Quantitative Methods For Total Lifecycle Risk Likelihood And Impact Assessment In Sustainable Product Design Decision Making, Christian Enyoghasi Jan 2022

Quantitative Methods For Total Lifecycle Risk Likelihood And Impact Assessment In Sustainable Product Design Decision Making, Christian Enyoghasi

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Sustainable products promise significant economic, environmental, and societal benefits. Numerous methods are available for use during the new product development process to identify alternate product designs that optimize sustainability performance. Once any such design is selected and the product is launched, many uncertainties are likely to affect its performance over the total lifecycle. Such uncertainties give rise to risks that can influence the overall product sustainability performance. However, comprehensive quantitative methods to evaluate the likelihood or the impact of different risks to enable sustainable product design decision making are lacking.

This research aims to address this gap by developing a …

In-Situ Characterization Of Surface Quality In Γ-Tial Aerospace Alloy Machining, David Adeniji

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The functional performance of critical aerospace components such as low-pressure turbine blades is highly dependent on both the material property and machining induced surface integrity. Many resources have been invested in developing novel metallic, ceramic, and composite materials, such as gamma-titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl), capable of improved product and process performance. However, while γ-TiAl is known for its excellent performance in high-temperature operating environments, it lacks the manufacturing science necessary to process them efficiently under manufacturing-specific thermomechanical regimes. Current finish machining efforts have resulted in poor surface integrity of the machined component with defects such as surface cracks, …

A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The main objective of the present work is to demonstrate a method for prediction of aerothermal environments in the engineering design of hypersonic vehicles as an alternative to the current heritage method. Flat plate and stagnation point boundary layer theory require multiple assumptions to establish the current engineering paradigm. Chief among these assumptions is the similarity between mass and heat transfer. Origins of these assumptions are demonstrated and their relationship to conservative engineering design is analyzed, as well as conditions where they possibly break down. An alternative approach for assessing aerothermal environments from the fluid domain is presented, which permits …

In agreement, the analysis of several cohorts of participants exposed to ACEs have shown that women are more susceptible to develop obesity than men. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the link between early life stress and obesity in pre-clinical and clinical settings. Male and female MSEW mice fed 1 week a …

Uncovering The Role Of Apoe4 On Alzheimer’S Disease-Related Neuroinflammation, Courtney Marie Kloske Jan 2022

Uncovering The Role Of Apoe4 On Alzheimer’S Disease-Related Neuroinflammation, Courtney Marie Kloske

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease and is characterized by two hallmark pathologies: amyloid-beta plaques (Ab plaques) and hyperphosphorylated, aggregated tau tangles. These pathologies are typically accompanied by the presence of neuroinflammation which is primarily mediated by microglia. Interestingly, several genetic risk factors that increase the risk of AD also have direct impacts on neuroinflammation. Of interest, Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is the largest genetic risk factor for AD. ApoE has three isoforms- E4 confers an increased risk for AD, E3 is considered the “control” phenotype, and E2 is protective against AD. E4 plays a role in virtually …

Immunoregulatory Receptor Genetics, Expression, And Splicing Studies In Alzheimer’S Disease, Benjamin C. Shaw

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

Microglia are the resident immune cells of the brain, undertaking many critical tissue maintenance functions such as immune surveillance and phagocytosis. Microglial dysfunction has recently been identified as a multi-stage signature of many neurodegenerative diseases, including late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease (LOAD). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in over thirty genes that modulate risk of developing LOAD. In the central nervous system, roughly half of these LOAD-associated genes are primarily expressed in microglia. The proteins encoded by these genes include cell surface receptors that contain either immunomodulatory tyrosine-phosphorylated activating motifs (ITAMs) or inhibitory motifs (ITIMs), including TREM2 …

The Effects Of Cannabidiol On Senior Equine Health, Shelley Turner Jan 2022

The Effects Of Cannabidiol On Senior Equine Health, Shelley Turner

Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science

Cannabis sativa L., has been revealed to produce hundreds of phytocannabinoids, of which cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most desired. It has been revealed that CBD can potentially treat inflammation and act as an analgesic in humans without psychoactive effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Recently, there has been interest in understanding the potential health benefits of CBD for horses. With an increasing senior horse population (< 15 years old), alternatives to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as phenylbutazone, firocoxib, and flunixin meglumine, are desired as these common anti-inflammatory treatments have negative side effects. Because senior horses may have chronic low-grade inflammation, termed inflamm-aging, they are a natural model to investigate the efficacy of CBD on inflammatory responses as well as other health parameters. Given this interest, and due to the lack of research conducted on CBD in the horse, the overall objective of this dissertation work was to conduct both basic and applied research investigating the effects of CBD on equine immune function and health. The first objective was to determine the in vitro effects of CBD as an anti-inflammatory. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from senior horses were cultured in vitro with increasing concentrations of pure CBD dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). These cells were …
