Design Of Waste Stabilisation Ponds For Municipal Effluent Treatment In Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Nigeria, Francis Ogbozige

Engineering and Technology Journal

The generation of wastewater or effluent is unavoidable as long as humans exist, and it could cause potential danger if not properly managed. One way to manage it is by ensuring proper treatment before discharging into rivers, streams, and creeks. This will not just protect human health but will also protect aquatic fauna and flora. Thus, this research applied scientific and engineering principles to design a waste stabilization pond (WSP) to treat municipal effluent generated in a large military community (Sobi Cantonment), which currently lacks a wastewater treatment plant. The research revealed that the WSP will comprise two anaerobic ponds, …

Manufacturing Of Sustainable Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Using Response Surface Methods, Abbas Mohammed, Maan Hassan, Hussein Al-Quraishi

Engineering and Technology Journal

Quartz powder is used in ultra-high-performance concrete to improve granular packing, but repeated inhalation during manufacture can cause health issues. The mechanical properties of UHPC are influenced by the post-setting curing method. A hypothesis suggests limestone powder could be a viable filler to mitigate these issues under three different curing regimes, replacing quartz powder of similar size. The study assessed 18 mixtures with different w/b ratios for flow characteristics and compressive strength after 7 and 28 days of curing under various conditions. Limestone powder positively impacted compressive strength and had fresh properties. A two-factor interaction model accurately correlated variables and …

Effect Of Structure Height On Seismic Response Of Adjacent Structures Considering Soil-Structure Interaction, Mohammed Abdulaziz, Mohammed Hamood, Mohammed Fattah

Engineering and Technology Journal

Seismic activity has emerged as a mostly attractive issue for researchers and engineers, particularly in light of the recent occurrence of severe earthquakes worldwide, such as those felt in Turkey and Syria. Most entities prone to seismic damage are the structures. Any type of structure consists of a composite system involving structure, foundation, and soil. Previously, numerical and analytical methods for dynamic seismic analysis of structures ignored the impact of this system during earthquakes. In other words, soil-structure interaction (SSI) was ignored. Moreover, another important factor that was not considered is the interaction between structures and soil, or what is …

Solving Westergaard Half-Space Problems Using Potential Theory, Charles Ike Mar 2026

Solving Westergaard Half-Space Problems Using Potential Theory, Charles Ike

Engineering and Technology Journal

The Westergaard half-space problem has been solved using the potential theory in this work. It is a classical theme in elasticity theory that seeks to find the displacements and stresses in the half-space caused by known boundary loads. It has important applications in analyzing stresses and displacement fields in soil due to applied points and distributed loads on the boundary caused by structures placed on the soil. It is governed by stress–strain, strain-displacement, and equilibrium equations. Horizontal inextensibility is assumed in developing the problem, simplifying the displacement formulation to a three-dimensional (3D) Laplace equation. The potential theory is applied to …

The antibiotic impacts of classical drugs against bacteria could be enhanced via the conjugation of silver nanoparticles. After the successful coating of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with Tetracycline, the characterization of the conjugate properties was achieved through measurements with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The SEM analysis shows the appearance of silver nanoparticles with an average particle size of 22.82 nm and a cubic shape. Meanwhile, the EDX spectrum of silver NPs exhibits peaks corresponding to elemental silver. The anti-bacterial activity of pure Tetracycline and tetracycline-AgNP conjugates was examined against ten isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. …

Engineering and Technology Journal

Groundnut shells and sawdust are generated in vast quantities yearly but under-utilized. In developing countries, this situation leads to their disposal by unplanned landfilling, indiscriminate dumping, or open burning as ineffective solid waste management systems persist. Such practices constitute severe environmental problems that need to be urgently tackled. In this work, composite boards were fabricated from groundnut shell particles (GSP) and sawdust particles (SDP) at varying volumetric proportions of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100 % using Topbond as a binding agent. The boards were dried completely and then assessed for water absorption, bulk density, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, …

Two distinct mathematical models, namely the universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) model and the conventional driving force model, were formulated to replicate the intricate transport mechanisms of both organic solvent and water across these membranes. These models were instrumental in projecting the membrane's performance across diverse operational scenarios. The anticipated results were rigorously compared with experimental data to validate the projected outcomes for non-ideal volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-water systems within the membrane. …

Impact Of The Upfc On The Optimal Transmission Switching For Cutting Down Market Power Cost, Sunday Adetona, Makanjuola Adetola, Frank Okafor, Nwabueze Ubakanwa

Engineering and Technology Journal

The exercise of market power by the strategic generating companies (gencos) in the deregulated wholesale electricity market (WEM) should be mitigated, as it results in higher wholesale prices of electricity and a drop in competition in the WEM. Consequently, Optimal Transmission Switching (OTS) has been proposed as a means by which the System Operator in the WEM can use to mitigate it. It is also imperative that the effect of the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) on reducing the cost due to the market power using OTS must be investigated. Therefore, this study used the Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) …

Lora Sensor Node Mounted On Drone For Monitoring Industrial Area Gas Pollution, Muthna Fadhil, Sadik Gharghan, Thamir Saeed

Engineering and Technology Journal

One of the biggest threats to human health is air pollution, which significantly influences people. Due to challenges like industrial and rural locations, where sensing frequently falls short of providing sufficient information about air quality, it is challenging to collect data close to pollution sources. Government-led statically deployed stationary monitors are typically used for air quality monitoring. However, many emissions that contribute to air pollution are erratic and unpredictable. A significant problem for environmental protection will be how to monitor air pollution emissions dynamically and efficiently. It can fulfill two objectives. The first is that if the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle …

Numerical Study Of The Effect Of Thermal Insulation And Window-To-Wall Ratio On Reducing The Thermal Loads Of The Residential Sector In Iraq, Abd Hussein, Ahmed Saleh, Hamdi Ahmed

Engineering and Technology Journal

The climate change that the world is witnessing has cast a greater shadow on the Middle East. Iraq, one of the region's countries, is experiencing harsh thermal conditions. With the increase in population growth in the country, there was a significant development in the housing sector, which exacerbated the thermal loads that the residential sector requires to overcome harsh weather conditions. This leads to increased energy consumption. To reduce this consumption and energy waste, a simulation study was conducted using the TRNSYS program to analyze the thermal behavior of a building whose walls consist of Gypsum, Juss, brick, and mortar, …
