Affirming Care: A Cultural Assimilator For Rural Clinicians Working With Lgbtqia+ Populations, Craig B. Creech

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Although the juggernaut of progress continues to provide minority groups, including members of the LGBTQIA+ population, opportunities to achieve equal representation and protection under the law, numerous challenges remain. Significant prejudicial and discriminatory actions, fortified by heterosexism and heteronormativity, not only threaten this community’s continued advancement, but also poses an existential threat to the physical, emotional, psychological, and social well-being of its members. Therefore, it is imperative that psychological clinicians receive adequate academic and practical skills-based training to thoroughly understand and respond to the unique obstacles faced by LGBTQIA+ clients. This goal, while laudable, is made even more difficult for …

Behavioral Intervention For Eating And Exercise Challenges In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kristen G. Gibson Jan 2022

Behavioral Intervention For Eating And Exercise Challenges In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kristen G. Gibson

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disability characterized by deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors relied on for social interactions, deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of interest and behavior, and sensitivity to certain sensory inputs. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder are at an increased risk for multiple medical health concerns when compared to typically developing individuals, including overweight and obesity. Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern in the U.S. While many efforts have been made to prevent childhood obesity, few have been designed to align with …

Electron Spin Relaxation Of Nitroxide Spin Labels And Relaxation Processes, Thacien Ngendahimana Jan 2022

Electron Spin Relaxation Of Nitroxide Spin Labels And Relaxation Processes, Thacien Ngendahimana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

MTSL is the nitroxide spin label that is most commonly used in site-directed spin labeling. However, due to rotation of its gem-dimethyl groups that average anisotropic interactions, Tm becomes short above about 70 K and this makes DEER experiments difficult at these temperatures. Strategies for decreasing spin echo dephasing and electron spin lattice relaxation rates are important for design of nitroxide spin labels and molecular qubits.

In searching for labels with longer Tm, new nitroxide spin labels devoid of gemdimethyl groups or with more rigid structures were synthesized at the University of Nebraska and pulsed EPR measurements …

The Role Of The Nmda Receptor In Shaping Cortical Activity During Development, Jacob Michael Kayle Lister Jan 2022

The Role Of The Nmda Receptor In Shaping Cortical Activity During Development, Jacob Michael Kayle Lister

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Currently, it is estimated that neuropsychiatric disorders will affect 20-25% of humans in their lifetime. These disorders are a major cause of mortality, suffering, and economic cost to society. Within this broad class, neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and schizophrenia, are estimated to affect 2-5% percent of the world population. Devastatingly, we lack fundamental treatments for NDDs, which have proved some of the most imposing disorders to understand scientifically. The challenge is twofold: first, NDDs affect the most complex aspects of human cognition; second, pathogenesis begins early in neural circuit development, but we lack predictive biomarkers …

Risk Factors For Venous Thromboembolism In Children After Surgery In General & Specific To Orthopaedics, Elbert Johann Mets Jan 2022

Risk Factors For Venous Thromboembolism In Children After Surgery In General & Specific To Orthopaedics, Elbert Johann Mets

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Venous thromboembolism (VTE, including deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) was studied in children undergoing surgery in general, and those specifically undergoing orthopaedic surgery. Due to the low overall incidence of VTE in this population, VTE chemoprophylaxis is not routinely recommended. However, understanding and quantifying risk factors can help define the risk/benefit considerations of these practices.

The study populations were identified from 2012-2016 National Surgical Quality Improvement Project Pediatric (NSQIP-P) database. Patient demographics, comorbidity factors, and 30-day postoperative outcomes were defined. The populations were then dichotomized into those that did and not have VTE diagnosed in the first 30 postoperative …

Influence Of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Regimen On Breast Reconstruction Outcomes, Olamide Olawoyin Jan 2022

Influence Of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Regimen On Breast Reconstruction Outcomes, Olamide Olawoyin

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) provides a survival advantage in breast cancer. Prior to mastectomy, NACT shrinks tumor size and improves pathological response in breast cancer. Evidence to date has evaluated the impact of chemotherapy on autologous breast reconstruction outcomes as a binary variable. In this study, we evaluate the effect of specific NACT regimens and dosage on the rate of post-operative complications after autologous breast reconstruction. We also evaluate the effect of NACT on circulating immune cells that orchestrate wound healing. Methods: Following IRB approval, patients who underwent NACT and microvascular breast reconstruction at Yale New Haven Hospital between 2013 and …

A Nationwide Assessment Of Disparities In Primary Cleft Lip Repair, Connor J. Peck Jan 2022

A Nationwide Assessment Of Disparities In Primary Cleft Lip Repair, Connor J. Peck

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Purpose: This study examined the impact of patient race or ethnicity on the likelihood of experiencing delays to surgery, post-operative surgical complications, or prolonged hospital stays following primary cleft lip (CL) repair. Methods: Patients who underwent CL repair were identified from two large national databases: the Kids Inpatient Database (KID) and the Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database. Primary outcomes were defined as treatment after 6 months of age, the presence of any surgical complication, and a hospital stay greater than 1 day. Chi-squared analyses were performed to compare outcomes across patients of different race/ethnicity, followed by multivariable logistic …

Pre-Operative Urinary Tract Infection And 30-Day Outcomes In Neurosurgery, James Yoon Jan 2022

Pre-Operative Urinary Tract Infection And 30-Day Outcomes In Neurosurgery, James Yoon

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common bacterial infection in the United States, placing significant demands on our healthcare system already constrained by rising costs and limited resources. While patient complications occur in all areas of surgery, the issue around neurosurgical patients deserves special attention as treatment of surgical site infections in neurosurgery is the most expensive among all surgical specialties. Complication rates are also disproportionately higher in patients over 65 years old, which are noteworthy in caring for our aging patient population.

While the adverse effects of a post-operative UTI have been well described in the surgical literature, …

Factors Impacting Trauma-Specific Quality Of Life Following Injury: A Multi-Center Assessment In Lebanon, Ali Elreichouni

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Objective: Injuries account for a large portion of the global burden of disease, representing over 10% of all disability adjusted life years (DALYs). This study analyzes the economic impact of injury for those experiencing moderate-to-severe injury in Beirut, Lebanon. It further examines the impact of different demographic and socioeconomic factors on trauma-specific quality of life 1-2 years following injury.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study following patients 1-2 years after being treated for injury at one of three hospitals in Beirut, Lebanon. Patients interviewed by phone. In addition to questions on financial impact, access to healthcare, and socioeconomic status, …

Wound-Dwelling: Empowerment Through Masochistic Experiences, Nizlyn Jan 2022

Wound-Dwelling: Empowerment Through Masochistic Experiences, Nizlyn

MFA in Visual Arts Theses

The psychoanalytic concept of the Skin Ego Theory describes the skin as a passage for pain and pleasure to travel through. Remnants of external experiences as well as internal struggles affect the penetrable barrier of the somatic wrapping and leave inscriptions on the flesh. Through my work, I have been exploring the skin’s ability to protect, envelope, and inscribe meaning through my papercuts, oil paintings, and clay sculptures. I procure the marks on my body through kink and BDSM, which then influence the work. Though my bruises may fade with time, my skin becomes tougher. By recontextualizing Skin Ego Theory …

Background: For many cardiovascular risk factors there is no lower limit to which further reduction will result in decreased disease risk; this includes values within ranges considered normal for healthy adults. This seems to be true for new emerging metabolic risk factors identified by innovative technological advances. Further, there seems to be ever evolving evidence of differential responses to lifestyle interventions by sex and body compositions in the normal range. In this secondary analysis, we had the opportunity to test these principles for newly identified molecular biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk in a young (21–50 years), normal weight healthy population undergoing …

Vesting, Jed H. Shugerman Jan 2022

Vesting, Jed H. Shugerman

Faculty Scholarship

The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.” The Executive Vesting Clause is one of three originalist pillars for the unitary executive theory, the idea that the President possesses executive powers like removal without congressional limitations (that is, the powers are indefeasible). An underlying assumption is that “vest” connotes a formalist approach to separation of powers rather than a more functional system of Madisonian checks and balances. Assumptions about “vesting” for official powers are likely the result of semantic drift from property rights and ahistoric projections back from the later Marshall Court doctrine …

Bachelor Sketches Invisible Women In Irving’S Domestic Writings, Claudia Stokes Jan 2022

Bachelor Sketches Invisible Women In Irving’S Domestic Writings, Claudia Stokes

English Faculty Research

This essay examines Washington Irving’s domestic writings of the 1820s, and it argues that Irving devised the sketch as the literary genre of bachelorhood. In lavish, detailed sketches of numerous homes, Irving created a literary counterpart of the still life, but the effect of these sketches depended on the excision of women’s domestic labor and the portrayal of the home in a state of static readiness, with all housework already completed. Irving’s tales, however, often depict women’s hidden domestic activities and show the invisible labors that underlie his sketches. These tales, however, portray women’s housework as a source of terror, …

Being The Bigger Ram: Arable Vs Pastoral Masculinities In The Towneley Mactacio Abel, Daisy E. Black Jan 2022

Being The Bigger Ram: Arable Vs Pastoral Masculinities In The Towneley Mactacio Abel, Daisy E. Black

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This article addresses the construction of rural masculine identities through a study of the Towneley manuscript play Mactacio Abel (The Killing of Abel) and the relationships the play stages between human, animal, and land. It argues that the Mactacio Abel places pastoral and arable agricultural labor in competition through the play’s two brothers, and that this competition takes the form of a gendered attack on the masculinity of each. The article begins with Cain’s arable farming and how the character’s antagonistic relationship with the earth hints at his failures as laborer and as a man. It examines Cain’s …

The Isolated As The Revolutionary: How “Leftover” Men In China Challenge Heteronormativity, Ruwen Chang Jan 2022

The Isolated As The Revolutionary: How “Leftover” Men In China Challenge Heteronormativity, Ruwen Chang

Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies

In contemporary China, demographers estimate that 30 million men are single because there are simply not enough women in the Chinese population, and the 2020 Chinese census shows that there are 34.9 million more men than women. These men are called guanggun, which can be directly translated to “bare sticks/branches,” a slur that indicates a lack of marriage and sex. In this project, I demonstrate that guanggun’s singlehood marks them as the marginalized at the intersection of heteronormativity, patriarchy, globalizing capitalism, and pronatalist governmentality. In a highly heteronormative and patrilineal culture, guanggun are branded as abnormal/incomplete. However, because …
