Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli
Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli
Theses
This thesis studies the numerical approximation of nonlinear time-fractional partial differential equations using fractional Bernstein polynomials. The main model considered is the nonlinear time-fractional foam drainage equation, in which the classical time derivative is replaced by the Caputo fractional derivative. This formulation introduces memory effects into the model and allows the present drainage behavior to depend on the previous evolution of the liquid fraction.
The proposed method approximates the solution by a finite expansion of fractional Bernstein basis functions. After substituting this approximation into the governing equation, the residual is expanded in powers of t . The unknown coefficient …

La Maleta Siempre Lista: Libertad, Identidad Y Legado Político Dentro De Una Familia Cubanoamericana, Aidan H. Jammer
World Languages and Cultures
This project explores how memories of the Cuban Exile are transmitted through generations and how these memories can influence a Cuban American family’s cultural identity and political beliefs. The documentary was based around interviews with members of my family from different generations. My investigation was mainly centered around the generation that lived through the Cuban Revolution and Exile, immigrated to the US and started a family in another country, sharing their memories, values and beliefs of Cuba with their children and grandchildren.
In addition to the interviews, the project incorporates historical research about the Cuban Revolution, the first waves of …

Assessing Aflatoxin Knowledge, Perceptions, And Related Practices, In A Rural Coastal Community: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Survey, Rosebella Iseme, Joseph Abuodha, Anthony Ngugi, Innocent Abayo, Mansoor Saleh
Population Health, East Africa
Background
Aflatoxin contamination is a significant yet under-addressed food safety challenge in low-resource settings, driven by a complex interplay of environmental, agricultural, and socio-economic factors. Limited access to agricultural inputs, inadequate post-harvest handling and storage, and weak regulatory enforcement alongside food scarcity and climate change heighten the risk of contamination and exposure. Human exposure is associated with serious health consequences, including hepatocellular carcinoma, immune suppression, and childhood stunting. Although aflatoxin is increasingly recognized as a global food safety concern, little is known about community-level knowledge, risk perceptions, and preventive practices. This study examined household heads’ awareness, perceptions, and behaviours related …

Satellite-Derived Longitudinal Evidence Of Flood Effects On Community Water And Sanitation Resilience In Coastal Kenya, Felix Oluoch, Rosebella Iseme, Fredrick Gudda, Alfred Keter, Rachel Odhiambo, Jai Das, Zulfiqar Bhutta, Anthony Ngugi
Population Health, East Africa
Background Flooding can disrupt water, sanitation and hygiene services in low-income rural and peri-urban settings, yet there is limited quantitative evidence on how repeated flood exposure affects safe water and sanitation over time at the level of Community Health Units (CHUs), which are the operational units for primary health care in Kenya.
Methods We analysed repeated CHU-level data from ten Community Health Units in Kilifi County, Kenya, across eleven surveillance rounds from 2017 to 2024. For each round, we calculated the percentage of households with safe drinking water and with access to a functional latrine, and linked these outcomes to …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied to biomedical research, but most current systems remain limited to specific tasks, data types, or biological scales. This makes it difficult to connect molecular alterations, organelle dysfunction, cellular behavior, tissue remodeling, organ physiology, systemic regulation, and whole-body phenotypes into coherent biological reasoning. In this Perspective, we propose the Full-Body AI Agent as a hypothetical multi-agent framework and conceptual blueprint for future systemic biology and precision medicine, rather than a fully implemented software platform. This framework envisions a supervisory Full-Body AI Agent coordinating seven biological-level agents, namely Molecule, Organelle, Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, and …

Ldm-Morph: Latent Diffusion Model Guided Deformable Image Registration, Jiong Wu, Tinsu Pan, Kuang Gong
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Deformable image registration plays an essential role in various medical image tasks. Existing deep learning-based deformable registration frameworks primarily utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or Transformers to learn features to predict the deformations. However, the lack of semantic information in the learned features limits the registration performance. Furthermore, the similarity metric of the loss function is often evaluated only in the pixel space, which ignores the matching of high-level anatomical features and can lead to deformation folding. To address these issues, in this work, we proposed LDM-Morph, an unsupervised deformable registration algorithm for medical image registration. LDM-Morph integrated features extracted …

BACKGROUND: Recruitment for clinical research in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is difficult, which may lead to low enrollment rates, systematically skewed samples, and nongeneralizable results. Research without prior consent (RWPC), defined as obtaining consent only after infants have been randomized to a treatment arm, may improve enrollment but raises ethical challenges. There is a need to better understand how parents with lived experience of having an infant in the NICU consider RWPC’s impact on critical ethical values related to informed consent, including decision-making, respect, and trust. This mixed-methods study aimed to describe parental perceptions of the acceptability and …

Importance: Current lung cancer guidelines recommend lymph node sampling (LNS) with the 3 + 1 rule, which recommends station-based sampling with at least 3 N2 (mediastinal) and 1 N1 (hilar) nodal stations. Although there is oncologic benefit to rigorous LNS, potential negative impacts on surgical outcomes have not been well investigated. As adoption of the 3 + 1 rule increases given its formalization as guideline-concordant care, associations with adverse outcomes are crucial to characterize.
Objective: To evaluate whether satisfying the 3 + 1 rule is associated with increased postoperative complications.
Design, setting, and participants: This retrospective cohort study used the …

Bacteria, part of the three domains of life (Eukarya, Archaea, and Bacteria), are constantly exposed to man-made electromagnetic fields, which often exceed the intensity of natural electromagnetic sources. In response to this exposure, bacteria have developed various defensive and resistant traits. This article presents an overview of both historical and recent research on how bacteria adapt to common sources of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF). The widespread use of mobile phones and Wi-Fi, both utilizing Radiofrequency (RF) radiation, raises potential public health concerns, which have been addressed by international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO). Understanding how bacteria adapt to …

The External Influence Of International Business Scholarship: Growth, Stabilization, Or Decline?, Gokhan Ertug, Andrew Delios, Yi Li, Zhengchu Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The influence of international business (IB) scholarship is an active debate (e.g., Bello & Kostova, 2012; Cantwell et al., 2014, 2016; Doh et al., 2023; Tung et al., 2023). Although IB research has expanded in the number of publications, in its sophistication of research design, and in its thematic breadth over the past decades, questions remain regarding its influence beyond the core ecosystem of IB journals. Anecdotally, a pessimistic view has become more commonplace. The concern is that IB has become increasingly self-referential, relying more heavily on IB-related theory extensions and context-specific settings, which could limit its resonance in the …

Settlement Manipulation In Prediction Markets, David Dai, Ruizhe Jia, Shihao Yu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Prediction markets increasingly list contracts settling on an asset price that holders can move by trading the underlying. We build a model showing that such contracts transfer wealth from prediction-market liquidity traders to manipulators and harm price discovery in the underlying, even as it becomes more liquid. After the launch of Polymarket's five-minute Bitcoin contract, settlement-time spot order flow spikes, causing large price reversals after settlement. Manipulators capture a large amount of profit, mostly from retail. Manipulation is largely absent in the fifteen-minute contracts: lengthening the contract horizon removes it, providing the market-design remedy our model and evidence support.

The evaluation of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) Written Reports Alternative Project (WRAP) pilot revealed that Oral and Alternative Reporting (OAR) options offer a practical, values-aligned pathway to equitable, trust-based reporting that reduces burden while improving usefulness with a pathway to scale.
WRAP participants reported strengthened relationships and two-way learning, especially when conversations complemented or replaced written materials.
Recommendations for others considering OAR include: offer and codify choice, center questions that matter, design technology to support multiple formats, compensate grantee time for evaluation or additional learning-related asks, and train staff for relational learning.
RWJF’s experience demonstrates how reporting can be …

Journey To Tenure And Promotion: Lived Experiences Of Black Women In Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Rosalind L. Williams Lewis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study affirms what Black feminist thought, intersectionality, and critical race theory have long suggested: Black women in academia face complex, systemic barriers but continue to rise with remarkable strength, resilience, and grace. Even in historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), spaces assumed to be nurturing, these women encounter racialized and gendered adversity. Literature has shown that Black women are by far the most educated group, but face challenges ascending into leadership and tenured roles on HBCU campuses. However, Black women in higher education have made great strides despite these challenges. The researcher conducted this phenomenological qualitative study to understand …

Unpacking Assumptions: What Evaluation Capacity Building Looks Like When It’S Optional, Flexible, And Funded, Jennifer Marsack, Martena Reed, Robiel Abraha, Abby Triño, Sara Jones, Brita Blesi
The Foundation Review
Evaluation capacity building (ECB) in the philanthropic sector is often designed around a common set of assumptions: organizations need to be directed toward “correct” evaluation practices, compliance is the primary motivator for engagement, and funder-defined metrics are the most appropriate measure of success. This article challenges these assumptions by sharing insights from a multi-year ECB initiative funded by Houston Endowment called Harnessing the Power of Data.
Drawing on surveys, interviews, and program participation data, the authors explore how co-creating learning goals in a strengths-based structure shifts the evaluation culture of an organization. Key lessons include: (1) how flexibility and alignment …

From Framework To Practice: Insights About Aligning Foundation Impact And Strategic Positioning In A Trust-Based Philanthropy Era, Nancy Pole, Marie-Andrée Mbengue-Reiver, Anne Loranger-King
The Foundation Review
This article examines how a framework revealing foundations’ distinct orientations towards social impact has been used in practice, illustrating the tool’s utility and areas for refinement through one foundation’s experience.
Originally developed for Quebec’s philanthropic ecosystem, the heuristic positions foundations along two continua: strategic posture (problem-solving versus communitysupporting) and impact focus (grantee outcomes versus foundation outcomes), creating four impact orientation quadrants.
The case reveals productive tensions when different parts of a foundation occupy different quadrants. They are particularly acute for public foundations accountable simultaneously to donors, grantees, government funders, and communities.
These insights inform future framework iterations with a view …

Paying For Participation: Equitable Compensation Models For Community Co-Researchers, Jamie Zimmerman, Prabhneet Girn
The Foundation Review
Community-engaged research is increasingly central to philanthropic practice, yet funders rarely provide guidance for compensating community members who participate as co-researchers. This gap is especially pronounced for youth, who often face administrative, legal, and developmental constraints that complicate what “fair pay” looks like in practice.
This article presents findings from a mixed-methods comparative case study of three youth participatory action-research projects involving 44 youth ages 16–24 across varied organizational settings. Data were collected through youth surveys, focus groups, staff interviews, financial analysis, and document review.
Findings show that each model carries distinct trade-offs related to feasibility, transparency, and administrative capacity, …
