Environmental And Pharmacological Modulation Of Opioid-Mediated Behavioral Effects In Rats, Corinne Ann Gallagher May 2026

Environmental And Pharmacological Modulation Of Opioid-Mediated Behavioral Effects In Rats, Corinne Ann Gallagher

Theses and Dissertations

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and opioid-associated overdoses continue to pose significant burden to US healthcare systems—both financially and in lives lost. It is imperative to identify risk factors which may predispose vulnerability to OUD development, which could aid in discovery of new therapeutic strategies for susceptible populations. This dissertation investigated the impacts of two such risk factors which modulate opioid-induced reward and behavioral effects: adolescent stress and the adulteration of illicit opioids by xylazine. In Chapter 2, we examined the effects of acute adolescent stress on oxycodone self-administration in rats, and the potential involvement of the locus coeruleus in these …

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Improving Emergency Preparedness: Disaster Response Gap Executive Summary

Universities in Washington State have a responsibility to maintain both educational continuity and campus safety, particularly because of the region’s vulnerability to major earthquakes. Although many institutions maintain emergency preparedness plans, the accessibility and strategic placement of emergency resources remain critical concerns. At a private university in Seattle, Washington, the project team identified gaps in earthquake preparedness related to the accessibility, visibility, and availability of emergency supplies.

This project aimed to develop a practical and achievable proposal for university leadership to strengthen disaster preparedness efforts. The project focused on improving access to …

Academic Freedom's Inflection Point, Jerry C. Edwards May 2026

Academic Freedom's Inflection Point, Jerry C. Edwards

Law Faculty Scholarship

Academic freedom faces an existential crisis. The Trump administration, building on a movement that began in the states, is seeking ideological conquest of higher education. Some universities have already surrendered. Others fight on, facing an endless barrage of assaults on their institutional autonomy. Faculty too have chosen to resist, relying on their free expression rights. One of the most potent weapons in higher education’s arsenal is the constitutional academic freedom doctrine, a First Amendment protection that safeguards faculty’s academic expression and universities’ academic judgments. But the Supreme Court’s embrace of history and tradition as a focal point of its individual …

Emotional Intelligence In Physician Assistant Education: Associations With Success, Burnout And Engagement, Mickey Lebowitz, William H. Holmes

Innovations in Health Sciences Education Journal

Abstract

Background Burnout is prevalent among health care professionals and increasingly recognized among health professions students. Emotional intelligence (EQ) has been associated with reduced burnout among clinicians and learners, but data specific to physician assistant (PA) students remain limited. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of two overlapping cohorts of PA students from the entering classes of 2021-2023. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Inventory (SEI®). Burnout was assessed at the end of the first year using the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey for Students and at the end of the second year using the Maslach Burnout …

Food Insecurity And At-Home Vegetable And Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Availability: Tx Sprouts Randomized Controlled Trial, Keally Haushalter, Shreela V Sharma, Marissa Burgermaster, Natalie S Poulos, Erin A Hudson, Jennifer M Daspin, Mariela Jimenez Rivero, Jaimie N Davis

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages both influence dietary intake. However, most research on food insecurity and the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages is cross-sectional, which is problematic as both change frequently. Therefore, this study assessed how changes in food insecurity were associated with changes in the at-home availability of vegetables and sugar-sweetened beverages among those in the intervention and control groups of TX Sprouts. Parents who participated in TX Sprouts, a gardening, cooking, and nutrition cluster-randomized trial conducted with primarily Hispanic, low-income 3rd-5th-grade students, completed surveys at baseline and at the nine-month …

Investigating The Moderating Roles Of Adolescent Peer Relationship Difficulties And Prosocial Behavior On The Relationship Between Triangulation And Adolescent Emotional Symptoms During Parental Divorce, Taylor Kalei Demotta May 2026

Investigating The Moderating Roles Of Adolescent Peer Relationship Difficulties And Prosocial Behavior On The Relationship Between Triangulation And Adolescent Emotional Symptoms During Parental Divorce, Taylor Kalei Demotta

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

The divorce process is a stressful, transitional period that is widely experienced by families in the United States. This process incites a variety of stressors and deleterious family dynamics that impact children and adolescents. The divorce literature has identified parental conflict as a significant contributor to youth outcomes following divorce. Therefore, researchers have aimed to investigate the specific dynamics occurring during interparental discord that may influence youth. Triangulation, or the involvement of children in parental disagreements, has been found to mediate the relationship between parental conflict and adolescents’ internalizing symptoms. Adolescents may be particularly vulnerable to triangulation due to increases …

The Persistence Of Mindfulness Training: Grit As An Indicator Of Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Andrew J. Hylen May 2026

The Persistence Of Mindfulness Training: Grit As An Indicator Of Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Andrew J. Hylen

Masters Projects

Finding ways for collegiate student-athletes to improve and manage mental health can boost persistence and retention rates athletically and academically (Credé et al., 2017; Mohebi et al., 2021). Providing mental health resources is not enough to support student-athletes because of mental health stigma and the fear of losing playing time from accepting help for physical or mental injury (Criticos et al., 2020; Sheffield & Stutts, 2020). Implementing sports team mindfulness-based mental health interventions for collegiate student-athletes can improve student-athletes’ overall well-being (Augustus et al., 2023; O’Brien & Kilrea, 2021). Additionally, utilizing grit theory as a predictive measure of one’s passion …

A New Visual Index For Assessing Zooplankton Biomass And Its Utility In Assessing Prey Availability For Megaplanktivores’, Hannah Moloney, Asia O. Armstrong, Guy M.W. Stevens, Christine L. Dudgeon, Joanna Harris, Kathy A. Townsend, Anthony J. Richardson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Zooplankton are vital links in marine food webs, yet their biomass remains challenging to quantify across broad spatial and temporal scales. This study introduces the Zooplankton Visual Index–a simple, rapid and scalable semi-quantitative method for evaluating zooplankton biomassthrough underwater observations. Following the establishment of a standardized protocol, validation against in situ net samples demonstratedthat indexlevels increased consistently with measured biomass and predictable shifts in community composition. We then applied the validatedindexto a 9-year dataset of reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) sightings in the Maldives. Increased M. alfredi abundance significantly correlated withhigher index levels, confirming that the index effectively captures the food …

All UNH Survey Center Polls

With the Maine primary only two weeks away, Graham Platner holds a dominant lead in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate following the withdrawal of Governor Janet Mills. Platner leads incumbent Republican Susan Collins in a general election matchup. Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah are tied in the race for the Democratic nomination for governor. On the Republican side, Robert Charles leads the field, followed by Jonathan Bush. No clear frontrunner has emerged in the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Maine's Second Congressional District, while most likely Republican voters are undecided on a GOP nominee for …

Crime, Economic Forces And Trucks Crossings In The Us–Mexico Border Region, René Cabral, André Varella Mollick, Eduardo Saucedo May 2026

Crime, Economic Forces And Trucks Crossings In The Us–Mexico Border Region, René Cabral, André Varella Mollick, Eduardo Saucedo

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We investigate northbound loaded truck crossings from Mexico to the United States between 2015 and 2023. A weaker peso, exports and US industrial production positively affect loaded containers. Truck robberies at the municipal level show no statistically significant relationship with truck loadings, whereas truck robberies at the national and state levels present a negative, persistent association. Results suggest that Mexico–US trade would benefit from lower average Mexican crime rates. In addition to comparing Texas with other border states, this study documents the role of crime specific to the transportation sector as a negative relevant driver of truck crossings to the …

Importance: Climate change may reverse decades of improvements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in the US; however, comprehensive regional projections of heat-related CVD burden in the US are unavailable. Objective: To use the county-level observed (2010-2016) heat-related CVD burden in the US to obtain the projected rates through 2050 according to the mean (shared socioeconomic pathway [SSP] 2-4.5) and high (SSP5-8.5) greenhouse gas (GHG) emission pathways. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional ecological analysis used county-level summary data including all counties in the contiguous US from 2010 through 2016 as baseline data with projections to 2030 and 2050 under SSP …

A Faith And Technology Resource Hub: Building The Christian Engineer’S Bookshelf, Gayle Ermer, Derek Schuurman

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

A wealth of material related to the interactions between faith and technology has been generated over time to help Christian engineers reflect on and evaluate their work and technology development more generally. However, there is currently no central location where this large variety of resources can easily be accessed. This paper will describe the process of developing a faith and technology resource hub. The vision for the hub is that it will include a comprehensive searchable directory of resources addressing faith and technology, as well as a browsable, organized, curated, and annotated set of webpages containing links to particularly important …
