Direct Democracy In The Twenty-First Century: Massachusetts Open Town Meeting And Citizen Participation, Daniel W. Santos
Direct Democracy In The Twenty-First Century: Massachusetts Open Town Meeting And Citizen Participation, Daniel W. Santos
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Town Meeting is a unique system of democratic governance that can be found only in New England towns, where it has been the primary form of local government for nearly four centuries. Town Meeting is a type of direct democracy where laws, policy, and decisions are made by a plurality of a town’s eligible voters acting as its legislative body. There is limited scholarship addressing Town Meeting, with much of the extant literature focusing on the benefits of the direct democracy aspect of this form of government. Town Meeting has been generally known to be poorly attended by citizens. The …
An Ai-Integrated Methodology For Secure Software And System Development, Ian Matthew Campbell Coston
An Ai-Integrated Methodology For Secure Software And System Development, Ian Matthew Campbell Coston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Securing interconnected software systems requires more than layering existing frameworks on top of each other. Most current Secure Software and System Development Lifecycle (S-SDLC) models treat security as a phase rather than a design condition, leaving real gaps in governance, access control, and automated enforcement that become critical failure points in Internet of Things (IoT) environments where devices are resource-constrained, long-lived, and frequently insecure by default.
This dissertation introduces the Automated Zero Trust Risk Management with DevSecOps Integration (AZTRM-D) methodology, a novel approach that unifies DevSecOps automation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Risk Management Framework (RMF), and …

Global Inventory And Audit Of Road Injury Data Systems: A Descriptive Study Using The Road Injury Chain Of Survival Framework, Tim Nutbeam, Emily Foote, Lauren R. Rodgers, Rob Fenwick, Willem Stassen
Peninsula Medical School
BackgroundRoad injury causes an estimated 1.19 million deaths annually and tens of millions of non-fatal injuries worldwide. Despite this burden, post-collision data remain fragmented across police, transport, and health sectors, impeding system-level improvement. The recently proposed Road Injury Chain of Survival framework provides a structure for mapping data needs across five sequential links: Early Recognition, Early Rescue, Early Initial Care, Early Transport, and Early Hospital Care & Rehabilitation. This study aims to identify and describe national and major regional road injury datasets worldwide and to assess their coverage against a novel RICS-derived sub-indicator framework.MethodsA structured, descriptive global audit was undertaken …

Improving medication adherence in adolescents who had a liver transplant (iMALT), a prospective, block-randomized, single-blind, controlled multisite study in 13 pediatric transplant centers, used the medication level variability index (MLVI) to identify nonadherent adolescents. It compared a 2-year remote behavioral telemetric intervention (TI) that focused on adherence and addressed barriers to standard of care (SOC). The primary endpoint was the composite incidence of centrally determined (3 masked pathologists) rejection, death, retransplantation, or consent withdrawal. In 148 participants (TI group, n = 72 and the SOC group, n = 76), with a mean age 15.5 years, there were twice as many …

Many topics in the behavioral sciences and epidemiology require researchers to directly observe entities (e.g., individuals, households) over a long time to identify lasting effects. Long-term panel data collection is more common in high-income countries than in small-scale rural societies (SSRS) of low-income countries. SSRS are mobile, nature-dependent, linguistic minorities, and highly autarkic. Analyzing such data using a life-course perspective can help uncover patterns that align or upend what we know from high-income countries. This study a) reviews long (>∼10 year) panels in SSRS (n = 9), b) extends the analysis to cover somewhat comparable societies of smallholders (n …

OBJECTIVES: Accurate identification of acute stroke by the Emergency Medical Dispatch Centre (EMDC) is essential for timely treatment and efficient resource use. However, stroke mimics-conditions resembling stroke can often lead to overtriage, complicating emergency care. We aimed to quantify EMDC stroke overtriage and compare characteristics of stroke mimics with confirmed stroke cases.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Patients with suspected stroke identified by the EMDC in Western Norway between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2022.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 8,261 patients with EMDC suspected stroke were included. Stroke suspicion was determined using the Norwegian Medical Priority Dispatch System, which …
Chronicles Of Despair And Hope: Food Wars On The Frontline Of Motherhood, Gemma M. Carney
Chronicles Of Despair And Hope: Food Wars On The Frontline Of Motherhood, Gemma M. Carney
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
In this paper I use first-person literary accounts of the hope and despair experienced by women when feeding infants and young children. In Soldier Sailor, Claire Kilroy offers a vivid depiction of attempts to get healthy and nutritious food into an evasive toddler. In her memoir, Making Babies: stumbling into motherhood, Anne Enright dedicates two whole pages to the word “haNang.” The word portrays endless crying of her breast-fed baby if she ate anything other than brown rice. These visceral depictions of mothers’ experiences of feeding children raise interesting questions for gastronomic studies. Some of our most treasured childhood food …

What My Grandma Ate, What My Grandma Wrote: Culinary Memory, Migration, And Changing Foodways In A Cretan–Turkish Household, Sedef Özgönül Donuktan
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper explores the difference between daily eating habits (what is “eaten”) and handwritten recipe notebooks (what is “written”) within a Cretan-Turkish kinship network influenced by migration and resettlement. By combining oral history interviews with five women and analysing 242 notebook recipes, the study shows that these handwritten books are not just passive records of daily meals. Instead, they serve as selective domestic archives shaped by a “festive bias,” standardisation, and social value. The research indicates that while routine meals (such as stews) depend on embodied, unrecorded knowledge, the notebooks mainly contain special dough recipes using modern industrial ingredients like …

When Guide Michelin Came (Back) To Town: Christopher Driver, The Good Food Guide, And The Crisis Over British Food Heritage, 1970-1979, Andrea Broomfield
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper focuses on the status of the Good Food Guide in Britain during a small wave of revived interest among chefs in British regional food in the 1970s, especially under the editorship of Christopher Driver and during a decade when Michelin’s return to Britain and Ireland threatened not only Britain’s recovering sense of its culinary heritage, but also the legitimacy of the Good Food Guide itself. It considers the tiny overlap of restaurants that appeared in both the English Tourist Board’s Taste of England 1978 and the Good Food Guide 1979, and argues that because the Good Food Guide …

Objects Of Wartime Resistance And Food Scarcity, Nathalie Cooke
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper considers closely three missives crafted by individuals suffering life- threatening duress during wartime incarceration, one during World War One, and two during the Second World War. Only one of these three survived beyond wartime. All three examples involve food: messages embroidered on or about the sourcing of daily bread or describing dishes that were available only in memory. Nevertheless, the very act of crafting objects to carry communications beyond the dire circumstances in which these prisoners of war found themselves embodied hope and defiance. While acknowledging and describing the very different contexts of each of these examples, I …

Crisis, Hope And The Headline: Agenda Setting In England’S Covid Food Story, Dayna Brackley
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Panic buying during Covid was a crisis of perception as much as supply. This paper builds on the mixed method content analysis of 209 articles and accompanying images from six high circulation English newspapers, March to July 2020, setting it in the context of calls for civil food resilience and the UK national food strategy. The research shows how the press framed food access, responsibility and risk at a pivotal turning point. Sensationalised language appeared in 89% of articles, 68% carried negative sentiment, and 64% of analysed images showed empty shelves. Supermarkets were the dominant voice, quoted in 62% of …
Narrative Construction In Post-Conflict Society: How Narratives Can Shape Conflict Perpetuation And Reconciliation Possibilities In Syria., Abigail H. Eid
Narrative Construction In Post-Conflict Society: How Narratives Can Shape Conflict Perpetuation And Reconciliation Possibilities In Syria., Abigail H. Eid
Capstone Collection
In December 2024, Syria’s long-standing Assad regime was overthrown, and the country entered a new era of post-conflict reconstruction. This study explores the narratives Syrians in the diaspora are constructing about this regime change and the new era for Syrian society. To do so, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 Syrians in the diaspora of various backgrounds and analyzed using an inductive narrative analysis to see which themes emerged. The findings were further organized to understand how these narratives may contribute to perpetuating conflict or promoting peacebuilding and reconciliation. Based on the analysis, there are four main types of narratives …

Layers Of Representation: A Multidimensional Book Analysis, Mariah Pfundheller, Nikki Logan, Amy E. Lein, Sydney Bueno
Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children
This study evaluates how educators interpret the Multidimensional Framework for Inclusive Literature (MDFIL), a tool for evaluating and selecting multicultural literature for their classrooms. Participants self-identified as current, former/retired, or student teachers, or as undergraduates pursuing a teaching license at the time of the survey. Incorporating multicultural literature into educational settings has a positive impact on children's development. Multicultural literature fosters feelings of acceptance, cultural awareness, and empathy among students. By exposing children to diverse cultural perspectives, multicultural literature not only enhances their understanding of their own identities but also cultivates a greater appreciation of others' experiences. The benefits of …
Where Art Meets The Table: Food, Art, And Culture At The Intersection Of Crisis And Hope, Ciza Zoya
Where Art Meets The Table: Food, Art, And Culture At The Intersection Of Crisis And Hope, Ciza Zoya
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Food is more than sustenance; it is a carrier of memory, identity, and power, shaping both belonging and exclusion. In contemporary art, food has emerged as a critical medium through which these tensions can be explored. This paper argues that food- based art operates at the intersection of crisis and hope, revealing how everyday practices of cooking, sharing, and eating both reflect social hierarchies and create possibilities for connection. Drawing on anthropological perspectives, contemporary art theory, and the author’s own artistic practice, the paper examines how food functions as a social structure shaped by gender, class, caste, and colonial histories. …

“It’S The End Of The World As We Know It” And I Feel Hungry: Food In Dystopian And Utopian Fictional Futures, Deirdre Murphy, Maureen Costura
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
In dystopian fantasy fiction and the more recent subgenre of hopepunk, representations of food—growing and scavenging it, preparing and eating it—reveal distinct but evolving perspectives on the collapse of human societies facing environmental, political, and economic disasters. As we examine these bodies of literature, contrasts abound. There is never enough food in dystopian fantasy. What is available is bland, repetitive, and dubiously nutritious. Trauma around food is ongoing. Scavenging highlights the anxiety of diminishing resources, while consumption is either solitary and lonely, or shared among small and struggling groups where meals only contribute to abiding grief. In all, food insecurity …
Ukraine’S Wine Identity Is Being Shaped By War, Richie Brady, Vasylysa Yilmaz, Victoria Makarova
Ukraine’S Wine Identity Is Being Shaped By War, Richie Brady, Vasylysa Yilmaz, Victoria Makarova
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has inflicted irreparable damage to Ukraine and its wine industry. Wineries have been invaded, occupied, and looted. Facilities have been deliberately destroyed, vineyards mined, and warehouses targeted. Increasingly, details regarding attacks are withheld by winemakers for security reasons. Infrastructural attacks, such as on Odesa’s seaport and electricity power-supplies, have furthered logistical and operational issues. Staffing difficulties have grown as men are drafted into the army or emigrate. Pressure on the industry has also increased as exports have decreased while imports have increased. Yet, Ukrainian wine has been described as thriving and as a metaphor for the …

Dream Pastries Of Despair And Wines Of Optimism: An Analysis Of Food And Drink As Emotive Narrative Devices In Dungeons And Dragons’ Curse Of Strahd, Carina Mansey, Mickey Cripps-Wells, Obie Tanner
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The collaborative fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons has gained heightened popularity in recent years. However, the role of food and drink as narrative devices that shape player emotions has received limited scholarly attention. This paper addresses this gap by examining the official adventure module Curse of Strahd, which guides players through the gothic horror setting of Barovia, a realm within the “Domain of Dread.” In this bleak and nightmarish landscape, players encounter foodstuffs designed to evoke feelings of fear, disgust, and longing, while experiencing fleeting moments of hope through acts of perceived charitable reprieve and symbolic resistance amid …

A European Narrative Of Redemption And Hope In The Wine Sector: Fra I Monti – A Case Study, Francesco D'Ausilio
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The paper focuses on the story of the Fra i Monti winery in Terelle, a small village located in Italy's Comino Valley, in the province of Frosinone, about 110 km southeast of Rome. This is a paradigmatic territory of agricultural Italy, where between the early 1950s and the mid-1970s, industrialisation and urbanisation shaped the figure of the “metal- mezzadro,” half factory worker and half farmer in the fields, leading to the progressive abandonment of the countryside because it did not offer a secure salary and to the relentless disappearance of farming and wine-making traditions. The paper addresses the theme of …

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper is three-fold. The first section enacts a process of “fielding,” generating what might appear as a genealogy of practitioners, but is rather an interdisciplinary collection of precedents, that when drawn into relation, constitute a field—defined by yet redefining each precedent. The field that is drawn into relation here uncovers a compulsion toward planetary healing in the post-war period—a compulsion that appears to have been reactivated today. Each of the practitioners that are touched on have, in some way, whether intentionally or not, played a role in healing our connection to the moment, to ourselves, and to our environments …

Revisiting the siyez case: Can we take a lesson from its exploitation, learn from the Sorgül Wheat Project, and hope for the better in future? Türkiye is home to the earliest varieties of wheat, some of which are still cultivated or grow wild in remote landscapes of Anatolia. Siyez (Triticum monococcum) has been a staple crop for thousands of years. However, over time, other wheat varieties took over, dominating the market with their higher yield. Siyez was no longer considered commercially valuable and was only grown by peasants for their own consumption or as livestock feed. However, a few decades …

In New Mexico, the water law of prior appropriation rules. As a result, no individual holds a complete right to ownership of water in New Mexico. Instead, New Mexico landowners hold only a right to put appropriated waters to beneficial use. Appropriation of waters requires diversion, a distinct feature that prevents landowners from claiming natural watercourses flowing through their property boundaries. The unappropriated waters of the state are then vested in the state via public trust, to be used and enjoyed by the public. This public right to use often abuts landowner property rights, as water flows over and through …

Theorizing Rural Cosmopolitanism: Modern Economic History, Urban Elites, And The Political Economy Of Disaster Recovery, Manuel Montoya
Natural Resources Journal
A heavily understated dimension of cosmopolitanism is the urban rural divide. This is particularly true in the context of modern economics, which emerged at the same time that the notion of cosmopolitanism was gaining renewed political significance. This paper examines how economic thought of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries directly influenced the socio-literary interactions of a “World Republic of Letters” and how writers such as Goethe used terms like “universal spiritual commerce” to valorize the role of the city in the making of a new modern world. The paper also describes how the rural was left behind in …

The Role Of Anticipatory, Preparatory, And Transformative Governance In Wildfire And Watershed Resilience Strategies, Robin Kundis Craig, Melinda Morgan
Natural Resources Journal
Wildfire is a game-changer for both communities and ecosystems throughout the West, including in New Mexico. Building resilience to increasing numbers of wildfire events, especially when wildfires can shift communities, ecosystems, and combined social ecological systems (“SESs”) past tipping points and into new regimes requires new approaches to governance. Focusing on the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon fire and New Mexico residents’ ongoing response, this Article examines post-fire needs before surveying new modes of governance that can help to address those needs in a climate change era. It ends with a summary of our engagement with the participants in the “Life After …

Climate Change, Justice, And Equity In The Adjudication Of Hermit’S Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Claims, Brett Phelps
Natural Resources Journal
Large-scale, climate-driven wildfire has become a recurring and foreseeable feature of life in the American West, creating long-term consequences for forests, watersheds, and rural communities. The 2022 Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, the largest wildfire in New Mexico history, provides an opportunity to examine how a federally created compensation statute functions once a climate disaster moves from legislation and rulemaking into adjudication. Sparked by prescribed burns on public land, the fire led Congress to enact the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act, directing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”) to provide expeditious and just compensation for injuries resulting from the fire. …

Adapting The Hermit’S Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act To Address The Needs Of The Community It Was Meant To Serve, Kieran Raney
Natural Resources Journal
In 2022, New Mexico experienced its worst documented wildfire season on record, and the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire was the largest among them. Over 340,000 acres of Northern New Mexico burned, devastating a multi-generational, subsistence community. In response, Congress passed the Hermit’s Peak Fire Assistance Act, the second-ever act of its kind to provide full and expeditious compensation for wildfire damage. Yet, more than four years later, many community members still have not received any funding and litigation continues over whether the Act is meant to provide noneconomic damages. This Comment outlines the steps of the rulemaking process to argue …
