Exploring The Path That Has Led To A Fragmented Curriculum, Driven By High Stakes Testing, Sidelining Science, Emily L. Flaherty

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This paper explores the current state of science instruction in classrooms, particularly concerning the fragmented curriculum resulting from high-stakes testing and the subsequent side-lining of science education. The study examines the historical context, starting with the implementation of standardized tests such as MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) in 1998 and the subsequent impact of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. These reforms led to a punitive system for underachieving schools and a narrowing of instructional time for subjects other than math and English Language Arts (ELA). The focus on improving test scores resulted in limited time allocated for …

Greatness Restored: The Development Of An Alternative To Suspension Program, Matthew Jose May 2023

Greatness Restored: The Development Of An Alternative To Suspension Program, Matthew Jose

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

I have been fortunate enough to work with at-risk children within the youth services and education fields for over 20 years now and through this experience I have learned much about the successes and difficulties that these young people face as they navigate life and work their way toward adulthood. An at-risk youth is a child who, because of various life circumstances, is less likely to transition successfully into adulthood. This success could include in the academic realm, job readiness as well as the ability to become financially independent as an adult. In working directly with these students and their …

Introduction: Remdesivir is an antiviral medication that is used in the treatment of severe COVID-19. Research has highlighted the potential cardiac side effects of remdesivir, including the occurrence of remdesivir-associated bradycardia (RAB), but these findings have not been consistent. In addition, very little is known about the clinical implications and outcomes of RAB. The aim of this rapid systematic review is to determine the event rate of developing bradycardia while receiving remdesivir treatment compared with not receiving remdesivir in patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

Methods and analysis: This study follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocol guidelines …

Civilized Elders And Isolated Ancestors: The Multiple Histories Of Contemporary Amazonia, Casey High May 2023

Civilized Elders And Isolated Ancestors: The Multiple Histories Of Contemporary Amazonia, Casey High

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this article I consider the impact of Peter Gow’s writing on indigenous histories as a key area of research on Amazonia. Building on his study of kinship as history on the Bajo Urubamba (1991) he presented a regional perspective on the dynamic social categories by which Amazonian people understand their relations with various “others.” Focusing on indigenous agency and modes of thought, Gow challenged certain lines of historical thinking that dominated anthropology at the time. I explore how his ethnographic approach to history has influenced a generation of regional scholarship, including my own work on memory and social transformation …

“Helpless”: Reflections On Grief And Sociality In Three Amerindian Societies, Giovanna Bacchiddu, Elizabeth Ewart, Courtney Stafford-Walter

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this article, we reflect on one of Peter Gow’s key pieces of work, “Helpless,” tracing how his scholarship has informed and influenced our own work, from our experiences in the field to our approaches to analysis. We explore some of the main themes from this piece of writing, including how intersubjectivity is produced by creating relations of mutual dependence—a precondition for sociality. Helplessness is a characteristic of newborn babies as much as it is of those recently bereaved. In both cases, memories of love and care—in short, kinship—are in question. For babies, kin relations have not yet been produced, …

Desire, Difference, And Productivity: Reflections On “The Perverse Child” And Its Continued Relevance, Christopher Hewlett

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article is concerned with the relationships through which children have been born, raised, and made into Amahuaca people over the past 75 years, and within contemporary Native Communities on the Inuya River since their formation beginning in the 1980s. The process of making children into kin among Amahuaca people is similar to that described throughout much of lowland South America. The production, preparation, and sharing of proper food (manioc, plantains, fish, and game) as well as manioc beer are central aspects of sociality and the formation of specific kinds of bodies. While the processes of sharing substances, demonstrating care, …

The Effect Of Information On Blame Attributed To Four Entities In A Police Shooting, Pauline Meyer May 2023

The Effect Of Information On Blame Attributed To Four Entities In A Police Shooting, Pauline Meyer

Student Theses and Dissertations

Police shootings continue to negatively impact the public perception of police. When it comes to attributing blame in a police shooting, both internal and external factors affect how much blame a person places on the entities involved. One hundred and twenty Arkansas State undergraduate students enrolled in a psychology or criminology course were randomly assigned to one of the three type of information groups: the episodic, thematic-pattern of violence (TPV), or the thematic-police reform (TPR) group, and then read about the Stephon Clark shooting in 2018. Participants attributed blame scores to the four entities involved: Stephon Clark, the police chief, …

Habitat Occupancy And Use For Bat Species Of Concern On The Buffalo National River, James W. Gore May 2023

Habitat Occupancy And Use For Bat Species Of Concern On The Buffalo National River, James W. Gore

Student Theses and Dissertations

Populations of several North American bat species have been in decline for several years. Much of this decline is attributed to white-nose syndrome (WNS). To better understand the effects of WNS by increasing our understanding of the bats’ foraging habits, I used bat calls collected by National Park Service personnel on the Buffalo National River, Arkansas, and estimated the bats’ foraging habitat occupancy and relative use. I determined that 1.) a false-positive occupancy model is valid for occupancy estimation when using multiple acoustic bat-id programs; 2.) as of 2016, the progression of WNS had yet to affect bat occupancy on …

This thesis explores this problem and spotlights certain biased models that are currently utilized in real-world situations. One such example is a highly biased AI …

An Algorithmic Approach To Jazz Guitar Voice-Leading Chord Fingerings, Matthew B. Keating May 2023

An Algorithmic Approach To Jazz Guitar Voice-Leading Chord Fingerings, Matthew B. Keating

Computer Science Senior Theses

A problem in guitar practice is choosing chord voicings that fit together in sequence, a process known as voice leading. In jazz, a guitarist follows voice leading by maintaining stepwise or limited motion for smoother harmony. The main avenues to learn jazz guitar voice leading theory are through a guitar instructor or chord books. To our knowledge, no computational method of generating voice-leading given chord labels exists. First, we demonstrate the complexity of this problem by presenting a graph search algorithm to optimize for a simplified version of voice leading. Then, we present a novel approach to algorithmically derive tablature …

Connecting Linguistic Expressions And Pain Relief Through Transformer Model Construction And Analysis, Sarah M. Chacko

Computer Science Senior Theses

Chronic pain is a widespread problem that significantly impacts quality of life. Overprescription and abuse of pain medication continues to be a major public health issue and can further burden patients due to a fragmented health care system. Previous research has suggested a possible psychological basis to pain and the potential for safer, non-pharmacological alternatives for pain relief. This project leverages language models to study chronic pain development and relief through psychological treatments, which will be assessed through responses to post-treatment interviews. A transformer-based natural language processing model is employed to identify connections between language expressions and pain on a …

Utilizing Natural Language Processing For Automated Clinical Text Review: Identification Of Care Preference Documentation In Patients’ Discharge Summaries, Saksham Arora May 2023

Utilizing Natural Language Processing For Automated Clinical Text Review: Identification Of Care Preference Documentation In Patients’ Discharge Summaries, Saksham Arora

Computer Science Senior Theses

Improving patient-centered care necessitates accurate documentation of care preferences, a crucial aspect often underrepresented in administrative data. Most studies apply care documentation to specific patient populations, rather than more appropriately broad population of `seriously ill' patients. This paper addresses this gap by leveraging transformer-based machine learning models, exhibiting an improvement over traditional keyword-based search methods in identifying care preference documentation.

In order to capture a broad spectrum of seriously ill patients, we matched decedent patients to non-decedent counterparts by utilizing a propensity score matching, accounting for important variables like age, gender, primary diagnoses and commodities. We trained and fine-tuned Bio_ClinicalBERT …

A Computational Study Of Adsorptive Desulfurization In Metal Organic Frameworks, Kyle Concha

Theses

Fossil fuel usage has been related to several concerns about the environment and human health. One of these concerns is related to fuels containing Organic Sulfur Compounds (OSCs) which upon burning produce hazardous compounds such as SO2 which contributes to acid rain and affects respiratory health. Removal of these OSCs is an important field of study as it can prevent the production of SOx compounds. One technique to remove OSCs is Adsorptive Desulfurization (ADS) in which Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates to be used as adsorbents. Two archetypal MOFs, HKUST-1 and Cu3HHTP2, …
