"Does The Penis Lie?": Truth, Sexuality, And Psychocarceral Power, Erin Mcqueary Jun 2026

"Does The Penis Lie?": Truth, Sexuality, And Psychocarceral Power, Erin Mcqueary

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis critically examines the use of penile plethysmography (PPG), or phallometry, in the treatment and management of sex offenders in the late-twentieth century. Using the Florida Mental Health Institute’s 1986-1989 sex offender treatment program as a case study, it asks how phallometry came to be understood as an objective method for uncovering otherwise hidden sexual truths. Instead of focusing only on its appearance and development throughout the second half of the twentieth century, this thesis draws on the work of Michel Foucault to situate phallometric science within a broader history of sexuality and biopower. In doing so, it argues …

Effects Of Workplace Hazing On The Anticipated Outcomes For Newly Hired Employees: An Integrative Review Of Existing Literature, Samuel Bangura

Management Dynamics

This study analyzes the effect of workplace hazing on newly hired employees by synthesizing existing studies, with a focus on psychological well-being, job performance, and organizational outcomes. Additionally, it identifies strategies to mitigate the negative effects of workplace hazing during the onboarding process.

Background:

Workplace hazing is a pervasive yet underexamined organizational phenomenon that affects newly hired employees. Although justified as a socialization or initiation practice, emerging evidence suggests that hazing can have serious psychological, professional, and organizational consequences. Existing literature remains fragmented, with limited integrative synthesis focusing specifically on newcomers’ anticipated outcomes.

Objective:

This study aims to examine the …

Patent Ductus Arteriosus Spasm During Percutaneous Device Occlusion In Infants And Children, Hani M. Adel, Ashraf K. Mahmoud

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Background: Spasm of ductus arteriosus is an uncommon but significant phenomenon associated with transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion. It can lead to procedural failure, improper device sizing, or even embolization of the occluder device as the spasm subsides post-procedure. Aim of this study is to report the frequency, features, management and outcome of PDA spasm during device closure in a single Egyptian center.

Patients and methods: Over about 3 years, 200 infants and children underwent percutaneous device occlusion. The echocardiographic and catheterization data of patients who developed spasm of PDA before or during or shortly after anesthesia …

K4) Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage Inscription: End Of The Road Or A New Beginning?, Michał Duda, Bogdan Włodarczyk, Marzena Makowska-Iskierka

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

The aim of paper is to examine the changes triggered by the inscription of religious traditions on intangible cultural heritage lists - the national level and at the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Such inscriptions generate transformations observable at heritage sites, among communities safeguarding these traditions, and in the behaviours of visitors - phenomena referred to as the “UNESCO effect.” These changes often extend beyond individual sites, inspiring other communities and heritage bearers to seek heritage recognition.

The paper focuses on religious cultural heritage associated with the tradition of creating floral carpets for the Feast of Corpus Christi in Spycimierz, …

Why Not Pachucos? Mexican Americans, Hollywood, And The Impact Of Sleepy Lagoon In The 1940s And 1950s, Krystal Catalina Ledesma Jun 2026

Why Not Pachucos? Mexican Americans, Hollywood, And The Impact Of Sleepy Lagoon In The 1940s And 1950s, Krystal Catalina Ledesma

Journal of 20th Century Media History

The unsolved murder of a young Mexican American on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1942—commonly known as the Sleepy Lagoon Murder—came at a pivotal time in Mexican American history. The consequent arrests, unjust trial, and imprisonment of over one dozen young Mexican American men caused such a stir that Sleepy Lagoon is considered a precursor to the infamous Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. During the Sleepy Lagoon trial, impassioned leftists in Los Angeles created the Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee (SLDC) to raise awareness about the crime and trial and to collect funds from supporters across the U.S., who ranged …

I1) Ancient Pilgrimage Routes As Tools For Durable Territorial Development: Insights From The Camino De Santiago And The Via Francigena, Maria Laura Gasparini

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences

Pilgrimage is a practice common to all major religions, involving a journey undertaken for spiritual or religious purposes towards a sacred site (Smith, 1992). Considered a forerunner of modern tourism (Di Giovine & Elsner, 2016; pilgrimage today is experiencing a notable phase of rejuvenation (Collins-Kreiner, 2016), increasingly marked by personal quests for meaning and spirituality (Trono, 2015). Beyond its religious and spiritual dimension, pilgrimage has been revitalised globally as a form of outdoor and slow tourism. The growing development of both historical and contemporary routes has captured the attention of policymakers, who increasingly recognise their potential for fostering local development, …
