Effect Of Heat Stress On Ileal Epithelial Barrier Integrity In Broilers Divergently Selected For High- And Low-Water Efficiency, Elizabeth S. Greene, Brooklee Roach, Maria Fernandez Cuadrado, Sara Orlowski, Sami Dridi

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Water scarcity and rising global temperatures are two of the greatest current and future threats to poultry sustainability. Therefore, selection for water efficiency (WE) and heat resilience are of vital importance. Additionally, intestinal integrity is of critical importance under challenging conditions to maintain nutrient absorption and therefore, growth and performance of broilers. Here, we examined the effect of chronic cyclic heat stress (HS) on the ileal expression profile of tight-junction, gap-junction, adherens, and desmosome genes in the fourth generation of divergently selected low (LWE)- and high water efficient (HWE)-chicken lines. LWE birds exhibited higher levels of gut permeability, regardless of …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Recent studies of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have shown their globular cluster (GC) systems to be central in unveiling their remarkable properties and halo masses. Deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging revealed 54 GC candidates around the UDG NGC5846_UDG1 (UDG1), with a remarkable 13 per cent of the stellar light contained in the GC system. We present a kinematic analysis of UDG1's GC system from observations with the integral field spectrograph Keck Cosmic Web Imager on the Keck II telescope. We measure recessional velocities for 19 GCs, confirming them as members of UDG1, giving a total of 20 confirmed GCs when combined …

Examining The Influence Of Sports Nutrition Counseling On Collegiate Athletes, Jenelle Leon Saravia Apr 2025

Examining The Influence Of Sports Nutrition Counseling On Collegiate Athletes, Jenelle Leon Saravia

Theses

This study explored the influence of nutrition counseling provided by registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) on collegiate athletes’ dietary behaviors, knowledge, and perceptions of nutrition. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating qualitative interviews with 15 athletes from six sports across four schools. Participants reflected on their counseling experiences, focusing on its impact on their nutritional habits, health, and athletic performance. Quantitative data, including a one-sample t-test on recommendation scores, revealed a mean score of 6.73 (SD = 0.46) on a 7-point scale, indicating consistently high satisfaction with nutrition counseling. Thematic analysis identified five themes: Influence of Counseling, Behavioral Changes, Self-Reported Understanding …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: At least 37 % emergency department (ED) patients are discharged without a definitive diagnosis, resulting in diagnostic uncertainty. Transitions of care are high-risk periods for patient safety, especially for patients discharged with diagnostic uncertainty. Effective communication between clinicians and patients improves these care transitions. Previous research developed tools to support high quality discharge in the setting of diagnostic uncertainty, including: a communication checklist, a physician training program, and a patient-facing information sheet.

METHODS: This study aims to enhance transitions for patients leaving the ED with diagnostic uncertainty through an electronic health record (EHR)-based strategy. The intervention, the Targeted EHR-based …

BACKGROUND: Publicly-insured and uninsured individuals-many of whom are marginalized because of race/ethnicity, ability status, and/or other social identities-experience barriers to accessing evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for eating disorders (EDs). Additionally, EBIs have not been developed with or for diverse populations, exacerbating poor treatment uptake. Mobile technology is well-positioned to bridge this gap and increase access to low-cost, culturally-sensitive EBIs.

METHODS: This study leverages a user-centered design approach to adapt an existing coached cognitive-behavioral therapy-based digital program and evaluate its usability in a sample of 11 participants with (sub)clinical binge type EDs who are publicly-insured (n = 10) or uninsured (n = …

Priming CD8+ T cells against tumors or viral pathogens results largely from cross-presentation of exogenous antigens by type 1 conventional dendritic cells (cDC1s). Although monocyte-derived DCs and cDC2s can cross-present in vitro, their physiological relevance remains unclear. Here, we used genetic models to evaluate the role of cDC subsets in presentation of cell-associated and immune complex antigens to CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in vivo. For cell-associated antigens, cDC1s were necessary and sufficient to prime both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. In contrast, for immune complex antigens, either cDC1 or cDC2, but not monocyte-derived DCs, could carry out cross-presentation to …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Microglia impact brain development, homeostasis, and pathology. One important microglial function in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is to contain proteotoxic amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques. Recent studies reported the involvement of autophagy-related (ATG) proteins in this process. Here, we found that microglia-specific deletion of Atg7 in an AD mouse model impaired microglia coverage of Aβ plaques, increasing plaque diffusion and neurotoxicity. Single-cell RNA sequencing, biochemical, and immunofluorescence analyses revealed that Atg7 deficiency reduces unfolded protein response (UPR) while increasing oxidative stress. Cellular assays demonstrated that these changes lead to lipoperoxidation and ferroptosis of microglia. In aged mice without Aβ buildup, UPR reduction and …

Sept9 And Pai-1 Are Immunohistochemical Biomarkers Of The Hepatocellular Carcinoma Immune Microenvironment, Eundong Park, Xin Wang, Nusret Bekir Subasi, Michel Kmeid, Paul J Higgins, Anne Chen, Hwajeong Lee

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Septin 9 (SEPT9) interacts with multiple oncogenic proteins and is expressed abnormally in several cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) promotes tumor formation and progression by modulating the tumor immune microenvironment. CXCR2+ immune cells play a crucial role in HCC formation, progression, and prognosis. The relationship between SEPT9 and PAI-1, and their impact on the HCC immune microenvironment remains unclear.

METHODS: Expression levels of SEPT9 and PAI-1 were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in HCC and background benign liver (n = 76). Their IHC results were examined for relationships with immune cell markers (CXCR2, CD3, CD15, CD68, …

Just Like Us: Mdl Is Eating Weedkiller, Andrew H. Paul Apr 2025

Just Like Us: Mdl Is Eating Weedkiller, Andrew H. Paul

Georgia State University Law Review

The ingestion of an herbicide called glyphosate is currently unavoidable in America. It is the main ingredient of a consumer product called Roundup. People who regularly used Roundup have brought civil lawsuits against its manufacturer, Monsanto (now owned by Bayer), claiming Roundup caused their cancer diagnoses. Juries, particularly those in state courts, have awarded some plaintiffs massive damages awards. But jury trials elude most of the glyphosate plaintiffs who find themselves in federal court. There, the same can be said for nearly all products liability litigants. This is due to the procedure that has slowly come to dominate mass torts …

Okefen-Not-Okay: Georgia’S Wetlands Are In Danger, Constance Burton Apr 2025

Okefen-Not-Okay: Georgia’S Wetlands Are In Danger, Constance Burton

Georgia State University Law Review

Wetlands are considered the kidneys of the earth’s ecosystem. Their complex hydrologic systems work to clean pollutants from surface and ground water—water that often ends up as drinking water. Since the 1940s, Congress has recognized the importance of clean water in our everyday lives, and it has passed several water protection laws including the Clean Water Act. The Clean Water Act requires a permit for any activity that discharges dredge or fill material into “waters of the United States.” However, environmentalists and private landowners were at odds on how broad the Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers could …

Tax Evasion And Judicial Oversight: Examining The Circuit Split On Conservation Easements, Harry A. Mullen Iv Apr 2025

Tax Evasion And Judicial Oversight: Examining The Circuit Split On Conservation Easements, Harry A. Mullen Iv

Georgia State University Law Review

Conservation easements have long been an attractive tool for those seeking to minimize their tax bill. After all, it is a low-cost method of getting a sizeable tax deduction. But what should be an incentive for the environmental or historical preservation of land is instead a frequent avenue for tax abuse and avoidance. Regulations are one way the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) works to make the deduction harder to abuse. The subject of this Note provides one example: the “Proceeds Regulation,” which provides certain protections for the recipient of the conservation easement.

However, after a challenge from a taxpayer in …

White Rabbit Bankruptcy Appeals: The (Unconstitutional) Jurisdictional Significance Of Being Late, Matthew Kent Stiles Apr 2025

White Rabbit Bankruptcy Appeals: The (Unconstitutional) Jurisdictional Significance Of Being Late, Matthew Kent Stiles

Georgia State University Law Review

Unlike ordinary civil litigation, which usually allows thirty days to appeal, appeals from bankruptcy court usually allow only fourteen. Adding to that difference, bankruptcy cases can have many appealable final decisions instead of just one. But what happens if an appeal is filed late? In ordinary civil litigation, that usually means dismissal for lack of subject matter jurisdiction. As for bankruptcy appeals, it depends on the circuit because, although most agree that it must be dismissed on jurisdictional grounds, others disagree—meaning that an appellee might forfeit the right to seek dismissal of an untimely appeal if the appellee doesn’t act. …

Vindicating Retirees, Lauren K. Valastro Apr 2025

Vindicating Retirees, Lauren K. Valastro

Georgia State University Law Review

Through ERISA, Congress prioritized the competent management of retirement plans held in trust for Americans, codifying strict fiduciary obligations and providing broad relief to those injured by fiduciaries failing to execute those duties. Specifically, ERISA provides retirement plan participants and beneficiaries, along with plans themselves and the Secretary of Labor, an inherent, substantive right to seek plan-wide monetary and equitable redress for injuries resulting from fiduciary mismanagement. Today, retirement plans hold more than $10 trillion and constitute a substantial portion of the funds Americans will subsist on in retirement. Despite their vital import, particularly for women and members of minority …

Parchment Rights In Treacherous Hands: The History And Future Of Georgia’S “Social Status Provision”, Max Ayres Rogers Apr 2025

Parchment Rights In Treacherous Hands: The History And Future Of Georgia’S “Social Status Provision”, Max Ayres Rogers

Georgia State University Law Review

In the throes of “Radical Reconstruction,” the population of Georgia remained sharply divided along racial and political lines. Three long years passed between emancipation and the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment, during which time the status of the state’s Black population remained uncertain. They were no longer enslaved but not yet citizens, and the bounds of their freedom were uncharted. For the first time, Black men obtained political power and participated in the recreation of the Georgia constitution. When Reconstruction came to an abrupt and violent end, most of that charter met the same fate. The Social Status Provision survived, …

No. 39: Considering The Migration And Food Security Nexus In African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed Apr 2025

No. 39: Considering The Migration And Food Security Nexus In African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

International migration and food security are still treated as separate policy and research domains, yet they are deeply intertwined in the African urban context. This paper unbundles the nexus between migration and urban food security by examining how migrants and refugees navigate food systems, cope with vulnerabilities, and deploy resilience strategies to mitigate food insecurity. As rapid urbanization reshapes African cities, migrants are becoming actors in informal food economies, both as consumers and vendors. However, economic exclusion, weak social protection, and precarity often expose them to heightened food insecurity. The paper explores how migrant food security is shaped by urban …

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

While there is substantial literature on the effects of COVID-19 on formal businesses, limited evidence exists on the impacts of the pandemic on informal female-owned enterprises. Additionally, no studies have explored the role of post-pandemic recovery strategies in meeting the unique challenges experienced by the informal food vendors in secondary cities in the Global South. In this paper, we explore the impacts of COVID-19 and the post-pandemic recovery strategies on female informal food vendors in Kisumu, the third largest city in the western region of Kenya. The study adopted qualitative methods – in-depth and key informant interviews and focus group …

No. 37: Harnessing Diaspora Finance For Climate Resilience In Africa, Eunice Annan-Aggrey Apr 2025

No. 37: Harnessing Diaspora Finance For Climate Resilience In Africa, Eunice Annan-Aggrey

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

As climate change accelerates, the costs of adaptation are rising sharply. This escalation comes at a time when financial inflows to developing countries – such as official development assistance and foreign direct investment – are declining. Meanwhile, the global political climate is becoming unfavourable to sustained climate financing commitments. In this context, the role of remittances in supporting climate adaptation and mitigation in developing countries has attracted growing interest. This paper broadens the lens to examine diaspora finance more holistically, encompassing not only remittances but also diaspora investments and knowledge transfer. It explores the potential of these various diaspora finance …

Who Defines The Refugee?: Analyzing The Limitations And Relevance Of The 1951 Un Convention On Global Refugee Protection, Sarah Locke '25 Apr 2025

Who Defines The Refugee?: Analyzing The Limitations And Relevance Of The 1951 Un Convention On Global Refugee Protection, Sarah Locke '25

Honor Scholar Theses

This thesis consists of three chapters and a mini-fourth. In Chapter One, I examine the historical context of the 1951 Convention and its lasting implications. I discuss the early history of the international refugee law regime and the power dynamics that shaped the UN Convention’s drafting. Using a postcolonial lens, I evaluate how the historical context of the Convention continues to perpetuate inequalities and exclusions today, especially through the myth of difference. In Chapter Two, I address the limitations of the 1951 Convention through a comparative analysis with two regional conventions. By analyzing the definition of refugee in each convention, …

The Role Of Answer Justification In Multiple-Choice Testing: Effects On Performance And Metacognitive Accuracy, Spenser A. Clark, Michellle L. Rivers, Acacia L. Overono

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Student Research

Multiple-choice (MC) tests are widely used in educational settings but have been criticized for promoting passive recognition rather than active retrieval. Our research explores how adding a simple component to MC tests—answer justification—influences test performance and metacognitive accuracy. Across two experiments, university students studied a textbook chapter and completed either a standard MC test (MC-only group) or an MC test requiring them to justify their answers (answer justification group). Participants also provided predictive and postdictive metacognitive judgments. The results showed that the answer justification group significantly outperformed the MC-only group on an immediate test (Experiments 1 and 2) and scored …
