Climate-Driven Stochastic Modelling Of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever Transmission In Uganda, P. G. Kpatchana, J. Aduda, K. M. Agboka
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a climate-sensitive tick-borne zoonosis that remains a significant public health concern in Uganda, where temperature and vapour pressure deficit influence tick ecology and consequently disease transmission. This study aimed to develop and analyse a climate-driven stochastic model for CCHF transmission among ticks, livestock, and humans under environmental variability in Uganda. A compartmental transmission model was formulated and extended into a stochastic differential equation framework by incorporating multiplicative environmental noise. Climate-dependent tick recruitment, development, and mortality were parameterized using district-level temperature and vapour pressure deficit data to capture spatial heterogeneity in transmission risk. Theoretical analyses based …

Violencia Cosificadora Contra Las Mujeres En La Era De La Ia Generativa: Sesgos, Poder Y Deshumanización Digital, Norma Mildret Pérez Alvarado
GDI.

Despite improvements in life expectancy, people with HIV (PWH) are at risk of developing HIV-associated comorbidities at a younger age when compared to HIV-uninfected individuals. This premature aging process can be attributed to various factors, such as the prolonged exposure to combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), inflammation, microbial perturbances and oxidative stress. Similarly to the gut, oral dysbiosis occurs in HIV-1 infection, with cART and inflammation playing a crucial role. This gives rise to an enrichment of pathogenic microorganisms that in turn, elicit an immune response tied to chronic inflammation. Consequently, cART exposure, dysbiosis and persistent inflammation in HIV-1 infection have …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs is one of the critical challenges in the oil industry due to the strongly oil-wet nature, natural fractures, and the heterogeneity of carbonate rocks. Subsequently, waterflooding can only displace oil from large fractures, leaving the majority of oil trapped in the rock matrix. This work suggests that nanofluid flooding, as a predesigned flooding method, is an alternative to conventional waterflooding. Various concentrations of silica nanofluid at different nanoparticle concentrations were formulated and systematically investigated for their characteristics, stability at reservoir conditions, and their influence on wettability and oil recovery. Silica nanoparticles were sustainably synthesized from …

Rvit-Fusionnet: A Local Cross-Attention Feature Fusion-Based Hybrid Framework For Brain Tumor Classification, Naima Islam, Sajeeb Kumar Ray, Md Anwar Hossain, Syed Mohammed Shamsul Islam
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Accurate brain tumor classification via MRI is essential for diagnosis and treatment. This study introduces RViT-FusionNet, a hybrid deep learning model that integrates convolutional and transformer architectures for enhanced tumor detection. The model utilizes ResNet-50 to capture textural details and a Vision Transformer for extracting global context. A Local Cross-Attention (LCA) module is proposed to align and merge these features, allowing the network to model local structures and long-range dependencies concurrently. To enhance generalization across varied imaging conditions and tumor types, a domain discriminator is included to discern spatial and domain-specific patterns, fostering the learning of domain-invariant representations. The approach …

An Integrated Analytics Model For Evaluating Strategic Investments Under Volatile Conditions, Atul Chandra, R. Hartley
An Integrated Analytics Model For Evaluating Strategic Investments Under Volatile Conditions, Atul Chandra, R. Hartley
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Strategic projects are exposed to multiple uncertainties within a competitive environment that result in trade-off between two decisions, early investment that pre-empts competitors versus delay to allow resolution of uncertainties. Unlike the binary net present value (NPV) based decision to invest or abandon now, our multiple volatility real option games approach (MVR games) frames strategic investment decisions as a dynamic process for future options. It is a decision tree framework that computes and analyses strategic net present value (SNPV) using four MVR games modules and decision making. SNPV combines NPV with two offsetting real option and strategic values. Real option …

Research topics involving sex, sexuality or sexual content online including pornography, are often considered sensitive or contentious. These topics can evoke strong attitudes, values, beliefs, biases, and potential prejudices from researchers themselves. As such, it is ethically imperative to identify and critically examine one's own perspectives in relation to the research on such topics to ensure transparency, acknowledge the researcher's positionality, and prioritise participant perspectives. Reflexivity offers a valuable way to sustain critical reflection and engage with one's own position and assumptions towards the topic in question. This paper offer a vulnerable exploration and reflection on the reflexive process within …

Centring Girls In Water Justice Research And Social Movements, Cecilia Chitukula, Wrigley, Julie Nyanjom, Naomi Joy Godden
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Scholars and activists focused on water justice in the Global South are increasingly embracing collaborative methods. These methods include community-centred research, public engagement in water management, and participatory interventions aimed at addressing the crisis of fresh and clean water access in both urban and rural localities. This represents a shift from state-led water management that is top-down, technocentric, and privatised, towards just and equitable water solutions which are informed by the needs of community members. In patriarchal societies of the Global South, girls are disproportionately affected by the water crisis, as they are tasked with water searching and fetching responsibilities …

Precision Nutrition In Breast Cancer: Towards Patient- And Tumour-Informed Dietary Strategies, Cristina Crespo-García, R. Taaffe, Carolyn Peddle-Mcintyre, Emily Jeffery, John P. Campbell, Robert Thomas, Daniel A. Galvao, Robert U. Newton
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Dietary strategies are increasingly recognized as important modulators of breast cancer outcomes, acting through effects on metabolic regulation, weight management, hormone signalling, immune function, and the gut microbiome. However, breast cancer heterogeneity and inter-individual variability mean that generic dietary guidelines may not fully capture patient needs. Precision nutrition offers the opportunity to align dietary interventions with tumour subtype, treatment context, and host biology, potentially enhancing therapeutic response and survivorship in patients diagnosed with breast cancer. In this narrative review, we summarize evidence on dietary patterns and prognosis, and explore how targeted interventions, including fasting regimens, ketogenic diets, and caloric restriction, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Understanding how bones adapt during growth is essential for promoting lifelong skeletal health. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is a widely used imaging technique for assessing volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) in pediatric populations; however, conventional methods may obscure subtle cortical adaptations. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of shape-based cortical vBMD profiling, with an exploratory objective of assessing its sensitivity to inter-individual variation in lean mass index (LMI). Methods: Eighteen children (6–12 years) underwent pQCT scanning at the 38% and 66% tibial sites (distal and proximal diaphysis). Cortical vBMD was quantified across three …
A Novel Multi−Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework For Fast Frequency Response In Inverter−Based Hybrid Power Plants, Muhammad Ikram, Asma Aziz, Daryoush Habibi
A Novel Multi−Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework For Fast Frequency Response In Inverter−Based Hybrid Power Plants, Muhammad Ikram, Asma Aziz, Daryoush Habibi
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The increasing penetration of inverter−based resources (IBR) in power grids necessitates novel control techniques to deliver advanced ancillary services such as fast frequency response (FFR), crucial for ensuring power system stability. Existing schemes−droop control, virtual synchronous generator (VSG), and hybrid approaches−require full observability, and centralized control, which are unsuitable for utility−scale hybrid power plant (HPP) with a distributed grid−forming inverter (GFMI). In addition, it lacks adaptive control capabilities in response to real−time disturbances according to the IEEE 2800−2022 standard. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a design of a novel multi−agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) framework for utility−scale IBR−dominated …
Queuing Uncertainty Of Limit Orders, Bart Yueshen Zhou
Queuing Uncertainty Of Limit Orders, Bart Yueshen Zhou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Limit orders submitted around the same time are subject to random latencies and will be queued accordingly. In equilibrium, end-of-queue limit orders always lose money—the liquidity supply appears excessive. The model generates empirical predictions regarding such “overshooting” liquidity: (i) new limit orders appear fleeting—clustered submissions are followed by immediate cancellations, (ii) the resulting cancel-to-add count ratio reflects adverse selection, and (iii) the cancel-to-add size ratio measures high-frequency market-making activity. Welfare can be hurt by the overshooting liquidity if it induces excessive speculation. Overall, the model contributes to a more comprehensive understanding and better utilization of order book data.
Synergies Of Microecology And Macroecology Elicit Insights For Creation Care, David Warners, John T. Wertz
Synergies Of Microecology And Macroecology Elicit Insights For Creation Care, David Warners, John T. Wertz
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This article reports on a collection of microecological and macroecological insights that emerged from extended conversations between Calvin University professors David Warners, a botanist concentrating in restoration ecology, and John Wertz, a micro-biologist specializing in microbial ecology. Classic descriptions of ecology identify biological interactions as happening at the ecosystem, community, or population level. And yet, ecological interactions are very much occurring at the microbial level as well. Furthermore, microbial-level interactions frequently influence the quality and character of macroecological relationships and vice versa. Allowing ecological principles to be applied across all life forms broadens our comprehension of interactions that are happening …

What would it look like to flee oppression and violence if you could not get very far away? Although enslaved people’s fugitivity in the United States is often understood through the story of complete escape, there were many more enslaved people who fled within slave states. This article defines liminal fugitivity as a type of flight in which enslaved people fled to peripheral spaces near sites of enslavement, such as crawl spaces, edges of forests, or borders of towns and plantations. It reads Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl as an illustration of liminal fugitivity. Jacobs …

During contests over resources, the intensity of fighting and the outcome is often influenced by an interaction between the difference between opponents in the fighting abilities (resource holding potential [RHP]) and the difference in how they subjectively value the resource. Additionally, because fighting can involve vigorous activity, engaging in a fight can make the opponents more noticeable to predators. Thus, predation risk, alongside resource value (RV), may interact with the effects of RHP difference. During hermit crab contests over the ownership of empty gastropod shells attackers perform vigorous shell rapping, whereas defenders adopt a protective posture inside their shells. This …

C*-Extreme Quantum Instruments; Completion And Disintegration Of Completely Positive Maps, Arghya Chongdar
Doctoral Theses
This thesis develops a comprehensive operator-algebraic framework for the study of completely positive (CP) instruments, with contributions spanning convexity theory, integration theory, completion problems, and disintegration theory. We begin by laying the foundational groundwork in the theory of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, introducing key structures such as CP maps, positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), and CP instruments, along with their dilation-theoretic properties. Pure and decomposable instruments are characterized via minimal bi-dilations, and CP instruments are realized as bivariate maps, providing a rigorous quantum analogue of classical joint measures. The thesis then investigates convexity-theoretic aspects of instruments. A structural characterization of …
