Protection Of Online Gender-Based Violence Victims: A Feminist Legal Analysis, Gisela Violin, Yvonne Kezia Nafi
Protection Of Online Gender-Based Violence Victims: A Feminist Legal Analysis, Gisela Violin, Yvonne Kezia Nafi
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
The complexity of the digital era, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to increasing cases of gender-based violence online (GBVO). However, this issue has not yet received attention in the realm of Indonesian law, especially when it comes to protecting the rights of the victims. This paper aims to see how the current legal framework in Indonesia handles GBVO cases and whether it is sufficient to provide protection for victims. This paper also wants to show that the practice of GBVO is often more detrimental to women through the elaboration of several examples of cases that are widely discussed …

The constitutively active androgen receptor (AR) splice variant, AR-V7, plays an important role in resistance to androgen deprivation therapy in castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Studies seeking to determine whether AR-V7 is a partial mimic of the AR, or also has unique activities, and whether the AR-V7 cistrome contains unique binding sites have yielded conflicting results. One limitation in many studies has been the low level of AR variant compared to AR. Here, LNCaP and VCaP cell lines in which AR-V7 expression can be induced to match the level of AR, were used to compare the activities of AR and …

Makara Journal of Science
Gellan gum (GG) has gained considerable attention in the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries due to its functional characteristics. It has versatile properties, such as water solubility, easy bio-fabrication, good film/hydrogel-formation, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. These properties render GG a promising material in biomedical applications, specifically in the development of wound dressing materials. In this review, the use of GG biopolymer as a wound dressing material was discussed. Various fillers, such as titanium dioxides, clay, drug, and honey, have been incorporated in GG to produce film, hydrogel, or scaffold materials. The effects of filler on the mechanical performance, physical properties, antibacterial …

Evaluation Of Nitrite Concentration In Edible Bird’S Nest (White, Yellow, Orange, And Red Blood), Siti Gusti Ningrum, Bagus Uda Palgunad, Rochiman Sasmita
Makara Journal of Science
The color of edible bird’s nest is associated with its nitrite concentration, but this relationship remains inconclusive. This investigation aimed to evaluate the nitrite content in edible bird’s nest of four different colors: white, yellow, orange, and red blood. Fifty-eight edible bird’s nest samples were obtained from five swiftlet farmhouses in Borneo Island, Indonesia and analyzed for nitrite content using Genesys 30 visible spectrophotometer. Results showed that the dark-colored edible bird’s nests (yellow, orange, and red blood) had higher nitrite concentrations of 304, 317, and 309 ppm, respectively, compared with the white-colored one (15 ppm). Therefore, the color of edible …

The Extent Of The Practice Of Iraqi Banks To Manage Profits Using The (Llp It) Model And Its Reflection On The Tax Base, A Case Study Of A Sample Of Iraqi Private Banks Listed In The Iraqi Stock Exchange, Haider Kathem Nasser, Ghaith Arkan Abdullah, Mohammed Hashim Hammood
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The research aims to identify the extent to which Iraqi private banks practice profit management motivated by reducing the taxable base by increasing the provision for loan losses by relying on the LLP it model, which consists of a main independent variable (net profit before tax) and independent sub-variables (bank size, total debts to total equity, loans granted to total obligations) under the name of the variables governing the banking business. (Colmgrove-Smirnov) was used to test the normal distribution of data for all banks during the period 2017-2020, and then find the correlation between the main independent variable sub and …

Lack of safe and stable housing is a pernicious and growing social concern, and stereotypes about individuals experiencing houselessness are generally quite negative. Little scholarly work has examined housing insecurity and its associated stereotypes in employment contexts. The purpose of the current research was to examine, in the context of the hospitality industry, whether housing status influences hiring managers' perceptions of hireability (Study 1) and customers' evaluations of an organization and its employees (Study 2) using the stereotype content model. Across two experimental studies, we assessed participant attitudes toward individuals experiencing houselessness. In Study 1, we instructed 148 hotel managers …

Correction To: Reconfigurable Circularly Polarized Hemispherical Dra Using Plasmonic Graphene Strips For Mimo Communications, Hadeer Elhemaily
Renewable Electrical Energy Engineering
This paper investigates the radiation characteristics of a Hemispherical- Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) loaded with graphene strips and fed by ridge-gap waveguide (RGW) transmission line for 60 GHz. The RGW unit-cell introduces frequency bandgap from 45 to 92 GHz centered around 60 GHz. A coupling slot loaded with orthogonal oriented cross graphene strips is used to couple energy from RGW line to the hemispherical-DRA. The cross slots are used to control the type of polarization radiated from the hemispherical DRA. Diferent states of linear and circular polarization are achieved according to the biased/un-biased graphene strips. The hemispherical DRA introduces circular …

The End Of The Tributary Relationship Between Vietnam And China In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Nguyen Thi My Hanh
The End Of The Tributary Relationship Between Vietnam And China In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Nguyen Thi My Hanh
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This article explores the final movement and transformation of “traditional” diplomatic activities between Vietnam and China in a unique historical period from 1858 to 1885. In particular, this period begins when French colonialists, a third factor, appeared and concludes when the tributary relationship between Vietnam and China ended in accordance with the Tianjin Treaty signed between France and China. Vietnam tried to maintain peaceful and open relations with China. Concurrently, the Qing Dynasty strived to maintain a relationship with its Vietnamese “vassal.” The Qing Dynasty needed both the political and economic interests of its vassal, especially when its own prestige …

The Effect Of Aging Consumers’ Characteristics On Store Selection And Food Shopping: A Review, Vimal Chandra Verma, Nadine Khair, Norbert Meiners
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The human population is aging faster and faster than in the past. As a result, it can be demographically proven that there will be more people older than 60 worldwide in the next 35 years. According to the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA’s) India Aging Report 2017, the proportion of people over 60 could increase from 8% in 2015 to 19% in 2050. The Indian government in particular states in its report that there will be 340 million people over 60 by 2050, creating new challenges due to specific characteristics and needs. However, this often overlooks the group of older …

The Impact Of Nature Relatedness On Environmental Attitudes Weakens Among Materialistic Individuals: Evidence From The Philippines, John Jamir Benzon R. Aruta, Christine Joy A. Ballada
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Although there exist separate lines of research showing that nature relatedness and materialism independently promote and/or hinder environmentalism, little research has looked at the influence of these two psychological factors on people’s environmental attitudes when examined in concert with each other. This is important because in reality, psychological constructs operate simultaneously and often interactively within a person. The current research investigated the moderating role of materialism on the positive impact of nature relatedness on environmental attitudes in Filipino adults within the context of massive environmental degradation and modernization in the Philippines. Using a cross-sectional online survey, data were collected from …

Moral Right To Healthcare And Covid-19 Challenges, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr., Mark Anthony L. Dacela
Moral Right To Healthcare And Covid-19 Challenges, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr., Mark Anthony L. Dacela
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
One fundamental healthcare issue brought to the fore by the current COVID-19 pandemic concerns the scope and nature of the right to healthcare. Given our increasing need for the usually limited healthcare resources, to what extent can we demand provision of these resources as a matter of right? One philosophical way of handling this issue is to clarify the nature of this right. Using the challenges of COVID-19 in the Philippines as the context of analysis, we argue for the view that regards the right to healthcare as fundamentally moral in kind, which should thereby guide its legal and contractual …

A Comparative Examination Of Disaster Organizations In The Philippines, South Korea, And The United States, Junmo Kim, Seung-Bum Yang, Ador R. Torneo
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The Philippines is highly vulnerable to weather-related and other natural disasters given its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Its disaster organization, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council or NDRRMC, however, has limited capacity, as demonstrated in its handling of natural disasters in the last 20 years. In this paper, we adopt a comparative approach and compare the NDRRMC with the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and South Korea’s Disaster and Safety Management (DSM) in terms of mandate, organizational structure, resources, and technical capacity to identify possible areas requiring reform. We observe that the NDRRMC’s working …

Age, Covid-19, And Mental Health In The Philippines: A Multidimensional Perspective, Hechanova Ma. Regina, Alvin Patrick Valentin, Karlos Pio Alampay
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many to become isolated, increased feelings of loneliness, and given rise to mental health issues. Using the Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping, this study looked at the predictors of mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic across age groups. Results showed that COVID-19 stressors, resilience, nonreactivity, and coping behaviors predicted stress, anxiety, depression, and psychological well-being. Cluster analysis revealed two age clusters—those between 16 and 35 years and those 36 years and above. The younger group reported greater depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and poorer psychological well-being compared to the older group. The younger …

Intergenerational Mobility Of Education In Thailand: Effects Of Parents’ Socioeconomic Status On Children’S Opportunity In Higher Education, Natthani Meemon, Ning J. Zhang, Thomas T. H Wan, Seung Chun Paek
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
As a result of the government investment in education opportunity, there has been a remarkable expansion of higher education over the last 50 years in Thailand. Nevertheless, it still remains questionable whether the expansion is accompanied by ensuring equality of opportunity in higher education. Thus, this study, employing the concept of intergenerational mobility, examined both cross-sectional and long-term effects of parents’ socioeconomic status on children’s opportunity in higher education with the nationwide socioeconomic data of 2005 and 2017. The results indicated that although the higher education opportunity increased by approximately 30% during the 12-years period, parents’ socioeconomic status still played …

A Standardized Diagnostic Pathway For Suspected Appendicitis In Children Reduces Unnecessary Imaging, Roshan J. D'Cruz, Allison F. Linden, Courtney L. Devon, Jillian Savage, Arezoo Zomorrodi, Kirk W. Reichard, Arabinda Choudhary, Loren Berman
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Introduction:
Ultrasound (US) for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis is often nondiagnostic, and additional imaging is required. A standardized approach may reduce unnecessary imaging.
Methods:
We retrospectively analyzed all patients who had imaging for appendicitis in our emergency department in 2017 and evaluated patient characteristics associated with nondiagnostic US. Using these results, we developed a pediatric appendicitis score (PAS)-based imaging pathway and compared imaging trends prepathway and postpathway implementation.
Results:
A total of 971 patients received imaging for suspected appendicitis prepathway in 2017. Female sex, obesity, and low/intermediate PAS were significantly associated with nondiagnostic US, but not magnetic resonance imaging …

Intermediate Anticoagulation Dosing In Covid-19 Icu Patients: Evaluation Comparing Ventilated Vs Non-Ventilated Populations, Christopher Michael D'Amico
Applied Research Projects
Surges of COVID-19 have been seen to place large numbers of patients into the ICU. Establishing standards of care is critical not only for patient care, but to also implement a baseline of therapy to build upon with future research. COVID-19 produces a hypercoagulable state resulting in higher occurrences of clotting such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE). Anticoagulation medications thin the blood to combat this aspect of the disease from occurring but does so at the risk of increasing bleeding potential. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the risk/benefit of anticoagulation usage between ventilated …
