Development And Implementation Of A Practice And Assessment Tool For Middle School Orchestra, Linda Kathy Hughes
Development And Implementation Of A Practice And Assessment Tool For Middle School Orchestra, Linda Kathy Hughes
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a practice and assessment tool, Skill Ladders, as used by my 7th grade orchestra students. This is a tool that I created to help students focus on specific skill acquisition and musical development during their practice time. Designed for the middle section of intermediate level playing skills and aligned with curricular goals, students were to utilize this tool to set goals, practice, self-assess, and demonstrate progress. Prior to utilizing Skill Ladders, students completed a survey of baseline attitudes toward individual practice. After the trial period of the …
Bank Erosion Dynamics In Response To Anthropogenic Disturbances In The Cuivre River Watershed Of Missouri, Usa, Nathan Douglas Sines
Bank Erosion Dynamics In Response To Anthropogenic Disturbances In The Cuivre River Watershed Of Missouri, Usa, Nathan Douglas Sines
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Riverbank erosion is increasingly recognized as a pressing issue exacerbated by human activities. The Cuivre River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, located in northeast Missouri, has limited documentation on bank erosion, with the most recent study conducted in the early 1990s. This research aims to fill this gap by exploring the stream bank erosion dynamics from 1816 to 2015. The objectives are to: (i) understand the channel width dynamics for 1816 to 1994 ii) determine the sediment erosion and deposition volume along the riverbank in the period of 1994 to 2015. iii) identify the anthropogenic disturbances particularly land use …
Towards Dynamic Context Detection From Voice Commands And Conversations With Smart Assistants In Smart Homes, Jeniya Sultana
Towards Dynamic Context Detection From Voice Commands And Conversations With Smart Assistants In Smart Homes, Jeniya Sultana
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Voice-enabled interactions have become increasingly popular with the rise of voice assistants. Identifying contexts or meanings from voice commands and conversations with smart assistants can contribute to the autonomous control of smart home devices and appliances. To improve automation, there is a growing need for efficient context detection that eliminates the need to memorize voice commands. To address this need, I followed a two-step approach in my research. In the first step, I developed a unique context recognition model using a transformer, an attention mechanism, and a fully connected neural network. I trained this model on a conversational dataset of …
Scene Understanding And Spatial Analysis Using Scene Graph Enhanced By Hall's Proxemics Zones In Smart Homes, Debaleen Das Spandan
Scene Understanding And Spatial Analysis Using Scene Graph Enhanced By Hall's Proxemics Zones In Smart Homes, Debaleen Das Spandan
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Voice-controlled smart assistants have received widespread popularity. It plays a pivotal role in smart homes by providing a natural and convenient interface for interacting with smart devices. However, these assistants are unable to serve persons with physical disabilities and speech impairments. Therefore, non-verbal communication methods, such as eye tracking, gesture recognition, and context awareness can complement and overcome some of these limitations to enhance user experience in smart homes. To address this issue, I am investigating non-verbal communication methods to make smart home technology more accessible and intuitive. In this research, I focus on proxemics, i.e., the study of distance …
Determining Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid Adsorption On Nanoparticles Using Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry, Iqra Shakoor
Determining Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid Adsorption On Nanoparticles Using Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry, Iqra Shakoor
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The contamination of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, C8F17SO3H) in water is considered a threat to humans and the environment. The strength of carbon and fluorine bond is responsible for its high stability in the environment. Therefore, it can be transferred from the environment to food sources and eventually humans. This study assessed the ability of nanoparticles to adsorb PFOS from water. The experiment was performed by preparing suspensions of PFOS (10 ppm) and different concentrations (1000 ppm, 500 ppm, 250 ppm) of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) or magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs). The suspensions …
Empowered Womanhood In Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’S “Sultana’S Dream” And Greta Gerwig’S Barbie: Keys To The Ideal World, Tasnuva Tabassum
Empowered Womanhood In Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’S “Sultana’S Dream” And Greta Gerwig’S Barbie: Keys To The Ideal World, Tasnuva Tabassum
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s “Sultana’s Dream” (1905) and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) present feminist utopias separated by more than a century. Despite the temporal gap, both works introduce worlds where traditional gender roles are reversed. This thesis explores Hossain’s and Gerwig’s suggestions to create ideal worlds through empowerment of women. Considering evolution of feminist utopian thought from the beginning of the twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first, and the differences in feminisms from East to West, this thesis analyzes the narrative structures, thematic elements, and cultural contexts of these works. Despite differences, both authors seek not just female but …

Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Parenting is a demanding and stressful responsibility that leads to increased feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression among caregivers, which research has found to be significantly related to social incompetence and behavioral problems in children during early childhood. However, certain parenting practices such as parental emotion regulation, mindful parenting, and parental reflective functioning have been found to support children’s socioemotional development, and in particular emotion regulation. This study utilized a cross-sectional design to explore the relationship between the parenting practices of parental emotion regulation, mindful parenting, and parental reflective functioning in relation to children’s emotion regulation using simple linear regression …
Temporal Distribution Of Potential Waterborne Pathogens In Sequiota Spring, William J. Durstock
Temporal Distribution Of Potential Waterborne Pathogens In Sequiota Spring, William J. Durstock
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Waterborne pathogens from human fecal matter pose a significant health risk in karst environments, where domestic wastewater can easily be transferred to the shallow groundwater system via old, leaky septic tanks and damaged sewer lines. This study monitored fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and potential pathogens in Sequiota Spring located in the karst region of southwest Missouri, using Microbial Source Tracking (MST) and Illumina DNA sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. MST identified high levels of human fecal indicator bacteria (HFIB) (up to 110,000 cells/L) in July 2020. By June 2022, HFIB levels had dropped significantly (55-fold reduction) after the City …
Foreign Intervention And Internal Displacement: Urban Politics In Postwar Beirut, Amanda Rizkallah
Foreign Intervention And Internal Displacement: Urban Politics In Postwar Beirut, Amanda Rizkallah
All Faculty Open Access Publications
Uneven democratization is a common yet poorly understood legacy of civil war. In the aftermath of the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), wartime processes of displacement interacted with Syria's intervention to transform local postwar political orders. In Beirut's suburbs, the bonds built between armed actors and displaced populations created opportunities for displaced people to extract responsiveness from local institutions, despite their vulnerability. But the power of displaced populations in their host community hinges on the fate of the locally dominant armed actor. If the armed actor is an ally of the intervening power, it can maintain political control over its strongholds, …

This study provides the first investigation of the complete group of variables in the expanded theory of uses and gratifications on consumer engagement in an all-service social media platform. Consumer engagement is measured both from a psychological state and behavioral perspective, an approach which is important since the antecedent variables in uses and gratifications theory have both psychological and behavioral manifestations. A survey is conducted in Mainland China on WeChat with 805 respondents. Antecedent variables and consumer engagement are measured using previously validated scales. Regression analyses find that the antecedent variables of entertainment, integration/social interaction, personal identity, information, remuneration, and …
Sptbn1 Involvement In Reverse Transcription Of Hiv-1 Infection In Chme3 Cells, Jeanette Drecker
Sptbn1 Involvement In Reverse Transcription Of Hiv-1 Infection In Chme3 Cells, Jeanette Drecker
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) is a lentivirus that infects CD4+ cells, causing a
weakened immune system that leads to the development of Acquired Immunodeficiency
Syndrome (AIDS). HIV utilizes host proteins to replicate. A genome wide screen by Brass has
shown that the molecular scaffolding protein, SPTBN1, is essential for HIV-1 infection.
However, the viral replication steps that SPTBN1 impacts are not known. Previous work in the
Hulme Lab has shown that SPTBN1 knockdown delays HIV capsid uncoating but does not
impact viral fusion kinetics. Uncoating and reverse transcription of HIV-1 occur simultaneously.
Therefore, the goal for this study was …

34. "Language Weaves Its Tapestry": Crafting Found Poetry Using Ai Tools, Ruth Li
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
In this chapter, I offer a pedagogical approach to teaching creative writing in the era of Al technologies. I share an activity that engages students in crafting found poetry using Al tools such as ChatGPT. Found poems are collage-like assemblages drawn from other sources such as newspaper or magazine articles. By immersing students in crafting found poems using Al, I inspire creative experimentation with Al-generated texts. Even as writing processes become automated and writing styles standardized, I posit that this found poem activity nurtures students' careful attunement to the materiality of language, to its shape and texture as words unfold …

33. Chatgpt Assistance In Creating Chemistry Practice Problems: Pitfalls, Positives, And Possibilities, Michael A. Christiansen
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
ChatGPT, a relatively new Large Language Model (LLM) artificial intelligence (Al) chatbot, has gained significant attention as the most downloaded software app, accruing over 100 million users within two months of its release. This software can generate quick, articulate responses to virtually any textual query. Many educators are concerned about its potential for enabling student cheating. However, it currently suffers significant limitations in solving chemistry problems-documented through peer-reviewed articles and from the author's experience suggesting that chemistry students will perform far better, on average, by studying than by relying on ChatGPT. This is particularly true of math-centric problems, which the …

32. Using Generative Ai In The Music History Classroom, Reba Wissner
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
Generative Al affords students and college teaching both challenges and opportunities, though faculty mainly focus on the challenges, as most discussion centers on assignment modification to prevent plagiarism and concentrate on text-generating Al. However, there is an entire world of Al tools that are not text limited that can be used to create non-text-based outputs and can be used for information recall and transferability of student knowledge; these tools are well-suited to the arts. One discipline in which these tools can be used is music; specifically, music history. Al generation tools not specifically created for music, such as chatbots, can …

30. Revising Llm Text To (Re)Discover Rhetoric In A Graduate Seminar, Clancy Ratliff
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
In this essay, I share an assignment that asks students to engage in rhetorical revision of LLM text using a changelog table as a tool to document the revision. To demonstrate to the students what I was asking them to do, I did the assignment myself, and my example is included in this chapter as well. I argue that the style of generated text from LLMs calls for increased resistance to the norms and conventions of school writing and an embrace of writing that's more rhetorical: a bit more personal, risky, rule-breaking, creative, and experimental, intentionally centering purpose and audience. …

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
This chapter shares context, assignment details, and impact of revisions of a research journal assignment in our first-year writing program at a mid-sized private university in the Midwest. With the rise of access to large language processing models like ChatGPT in Spring 2023, we reviewed our curriculum to consider what assignments might be most vulnerable to Al-generated writing. Our bibliography assignment was an obvious contender, since it focused on summary of individual sources. Thus, we worked with our research librarian liaison to reimagine this assignment, guided by a conversation about learning goals. After reviewing relevant scholarship on source use and …
