“I Needed To Become A Mother”: Poetic Representations Of Maternal Embodiment, Autonomy, And Birth Trauma, Elizabeth A. Bennett, Lori E. Koelsch

The Qualitative Report

While poetic inquiry has been used to explore many aspects of motherhood, there has been less attention given to pregnant, birthing, and immediately postpartum/fourth trimester embodiment. Here, we utilize poetry to explore a topic that is understudied and embodied experiences in the transition from pregnancy to early motherhood. The poems we present in this article are part of a larger project exploring experiences of embodied transition into motherhood. In the context of this larger project, 14 women were interviewed about their experiences of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. In order to maintain focus on the embodied transition to new motherhood, only …

Insider/Outsider Issues: Reflections On Qualitative Research, Rita Komalasari, Nurhayati Nurhayati, Cecep Mustafa

The Qualitative Report

In this report, we present some of the "outsider/insider" issues involved when carrying out qualitative research with the judiciary, a neglected area within the methodological account. This report highlights the tensions in the research process and interviewing is a former court judge and later doctoral student, then interviewing other court judges. Our position as "outsider/insider" had implications for our ability to understand the terminology, abbreviations, and acronyms used by the participants and the issues raised by them that were specific to the Indonesian court setting. This article contributes to an examination of the ways in which our ethical appraisal navigates …

Computational modeling is an essential component of modern drug discovery. One of its most important applications is to select promising drug candidates for pharmacologically relevant target proteins. Because of continuing advances in structural biology, putative binding sites for small organic molecules are being discovered in numerous proteins linked to various diseases. These valuable data offer new opportunities to build efficient computational models predicting binding molecules for target sites through the application of data mining and machine learning. In particular, deep neural networks are powerful techniques capable of learning from complex data in order to make informed drug binding predictions. In …

Wellbeing Among U.S. Veterans: Results From The 2010 National Survey Of Veterans, Thibault Deneve, Ellis Scott Logan

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Our research focuses on self-rated general health and access to healthcare among veterans. We used data collected by the 2010 National Survey of Veterans, a nationally representative survey of veterans in the U.S. The purpose is to identify and assess aspects of military experiences which could be responsible for differences in veterans’ health and their access to healthcare. Specifically, we investigate how exposure to combat, as well as exposure to specific traumas, can have a lasting impact on the health of veterans. We utilized two nested regression models around our focal variables; a logistic regression model was used to assess …

Teaching And Assessing Active Listening As A Foundational Skill For Lawyers As Leaders, Counselors, Negotiators, And Advocates, Gustafson, Lindsey P., Short, Aric K., Hamilton, Neil W. Mar 2022

Teaching And Assessing Active Listening As A Foundational Skill For Lawyers As Leaders, Counselors, Negotiators, And Advocates, Gustafson, Lindsey P., Short, Aric K., Hamilton, Neil W.

Santa Clara Law Review

Our students will be more effective leaders, counselors, negotiators, and advocates as they deepen their ability to actively listen. As a professional and interpersonal skill linked closely with a lawyer’s success, our students’ ability to listen should demand our attention as legal educators. This attention is worth the effort because studies indicate active listening is not a static ability: we can teach students to be better listeners. But “active listening” is missing from most law schools’ learning outcomes or curricula, or it is only included as an undefined element of effective communication. Consequently, it is a critical lawyering skill that …

Climate Change Adaptation, Migration, And Promising Developments For Pacific Island States, Ashley Jonas Mar 2022

Climate Change Adaptation, Migration, And Promising Developments For Pacific Island States, Ashley Jonas

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The people of the Pacific Islands face an existential crisis due to climate change, despite the fact that they are the least responsible for contributing to carbon emissions. The effects of climate change, namely sea-level rise, pose a verified threat to low-lying islands, infiltrating water supplies, crops, and infrastructure. As a result, there is a need for improved solutions for adapting to the impacts of climate change and for easier access to legal migration pathways when the consequences are insurmountable. Through comparative discourse analysis of scholarly sources, intergovernmental policies, and non-governmental organizations, the thesis finds that Small Island Developing States …

Evaluating Small-Scale Simulation Training With In-Situ Training To Teach Poison Safety Skills To A Child With Autism, Amanda Coppola

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dangerous stimuli such as medication bottles are found every day in a typical household. It is vital to teach children safety skills that will provide them the tools necessary to respond appropriately to these stimuli. This study evaluated the use of small-scale training to teach poison safety skills to children with autism spectrum disorder. One child 4 years-old was taught safety skills using behavior skills training with a miniature model of their home, and dolls to represent an adult and themselves. In situ assessments were conducted in the home of the participant to determine if target behaviors are met when …

Creation Of An Influenza A Virus Neuraminidase Consensus Vaccine In An Adenoviral Vector, Leigh Jahnke

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

In the last decade, the estimated annual burden of the flu includes 12,000-52,000 deaths, 140,000-710,000 hospitalizations, and 9 million – 41 million illnesses (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Disease burden of the flu). Influenza A virus can mutate and infect a variety of different hosts, which results in frequent antigenic changes and even pandemics. This has led to increased attention on the creation of a universal Influenza A vaccine containing broader immunogenic coverage than current vaccines. Our research involved detailing the steps of the cloning process utilizing a consensus neuraminidase antigen. We utilized the pAdEasy Adenoviral Vector …

A Theory Of City Biogeography And The Origin Of Urban Species, Ryan A. Martin Mar 2022

A Theory Of City Biogeography And The Origin Of Urban Species, Ryan A. Martin

Faculty Scholarship

Many of the choices humans make with regard to infrastructure, urban planning and other phenomena have impacts that will last thousands of years. This can readily be seen in modern cities in which contemporary streets run along street grids that were laid out thousands of years prior or even in which ancient viaducts still play a role. However, rarely do evolutionary biologists explicitly consider the future of life likely to be associated with the decisions we are making today. Here, we consider the evolutionary future of species in cities with a focus on the origin of lineages and species. We …
