration or choreography-based modes as the underlying intercommunication pattern. Choreography entails that microservices work autonomously while orchestration entails that a central coordinator directs the interaction between services. We arbitrate this decision from a developer’s perspective by empirically evaluating the properties of a benchmark system mapped into …

Soil And Soul: Fostering Cultural Healing Through Reconnection To The Land, Makeda Bullock Floyd Jan 2022

Soil And Soul: Fostering Cultural Healing Through Reconnection To The Land, Makeda Bullock Floyd

Pomona Senior Theses

Before the traumatic history of slavery, Black people had a sacred relationship with the land. Now Black farmers are beginning to heal the association of farming with slavery through finding healing in the land. From experiencing cathartic release in the sensation of pulling out weeds, to healing in the reciprocity of caring for one’s own health while caring for the land, to empowerment and community in knowing how to feed oneself in food deserts, Black people are experiencing healing on farms today. Through the development of four essays: Who Cared, Healing Land, Healing Reparations, and Homeland, I engage with this …

Negotiating Social Change: Backstory Behind The Repeal Of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Linell A. Letendre, Hal Abramson

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This Article is about negotiating social change in the largest U.S. institution, the Military and its five Services. Inducing social change in any institution and society is notoriously difficult when change requires overcoming clashing personal values among stakeholders. And, in this negotiation over the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), clashing values over open service by gays and lesbians were central to the conflict. In response to President Obama’s call to repeal DADT, the Secretary of Defense selected a Working Group to undertake studies, surveys and focus groups to inform the debate. During the nine-month process of gathering a …

In other words, he asserted that he was injured because the school district and its “teachers negligently or …

A Call For Constitutionalizing The Affirmative Insanity Defense, Mia C. Larson Jan 2022

A Call For Constitutionalizing The Affirmative Insanity Defense, Mia C. Larson

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This Note sheds light on varied insanity defense formulations which fail to adequately protect the constitutional rights of people deemed legally insane. An emerging trend has arisen whereby states adopt alternative approaches to legal insanity focused solely on the mental state of a criminal offender at the time the offender committed a crime. Rather than operating as an excusal from criminal liability, this alternative approach offers insanity as mitigating evidence to be used at the sentencing phase of trial. The result is that a person deemed not guilty in a state employing the affirmative defense could be deemed guilty in …

Don't Make A Run For It: Illinois V. Wardlow In Light Of Police Shootings And The Nature Of Reasonable Suspicion, Edith Perez Jan 2022

Don't Make A Run For It: Illinois V. Wardlow In Light Of Police Shootings And The Nature Of Reasonable Suspicion, Edith Perez

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

Fear and distrust of law enforcement have been longstanding in the Black community. Those in power have fueled this fear and distrust through brutal beatings, harassment, and general discrimination. The reasonable suspicion standard is problematic because it allows for unchecked biases to guide interactions between police officers and minorities, creating incentives to persecute. But today, a new tool exacerbates this problem and makes escaping the violence nearly impossible, deepening the contempt, and spreading its adverse effects: the media. Using a hierarchy of “if it bleeds it leads,” the capitalistic fear-based media targets the anxieties and biases of Americans, creating a …
