Climate Migration And Displacement: A Case Study Of Puerto Rican Women In Connecticut, Camila Bustos, Bruni Pizarro, Tabitha Sookdeo
Climate Migration And Displacement: A Case Study Of Puerto Rican Women In Connecticut, Camila Bustos, Bruni Pizarro, Tabitha Sookdeo
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The climate crisis is increasingly forcing people to flee their homes, whether internally or across state borders. However, existing international and domestic law does not provide sufficient protection for those forcibly displaced by extreme weather events. In 2021, the Biden administration issued an executive order and subsequently a report on the impact of climate change on migration, which marked a first step in federal policy toward recognition of the nexus between climate change and displacement. At the local level, Connecticut has already become a destination for climate-displaced people. For instance, after Hurricane Maria landed in Puerto Rico in 2017, approximately …

Intelligent Transportation Systems (Its): A Survey Of What It Is, What It Does, Where It Faulters, And Where To Go With It, Niklas Nordstrom
City and Regional Planning
The world of technology continues to find itself incorporated into an ever-expanding number of fields with a rapidly increasing number of applications. One of these is transportation, under the umbrella of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The intention of this application at a macro scale is to increase the surface transport safety, efficiency, and convenience. As technological improvements continue to be made, ITS grows in popularity and implementation, and is now found in many cities across the United States. Correct implementation of ITS could have huge benefits in the transportation sector, but without thinking about its implications now, there is a …
Thermal Inequity And Planning Practices: Uncovering The Linkages And Creating Equitable Mitigation Strategies, Elia Rosner
Thermal Inequity And Planning Practices: Uncovering The Linkages And Creating Equitable Mitigation Strategies, Elia Rosner
City and Regional Planning
This paper examines the ways in which historical planning practices have contributed to the unequal vulnerability of marginalized communities to extreme heat, resulting in thermal inequity. Historical planning practices including discriminatory policies and uneven resource allocation, have intensified the effect of the urban heat island (UHI), leading to increased exposure to extreme heat and its associated health risk. Understanding the correlation between planning practices and the UHI effect is crucial for developing effective strategies to mitigate extreme heat impacts and improve thermal equity. By analyzing the underlying factors and consequences of planning decisions, this research aims to inform policy makers, …

Revisit The Moving Average Technical Trading Rule For The Nasdaq Composite Index, Louie Ren, Peter Ren, Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest
Pennsylvania Economic Review
We check the regression model assumptions via residual analysis using one dummy variable for Buy and Sell Days. Since the returns of the NASDAQ composite index is not stationary, it is inappropriate to use the Student T-test on Buy and Sell Days to analyze the efficiency of the market via moving average technical trading rules. As such, the Buy-Sell Days from the moving average trading rules have no predictability on daily NASDAQ index returns. This refutes the results of at least two studies on the NASDAQ Composite Index.

Women empowerment is a national agenda for Pakistan and, one of its manifestations is the nationwide cash transfer program namely Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). With the help of Bourdieu methodological paradigm of “habitus” this paper analyses empowerment among BISP recipients in their social settings where various social actors such as her husband and wadera of the village dominate her agency but, at the same time, women herself submits her agency to these social actors under the veil of riwaj (social customs). This ethnographic study reveals that the performance of submission among women follows an inner drive for conformation to …

Talanoa Digital Storytelling As A Culturally Appropriate Method In Palliative Care Health Research: An Evaluation Of The Narratives Of Pacific Families Caring For Older Loved Ones At End Of Life, Ofa Dewes, Kylah Williams, Suamalie Naisali
Pacific Studies
Talanoa is a Pacific concept of dialogue and storytelling that was used as a framework for producing our digital stories. This article sets out an evaluation of a workshop-based process for talanoa digital storytelling (DST) where aiga (family) carers created their own short autobiographic films and injected their voices into the social and public health discourse and knowledge production. Five digital stories were created. Participants were drawn from a cohort of 33 aiga carers in a study investigating the end of life circumstances of Pacific Peoples dying in advanced age, and the experiences faced by their aiga who carry out …

Chow Diet In Mouse Aging Studies: Nothing Regular About It., Jennifer Lee, Chloe Purello, Sarah L Booth, Brian Bennett, Christopher D Wiley, Ron Korstanje
Faculty Research 2023
Chow diet is used in the majority of rodent studies and, although assumed to be standardized for dietary source and nutritional contents, it varies widely across commercial formulations. Similarly, current approaches to study aging in rodents involve a single-diet formulation across the lifespan and overlook age-specific nutritional requirements, which may have long-term effects on aging processes. Together, these nutrition-based disparities represent major gaps in geroscience research, affecting the interpretation and reproducibility of the studies. This perspective aims to raise awareness on the importance of rodent diet formulation and proposes that geroscientists include detailed descriptions of all experimental diets and feeding …

"More Than Numbers": Empirical Evidence Of An Innovation Approach To Admissions, Anahid Gharakhanian, Natalie Rodriquez, Elizabeth A. Anderson
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
“I am proof that your LSAT score does not define you; law schools need to understand that every student’s lived experience is unique. Thanks to Southwestern’s admissions process I was able to show that I’m more than the numbers on my application.” This third-year law student was admitted to Southwestern Law School and went on to place in the top twenty percent after her first year following an admissions waitlist interview, based on Southwestern’s first-of-its-kind empirically based approach that utilizes factors beyond the typical numerical indicators—in particular, the Law School Admission Test—that drive admissions decisions and limit access to law …
What We Teach When We Teach Legal Analysis, Susan A. Mcmahon
What We Teach When We Teach Legal Analysis, Susan A. Mcmahon
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Traditional legal education, especially in the first year, leaves students with the impression that law is neutral and objective, and their job, as lawyers, is to read cases, pull out rules, and sift facts into legal categories. This training contributes to a student’s sense that law is natural and normal, and, to quote Robert Gordon, “usually OK and just,” instead of invigorating her imagination as to law’s possibilities and giving her the tools to push for legal change. The traditional approach often leaves students blind to the injustices baked into law and unprepared to become lawyers who create change. Law …
Modern Diploma Privilege: A Path Rather Than A Gate, Catherine Martin Christopher
Modern Diploma Privilege: A Path Rather Than A Gate, Catherine Martin Christopher
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
This Article proposes a modern diploma privilege—a licensure framework that allows state licensure authorities to identify what competencies are expected of first-year attorneys, then partner with law schools to assess those competencies. Freed from the format and timing of a bar exam, schools can assess a broader range of competencies over longer time horizons. This will allow the development of law school curricula aimed at preparing students to assist clients rather than to pass the bar exam. The modern diploma privilege is structured as an ongoing partnership between licensure authorities and schools, which means that changes can be easily made …
Law Students Left Behind: Law Schools' Role In Remedying The Devastating Effects Of Federal Education Policy, Sandra L. Simpson
Law Students Left Behind: Law Schools' Role In Remedying The Devastating Effects Of Federal Education Policy, Sandra L. Simpson
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Due to the unintended consequences of misdirected federal education policy, students come to law school with underdeveloped critical thinking and cognitive adaptability skills. As the products of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and its progeny, students educated in the United States after 2002 excel at memorization and multiple-choice exam strategies but were not afforded the practice needed to fully develop other critical professional attributes. This is problematic as these are the very characteristics law students need to be a successful student and lawyer. Further, legal employers are demanding their new lawyers possess these capabilities upon graduation from law …
Teaching Dissents, Sherri Lee Keene
Teaching Dissents, Sherri Lee Keene
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Judges’ perspectives and attitudes—and even their biases and assumptions—naturally find their way into legal analysis and decision-making. Yet this reality is something that the language of opinions tends to deny. Court opinions are often written to sound authoritative and sure, making legal decisions seem purely logical and channeling a tone of inevitability. The way that opinions are written tends to obscure the human aspects of legal decision-making and mask subjectivity. Indeed, as judges select and interpret facts and draw inferences, a judge’s written analysis often neglects to even acknowledge that this is occurring. In doing so, judges can hide the …
Secoundary Courses Taught By Secondary Faculty: A (Personal) Call To Fully Integrate Skills Faculty And Skills Courses Into The Law School Curriculum Ahead Of The Nextgen Bar Exam, O.J. Salinas
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
This Essay focuses on the disconnect between what law schools say they value and who they value. The Essay highlights how law faculty and administrators often carry a survivorship bias that may prevent them from fully acknowledging or accepting that the law school experience may be challenging and unwelcoming for many students. The Essay also challenges members of the legal academy, particularly those solely in the doctrinal space, to question their superiority bias so that they can better support skills training and treat and value faculty who teach skills courses. This Essay provides commentary on reimagining legal education for a …

Dethroning Langdell, Beth Hirschfelder Wilensky
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
What if we are teaching law entirely wrong? We fill our syllabi with appellate court opinions—even though very little of what most attorneys do involves reading these opinions to learn foundational legal doctrine. We cold call on students—even though most circumstances in which attorneys talk about the law bear no resemblance to the classroom cold call. We give over significant parts of our class time to Socratic dialogue—even though attorney practice mostly involves writing and rewriting a variety of legal documents, collaborating in small groups, negotiating, client counseling, and many other things that Socratic dialogue doesn’t teach, model, or assess. …
Client-Centered Legal Education And Licensing, Deborah Jones Merritt
Client-Centered Legal Education And Licensing, Deborah Jones Merritt
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Clients are central to law practice, yet they play a limited role in both legal education and licensing. This article challenges legal educators and bar examiners to become more client-centered. The article draws upon empirical data demonstrating the importance of client-related, hands-on skills in law practice, and then outlines innovative approaches to licensing that would assess those skills alongside other foundational knowledge and skills. If adopted, these innovative licensing paths would treat aspiring lawyers fairly, encourage law schools to focus more heavily on client-related skills, and protect the public more effectively than written bar exams.

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
“[T]he time seems right to ask ourselves, legal educators and bar examiners, who have different but related roles in the law student to lawyer continuum: how can we best work both independently and in collaboration to ensure that tomorrow’s lawyers are ready to take on the considerable challenges that we face as a society?”

Ready Or Not, Here We Go! Preparing For The Education Specialist Teaching Performance Assessment, Rosalinda J. Larios, Calli Lewis Chiu, Rohanna Ylagan-Nicanor
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
In the state of California, the Education Specialist Teaching Performance Assessment (EdSp TPAs) is the latest accountability measure to be required of aspiring education specialists. Existing literature has been overwhelmingly critical of the TPAs (Dover, 2022; Valdez et al., 2020). And now, in the dawn of the EdSp TPAs, there must be a candid conversation about preparing candidates sufficiently for the TPAs in order to avoid exacerbating the field that is struggling to recruit teachers. This article discusses three significant obstacles in preparing candidates for the assessment: challenges associated with identifying focus students, insufficient preparation among mentor teachers, and program …
Interprofessional Practice Aligns With New California Teacher Performance Expectations For Students With Complex Communication Needs, Kai J. Greene, M.C. Kate Esposito
Interprofessional Practice Aligns With New California Teacher Performance Expectations For Students With Complex Communication Needs, Kai J. Greene, M.C. Kate Esposito
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Educators are bound to encounter students with a broad range of speech-language and communication needs in their respective classrooms. According to federal mandates, current and future teachers are required to implement inclusive practices, which involves providing access to communication for all students. This practitioner-focused article shares an interprofessional practice collaborative project developed between a university teacher preparation program and the speech-language pathology division of a large urban school district. As part of a requisite credential course on language development and early literacy skills, pre-candidate students in the education specialist credential program complete a course assignment led by a school-based speech-language …
Comparative Effects Of Presession And Interspersed Attention On Disruptive Behavior In An Inclusive Elementary Classroom, Kerry Kisinger, Charles L. Wood
Comparative Effects Of Presession And Interspersed Attention On Disruptive Behavior In An Inclusive Elementary Classroom, Kerry Kisinger, Charles L. Wood
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
This study evaluated the comparative effects of presession and interspersed attention on the disruptive behavior of an at-risk student in an inclusive fourth-grade classroom. Data indicated a decrease in disruptive behavior during both presession and interspersed attention conditions with the interspersed condition producing the lower level. Social validity measures also indicated the student was satisfied with the intervention and felt that it had a positive impact on his behavior. Additionally, social validity measures completed by the teacher indicated that while both interventions were reasonable to implement, appropriate for addressing the student’s disruptive behaviors, did not detract from the learning environment, …
Chronic Health Conditions, School Attendance, And Socioeconomic Factors: A Literature Review, Kristin Wikel, Andrew M. Markelz
Chronic Health Conditions, School Attendance, And Socioeconomic Factors: A Literature Review, Kristin Wikel, Andrew M. Markelz
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Students with chronic health conditions experience many challenges, such as increased school absences, that may impact academic success. Additional academic problems exist for students with chronic health conditions who also have socioeconomic status (SES) factors. A systematic literature review as conducted to study the interactions between chronic health conditions, absenteeism, and factors associated with SES. Findings suggest that asthma, the most common chronic health condition in children, is the leading cause of health-related school absences. Findings also suggest that factors associated with SES, such as family income, also impact school attendance for students with chronic health conditions. Although the results …
Exploiting Association Rules Mining To Inform The Use Of Non-Manual Features In Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith
Exploiting Association Rules Mining To Inform The Use Of Non-Manual Features In Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith
Other Resources
In recent years, the use of virtual assistants and voice user interfaces has become a latent part of modern living. Unseen to the user are the various artificial intelligence and natural language processing technologies, the vast datasets, and the linguistic insights that underpin such tools. The technologies supporting them have chiefly targeted widely used spoken languages, leaving sign language users at a disadvantage. One important reason why sign languages are unsupported by such tools is a requirement of the underpinning technologies for a comprehensive description of the language. Sign language processing technologies endeavour to bridge this technology inequality.
Recent approaches …

Development And Control Of Biofilms: Novel Strategies Using Natural Antimicrobials, Sheetal Jha, Sanjeev Anand
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Separation membranes have a wide application in the food industry, for instance, in the clarification/fractionation of milk, the concentration/separation of selected components, and wastewater treatment. They provide a large area for bacteria to attach and colonize. When a product comes into contact with a membrane, it initiates bacterial attachment/colonization and eventually forms biofilms. Several cleaning and sanitation protocols are currently utilized in the industry; however, the heavy fouling of the membrane over a prolonged duration affects the overall cleaning efficiency. In view of this, alternative approaches are being developed. Therefore, the objective of this review is to describe the novel …
Rebraiding Frayed Sweetgrass For Niijaansinaanik: Understanding Canadian Indigenous Child Welfare Issues As International Atrocity Crimes, Alyssa Couchie
Rebraiding Frayed Sweetgrass For Niijaansinaanik: Understanding Canadian Indigenous Child Welfare Issues As International Atrocity Crimes, Alyssa Couchie
Michigan Journal of International Law
The unearthing of the remains of Indigenous children on the sites of former Indian Residential Schools (“IRS”) in Canada has focused greater attention on anti-Indigenous atrocity violence in the country. While such increased attention, combined with recent efforts at redressing associated harms, represents a step forward in terms of recognizing and addressing the harms caused to Indigenous peoples through the settler-colonial process in Canada, this note expresses concern that the dominant framings of anti-Indigenous atrocity violence remain myopically focused on an overly narrow subset of harms and forms of violence, especially those committed at IRSs. It does so by utilizing …
