Distilled Intelligence At The Edge: An Iot-Driven Deep Learning Architecture For Plant Health Assessment, Malek Garrach May 2026

Distilled Intelligence At The Edge: An Iot-Driven Deep Learning Architecture For Plant Health Assessment, Malek Garrach

Masters Theses

This project addresses the challenge of image classification for specific plants in indoor farming environments. With a limited dataset, selecting an efficient and cost-effective model becomes crucial.

The traditional approach of using cloud services for model storage and image processing is not only expensive but also inefficient for this use case, especially when considering the continuous flow of data generated by cameras in indoor farming settings. Cloud-based solutions incur high operational costs, which is not ideal for resource-constrained environments. To overcome these limitations and provide a more economical alternative, we propose the use of IoT devices, specifically Raspberry Pi units, …

A Compelling Romance, Kayleigh Kearsley May 2026

A Compelling Romance, Kayleigh Kearsley

Curiosity

One of William Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedies, Much Ado About Nothing, tells the story of two individuals, Claudio and Hero, who quickly fall in love and plan to marry. However, due to another’s nefarious acts, Claudio believes that Hero is unfaithful. He cruelly and publicly shames her at their wedding, leading to her faking her death. In the end, it is revealed that Hero is both innocent and alive, and a double marriage becomes the play’s finale. Though this romance seems to be the focal point of the play, a close reading reveals that the romance between two supporting …

What’S In A Name? Much Ado About “War-Sustaining” Objects, W. Casey Biggerstaff May 2026

What’S In A Name? Much Ado About “War-Sustaining” Objects, W. Casey Biggerstaff

International Law Studies

Recent conflicts have renewed the long-running debate over the legality of attacking economic objects under the law of armed conflict. Within that discourse, observers frequently frame the controversy in relation to an abstract U.S. “war-sustaining” position. Critics often characterize the United States as advancing a distinctive and overly permissive interpretation of military objectives that allegedly departs from the targeting criteria set forth in Article 52(2) of Additional Protocol I. This article challenges that characterization. It concludes that the United States does not apply a separate “war-sustaining” lex specialis to economic objects. Rather, U.S. practice reflects a contextual application of Article …

Crisis Severity In Sportswashing: Examining The Effects On Host Nations, Erika J. Schneider, Courtney D. Boman, Mutaz M.. Barnawi, Kenon A. Brown

Media Studies - All Scholarship

This study examines how the men’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, marked by allegations of labor abuses, influenced U.S. viewers’ perceptions of the host nation through the lens of “sportswashing.” Utilizing a survey of self-identified U.S. viewers of the World Cup, the analysis examines how viewers’ personal involvement and recognition of human rights concerns influenced their perceptions of the crisis’s severity. Findings show that recognition of the problem, by viewers themselves, significantly increased perceptions of severity, while involvement with the issue of human rights did not have a direct effect on severity perceptions. Higher perceptions of severity, in turn, …

Motherhood Within The Patriarchal Family: Reconstructing Feminism Through "Frankenstein", Yasamin Osqueezadeh May 2026

Motherhood Within The Patriarchal Family: Reconstructing Feminism Through "Frankenstein", Yasamin Osqueezadeh

Curiosity

In 1792, pioneering English feminist Mary Wollstonecraft published “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,” arguing that women’s rights could only advance if women moved into the male-dominated public sphere, leaving behind household-centered education, traditional marriage structures, and the nuclear family dynamic. In 1818, Wollstonecraft’s daughter Mary Shelley published “Frankenstein,” in which she explored and critiqued women’s permanent and unacknowledged status as caretakers within their households. Whereas Wollstonecraft aimed to dismantle marriage completely, Shelley simultaneously argued to preserve the notion of family and marriage while also reconstructing the gender roles within those dynamics. Through the lack of female representation from …

Effects Of Uv Exposure On Fecundity, Survival, And Performance Of A Stored Grain Pest, Callosobruchus Maculatus, Colby Christensen, Fielding Mumford, Spencer Brinton, Anna Goates, Md Mirajul Islam

Curiosity

Seed beetles (Callosobruchus maculatus) are a pest of stored leguminous grains that can dramatically decrease yields. Management strategies to control infestations of C. maculatus are important for economic and food security. Radiation exposure is one possible management strategy that has shown promise. In two separate course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), we tested how exposure to UV-C light affects C. maculatus fecundity, survival, and performance. Callosobruchus maculatus individuals were exposed to UV-C at two different life-stages: parent and egg exposure during oviposition and larval exposure during development. Whereas UV exposed two-week old eggs experienced slightly increased mortality, no significant …

Risk Of Malignancy With Immunosuppressive Drugs Used In Organ Transplants Compared To Those Used For Non-Transplant Indications, Connor Haines, Zachary Walton, Ian Curnutt, George Golovko, Yong-Fang Kuo, Cristiana Rastellini, Luca Cicalese

Student Publications

Background: Immunosuppressive drugs (ISDs) are essential for preventing organ rejection but have been reported to increase cancer risk with prolonged use. This study compares cancer risk between ISDs used for long-term maintenance after transplantation (T-ISDs) and those prescribed for non-transplant chronic conditions including cell-mediated (C-ISDs) and receptor-mediated (R-ISDs) ISDs. We hypothesized that cancer risk would differ between T-ISDs and both C-ISD and R-ISD groups. Methods: Using the TriNetX database, solid organ transplant recipients treated with tacrolimus (TAC), cyclosporine (CY), rapamycin (RAPA), or mycophenolate (MMF) were compared to propensity-matched R-ISDs (adalimumab, infliximab, etc.) or C-ISDs (methotrexate, azathioprine, etc.) for at least …

IntroductionOsteosarcomas comprise a heterogeneous group of malignant osteogenic tumours with histopathological, biological and clinical variability. The scientific evidence underpinning different osteosarcoma types varies considerably. The WHO Classification of Tumours (WCT) provides an international standard for tumour classification based on evidence, although published evidence varies in both quantity and quality. Given the implications of osteosarcoma tumour classification for diagnosis, grading and treatment, a systematic overview of the distribution of the evidence is required. This study aimed to map the available evidence for osteosarcoma tumour types to inform the WCT.MethodsAn evidence gap map (EGM) was developed following methodologies adapted from the Campbell …

Context-Aware Vulnerability Scoring For Dubai Immigration Systems: Enhancing Cvss With Exposure And Asset Risk Factors, Saeed Adnan Saeed Alkhatibi Alsuwaidi

Theses

This paper explores the drawbacks of Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) usage in case of mission critical government infrastructures with special attention to Dubai Immigration systems. Even though the widely used tool against evaluating the severity of technical vulnerability is the CVSS, it fails to consider the organisational factors like the exposure of the asset, the criticality of the system, the number of users and the sensitivity of data. Such contextual blindness may contribute to prioritisation being off-kilter and ineffective resource assignment in high-risk and highly sensitive settings. The researchers systematically analyse the potential to incorporate contextual features in CVSS …

Functional MRI (fMRI) data are severely distorted by magnetic field (B0) inhomogeneities, which currently must be corrected using separately acquired field map data. However, changes in the head position of a participant across fMRI frames cause changes in the B0 field, preventing accurate correction of geometric distortions. Movement during field map acquisitions corrupts field maps, preventing distortion correction altogether. In this study, we use multi-echo (ME) fMRI data to dynamically sample and correct for magnetic field image distortions caused by head motion. Our distortion correction pipeline, MEDIC (Multi-Echo DIstortion Correction), leverages magnetic field inhomogeneity information found in the difference between …

Experimental Evaluation Of Walking Stability Of Bilateral Transtibial Prosthetic User: A Case Study, Mustafa Sharaf Jaian, Mahmud Rasheed Ismail

AUIQ Technical Engineering Science

Bilateral transtibial amputation presents a complex biomechanical condition in which the loss of biological ankle function and reduced sensory feedback can compromise walking stability. This case study aimed to experimentally evaluate gait stability in a bilateral transtibial prosthesis user under controlled sensory and mechanical walking conditions using a portable G-Walk inertial measurement system. The novelty of this study lies in the use of a structured three-factor experimental protocol that systematically combined visual input, arm posture, and surface type across twelve walking conditions to assess walk quality, propulsion, propulsion symmetry, and pelvic symmetry indices. The participant was a 31-year-old bilateral transtibial …
