Animal culture evolves alongside genomes, and the two modes of inheritance-culture and genes-interact in myriad ways. For example, stable geographic variation in culture can act as a reproductive barrier, thereby facilitating genetic divergence between "cultural populations."White-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) are a well-established model species for bird song learning and cultural evolution, as they have distinct, geographically discrete, and culturally transmitted song types (i.e., song dialects). In this study, we tested the hypothesis that divergence between culturally transmitted songs drives genetic divergence within Nuttall's white-crowned sparrows (Z. l. nuttalli). In accordance with sexual selection theory, we hypothesized that cultural divergence between …

Although epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) might serve as a molecular signature of childhood cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and further promote midlife subclinical CVD, few studies have comprehensively examined these life course associations. This study sought to test whether childhood CVD risk factors predict EAA in adulthood and whether EAA mediates the association between childhood CVD risks and midlife subclinical disease. Among 1,580 Bogalusa Heart Study participants, we estimated extrinsic EAA, intrinsic EAA, PhenoAge acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel), and GrimAge acceleration (GrimAgeAccel) during adulthood. We tested prospective associations of longitudinal childhood body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, lipids, and glucose with EAAs …

Model species continue to underpin groundbreaking plant science research. At the same time, the phylogenetic resolution of the land plant tree of life continues to improve. The intersection of these 2 research paths creates a unique opportunity to further extend the usefulness of model species across larger taxonomic groups. Here we promote the utility of the Arabidopsis thaliana model species, especially the ability to connect its genetic and functional resources, to species across the entire Brassicales order. We focus on the utility of using genomics and phylogenomics to bridge the evolution and diversification of several traits across the Brassicales to …

The Sequential Direct And Indirect Effects Of Mountain Uplift, Climatic Niche, And Floral Trait Evolution On Diversification Dynamics In An Andean Plant Clade, Agnes S. Dellinger, Laura Lagomarsino, Fabián Michelangeli, Stefan Dullinger, Stacey D. Smith May 2024

The Sequential Direct And Indirect Effects Of Mountain Uplift, Climatic Niche, And Floral Trait Evolution On Diversification Dynamics In An Andean Plant Clade, Agnes S. Dellinger, Laura Lagomarsino, Fabián Michelangeli, Stefan Dullinger, Stacey D. Smith

Why and how organismal lineages radiate is commonly studied through either assessing abiotic factors (biogeography, geomorphological processes, and climate) or biotic factors (traits and interactions). Despite increasing awareness that both abiotic and biotic processes may have important joint effects on diversification dynamics, few attempts have been made to quantify the relative importance and timing of these factors, and their potentially interlinked direct and indirect effects, on lineage diversification. We here combine assessments of historical biogeography, geomorphology, climatic niche, vegetative, and floral trait evolution to test whether these factors jointly, or in isolation, explain diversification dynamics of a Neotropical plant clade …

Cellulose Nanofiber As Mask/Personal Protective Equipment Surface Agent For Enhanced Anti-Bacterial Performance, Sophia Jackson, Jonathan Chen May 2024

Cellulose Nanofiber As Mask/Personal Protective Equipment Surface Agent For Enhanced Anti-Bacterial Performance, Sophia Jackson, Jonathan Chen

Faculty Publications

The utilization of face-covering masks as an extended form of personal protective equipment has led to exponential waste measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, with estimations of up to 7200 tons of medical-type waste daily. A primary cause of this waste is surgical layered disposable masks that are constructed by melt-blown nonwovens usually made of non-biodegradable thermoplastic polymers like polypropylene. To increase widespread sustainable options to the public, commercialized or do-it-yourself-based fabric masks serve as a solution, but their resistance to harmful molecules is less than that of the medical-grade masks due to the fabric structure that leaves space for penetration. …

Moving Beyond Transactions: Understanding The Relationships Between College Access Professionals And Underrepresented College-Bound Families, Stephany Cuevas May 2024

Moving Beyond Transactions: Understanding The Relationships Between College Access Professionals And Underrepresented College-Bound Families, Stephany Cuevas

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Framed by family engagement frameworks, this study presents four types of interactions college access professionals (CAPs) have with the families of underrepresented college-going students—inconsistent communication, transactional exchanges, student-family mediation, and trusting relationships—to explore the nature of family-educator partnerships for students’ college access. Drawing from in-depth qualitative interviews with a diverse sample of 20 CAPs, this study demonstrates that the nature of these interactions and their corresponding family engagement practices are influenced by CAPs’ job requirements and previous experiences working with families. This ultimately shapes their ability to invest in and develop strong, trusting partnerships with students’ families. By understanding these …

Data collected for this study included selected excerpts from Egyptian live stand-up shows in addition to interviews with stand-up comedians to collect more in-depth information about how they perceive stand-up comedy as a form of art and how they select their topics and develop their stand-up material. For this paper, two analytical approaches were applied: 1) A thematic approach to closely investigate the range …

Advances In High-Speed Store Separation For Upward-Ejected Stores And Dynamic Cavity Doors, Timothy Wolfe May 2024

Advances In High-Speed Store Separation For Upward-Ejected Stores And Dynamic Cavity Doors, Timothy Wolfe

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As technology continues to evolve for aircraft-deployed weapons, computational approaches to store separation analysis face new challenges. Anticipating vehicle designs that require upward store ejection, this study uses computational fluid dynamics and 6DoF motion analysis to predict such store trajectories in high-speed flow. Several store designs are analyzed at various ejection velocities in Mach 4 and Mach 6 conditions. The trajectory results show that streamlined store geometries may not induce sufficient drag to clear the aircraft after ejection. However, store designs with drag-enhancing features show potential for safe separation trajectories. To account for the unsteady effects of a cavity door …

Can Jury Instructions Reduce The Negative Impact Of Pretrial Publicity?, Skylar J. Oxford May 2024

Can Jury Instructions Reduce The Negative Impact Of Pretrial Publicity?, Skylar J. Oxford

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The increasing prevalence of pretrial publicity (PTP), media coverage of a case that occurs prior to a trial, raises concerns about fair trials. Jurors may rely on pretrial information rather than trial information to decide the fate of a defendant and may even confuse the sources of the information. While it is difficult to limit jurors’ exposure to PTP, jury instructions to improve memory for trial information may limit these effects. Participants (N=100) read negative PTP articles about a defendant. A week later, they were randomly assigned to jury instruction conditions (notetaking, question-posing, or standard) and watched a trial video …

Results indicated significant increases in both perceived knowledge and behavior change, suggesting that the program is effective in strengthening family relationships, improving parenting practices, developing emotional competency, and helping families envision a positive future. One of the …

The Effect Of Altitude On Decomposition: Toward An Understanding Of The Postmortem Interval In The Rocky Mountain Region Of Colorado., Christiane Irene Baigent May 2024

The Effect Of Altitude On Decomposition: Toward An Understanding Of The Postmortem Interval In The Rocky Mountain Region Of Colorado., Christiane Irene Baigent

Dissertations

The estimation of postmortem interval (PMI) is a critical component of medicolegal death investigation. An accurate PMI estimate has the potential to influence the allocation of investigative resources, establish the probative value of associated biological and material evidence, shape the analytical framework applied to skeletal analysis, and inform cause and manner of death. Forensic anthropologists are often tasked with PMI estimation throughout all stages of decomposition and typically rely on categorical phases of soft tissue and skeletal change purported to correspond to broad estimates of elapsed time. In an attempt to improve precision, Megyesi et al. (2005) developed the Total …

A Survey Of The Biodiversity And Phylogeny Of Pucciniales Collected In Puerto Rico, Catherine Liana Rock May 2024

A Survey Of The Biodiversity And Phylogeny Of Pucciniales Collected In Puerto Rico, Catherine Liana Rock

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Rust fungi (Pucciniales) are a diverse group of fungi belonging to the phylum Basidiomycota. Rusts are obligate biotrophic parasites that infect vascular plants many of which have economic and agricultural importance such as legumes, wheat, and coffee crops (Helfer, 2013, Kolmer et al., 2009). In tropical regions of the world, only about 3-4% of the estimated Pucciniales species diversity is known (Piepenbring et al., 2011). This study aims to determine phylogenetic groupings of Pucciniales collected in Puerto Rico using molecular data and to compare this data to rust species previously identified in Cuba, a closely related tropical location in terms …

Investigating And Modeling The Rate Of Syncytia Formation In Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Rsv), Emily Hope Landwehr May 2024

Investigating And Modeling The Rate Of Syncytia Formation In Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Rsv), Emily Hope Landwehr

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that infects humans and causes a range of symptoms similar to a common cold. Severe cases result in pneumonia and hospitalization. A critical mechanism for RSV spread is lateral cell-cell transmission that can result in the formation of multinucleated syncytia, a single cell containing multiple nuclei. Syncytia formation is known to influence RSV transmission in vitro. Previous studies have contributed to the development of a current viral kinetic model that shows a representation for the progression of viral infections. A limitation to this model is that it does not account for syncytia …

Sports in our societies play a more crucial role than often given credit. Teams of any level can significantly impact the community they come from and those they make contact with. The all-Black Crispus Attucks High School basketball team is a prominent case study for this argument. Their state championships in 1955 and 1956 in Indiana put how sports can impact ways of thinking on display. A team led by future hall-of-fame player Oscar Robertson, the Attucks Tigers stormed to victory in games across the state. Indiana had long been influenced by the Ku Klux Klan activity that resurfaced in …

Elation Or Tranquility: The Impact Of Music And Mood On Memory, Grace A. Reynolds May 2024

Elation Or Tranquility: The Impact Of Music And Mood On Memory, Grace A. Reynolds

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In this thesis, I researched how music is intertwined with mood and in what ways it can affect one’s memory. A lot of research indicates that mood can affect one’s memory (e.g., Lee & Sternthal, 1999). For example, it was found that respondents remember information better when in a positive mood rather than a neutral mood. Yet, other research has found that positive moods can reduce the processing of information (Lee & Sternthal, 1999). Additionally, research shows that having a mood in one setting can encourage the recall of information obtained in that setting when the same mood occurs later …

Realistic Responses Or Unnecessary Stereotypes: State Policy And Cbp Encounters In The 100 Mile Border Zone, Makenna Marie Territo

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The field of immigration policy is categorized broadly as an untouchable federal policy issue with nonexistent bipartisan legislation, that is vital in addressing tensions in the current political climate. The lack of response at the federal level has large repercussions for individuals in communities along the border who want things done who take on issues at the local level. State level responses are then exacted in the form of legislation whether these policies are based on data or stereotypes. States have made history for their restrictive immigration policies along the Southern border as tensions skyrocket. In some cases, the affected …

“Freedom, You Have Turned From Me!” Exploring The Facts Vs. The Fiction Of Sisi In Netflix’S The Empress, Anastasia Marie Raebel

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

As one of the most beautiful women of her day, head-strong, and in opposition to the strict traditions of her court life, Empress Elisabeth of Austria - also known as Sisi - is remembered for her confidence and free-spirit. While Sisi’s image is admired throughout Austria (and Bavaria) on postcards, posters, and knick-knacks, she is lesser known to American audiences. During her life, she was often criticized for leaving her responsibilities with the court to go on long trips or for prioritizing her love of Hungary over the Austrian people. However, after the Empress’s tragic death, her public image changed; …

Tpm^Ph Derivative Of Tungsten; Hydrogen-Bonding In 7-Coordinate Cation Complex, Olivia Ryon Simcox

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Tpm^Ph, or tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)methane reacts with tungsten hexacarbonyl to form the ligand-metal complex tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)methane tungsten tricarbonyl, or Tpm^PhW(CO)3. The further complexes of Tpm^PhW(CO)3 and Tpm^PhMo(CO)3 are not known. This project aims to explore how the addition of a phenyl substituent to the pyrazole ring on Tpm impacts the synthesis of [Tpm^PhW(CO)3I]+X– and [Tpm^PhW(CO)3H]+X–. The inclusion of this phenyl substituent may impact the possible hydrogen bonding of then hydrogen contained in the carbon-hydrogen bond. This work aims to explore the extent of hydrogen-bonding of the carbon-hydrogen bond of the Tpm^Ph ligand in cationic metal complexes.

Examining Women’S Power Under Fascism: Francoist Spain, Isabelle Rojek May 2024

Examining Women’S Power Under Fascism: Francoist Spain, Isabelle Rojek

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Due to the #MeToo movement and the overturning of Roe v. Wade debates about women's power are at the forefront of society. These debates have sparked an increase in trying to understand how political systems function, as well as how those systems allocate power and agency to women. Using the case of Francisco Franco’s rule over Spain from 1939 to 1977, a conclusion was drawn that the power and agency that women have is most often within the home and family life, which is both the power and the limit of it. Unless they were in a position of high …

Analyzing The Influence Of Gender Biases On College Students' Attitudes Towards Flexible Work Arrangements, Leah Elizabeth Rubino

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Flexible work arrangements are becoming more prominent after the Covid-19 pandemic. These flexible work arrangements, including flextime and flexplace structures, better allow for working individuals to find a work-life balance and have been shown to improve morale and productivity. However, previous studies have found that gender biases impact the utilization of flexible work arrangements as well as the attitudes and perceptions towards those who employ them. We propose that these gender bias impacts on the utilization and perception of flexible work arrangements will differ between college students with no work experience from the data collected using individuals in the workforce, …
