First- and secondhand smokers are at an increased risk for influenza virus (IFV)-related respiratory failure and death. Despite approved influenza antiviral treatments, there is an unmet need for treatments that can improve outcomes in populations at risk for respiratory failure, including tobacco users with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Here we show that the sialidase fusion protein, DAS181, reduced viral burden, mitigated inflammation, and attenuated lung function loss, consistent with broad-spectrum anti-influenza responses in a mouse model of COPD and IFV-A infection. Treatment with DAS181 reprogramed the sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins (Siglecs) in alveolar macrophages, increased expression of phagocytic marker …

Background: Approximately 1.25 million individuals died of tuberculosis in 2023, in part due to ineffective treatment. In patients with paucibacillary tuberculosis, microbiologic confirmation and drug resistance testing via respiratory specimens is challenging; hence, stool samples are increasingly used for microbiologic confirmation. Targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) of stool DNA may improve detection of drug-resistant (DR) tuberculosis, helping patients receive appropriate treatments.
Methods: We assessed the ability of a nanopore tNGS approach using stool to detect drug resistance in a prospective, nested cohort of consecutive participants in Eswatini with pulmonary tuberculosis confirmed via sputum culture or sputum GeneXpert Ultra from 2020 to …

Mitochondrial dysfunction fuels vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis. Mitochondrial calcium uptake 1 (MICU1) maintains mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis. However, the role of MICU1 in vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis remains unknown. Here, we report that endothelial MICU1 prevents vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis by maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. We observed that vascular inflammation was aggravated in endothelial cell–specific Micu1 knockout mice (Micu1ECKO) and attenuated in endothelial cell–specific Micu1 transgenic mice (Micu1ECTg). Furthermore, hypercholesterolemic Micu1ECKO mice also showed accelerated development of atherosclerosis, while Micu1ECTg mice were protected against atherosclerosis. Mechanistically, MICU1 depletion increased mitochondrial Ca2+ influx, thereby decreasing the expression …
The Passive-Active Interaction (Pai) Model: Redefining Audio Interactions In Video Game Music, Morgan A. Weeks
The Passive-Active Interaction (Pai) Model: Redefining Audio Interactions In Video Game Music, Morgan A. Weeks
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Scholarship on music in video games has focused on the player in two main ways: the psychological effect music has on the player and the physical, kinesthetic relationship between the player’s inputs and the game’s music. This dissertation builds on this work by exploring gameplay moments in which the music informs the player’s inputs through rhythms, tempo, harmonic relationships, and changes in the musical texture. Using “analytical play” (Summers 2016), rhythmic analysis, looping analysis, and harmonic observations, alongside a variety of different video games, consoles and genres, I have developed an analytical Passive-Active Interaction (PAI) Model that is applicable to …

How Financial Aid Affects The Odds Of Study Abroad Participation For Students Of Color, Patrick Newcomb
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Prior research has shown that studying abroad provides students with enriching, diverse educational experiences with positive personal, academic, and professional outcomes. Despite the benefits, only a small portion of American higher education students participate in study abroad programs. Students of color disproportionately study abroad at lower rates than White students. Since cost is often cited as the primary barrier preventing education abroad, this study examined the types of financial aid associated with study abroad access and participation.
This study used data from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, which is a nationwide dataset designed to represent the makeup of institutions …

Adoption Of Virtual Influencers By The Healthcare Industry: Benefits And Drawbacks, Jessica L. Holden, Ismet Anitsal, Melek Meral Anitsal
AMTP Proceedings 2025
Social media influencers are thought leaders and influence others' attitudes, opinions, and behaviors (Pourkarim et al., 2023. Laszkiewicz & Kalinska, 2023). The healthcare industry currently utilizes social media and social media influencers to provide generalized health advice and opinions on and experiences with different providers (Reed & Feilding, 2022). However, the use of social media by healthcare businesses is still relatively novel (Gijsen et al., 2020), although it is becoming increasingly used for healthcare education and decision-making (Stellefson et al., 2020). Within the social media marketing space, there has been a rise in the use of virtual influencers. A Virtual …

The transcription factor Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) acts as a transcriptional activator and repressor. KLF4 plays a role in various cellular processes, including the dedifferentiation of somatic cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. Although it has been shown to enhance self-renewal in embryonic and leukemia stem cells, its role in adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) remains underexplored. We demonstrate that conditional deletion of the Klf4 gene in hematopoietic cells led to an increased frequency of immunophenotypic HSCs in the bone marrow, along with a normal distribution of lymphoid and myeloid progenitor cells. Noncompetitive bone marrow transplants showed normal engraftment and …
Use Of Wastewater Grit And Milorganite Chaff In Concrete, Carter Deinhammer
Use Of Wastewater Grit And Milorganite Chaff In Concrete, Carter Deinhammer
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Wastewater grit is a major byproduct from preliminary municipal wastewater treatment. Chaff is a collection of dried biosolids generated as a waste product from Milorganite® fertilizer production. Because landfilling is a costly and unsustainable method, the development of technologies for diverting grit from landfills to a useful product by tapping grit’s inherent values (e.g., sand and gravel) are of great interest. Chaff, consisting of fibers, provides a potential source for bolstering concrete tensile strength through internal means. This research has proposed a concept of grit and chaff additive-based concrete, an expansion of the grit-assisted patch material developed (GAP) in previous …

Beyond The Bickering: Examining Event, Victim, And Offender Characteristics For Sibling Abuse Incidents In Oregon, Isabella M. Starr
University Honors Theses
Sibling violence (SV) is the most prevalent form of intrafamilial and domestic violence, yet it remains underrecognized and lacks the systematic attention given to other forms of family violence. Often minimized or misclassified as typical sibling rivalry, SV can inflict serious and lasting physical, emotional, and psychological harm on its victims. This study explores the characteristics of sibling violence incidents reported to law enforcement in Oregon between 2016 and 2023, using data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Through an analysis of 5,793 single-victim, single-offender incidents, the research examines demographic patterns among victims and offenders, incident dynamics, and typological …

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip reduces hip stability due to insufficient femoral head coverage. Periacetabular osteotomy surgery aims to increase this coverage. Typically measured using radiographs, most coverage assessments are limited to static hip positions and cannot capture 3D anatomy. This study quantified how dynamic 3D femoral coverage changes during gait and squat after periacetabular osteotomy surgery and compared dynamic coverage to static measures.
METHODS: Pre- and post-surgery CT scans from 38 patients with hip dysplasia were used to reconstruct 3D femur and pelvis bones with which gait and squat were simulated. Models of 38 control subjects were also …

Therapies targeting blood vessels hold promise for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the most common inherited disorder causing kidney failure. However, the onset and nature of kidney vascular abnormalities in ADPKD are poorly defined. Accordingly, we employed a combination of single-cell transcriptomics; three-dimensional imaging with geometric, topological and fractal analyses; and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging with arterial spin labelling to investigate aberrant microvasculature in ADPKD kidneys. Within human ADPKD kidneys with advanced cystic pathology and excretory failure, we identified a molecularly distinct blood microvascular subpopulation, characterised by impaired angiogenic signalling and metabolic dysfunction, differing from endothelial injury profiles observed …

Mass univariate testing on functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) data is limited by difficulties achieving experiment-wide significance. Recent work addressing this problem has used enrichment analysis, which aggregates univariate screening statistics for a set of variables into a single enrichment statistic. There have been promising results using this method to explore fcMRI-behavior associations. However, there has not yet been a rigorous examination of the statistical properties of enrichment analysis when applied to fcMRI data. Establishing power for fcMRI enrichment analysis will be important for future neuropsychiatric and cognitive neuroscience study designs that plan to include this method. Here, we use realistic …

A 2-stage protocol is standard of care treatment in the United States for chronic periprosthetic joint infection of the knee. While many patients benefit from insertion of an articulating spacer, there are instances in which this is not feasible, and a static spacer is indicated. However, many static spacer techniques risk instability and lack durability. The ideal static spacer construct should provide immediate brace-free weight-bearing to maximize function during the spacer stage and, if needed, permit delayed reimplantation in the case of medically high-risk patients. Here, we describe our surgical technique for a femoral nail and cement static spacer in …

Inward rectifier Kir4.1 potassium channels are abundantly expressed in cells that are important for electrolyte homeostasis. Dysregulation of Kir4.1 underlies various neurological disorders. Here, through biochemical and structural studies of full-length Kir4.1, we show that dynein light chain 1 and 2 proteins, also as known as LC8, copurify with Kir4.1 at stoichiometric levels. Direct interaction between Kir4.1 and LC8 is supported by in vitro binding assays and reiterated with native Kir4.1 proteins from mouse brain. Notably, we identify a LC8 binding motif in the unstructured N terminus of Kir4.1. Among Kir subtypes, the motif is unique to Kir4.1 and is …

OBJECTIVE: The Enduring Consensus Cervical Cancer Screening and Management Guidelines Committee developed recommendations for the use of self-collected vaginal specimens for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing in health care settings.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed, external systematic reviews were evaluated, and HPV genotype agreement between self-collected vaginal and clinician-collected cervical specimens was summarized. Recommendations considered available data, public comments, and expert consensus. Recommendations were ratified through a vote by the Consensus Stakeholder Group.
RESULTS: Clinician-collected cervical specimens are preferred and self-collected vaginal specimens are acceptable for primary HPV screening of asymptomatic average-risk individuals. Repeat testing in 3 years is …

Animal studies have shown androgens, especially testosterone, may have an analgesic effect on nociceptive behavior. However, it is unclear if this effect is present in humans. This review and meta-analysis aim to summarize and synthesize the role of androgens on experimental pain sensitivity in humans. Studies were included if they examined the (1) relationships between androgens and experimental pain sensitivity, (2) group differences in androgen or pain levels, and (3) the effect of androgen interventions on experimental pain sensitivity. After a comprehensive search, 31 papers were identified. When possible, meta-analyses were performed. Most studies examined the impact of testosterone on …

INTRODUCTION: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), characterized by small-vessel thrombosis caused by endothelial injury, presents significant diagnostic and treatment challenges in kidney transplantation.
METHODS: To investigate the factors associated with posttransplant TMA, we conducted a retrospective study of 3535 kidney transplant recipients at our center from 2008 to 2023.
RESULTS: Sixty-eight patients were diagnosed with TMA, and 93% (63 of 68) underwent genetic testing. Patients were categorized into 3 groups based on the TMA etiology. Group 1 (
CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore the need for comprehensive pre and posttransplantation genetic testing to predict and manage the risk of TMA and prevent graft …
