BACKGROUND: Recent data have demonstrated that overall mortality and adverse events are not significantly different for primary repair (PR) and staged repair (SR) approaches to management of neonates with symptomatic tetralogy of Fallot (sTOF). Cost data can be used to compare the relative value (cost for similar outcomes) of these approaches and are a potentially more sensitive measure of morbidity.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare the economic costs associated with PR and SR in neonates with sTOF.
METHODS: Data from a multicenter retrospective cohort study of neonates with sTOF were merged with administrative data to compare total costs and …

Adversarial And Data Poisoning Attacks Against Deep Learning, Jing Lin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Machine translation software, image captioning, grammar check (Grammarly), chatbot, real-time captioning and translation, music genre classification, and document classification are a few examples of deep learning applications that achieve outstanding performance in areas where traditional statistical techniques have difficulty performing classification and/or regression. Google translator has over 100 billion daily users and can translate 109 languages instantly (much faster than a human translator). AlphaGo won Lee Sedol, the eighteen-time world champion. Microsoft Team's living captioning provides accurate real-time captioning as a speaker speaks. Deep learning achieves undoubtedly remarkable performance. However, recent studies on adversarial attacks and data poisoning attacks show …

Associations Between Behaviour Change Techniques And Engagement With Mobile Health Apps: Systematic Review Protocol, Madison Milne-Ives, Sophie Homer, Jackie Andrade, Edward Meinert
Associations Between Behaviour Change Techniques And Engagement With Mobile Health Apps: Systematic Review Protocol, Madison Milne-Ives, Sophie Homer, Jackie Andrade, Edward Meinert
School of Psychology
Background: Digitally enabled care along with an emphasis on self-management of health is steadily growing. Mobile health apps provide a promising means of supporting health behavior change; however, engagement with them is often poor and evidence of their impact on health outcomes is lacking. As engagement is a key prerequisite to health behavior change, it is essential to understand how engagement with mobile health apps and their target health behaviors can be better supported. Although the importance of engagement is emphasized strongly in the literature, the understanding of how different components of engagement are associated with specific techniques that aim …

The Role Of Health Kiosks: Scoping Review, Inocencio Daniel Maramba, Ray Jones, Daniela Austin, Katie Edwards, Edward Meinert, Arunangsu Chatterjee
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background Health kiosks are publicly accessible computing devices that provide access to services, including health information provision, clinical measurement collection, patient self–check-in, telemonitoring, and teleconsultation. Although the increase in internet access and ownership of smart personal devices could make kiosks redundant, recent reports have predicted that the market will continue to grow. Objective We seek to clarify the current and future roles of health kiosks by investigating the settings, roles, and clinical domains in which kiosks are used; whether usability evaluations of health kiosks are being reported, and if so, what methods are being used; and what the barriers and …
Judicial Impartiality In The Judicial Council Act 2019: Challenges And Opportunities, Brian M. Barry Dr
Judicial Impartiality In The Judicial Council Act 2019: Challenges And Opportunities, Brian M. Barry Dr
Articles
The Judicial Council is tasked with promoting and maintaining high standards of judicial conduct. The Judicial Council Act 2019 identifies judicial impartiality as a principle of judicial conduct that Irish judges are required to uphold and exemplify. Despite its ubiquity, judicial impartiality is perhaps under-explained and under-examined.
This article considers the nature and scope of judicial impartiality in contemporary Irish judging. It argues that the Judicial Council ought to take a proactive, multi-faceted approach to promote and maintain judicial impartiality, to address contemporary challenges that the Irish judiciary face including increasingly sophisticated empirical research into judicial performance, the proliferation of …

Dragon fruit is widely grown in Southeast Asia and other tropical or subtropical regions. As a high-value cash crop ideal for exportation, dragon fruit cultivation has boomed during the past decade in southern Vietnam. Light supplementing during the winter months using artificial lighting sources is a widely adopted cultivation technique to boost productivity in the major dragon fruit planting regions of Vietnam. The application of electric lighting at night leads to a significant increase of nighttime light (NTL) observable by satellite sensors. The strong seasonality signal of NTL in dragon fruit cultivation enables identifying dragon fruit plantations using NTL images. …

Ni-based superalloys are largely used in the aerospace industry as critical components for turbine engines due to their excellent mechanical properties and fatigue resistance at high temperatures. A hypothesis to explain this atypical characteristic among metals is the presence of a cross-slip mechanism. Previous work on the role of thermal activation on cubic slip has shown strain accommodation in two sets of slip planes, which resembled the activation of {100} cubic slip systems along of the octahedral slip planes {111} in Ni-based superalloys under high strain and temperature, exhibiting a more homogeneous strain distribution and less strain localization. Following those …
Mass Capacity Analysis Of Stormwater Control Measures Using Synthetic Stormwater With Silica, Organic And Hydrocarbon Constituents, Craig Michael Fairbaugh
Mass Capacity Analysis Of Stormwater Control Measures Using Synthetic Stormwater With Silica, Organic And Hydrocarbon Constituents, Craig Michael Fairbaugh
Dissertations and Theses
Stormwater control measure (SCM) performance is well studied regarding solids removal; however, analysis of mass loading capacity, long-term performance, and maintenance demands are challenging due to the variability and multiple constituents inherent in urban stormwater. This research examines the long-term water quality performance and sediment mass capacity of two common SCMs: high rate biofiltration (HRBF) and conventional bioretention (BRT). Pollutant removal trials were conducted in a laboratory setting per the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) filtration protocol in two phases: the first using inorganic sediment per the NJDEP protocol, the second phase with the addition of organic sediment …

Stronger Microstructural Damage Revealed In Multiple Sclerosis Lesions With Central Vein Sign By Quantitative Gradient Echo Mri, Victoria A Levasseur, Biao Xiang, Amber Salter, Dmitriy A Yablonskiy, Anne H Cross
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions typically form around a central vein that can be visualized with FLAIR* MRI, creating the central vein sign (CVS) which may reflect lesion pathophysiology. Herein we used gradient echo plural contrast imaging (GEPCI) MRI to simultaneously visualize CVS and measure tissue damage in MS lesions. We examined CVS in relation to tissue integrity in white matter (WM) lesions and among MS subtypes.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine if CVS positive lesions were specific to MS subtype, if CVS can be detected consistently among readers using the GEPCI method, and if there were differences in tissue …

Extending Psychological Reactance Theory To Include Denial Of Threat And Media Sharing Intentions As Freedom Restoration Behavior, Noel H. Mcguire, Hannah Ball
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
This study extends psychological reactance theory by examining denial of a public health threat and resistance toward media sharing as two novel types of freedom restoration. Participants (N = 220) were randomly assigned to watch a video advocating COVID-19 guidelines and completed an online survey assessing corresponding perceptions and behavioral intentions. Results of structural equation modeling supported the two-step model of reactance: greater perceived freedom threat was related to greater reactance, which in turn was linked to lower intentions to comply with COVID-19 guidelines, lower intentions to share the video with one’s online social network, and greater denial of COVID-19 …

The Ship As An Extension Of Flag State Territory And An Entity With Human Attributes - Is It Time To Jettison These Legal Fictions?, Gotthard Mark Gauci
Plymouth Business School
This article questions the need for the use of two legal fictions in modern maritime law: that a vessel/ship can in certain instances be treated as an extension of flag state territory; that a vessel/ship is an entity with human attributes. The article addresses the first ‘fiction’ mainly in the context of applicable international law as well as English law; the second ‘fiction’ is addressed mainly in the context of English law although selective reference is made to both primary and secondary legal sources from the United States. The article concludes that the two fictions are only of limited value …

Understanding How Offending Prevalence And Frequency Change With Age In The Cambridge Study In Delinquent Development Using Bayesian Statistical Models, Julian Stander, David P. Farrington, Caroline Lubert
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
ObjectivesTo provide a detailed understanding of how the prevalence and frequency of offending vary with age in the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (CSDD) and to quantify the influence of early childhood risk factors such as high troublesomeness on this variation.MethodsWe develop a statistical model for the prevalence and frequency of offending based on the hurdle model and curves called splines that allow smooth variation with age. We use the Bayesian framework to quantify estimation uncertainty. We also test a model that assumes that frequency is constant across all ages.ResultsFor 346 males from the CSDD for whom the number of …

Despite the success of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for cancer, resistance and relapse are frequent. Combination therapies are expected to enhance response rates and overcome this resistance. Herein, we report that combining PRMT7 inhibition with ICI therapy induces a strong anti-tumor T cell immunity and restrains tumor growth in vivo by increasing immune cell infiltration. PRMT7-deficient B16.F10 melanoma exhibits increased expression of genes in the interferon pathway, antigen presentation, and chemokine signaling. PRMT7 deficiency or inhibition with SGC3027 in B16.F10 melanoma results in reduced DNMT expression, loss of DNA methylation in the regulatory regions of endogenous retroviral elements (ERVs) …

What Should Patients Know About Self Blood Pressure Measurement? A Review Article, Sau-Nga Fu
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Many people measure their blood pressure (BP) outside doctors’ offices with a common goal of concerning their health status. Self-BP monitoring devices are widely accessible as health care products or available in different community institutes. Patients often seek their doctors’ advice on their BP readings in our daily practice. Current international guidelines recommend that correct self-BP measurement with validated devices can enhance patients’ self-management and drug compliance, improving overall BP control. While most of the clinicians were supportive of their patients’ efforts, they were also concerned about the validity and reliability of the out-of-office BP readings. How can we effectively …
