Communication Use In Non-Profit Maternal Health, Marliatou Barry
Communication Use In Non-Profit Maternal Health, Marliatou Barry
Student Theses and Dissertations
The promotion of maternal health centrally involves a communication strategy. Effective communication aids in recognizing current issues, determining potential fixes, and persuading others to take action. Therefore, nowadays it is very difficult to dispute the significance of communication in the healthcare industry. In the early 1980s, the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged communication as one of the add-on strategies to be employed in promoting health as a result of its pivotal role (WHO, 1984).
This thesis project uses a case study method to explore how non-profit organizations use communication strategies to influence various stakeholders about issues of maternal health. First, a …

The Evaluation Of Employee Tax Incentive During Covid-19 Pandemic: A Study On Commerce Industry In Jakarta, Umar Hamzah, Maria R.U.D. Tambunan
BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
The Covid-19 pandemic has had impacts on various aspects of human life, particularly economic activities. In response to this situation, the government issued an income tax incentive policy for employees borne by the government (PPh 21 DTP) to maintain the purchasing power of the community, especially for employees during the pandemic. Until the end of 2020, the realization report of this incentive utilization was still low, reaching only 29.8% of the budget ceiling. This study aims to evaluate the PPh 21 DTP tax incentive policy using Dunn's policy evaluation criteria (2004). Policy evaluation covers aspects of effectiveness, efficiency, sufficiency, fairness, …
Evaluation Of A Place-Based Asthma Reduction Initiative On Asthma-Related Morbidity Among Children In East Harlem And The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Health Care Utilization And Medication Adherence Among Medicaid-Enrolled Children, Sarah C. Walters
Dissertations and Theses
Background: In New York City, asthma continues to be the leading cause of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits among children, and disproportionally burdens Black and Latino children in low-income neighborhoods. Place-based, or geographically targeted, programs offer upstream strategies for addressing public health issues in these underserved neighborhoods, and given their targeted nature, quasi-experimental or other observational methods are needed to rigorously evaluate their impact. This dissertation uses multiple methodological approaches to assess the impact of the East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence (EHACE) – an equity-focused, multi-faceted, place-based asthma mitigation initiative in the East Harlem neighborhood of a New …
Obesity Risk And Comorbidities Among Colombians In New York City And In Colombia, Carlos A. Devia
Obesity Risk And Comorbidities Among Colombians In New York City And In Colombia, Carlos A. Devia
Dissertations and Theses
Introduction: The prevalence of obesity and overweight in adults and children continues to increase worldwide, accounting for the mortality and morbidity from several diseases. Obesity disproportionally impacts Latinos in the United States (U.S.), and despite their diversity in origins, ancestry, and culture, it is still unclear the burden of obesity by specific Latino groups. For example, little information is available about how obesity impacts Colombians in the U.S. (the largest South American population). New evidence also indicates that Latino immigrants may no longer be arriving with healthy weight status to the U.S. because Latin American countries are undergoing epidemiologic and …
Investigating And Mitigating The Harmful Impact Of Precarious Employment On The Health And Well-Being Of New York City Food Workers, Emilia F. Vignola
Investigating And Mitigating The Harmful Impact Of Precarious Employment On The Health And Well-Being Of New York City Food Workers, Emilia F. Vignola
Dissertations and Theses
Much of the United States (US) food chain – from production to processing, wholesale, retail, and services – is characterized by precarious employment, defined as work with little employment security, inadequate income, and limited rights and protections. Studies show that precarious employment is associated with adverse mental and physical health and well-being outcomes. Separate research indicates numerous health issues in certain segments of the food workforce; little scholarly work has explored the contribution of precarious employment as an upstream driver of these health issues. Gaps remain in our understanding of 1) the health needs and status of workers across the …
Women Peace And Security National Action Plan Implementation In Moldova: Lesson Learned And Good Practices, Dr. Natalia Albu
Women Peace And Security National Action Plan Implementation In Moldova: Lesson Learned And Good Practices, Dr. Natalia Albu
Women, Peace, and Security
National Action Plans (NAPs) for implementing UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) are relevant for all countries, not only those experiencing armed conflict. The 1325 framework provides Member states a strategic opportunity to leverage women’s human capital in building effective and inclusive security sector institutions. In keeping with its international commitments, the Republic of Moldova determined the need to develop the first National Action Plan in 2018. The process facilitated the creation of several ministerial action plans addressing institutional barriers to gender mainstreaming. Since the implementation of the first NAP, the security environment in and around the Republic …

Teaching Strategies In The National Security Affairs Program: Sexual Assault And Sexual Harassment, Dr. Mary Raum
Women, Peace, and Security
Most curricula relative to Congress and its interface with the Department of Defense relate to the topics of war, weapons, conflict and budgets. An important subtopic of national security studies are Congressional interventions into the Defense Department related to soft policies which are more nearly categorized as micro sociological issues due to their touching people within the massive security bureaucracy at the individual and personal level. Early congressional interventions among this categorization include concerns about suicide, benefits, health and well-being or the 1940s GI Bill which encouraged personal growth through educational and training benefits in order to decrease a reduction …

A Clinical Practice Review Of Percutaneous Ethanol Injection For Thyroid Nodules: State Of The Art For Benign, Cystic Lesions, Robert D.E. Clark, Xinyi Luo, Peter P. Issa, Ralph P. Tufano, Emad Kandil
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) is a widely used treatment option for cystic and predominantly cystic thyroid nodules. It has several advantages over other treatment modalities. Compared to surgery, PEI is less painful, can be performed in the outpatient setting, and carries less risk of transient or permanent side effects. Compared to other minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), PEI is less expensive and does not require specialized equipment. PEI performs well in the context of cystic nodules. PEI does not perform as well as other techniques in solid nodules, so its use as a primary treatment is limited …

Consensus on a precise definition of social inclusion for people with disabilities remains elusive. This study aims to systematically review the definition of Social Inclusion for People with Disabilities in Governance (SIPDG) based on the related literature and offer basic theoretical insight into what might be considered relevant for establishing a definition of SIPDG. A scoping review was conducted with a qualitative synthesis of literature from SCOPUS. Articles were identified by final keywords of "social inclusion" AND “disability”*. The search produced 8,305 articles, of which 149 articles were included in the scoping review. A coding method was applied in the …
Inequalities In Infant Birthweight By Social Position And Residential Neighborhood Characteristics In New York City, 2012-2018, Christina I. Nieves
Inequalities In Infant Birthweight By Social Position And Residential Neighborhood Characteristics In New York City, 2012-2018, Christina I. Nieves
Dissertations and Theses
BACKGROUND: Birthweight is an important indicator of health for infants, as low birthweight is associated with adverse health outcomes for infants and children. In the United States (U.S.), there are significant birthweight inequities by several maternal characteristics including maternal race/ethnicity, age, education, and nativity status. For example, the prevalence of low birthweight among Black infants is double the prevalence among white infants (14% vs. 6.9%, respectively). These health inequities are caused, in part, by unjust systems, policies, and practices rooted in interlocking systems of oppression, like racism. These systems of oppression affect individuals directly as well as the contexts in …

Collusive Prosecution, Ben A. Mcjunkin, J.J. Prescott
Law & Economics Working Papers
In this Article, we argue that increasingly harsh collateral consequences have surfaced an underappreciated and undertheorized dynamic of criminal plea bargaining. Collateral consequences that mostly or entirely benefit third parties (such as other communities or other states) create an interest asymmetry that prosecutors and defendants can exploit in plea negotiations. In particular, if a prosecutor and a defendant can control the offense of conviction (often through what some term a “fictional plea”), they can work together to evade otherwise applicable collateral consequences, such as deportation or sex-offender registration and notification. Both parties arguably benefit: Prosecutors can leverage collateral consequences to …

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Background Cigarette smoking remains a primary cause of chronic lung diseases. After a steady decline, smoking rates have recently increased especially with the introduction of newer electronic nicotine delivery devices, and it is also emerging that dual- or poly-product usage is on the rise. Additionally, with the introduction of IQOS (a heated tobacco product) globally, its impact on human health needs to be investigated. In this study we tested if dual exposure (cigarette smoke (CS)+IQOS) is detrimental to lung epithelial cells when compared with CS or IQOS exposure alone.
Methods Human airway epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) were exposed to either CS, …

Omicron subvariants continuingly challenge current vaccination strategies. Here, we demonstrate nearly complete escape of the XBB.1.5, CH.1.1, and CA.3.1 variants from neutralizing antibodies stimulated by three doses of mRNA vaccine or by BA.4/5 wave infection, but neutralization is rescued by a BA.5-containing bivalent booster. CH.1.1 and CA.3.1 show strong immune escape from monoclonal antibody S309. Additionally, XBB.1.5, CH.1.1, and CA.3.1 spike proteins exhibit increased fusogenicity and enhanced processing compared with BA.2. Homology modeling reveals the key roles of G252V and F486P in the neutralization resistance of XBB.1.5, with F486P also enhancing receptor binding. Further, K444T/M and L452R in CH.1.1 and …

Optimization Of The Filler-And-Binder Mixing Ratio For Enhanced Mechanical Strength Of Carbon-Carbon Composites, Ji-Hong Kim, Hye-In Hwang, Ji-Sun Im
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
In this paper, a method for optimizing the mixing ratio of filler coke and binder for high-strength carbon-carbon composites is proposed. Particle size distribution, specific surface area, and true density were analyzed to characterize the filler properties. The optimum binder mixing ratio was experimentally determined based on the filler properties. As the filler particle size was decreased, a higher binder mixing ratio was required to enhance the mechanical strength of the composite. When the d

Many factors regulate scar formation, which yields a modified extracellular matrix (ECM). Among ECM components, microfibril-associated proteins have been minimally explored in the context of skin wound repair. Microfibril-associated protein 5 (MFAP5), a small 25 kD serine and threonine rich microfibril-associated protein, influences microfibril function and modulates major extracellular signaling pathways. Though known to be associated with fibrosis and angiogenesis in certain pathologies, MFAP5's role in wound healing is unknown. Using a murine model of skin wound repair, we found that MFAP5 is significantly expressed during the proliferative and remodeling phases of healing. Analysis of existing single-cell RNA-sequencing data from …

Microrna (Mirna) Complexity In Alzheimer’S Disease (Ad), Walter J. Lukiw
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
AD is a complex, progressive, age-related neurodegenerative disorder representing the most common cause of senile dementia and neurological dysfunction in our elderly domestic population. The widely observed heterogeneity of AD is a reflection of the complexity of the AD process itself and the altered molecular-genetic mechanisms operating in the diseased human brain and CNS. One of the key players in this complex regulation of gene expression in human pathological neurobiology are microRNAs (miRNAs) that, through their actions, shape the transcriptome of brain cells that normally associate with very high rates of genetic activity, gene transcription and messenger RNA (mRNA) generation. …

Visions in Leisure and Business
It is important to understand basic ideas or theories behind management/program strategies to be able to fully comprehend how systems work and their impacts. These are the foundational elements that are often overlooked in the development of effective employee/work place strategies. Many times systems are designed based upon operational strategies with little understanding of the underlying concepts. Only when the foundational elements are well understood can one effectively know where and how to apply information effectively.

A publication from 1959 on evaluation of employee services was used as a secondary source and was analyzed to provide information that may be useful to the employee service/workplace service industry. The primary focus of the publication was on the assessment of organizations operation in terms of quality. The primary focus was on the components of program structure as well as the management elements to achieve success in an employee service program. There was a third component that involved communication and marketing because these are the essential elements that are necessary for bringing quality programs to the attention of employees. …
Recommending Answers To Math Questions Using Kl-Divergence And The Approximate Xml Tree Matching Approach, Siqi Gao
Theses and Dissertations
Mathematics is the science and study of quality, structure, space, and change. It seeks out patterns, formulates new conjectures, and establishes the truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. The study of mathematics makes a person better at solving problems. It gives someone skills that (s)he can use across other subjects and apply in many different job roles. In the modern world, builders use mathematics every day to do their work, since construction workers add, subtract, divide, multiply, and work with fractions. It is obvious that mathematics is a major contributor to many areas of study. For …

Amniotic Fluid Embolism Diagnosis & Treatment Pathway, Jeremy May
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Access to care in rural areas can prove difficult for any patient, but especially for the expecting mother. Healthcare providers in these rural settings often lack the staffing and experience to effectively recognize and treat rare obstetric emergencies. Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare medical emergency that requires healthcare providers to rapidly diagnose, monitor, and treat the sequela of resulting symptoms in the obstetric patient. After a literature review, a teaching session was developed and implemented as part of the annual training for 20 nursing staff at a small 50-bed rural hospital in central California. An 8-question pre-test was …
Search For Heavy Resonances And Quantum Black Holes In Eμ, Eτ, And Μτ Final States In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
A search is reported for heavy resonances and quantum black holes decaying into eμ, eτ, and μτ final states in proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018 at √s = 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The eμ, eτ, and μτ invariant mass spectra are reconstructed, and no evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for lepton flavor violating signals. Three benchmark signals are studied: resonant τ sneutrino …

Model species (e.g., granivorous gamebirds, waterfowl, passerines, domesticated rodents) have been used for decades in guideline laboratory tests to generate survival, growth, and reproductive data for prospective ecological risk assessments (ERAs) for birds and mammals, while officially adopted risk assessment schemes for amphibians and reptiles do not exist. There are recognized shortcomings of current in vivo methods as well as uncertainty around the extent to which species with different life histories (e.g., terrestrial amphibians, reptiles, bats) than these commonly used models are protected by existing ERA frameworks.
