Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Abstract
Introduction: Pigeon Breeder’s Pneumonitis (PBP) results due to a complex pathophysiology that includes exposure to avian antigens. Susceptibility has been linked to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II, though consensus has not been reached. The goal of this systematic review is to further elucidate the association between PBP and HLA-DR subtypes.
Methods: Databases utilized included PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library. Inclusion required a minimum of three studies in English presenting HLA-DR alleles of PBP and control subgroups. Exclusion was due to insufficient data or non-feasible control groups. Forest plots were created for HLA-DR subtypes’ association …

Safety Patrol: Utilizing Technology To Improve Response Times In Emergency Event Situations, Tracy Caivano, David C. White Jr., Paul B Giralt
Defensive Publications Series
Mass shootings have, tragically, been on the rise in recent years and, heartbreakingly, those incidents can and do take place on school grounds. Techniques are presented herein that support a Safety Patrol facility that accelerates emergency services response times and equips first responders with the critical information that is required to act quickly in an emergency situation. According to the presented techniques, after an emergency event (such as a gunshot, a fire alarm, etc.) is detected, a network may react to the notification of that event by automatically creating a new Wi-Fi service set identifier (SSID) named FirstResponders and generating …

Influence Of Support Attachment Pattern On The Out-Of-Plane Buckling Capacity Of Steel Deck, Divyansh R. Kapoor, Brian Bogh, Kara D. Peterman
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
Diaphragms (Figure 1) serve as a critical component of a building's lateral force resisting system (LFRS), transferring lateral loads from the façade of the structure to the designated vertical lateral force resisting system. Design guidance for profiled steel diaphragm panels can be found in AISI S310 - 20 (AISI 2020) and SDI DDM04 (Luttrell 2015) and are controlled by connection limit states or buckling limit states. Deck connectivity with the underlying frame can either be fully attached (For example 36/7), i.e. connected through the bottom of each flute, or partially attached (for example 36/5 or 36/4) where not all the …
Uniqueness For An Inverse Quantum-Dirac Problem With Given Weyl Function, Martin Bohner, Ayça Çetinkaya
Uniqueness For An Inverse Quantum-Dirac Problem With Given Weyl Function, Martin Bohner, Ayça Çetinkaya
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, we consider a boundary value problem for a q-Dirac equation. We prove orthogonality of the eigenfunctions, realness of the eigenvalues, and we study asymptotic formulas of the eigenfunctions. We show that the eigenfunctions form a complete system, we obtain the expansion formula with respect to the eigenfunctions, and we derive Parseval's equality. We construct the Weyl solution and the Weyl function. We prove a uniqueness theorem for the solution of the inverse problem with respect to the Weyl function.

Urology Articles
Objective: Patients who desire or require surgical management for prostate cancer, but are poor candidates for multi-port robotic surgery, can present a clinical challenge. Use of single port (SP) robotic technology may help overcome these challenges. We present our initial experience with robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) using the da Vinci SP robot for prostate cancer in patients who would otherwise not be good surgical candidates for conventional multi-port transabdominal robotic surgery.
Patients and surgical procedure: Fourteen of 41 patients who underwent SP-RARP from November 2020 to February 2022 for biopsy confirmed, organ-confined prostate adenocarcinoma at a single tertiary care institution …

A Guide For The Everyday Woman Surfer: How Surf Culture's Patriarchy Marginalizes Ocean Lovers, Alexis S. Di Stefano
Women's, Gender and Queer Studies
Humans are naturally drawn to the water by wind and tide. It is a place of solace that we have a desire to know deeply, yet we have kept one another from experiencing it through biases that perpetuate inequality. White-supremacist hegemony has historically kept communities of color from coastlines, women from lineups, and queer communities from participating in surf culture. As more people from all social groups return to the water through surfing in the 20th century, surf culture needs to adapt to become more inclusive. This paper outlines surf culture's historical transition into whiteness and how female beauty standards …
The Effects Of Synovial Fluid And Inflammatory Cells On Orthopaedic Implant Alloys, Lisa Phan
The Effects Of Synovial Fluid And Inflammatory Cells On Orthopaedic Implant Alloys, Lisa Phan
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Introduction. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common surgical procedure used to treat end-stage osteoarthritis. The implants used in TKA typically consist of a Cobalt Chromium Molybdenum (CoCrMo) femoral component and a Titanium Aluminum Vanadium (TiAlV) alloy baseplate. These metal alloys are chosen for their mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, high affinity for bone, and biocompatibility. However, they can be susceptible to mechanical and electrochemical wear, leading to the release of metal ions. Osteoarthritis and inflammation can alter the composition of Synovial Fluid (SF), potentially causing implant corrosion and the release of metal ions into the surrounding tissue. These metal ions …
Strengthening Higher Education For Displaced Students From Burma In Thailand: Identifying Collective Interest And Expanding Value Across Diverse Stakeholders, Claire Holba
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) lists three “durable” pathways for displaced persons to address global displacement: “voluntary repatriation,” “local integration” into the initial host community, or third-country “resettlement.” At present, 78% of refugees displaced worldwide remain in a protracted refugee situation, indicating shortcomings in these three pathways. As global displacement surges and the current refugee protection regime fails to offer timely pathways out of displacement, alternative solutions via complementary pathways are critical. Higher Education (HE) pathways, such as scholarships to study at universities, can be one option, and the UNHCR has committed to expanding complementary HE pathways …

The Glen Project: A Transformational Ecology Model Of School-Based Universal Mental Health Development, Cheryl Bowen (Mcelvain)
Teacher Education
This 10-month mixed methods case study utilized a sample of 27 teachers, the school administrator, and 281 low-income, Latinx children and their parents living in northern California to test the hypothesis that a school-based universally designed mental health program (The Glen Project) can strengthen students’ developmental asset attainment and positively impact the school environment within the first year of program implementation. The study utilized triangulated data to ascertain the effects of two program levels, (a) mental health and (b) school support services. All services were site-based and meant to target a wide variety of students and their families. Findings from …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The second wave of COVID-19 is an unprecedented condition in India and began in mid February 2021. Individuals who were already suffering from other comorbidities were found with lung infection, and hence, the number of disease induced deaths were rising faster during the second wave in relation to the first wave. This paper has proposed a mathematical model with fractional order derivatives by correlating the model based number of infectives with the real number of infectives in India. For the system of fractional differential equations, a disease-free state has been computed and proved to be locally asymptotically stable with certain …

Coastal: Crowdsourcing Reports Of Phenomena On The Santa Cruz Coast, Will Maddrey, Daniel Schott, Michael Zetino
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Every day, beachgoers witness important environmental phenomena that go completely undocumented. Huge amounts of potential data that could be used for research are lost because people don’t have the means to report them, or simply don’t understand their significance. Additionally, many of these phenomena are potentially harmful, and are relatively unknown to the public. In this paper, we develop an iOS and Android mobile app called Coastal, with the goal of crowdsourcing reports of phenomena on the Santa Cruz coast. We hope that in the future, applications like Coastal can be used for both collecting data for environmental research, and …

Filmmaking is a financially high-risk field of work. There are multiple variables that contribute to a movie’s success or failure, however the most impactful ones have yet to be identified. In this paper, we used publicly available datasets in combination with several forms of analysis models to determine common factors associated with historically successful movies. Our results narrowed the top categories to include the runtime, the production budget, the release year, the genres, and the primary language. The final round of analysis yielded an 84% accuracy, after the usage of XGBoosting and gradient boosting. Further improvements to this project could …

Dialogs Re-Enacted Across Languages, Version 2, Nigel G. Ward, Jonathan E. Avila, Emilia Rivas, Divette Marco
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To support machine learning of cross-language prosodic mappings and other ways to improve speech-to-speech translation, we present a protocol for collecting closely matched pairs of utterances across languages, a description of the resulting data collection and its public release, and some observations and musings. This report is intended for:
- people using this corpus
- people extending this corpus
- people designing similar collections of bilingual dialog data.
Change Notes. This version supersedes UTEP-CS-22-108. There is some new information and numerous clarifications, mostly arising from our experiences diversifying our corpus and helping a vendor to use this protocol.
Air Pollution, Regulations On Emission And Firms' Social Responsibility, Jun Myung Song
Air Pollution, Regulations On Emission And Firms' Social Responsibility, Jun Myung Song
Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
This paper examines whether firms adjust their strategy in emission when air pollution is severe. Considering high PM 2.5 as severe air pollution across 65 countries, I show that firms from countries with severe air pollution have low emission score, suggesting that they put less effort in reducing emission. This is because if they improve emission strategy, firm performance deteriorates. However, such relationship disappears when the government’s environmental stringency is strong, suggesting that government’s intervention is crucial for sustainable environment. This paper concludes with analysis on the factors which can mediate the negative impact of air pollution on firms’ emission …

Empathic Reflections By Themselves Are Not Effective: Meta-Analysis And Qualitative Synthesis, Robert Elliott, Arthur Bohart, Dale G. Larson, Peter Muntigl, Olga Smoliak
Counseling Psychology
Objective: We present a mixed methods systematic review of the effectiveness of therapist empathic reflections, which have been adopted by a range of approaches to communicate an understanding of client communications and experiences.
Methods: We begin with definitions and subtypes of empathic reflection, drawing on relevant research and theory, including conversation analysis. We distinguish between empathic reflections, reviewed here, and the relational quality of empathy (reviewed in previous meta-analyses). We look at how empathic reflections are assessed and present examples of successful and unsuccessful empathic reflections, also providing a framework of the different criteria used to assess their effectiveness (e.g., …
Women, Divorce, Tobacco, And Outplacements Of Children: Uncovering Family Secrets In Switzerland, Tito Craige
Women, Divorce, Tobacco, And Outplacements Of Children: Uncovering Family Secrets In Switzerland, Tito Craige
Swiss American Historical Society Review
From early in the nineteenth century until the 1950s, tens of thousands of Swiss children were taken from their homes and placed with foster families or sold at auction. The mothers of the outplaced children were usually poor and divorced; some were alleged to be prostitutes. One of these mothers was the author’s great-grandmother, Dorothea Hürlimann. In 1895, because she was divorced and managed a tobacco store in Geneva’s red-light district, her three children were sent to live with foster families. The middle child, Dora, was four years old when she was placed with a family in Winterthur and began …

Shifting Educational Paradigms To Match Learners: Sustaining Cultures, Languages, And Paradigms Through Educational Sovereignty, Lona R. Running Wolf
The Montana English Journal
The U.S. system of education was developed by visionary forefathers that knew American democracy would be stable only through educated citizens. The system was developed to produce citizens that would carry on the new world's vision and values. The educational system was built within that paradigm. Simultaneously, Indigenous tribes in America were being stripped of their traditional educational systems whose purpose was also to develop productive citizens of their communities and carry on their values. Traditional educational systems among tribes developed children with positive self-identity carrying the pride of their culture, language, and paradigm. That is not the case for …

The Impact Of Leadership Turnover On Child Welfare Workforce Initiatives, Courtney Harrison, Megan Paul
The Impact Of Leadership Turnover On Child Welfare Workforce Initiatives, Courtney Harrison, Megan Paul
QIC-Takes
Turnover among public child welfare leaders is prevalent. Across the eight QIC-WD intervention sites, leadership turnover was one of the most common implementation challenges observed by the QIC-WD team. Leadership changes can disrupt the implementation of a workforce initiative by shifting agency-level priorities, the organizational climate, or key staff.
Child welfare leaders may be appointed or hired in many different ways in different jurisdictions. In some states, the Governor appoints a cabinet-level child welfare director who oversees a stand-alone agency. This means that child welfare leadership changes follow the political election cycle with new governors appointing new agency leaders every …
