The Unsmart Home: A Steam Approach To Coding Though Drama And Creative Play, Jennifer R. Roberts

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This article examines how integrating drama and coding can enhance computational thinking, creativity, and inclusivity in children. Grounded in constructivist and embodied learning theories, it presents The UnSmart Home, a drama-based coding experience. In this immersive project, children interact with a mal-functioning smart home through character-led, narrative challenges that require basic coding to solve problems. This approach reframes programming as creative play, making abstract concepts tangible through storytelling and physical engagement. Positioned within the STEAM education framework, the article argues that drama offers a powerful entry point into technical learning. It supports multimodal learning, encourages collaboration, and challenges stereotypes about …

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This interview spotlights Sara Kapadia, founder of the STEAM Journal, tracing the origins, evolution, and enduring vision of a publication designed to bridge the divide between art and science. Emerging from her dual experiences as an artist and education researcher, Sara created the journal to address a perceived gap between academic and creative communities: spaces that, while often siloed, engage parallel questions about the world. Grounded in her doctoral research on the shared curiosity of artists and scientists, the journal advances a transdisciplinary approach that invites contributors to move fluidly between visual, written, and scholarly forms. In conversation, Sara …

The Fool’S Errand: Art As Resistance. Art As Hope, Edwin Urbina

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This editorial offers a perspective on the role of laughter and the comedic arts through the trope of the Fool or Jester. Comedic arts not just speak truth to power through the ages; it also offers society hope, resilience, and resistance though counter narratives that make us laugh at "emperors without clothes".

The Case For Undergraduate Student Organizing, Nina Goldshmid Apr 2026

The Case For Undergraduate Student Organizing, Nina Goldshmid

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper is a reflection and timeline of my experience organizing a union and negotiating a contract as a student worker at Barnard College. I explored the power dynamics between student workers and college administrations, how to promote unity for progress, and why some undergraduate students are deciding to organize. I discussed the actions of the college that could stifle union organizing and negotiations, the obstacles involved in organizing, and the ways to build solidarity through awareness and coalition. I summarized the main takeaways from my experience and characterize the current student labor movement.

Strategies In Bargaining Faculty Retrenchment Provisions: Insights From Cases Of Implementing Contract Language, Gary Rhoades Apr 2026

Strategies In Bargaining Faculty Retrenchment Provisions: Insights From Cases Of Implementing Contract Language, Gary Rhoades

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

In this article on faculty (and professional staff) retrenchment, based on my recent national analysis of 506 collective bargaining agreements, I delineate four strategies to negotiating the topic found in contract provisions (with more than one strategy often found in the same contract). The strategies are: Procedural (focused on due process); consultative (addressing employee involvement in deliberations); conditional (defining pre-conditions of retrenchment); and re-alignment (speaking to reversing the decades-long relative disinvestment in academic and student facing professional staff). In exploring four cases of institutions—two community colleges and two universities—experiencing retrenchment, I consider how the contract provisions have played out in …

Academic Freedom In Graduate Student Union Collective Bargaining Agreements, Madeline Rowe Apr 2026

Academic Freedom In Graduate Student Union Collective Bargaining Agreements, Madeline Rowe

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Graduate student unionization has rapidly increased over the last decade, with almost 40% of graduate student employees unionized by 2024. Yet, little is known about how these contracts address graduate students’ academic freedom – an often-ambiguous area due to graduate students’ dual roles on campus as both employees and students. Using textual analysis of thirteen collective bargaining agreements, this study examines how graduate student collective bargaining agreements include and address matters of academic freedom and the implications this may have on graduate students’ roles on campus and in the greater campus hierarchy. Results reveal that graduate student collective bargaining agreements …

Forcing The Issue: Nebraska’S Collective Bargaining Stand-Off, Shannon Cummins Apr 2026

Forcing The Issue: Nebraska’S Collective Bargaining Stand-Off, Shannon Cummins

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper describes the unusual collective bargaining landscape for public academic institutions in the state of Nebraska where state legislation has mandated both pay transparency and limits to the collective bargaining process. Specifically, it explores the unprecedented 2024-2025 bargaining cycle which relied on innovative union tactics of nationwide freedom of information requests (FOIA) to reach contract agreement in the face of twelve years of administration stonewalling tactics. The case study of Nebraska is important as it provides an actual account of negotiations where state limits on collective bargaining have yet to be tested in the courts.

One Faculty, One Mission: A Unified Faculty Model For California Community Colleges, Debbie Klein Apr 2026

One Faculty, One Mission: A Unified Faculty Model For California Community Colleges, Debbie Klein

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This article advances a unified, non-tiered faculty model as essential to fulfilling the mission of the California Community Colleges (CCC) system. Although the system is charged with realizing open access and educational equity, nearly 70% of faculty serve in part-time or contingent roles—often without proportional compensation, institutional stability, or meaningful participation in governance. Drawing on research demonstrating that faculty working conditions shape student learning conditions, the article argues that structural employment inequities undermine the system’s democratic promise. Situating the proposal within national “One Faculty” efforts and recent legislative attention to pay parity in California, it demonstrates that reform is both …

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Background: The timing of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) may critically impact clinical outcomes, yet the ideal surgical window remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association between time-to-CABG and in-hospital outcomes among NSTEMI admissions undergoing CABG.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study utilized the US National Inpatient Sample database from 2017 to 2021 to evaluate the association between time-to-CABG and key in-hospital outcomes, including mortality, cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, ischemic stroke, acute kidney injury, and blood transfusion rates, while assessing length of stay (LOS) and hospital charges exclusively among survivors. Adult admissions with …

Operative Management Of An Ulnar Stress Fracture In A Collegiate Cheerleader, Catherine Allen, Jacob Hackett, Alan Koester, Madison Cunningham, Dana Lycans Apr 2026

Operative Management Of An Ulnar Stress Fracture In A Collegiate Cheerleader, Catherine Allen, Jacob Hackett, Alan Koester, Madison Cunningham, Dana Lycans

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Ulnar stress fractures are relatively rare, particularly in the context of collegiate cheerleading. This case report explores the presentation, diagnosis, and surgical management of an unexpected stress fracture in the ulna of a collegiate cheerleader. An 18-year-old female presented with persistent, localized pain in her non-dominant arm. Imaging revealed an isolated ulnar stress fracture, an unusual finding despite participating in this physically demanding sport. Surgical intervention was deemed necessary, and a nail fixation technique was employed to stabilize the fracture. Ulnar stress fractures, though rare in cheerleading, can present unique challenges. This case report documents the effectiveness of an operative …

Extraparotid Warthin Tumor Presenting As A Cervical Lymph Node Mass: A Case Report., Kristen E. Bowman, Colin Bashline, Konstantinos C. Mantzios, Jack Kelly, David Maki, David Webb

Marshall Journal of Medicine

A Warthin tumor is a salivary gland neoplasm that arises in the parotid gland which is frequently benign. This case study presents a rare instance of a Warthin tumor occurring in an extraparotid location; specifically, within the left-sided cervical lymph nodes of a 64-year-old male patient. The patient initially presented with fluctuating cervical adenopathy. Although an initial ultrasound-guided biopsy was inconclusive,  a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a well-demarcated, heterogeneous lesion in an atypical location between the parotid gland and the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Surgical excision of the mass was performed and the specimen was sent to pathology for further analysis. …

Field Notes: Introducing Godly Play In Cross-Cultural Contexts: Notes From A Short-Term Mission Trip In Kenya, Shannon Clarkson Rains Apr 2026

Field Notes: Introducing Godly Play In Cross-Cultural Contexts: Notes From A Short-Term Mission Trip In Kenya, Shannon Clarkson Rains

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

This field note explores the use of Godly Play in a short-term mission context in Kitale, Kenya. It focuses on the author’s experience using this method to limit the temptation to impose one’s own theological and cultural interpretation when teaching Bible stories. While Godly Play emphasizes open-ended wondering, participants often hesitated to respond, reflecting familiarity with didactic learning environments. The study highlights how prior knowledge, language, and adult mediation influence theological engagement. It argues that pedagogy itself is culturally embedded and offers practical implications for cross-cultural ministry, including the need for cultural awareness, translator preparation, and realistic expectations for short-term …

Witness Beyond Technique: Gospel, Conversion, And The Moral Formation Of The Church, Christopher Flanders Apr 2026

Witness Beyond Technique: Gospel, Conversion, And The Moral Formation Of The Church, Christopher Flanders

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

Technique, efficiency, and measurable outcomes typically govern contemporary Western approaches to evangelism. Such approaches presume a thin account of the gospel, a punctiliar understanding of conversion, and an instrumental view of the church’s witness. This article argues that these assumptions represent not merely pragmatic missteps but theological distortions. Drawing on Scripture, historical theology, missiology, and practices of Christian initiation, I contend that evangelism is best understood as ecclesial witness oriented toward the moral formation of persons and communities under the reign of God. Conversion, on this account, is not a discrete decision secured through persuasive technique but a transformative journey …

Why People Do (And Don’T) Give, Sebastian Dorantes, Erica Jensen, Isabelle Stoddard, Faith Manchester Apr 2026

Why People Do (And Don’T) Give, Sebastian Dorantes, Erica Jensen, Isabelle Stoddard, Faith Manchester

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Philanthropy is a global practice shaped by culture, income, and social norms. Overall giving remains high, but participation is becoming more concentrated. This raises key questions about who gives, why they give, and why others choose not to. Ultimately, the relationship between donors and nonprofit organizations can have a significant impact on philanthropic behavior. It is essential for nonprofits to consider what motivates a person to donate in order to create a point of connection between the donors and the organizations.
