Conversational Localization: Indoor Human Localization Through Intelligent Conversation, Sheshadri Smitha, Kotaro Hara Jan 2024

Conversational Localization: Indoor Human Localization Through Intelligent Conversation, Sheshadri Smitha, Kotaro Hara

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a novel sensorless approach to indoor localization by leveraging natural language conversations with users, which we call conversational localization. To show the feasibility of conversational localization, we develop a proof-of-concept system that guides users to describe their surroundings in a chat and estimates their position based on the information they provide. We devised a modular architecture for our system with four modules. First, we construct an entity database with available image-based floor maps. Second, we enable the dynamic identification and scoring of information provided by users through our utterance processing module. Then, we implement a conversational agent that …

Conceptthread: Visualizing Threaded Concepts In Mooc Videos, Zhiguang Zhou, Li Ye, Lihong Cai, Lei Wang, Yigang Wang, Yongheng Wang, Wei Chen, Yong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platforms are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Online learners need to watch the whole course video on MOOC platforms to learn the underlying new knowledge, which is often tedious and time-consuming due to the lack of a quick overview of the covered knowledge and their structures. In this paper, we propose ConceptThread , a visual analytics approach to effectively show the concepts and the relations among them to facilitate effective online learning. Specifically, given that the majority of MOOC videos contain slides, we first leverage video processing and speech analysis techniques, including shot recognition, …

Grasping The Third Rail: Restorative Justice And Violent Crime, Olwyn Conway Jan 2024

Grasping The Third Rail: Restorative Justice And Violent Crime, Olwyn Conway

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Restorative justice is a means of responding to harm— including criminal offenses—through active accountability and repair, rather than through passive punishment and isolation. While restorative justice has demonstrated potential to meaningfully improve processes and outcomes for individuals and communities, the implementation of restorative justice programs to address crime—both within and alongside the American criminal system—has been slow, limited, and misplaced. Programs are often directed at low-level, nonviolent offenses that involve little if any cognizable harm. This approach creates two problems. One, it risks net-widening: bringing more citizens under criminal surveillance and carceral control for minor offenses—further diluting the constitutional and …

Owning Health Equity Entrepreneurship, Capital, And Community-Owned Health, Thomas Williams Jan 2024

Owning Health Equity Entrepreneurship, Capital, And Community-Owned Health, Thomas Williams

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

There is a long history of recognized health disparities affecting marginalized communities in the United States. These disparities have complicated and deep roots, but multiple factors can be controlled in the short term, such as access to high-quality medical care. Public and private institutions often use incentives to focus the efforts of private actors towards specified goals; incentives can also be calibrated to mitigate health disparities through a health equity entrepreneurial model.

To understand the possibilities and complications of this model of health equity-focused entrepreneurship, this Article uses the Black and American Indian maternal mortality and morbidity crises as a …

The Power Of Polish: Exploring The Impact Of Nail Adornments On Perceptions Of Attraction, Sara Demichele Jan 2024

The Power Of Polish: Exploring The Impact Of Nail Adornments On Perceptions Of Attraction, Sara Demichele

Honors Theses

Understanding the significance of nail adornments in shaping perceptions of attractiveness and mate value provides insights into human behavior and preferences. In the current investigation, participants rated human nail length and color on physical attractiveness and partner desirability measures. Results revealed significant effects of nail length and color across different demographic groups. Medium-length nails consistently received higher ratings for physical attractiveness, cuteness, and partner desirability compared to short and long nails. White-colored nails were generally rated most attractive, while blue and black nails received the lowest ratings. Additionally, participants reported a moderate association between having manicured nails and feelings of …

Relationships Between Cognitive And Physical Performance And Readiness In Military Populations, Lina Ochoa Jan 2024

Relationships Between Cognitive And Physical Performance And Readiness In Military Populations, Lina Ochoa

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Military missions and operations expose warfighters to stressful and demanding situations and dynamic environments. These situations and environments require that warfighters have optimal performance in several dimensions of human performance, such as cognitive and physical performance. Military readiness is the potential these military units or personnel have to successfully deploy and sustain assigned operational missions worldwide. Military readiness is essential for increased physical and cognitive performance, ensuring augmented individual and unit effectiveness, lethality, and national security. The primary challenge is understanding and finding ways to measure and assess the cognitive, behavioral, and physical performance effects of complex and challenging environments …

Health Information Orientation, Social Support, And Diabetes Self-Care Behavior Among Indian Adults: The Roles Of Education And Self-Efficacy, Yam Limbu, Devon Johnson, C. Jayachandran, Christopher J. Mckinley, P. Raghunadha Reddy

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

This study examines the direct and indirect influences of health information orientation and social support on diabetes self-care behavior through self-efficacy and the moderating role of education on such indirect effects. Data were collected from Indian adults with type 2 diabetes using a self-administered questionnaire. Results suggest that self-efficacy fully mediates the link between health information orientation and diabetes self-care behaviors. In addition, social support is directly related to self-care behaviors and indirectly through self-efficacy. This indirect association was stronger among patients with higher education compared with those with a lower level of education. The results offer several public health …

Do Pediatric Patients That Receive Dexmedetomidine As Premedication Experience Less Emergence Delirium Than Pediatric Patients That Receive Midazolam As Premedication?, Shelby Mccloud Jan 2024

Do Pediatric Patients That Receive Dexmedetomidine As Premedication Experience Less Emergence Delirium Than Pediatric Patients That Receive Midazolam As Premedication?, Shelby Mccloud

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Title: Do pediatric patients that receive dexmedetomidine as premedication experience less emergence delirium than pediatric patients that receive midazolam as premedication?

Problem Statement: Midazolam remains the current choice within the practice for premedication in the prevention of emergence delirium, however as research continues there could possibly be a gap between the research and current practice. Throughout the practice of pediatric anesthesia most providers choose to premedicate with midazolam while there may be a more beneficial option of dexmedetomidine.

Results: The study found a significant variance in the incidence of emergence delirium among pediatric patients, ranging from 18.1% to 89%, depending …
