This study examines how the communication network structure of a community of U.S. nonprofits evolves in response to the COVID-19
pandemic by examining their multiplex strategic communication network- building on Twitter/X. This study identifies two types of networks:
representational ties (for third-party audiences) and substantial ties (for direct resource exchange). Our findings suggest that organizations remain consistent with network strategies through different crisis stages, and the crisis provides opportunities for nonprofits to maintain existing substantial networks while building more extensive substantial networks. Representational ties, even the ones formed pre-crisis, hold the potential to turn into substantial relationships. Theoretically, this research …
Quarterback Statistics Vs. Season Success, Brendan Woods
Quarterback Statistics Vs. Season Success, Brendan Woods
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
The purpose of this research is to determine which quarterback statistic most significantly impacts team success in the National Football League. By analyzing data from quarterbacks with at least 100 pass attempts per season from 2006 to 2023, we examine the relationship between quarterback rating, passer rating, completion percentage, and TD-INT ratio with end-of-season power rankings. We ran the data through multiple linear regression models to identify which statistic has the strongest correlation with team performance. Our model considers variations across different seasons and accounts for statistical trends over time. With over 17 seasons of data analyzed, further exploration could …
An Analysis Of The Alaskan Salmon Harvest, Carson Allen
An Analysis Of The Alaskan Salmon Harvest, Carson Allen
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
The objective of this paper is to analyze the annual Alaskan salmon harvest and the variables that effect the harvest differently each year. Every year, thousands of workers’ livelihoods depend on the annual salmon harvest to provide for themselves and their families. This paper takes this reality and aims to use data gathered from previous fishing seasons to understand what variables affect the salmon population. To analyze the salmon harvest, multiple linear regression will be used over a 41 year period with variables including water temperature, air temperature, yearly harvest, and species of salmon. By modeling these and other variables, …

I Will Make No Defense, Sky Johnston
Women's and Gender Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
I Will Make No Defense is a combination of a short essay and a free-form poetry chapbook with a glossary of anattractional terms*. The essay discusses the erasure of complex queer identities within journalism, especially those that violate homonormativity. The poetry chapbook itself is written about the author's personal experiences regarding their identities as an aromantic, asexual, and transgender person, and was intended to help reduce this informational gap. It is prefaced by a glossary of necessary terms to aid its accessibility to the general population, and many of the poems address language that erases identities, how a-spec identities and …

Exploring The Role Of Ai And Educators In Shaping Student Creativity, Shyanne B. Mickelsen
Art 895 Research Papers
Art plays a vital role in personal expression and social innovation, yet as our students progress through the increasingly digital educational system, their creative confidence often diminishes due to external pressures such as peer comparison, time constraints, and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). As students progressively engage with new technology that can generate creative outputs, it raises questions about the authenticity of their work and the role of human creativity in regards to originality. This study examines how the pressure to be original intersects with creativity and the impact of AI on students' artistic expression. The aim is to …

Dipl 3370 Gender, Race And Culture In International Relations, Fredline M’Cormack-Hale Ph.D.
Diplomacy Syllabi
That gender should have a central place in international relations is finally beginning to take hold in the discipline. Most, if not all, introductory IR classes spend some time looking at how a study of states and the political and economic power they wield is incomplete without a consideration of how notions of femininity and masculinity also shape international relations. However, while IR scholars share concerns around male dominance in IR, feminism is not a monolithic concept and there is a diversity of both feminist approaches as well as topics studied. Moreover, intersectionality tells us that it is important to …

Doing More Good For Less: Salvaging Development Aid, Trey Dykeman
Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics
In stark contrast to its peak in the Marshall Plan era, professional sentiment towards international development aid has become increasingly pessimistic as its shortcomings have become apparent. Inter alia, leading thinkers charge development aid with enabling and sustaining economic dependency, governmental corruption, political power imbalances, and paternalism. Even so, there may be diamondlike programs in the development aid rough. Cash and voucher assistance (CVA) programs—a subset of development aid—have seen moderate success. In particular, as compared to other forms of aid, unconditional cash transfer programs (UCTs)—a specific type of CVA—appear economical and effective and avoid many of the above …

The Impact Of Sec Deadline: Does Accelerated Sec Filing Deadlines For Publicly Traded Companies Increase Restatements Of Financial Statements?, Angela Sutton
Honors Projects in Accounting
This paper examines the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) requirement of the 10-K filing deadlines and how the implementation of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) regulations can cause an increase in the likelihood of misstatements in financial reporting by publicly traded companies. The SEC shortening the deadline time frame had a negative impact on smaller companies since auditors were focusing more on larger companies to get the report done in an effective and timely manner. Investors, in turn, perceive smaller companies as having internal control weaknesses due to being late to file their reports. Data will be collected from all 10-K filing deadlines …

Deconstructing A Theology Of Scarcity. Case Study: Watermark Zoning Case Presented To The City Of Dallas, Todd M. Atkins
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
In their book, Moral Leadership for a Divided Age, David P. Gushee and Colin Holtz discuss 14 historical leaders' life stories and their leadership principles. In chapter four, the authors highlight the life of Harriet Tubman and identify the following leadership lesson, “Faith can drive both moral evil and moral greatness.” These authors go on to state that African slaves, white slaveholders, and the Northern and Southern Abolitionists each on some level claim to worship and adhere to the same sacred scriptures. From our current point of view, several hundred years removed, it seems impossible for enslaved Africans and white …

Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses
This project explores the feasibility of replacing a traditional camshaft driven system with an electronically actuated camless design for internal combustion engines. The primary motivation is to improve engine efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend the relevance of combustion engines in a future leaning toward electrification. Traditional camshaft systems limit engine responsiveness and efficiency due to fixed valve timing. Our camless solution addresses these limitations by using solenoids controlled by microcontrollers to open and close the valves based on the crankshaft position. We developed a modular prototype that integrates both analog and digital hall effect sensors for crank angle detection, dual …

Impact Of Data Snooping On Deep Learning Models For Locating Vulnerabilities In Lifted Code, Gary Mccully, John Hastings, Shengjie Xu
Research & Publications
This study examines the impact of data snooping on neural networks used to detect vulnerabilities in lifted code, and builds on previous research that used word2vec and unidirectional and bidirectional transformer-based embeddings. The research specifically focuses on how model performance is affected when embedding models are trained with datasets, which include samples used for neural network training and validation. The results show that introducing data snooping did not significantly alter model performance, suggesting that data snooping had a minimal impact or that samples randomly dropped as part of the methodology contained hidden features critical to achieving optimal performance. In addition, …

Turning Farm Waste Into Energy: Pragmatic Approaches For Cleaner Midwestern American Communities, Rebecca Gaisie
Selected or Submitted Student Research Papers/Projects
Mismanagement of farm waste in the Midwest of the United States has resulted in significant methane emissions, water contamination, and public health concerns. The present manure management rules are still inconsistent, underfunded, and insufficient to motivate individuals to behave in a way that benefits the environment, despite increasing concerns about the environment. This policy study investigates anaerobic digestion as a potential means to convert waste into energy that could support rural and environmental development. Some of the problems with the federal and state legislation examined in this study under an EPI framework are a lack of incentives, inadequate technical support, …

An Exploration Of How Motivations And Perceived Ability Influence An Advisor's Willingness To Give Advice, Ishani Banerji
An Exploration Of How Motivations And Perceived Ability Influence An Advisor's Willingness To Give Advice, Ishani Banerji
Publications
Decision-makers frequently rely on advice from advisors, yet little is known about the factors influencing advisors' willingness to give advice (WTGA). This paper explores WTGA through three studies, investigating its relationship to advice quality, an advisor's motivations, and abilities. Our findings show that advisors frequently demonstrate a willingness to give advice even when their solution to the specific problem is incorrect, resulting in the dissemination of poor-quality advice. We find that both the helping and influence motives predict WTGA, with the helping motivation playing a more dominant role. Finally, we find that WTGA varies significantly as a function of advisors' …
Effectively Advising Students Transitioning Majors, Layna Holk
Effectively Advising Students Transitioning Majors, Layna Holk
Higher Education Student Work
Students often feel unprepared for the academic demands of their chosen majors and can experience a lack of sufficient support from advisory practices, in turn feeling overwhelmed in their academic journey (Cody, 2024). Guided by extrinsic and intrinsic motivations alongside their personal orientations, major changes can affect a student’s retention to a school or the higher education institution as a whole (Soria & Stebleton, 2013; Gillis & Ryberg, 2021). To address this challenge, I developed a training program for faculty advisors in Effectively Advising Students Transitioning (EAST) majors. In doing so, I will train faculty to appropriately navigate and effectively …

Changing Narratives Of Self-Improvement: Self-Help Literature Across Two Eras, Ayesha Aslam
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
This project explores how the narratives of personal growth in self-help literature have evolved between the 1970s and the 2010s. The goal was to identify which themes persisted across eras and how others shifted in response to broader cultural and technological changes. I hypothesized that 1970s texts would emphasize self-control and traditional success, while 2010s texts would highlight flexibility, mental well-being, and authenticity, with some shared focus on motivation and habit-building. To test this, I selected five bestselling books from each decade and applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling using a Colab-based notebook. The top 30 most salient terms …
