Examining The Nexus Of Communication, Leadership, And Employee Satisfaction In Community Colleges: A Mixed-Methods Exploration, Sudhir J. Kamath
Examining The Nexus Of Communication, Leadership, And Employee Satisfaction In Community Colleges: A Mixed-Methods Exploration, Sudhir J. Kamath
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Employee turnover and attrition are not something that organizations look forward to. This is particularly significant at community colleges, where staff retention is important for stability and student success. While employees leave for a variety of reasons, dissatisfaction is one of the main reasons employees look for other jobs. This research seeks to answer the central question: How do different leadership styles and communication practices impact employee satisfaction levels at rural two-year community colleges? A mixed methods case study was conducted using survey and semi-structured interviews at four rural Midwestern colleges.

Key Points:
-
We aimed to elucidate potential methylation, proteomic, and metabolomic mechanisms by which APOL1 variants may be linked to kidney disease.
-
We report distinct methylation profiling between APOL1 risk allele carriers and noncarriers, many near APOL gene family.
-
We report higher APOL1 protein and lower C18:1 cholesteryl ester in two risk allele carriers.
Background: The APOL1 high-risk haplotype has been associated with CKD and the deterioration of kidney function, particularly in populations with West African ancestry. However, the mechanisms by which APOL1 risk variants increase the risk for kidney disease and its progression have not been fully elucidated.

Clinical Practice Guideline For The Improvement Of Care Compliance Of Children Affected By Obesity, Denise Vaz
Clinical Practice Guideline For The Improvement Of Care Compliance Of Children Affected By Obesity, Denise Vaz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood obesity is diagnosed in children with a weight that is above the normal levels for their age and height. This diagnosis can be made if the child's body mass index (BMI) percentile is equal to or above 95% for age and sex. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; 2024), BMI, an anthropometric index of weight and height, is calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in meters), is used to assess if a child is underweight, overweight, obese or of healthy weight. The Cleveland Clinic (2024) noted that BMI …

In this holdover case involving an alleged illegal sublet, the landlord sought to evict the tenant based on a Notice to Cure. The tenant moved to dismiss, arguing that the landlord failed to comply with LLC §206 by not filing a certificate of publication before initiating the case. The court found that the landlord's subsequent attempt to cure the defect did not retroactively grant the landlord standing, as the failure to comply with LLC §206 deprived the tenant of necessary transparency at the time the case began. Consequently, the court dismissed the case for lack of standing.

Old Habits Die Hard: How The Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act Perpetuates Settler Colonialism And Denies Indigenous Sovereignty, Brandon Dodds
Emory Law Journal Online
Around the time it was passed, the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act of 1980 was considered by many to be a great victory for the Wabanaki Nations in Maine. But in the decades since, the Act has substantially hindered the Wabanaki Nations’ self-determination efforts. Frequent litigation between the Nations and the state of Maine, narrow interpretation by courts, and the state of Maine’s opposition to remedying the Act’s most harmful provisions have constrained the sovereignty of the Wabanaki Nations. As a result, the Wabanaki Nations have been largely excluded from the significant social, economic, and political gains that tribes throughout …
Lived Experiences Of Seropositive Msm Who Face Intersectional Stigma Regarding Hiv-Prevention And Care In California, Sagar Bedi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals who are positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and identify as MSM (men who have sex with men), a population disproportionately affected by this disease, face complex struggles due to interplay between multiple forms of stigma, disclosure, and HIV risk behaviors. This results in delayed testing, poor treatment adherence, and decreased engagement in care. Despite the growing body of research on HIV among MSM, very few studies have explored the complex ways in which multiple forms of stigma intersect and impact the lives of Seropositive MSM. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perception and lived …
Exploring The Impact Of Internalized Negative Stereotypes On Black Women's Identity Development, Mental Health, And Resilience, Angela Nicole Clarke
Exploring The Impact Of Internalized Negative Stereotypes On Black Women's Identity Development, Mental Health, And Resilience, Angela Nicole Clarke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Stereotypes affect Black women’s self-concept, psychological well-being, and overall mental health, influencing how they perceive themselves and are perceived by others. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Black women who have internalized negative stereotypes, such as the angry Black woman and strong Black woman, and explored their impact on identity development and mental health. Intersectionality theory provided the framework for the study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 15 Black women from the Southeast and Southwest United States. Thematic analysis revealed key patterns of resilience such as community support, code-switching, and self-affirmation. Findings also highlighted the …
Medical Social Workers’ Self-Efficacy And Perceptions Of Interdisciplinary Collaboration Managing Patients With Chronic Pain And Opioid Use Disorder, Alexis Ware
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social work is a complex field, with the roles and responsibilities of social workers often unclear. This ambiguity can lead to low self-efficacy and hinder effective collaboration with other disciplines, which can negatively impact patient care. The purpose of this quantitative study is to explore the relationship between the occupational self-efficacy of medical social workers, level of experience and social workers’ perceptions of interdisciplinary collaboration when managing patients with co-occurring chronic pain and opioid use disorder. The theoretical framework that guided this study is Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. The conceptual framework for this research is Bronstein’s model of interdisciplinary collaboration. The …
Evaluating Wrist Placement And Signal Processing Techniques For Real-World Hrv Monitoring Using Ppg, Andrew Murphy
Evaluating Wrist Placement And Signal Processing Techniques For Real-World Hrv Monitoring Using Ppg, Andrew Murphy
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
This thesis investigates trade-offs between signal quality and data coverage in photoplethysmographic (PPG) heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring using wrist-worn devices. The goal was to evaluate whether wrist placement and signal processing techniques can improve measurement reliability in real-world conditions. Data was collected from healthy participants wearing smartwatches on both wrists during rest and a structured math task introducing natural wrist movement. Three distinct processing methodologies were compared, including a proposed Rolling-Standardized Derivative (RSD) approach. Results showed that while HRV signals from both wrists were highly correlated at rest, motion caused a measurable drop in signal quality and inter-wrist agreement, …

Living With Alzheimer’S: A Guide To How To Lower The Risk Of Memory Loss & Care For Those With Alzheimer’S, Mona Muzammil, Washain Muzammil
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
Despite the frequent characterization of Alzheimer's disease as a “loss of self,"" this enlightening book demonstrates unequivocally that a person's unique self persists throughout the course of the disease. The important message in Caring for People with Alzheimer’s is how much can be done in care settings to support a person's sense of identity and thereby enrich the lives of people experiencing the many losses associated with dementia. Drawing from a diverse body of research, this book brings together the recommendations of the best thinkers and practitioners in multiple disciplines to illustrate the meaning of self and the importance of …

Predictors Of Political Participation Of U.S. Social Workers: The Mediating Effect Of Confidence, Maria Wathen, Rachel A. Young, Amy Krings, Teresa Kilbane
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
What factors are associated with social workers’ political participation, and how does political confidence mediate those relationships? To answer this question, data were collected in 2020 through an original online survey of members of the U.S.-based National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Informed by self-efficacy theory, researchers conducted a structural equation modeling (SEM) path model with political participation as the outcome variable, and political confidence as a mediating variable. Exogenous variables included: one’s self-reported political orientation, belief that social work has a political mandate, gender, and knowledge about how to effectively participate in politics. Results indicate that high political confidence …

We developed a practical framework to construct digital twins for predicting and optimizing triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). This study employed 105 TNBC patients from the ARTEMIS trial (NCT02276443, registered on 10/21/2014) who received Adriamycin/Cytoxan (A/C)-Taxol (T). Digital twins were established by calibrating a biology-based mathematical model to patient-specific MRI data, which accurately predicted pathological complete response (pCR) with an AUC of 0.82. We then used each patient's twin to theoretically optimize outcome by identifying their optimal A/C-T schedule from 128 options. The patient-specifically optimized treatment yielded a significant improvement in pCR rate of 20.95-24.76%. Retrospective …

Background: Methamphetamine (MA) use has been linked to engaging in sexual risk behaviors (SRBs) that are associated with HIV/STIs, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) and men who have sex with men and women (MSMW; hereafter MSM/W). The objectives of this analysis were to determine whether reduced MA is associated with decreases in SRBs in a sample of MSM/W.
Method: Data came from the ADAPT- 2 trial, a randomized, double-blind, two-stage sequential parallel design trial evaluating extended-release injectable naltrexone (NTX) and oral bupropion (BUP) vs. placebo for MA use disorder. In the first 6 weeks of the …

Characterizing Stroke Presenting To A Regional Referral Hospital Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Uganda: A Retrospective Analysis, Christopher Burant, Shirley Moore, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Introduction: Stroke, a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, disproportionately impacts low and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) which reports the highest stroke burden. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated this situation, emerging as a significant stroke risk factor. The pandemic also disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, affecting stroke management and care accessibility, and leading to deteriorated conditions in stroke patients upon hospital admission. In this pre/during COVID-19 pandemic analysis of acute stroke cases presenting to a Ugandan hospital, we investigated the relationship between stroke admissions, management and treatment outcomes. Methods: This was a retrospective medical record review in …

Changing Roles For The Printed Hymnal At The Turn Of The Twenty-First Century: An Analysis Of Three Non-Denominational Hymnals, Donna Moore King

The 1990s saw a marked increase in hymnal publication, an area of printing that had remained steady but slow through most of the twentieth century. The work of hymnal committees and marketing departments during this decade suggests a real optimism about church music and re-energized congregations for the new century, but the flurry of publishing activity was more likely fueled by complicated changes begun decades earlier. The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) had opened the door for new worship forms as they considered the needs of lay worshippers; counter-cultural movements of the same decade all but demanded new music for young …

DHCR and the AG sought a preliminary injunction barring affiliated brokers from collecting fees above the legal rent in rent-stabilized units, arguing that the brokers were functionally extensions of the landlord used to circumvent rent laws. The case was post-answer and followed a prior injunction against earlier entities. DHCR presented internal emails, financial records, and operational documents showing that the brokerages "though nominally independent" were controlled by the landlord and used to disguise unlawful charges. Defendants argued that these brokers operated independently, but failed to refute the extensive documentation tying them to the landlord. The court found a likelihood of …
