Masking During The Pandemic: Their Role In Possible Delaying Medical Diagnoses; A Case Report, Sanjana Das, Ryan Kanungo, Ranjita Sengupta May 2024

Masking During The Pandemic: Their Role In Possible Delaying Medical Diagnoses; A Case Report, Sanjana Das, Ryan Kanungo, Ranjita Sengupta

Research Day

Introduction:

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought a profound global shift particularly in medicine and daily life (2). Within healthcare, masks assumed heightened significance as frontline workers attended to potentially infected/infected patients. Initially, limited data existed on effectiveness, mask types, and ideal duration of use, resulting in a generalized protocol of patients and the healthcare team wearing masks during healthcare visits (3). While serving as a shield against COVID-19, masks also possess the potential to conceal subtle disease indicators present only beneath their covering. Notably, no studies to date have explored whether the widespread use of masks throughout the pandemic …

Case Study: Lead Contamination Propagation Into Plants Of A Metro Atlanta Home, Jaci Carithers, Samantha Gowen, Mbill Khan, Gokbet Owusu-Poku, Francis Jenney May 2024

Case Study: Lead Contamination Propagation Into Plants Of A Metro Atlanta Home, Jaci Carithers, Samantha Gowen, Mbill Khan, Gokbet Owusu-Poku, Francis Jenney

Research Day

INTRODUCTION: Lead pollution in residential areas of Metro Atlanta has spurred action from the EPA to increase efforts to remediate the contaminated soil, resulting in the designation of the Westside Lead Atlanta, GA Superfund site. Lead poses significant risks to human health, interfering with vital biological functions such as its mimicry and blocking of important calcium-dependent pathways. Contributing to this issue are the historic practices of lead-based industries with poor disposal practices, causing local soil and water pollution. This issue is evident particularly along historical railroad routes used for transporting heavy metal-laden industrial goods. The soil along these routes frequently …

Inhibition Of Sars-Cov-2 Papain-Like Protease By Bioactive Compounds Found In Salvia Miltiorrhiza, Alexander Beringer, Jenny Wong, Devin Lewis, Aribah Ali, Shashidharamurthy Taval, Vicky Mody

Research Day

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19, remains a substantial global public health threat. Despite widespread vaccination efforts, reinfection rates are rising, necessitating a comprehensive examination of vaccine effectiveness against emerging variants. There is an immediate and pressing need to identify potential therapeutic interventions for combating resistant COVID-19 infections. Research has highlighted the significance of nonstructural proteins, including proteases and polymerases, in viral replication, making them attractive targets for drug development. Among these, the Papain-like protease (PLpro), 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro), and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) enzymes play pivotal roles in SARS-CoV-2 replication and are promising candidates …

Research Day

Introduction: Osteopathic medicine is one of the most rapidly growing healthcare professions. Over the past five years, there has been a comprehensive increase in the number of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) physicians by 30%, constituting more than 11% of U.S. physicians. Over the past decade, the number of DO students expanded by 77%, representing more than 25% of U.S. medical students today. While future projections predict a continued exponential increase of DO physicians, the understanding of Osteopathic medicine within the general public remains inconsistent among various age ranges and U.S. geographic regions, and few studies have been conducted to …

Using Machine Learning To Diagnose Misaligned Ct Scans, Sheridan C. Perry, Matthew Folkman, Takara O'Brien, Lauren A. Wilson, Eric Coyle, Raymond W. Liu, Charles T. Price, Victor Huayamave

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The usage of machine learning has grown exponentially in recent years; However, its applicable uses for medical diagnosis are still in an early stage. Conditions such as Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), Cerebral Palsy (CP), and Femoracetabular Impingement (FAI) rely heavily on imaging techniques such as Ultrasound and Computed Tomography (CT) scans. Radiologists use multiple manually computed metrics using these images to diagnose conditions. This is time-intensive and requires an aligned image to get accurate diagnoses. The proposed application uses a deep learning detection algorithm to assist in the metric computation process. The algorithm is implemented using MATLAB R2023A …

Robotic Ad-Hoc Networks, Marius Silaghi, Khulud Alawaji, Mohammed Alghamdi, Akram Alghanmi, Ameerah Alsulami

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics

Practical robotic adhoc networks (RANETs), a type of mobile wireless adhoc networks (WANETs) supporting the WiFi-Direct modes common in internet of things and phone devices, is proposed based on a strategy of exploiting WiFi-Direct connection modes to overcome hardware restrictions. For a certain period of time the community was enthusiastic about the endless opportunities in fair, robust, efficient, and cheap communication created by the Adhoc mode of the WiFi IEEE 802.11 independent basic service set (IBSS) configuration that required no dedicated access points. The mode was a main enabler of wireless Adhoc networks (WANETS). This communication mode unfortunately did not …

Counting The Possibilities: New Numerals And New Opportunities, Ryan Fox May 2024

Counting The Possibilities: New Numerals And New Opportunities, Ryan Fox

Faculty Scholarship Symposium

To support the teaching of a class, I investigated the Kaktovik or Inupiaq number system. What started as an exploration to enhance an education class activity turned into a fascinating addition to my research agenda. The proposed presentation will summarize already accepted work and look forward to new possibilities. My first scholarly work with these numbers had education majors connect their own understanding of mathematics to the addition and subtraction in the number system, challenging the students’ approaches to teaching elementary school children familiar algorithms. In another work, I presented approaches to multiplying these new numbers to local mathematics teachers. …
