Enhancing Construction Simulation Optimization Performance Through Variance Reduction Techniques, Mohammed Mawlana, Amin Hammad Jul 2026

Enhancing Construction Simulation Optimization Performance Through Variance Reduction Techniques, Mohammed Mawlana, Amin Hammad

College of Architecture and the Built Environment Faculty Papers

Simulation optimization has been used to analyze construction operations and support planning decisions under uncertainty. It enables the identification of effective planning strategies throughout a project’s lifecycle. However, the use of stochastic simulation to evaluate alternative strategies results in higher computational demands and the generation of inferior solutions within the resulting optimal solutions. This study examines the feasibility of overcoming these issues by implementing variance reduction techniques into a discrete-event simulation optimization framework. Three variance reduction techniques are evaluated in a case study: Common Random Numbers, Antithetic Variates, and a combined application of both. While these techniques are well established …

Behaviors arise from coordinated neural activity across diverse spatial and temporal scales. Prior work has linked better task performance and cognitive functioning to patterns of global network connectivity requiring minimal reconfiguration when switching between task demands. This metric indexing similarity in functional connectivity across task and rest has been termed “neural efficiency.” Here we assess stability of neural efficiency over approximately 3 years in adolescence, specificity across two task-rest combinations and associations with anxiety. At approximately age 16 and/or 19, 95 participants completed a resting state scan alongside a cognitive control and/or threat task. Neural efficiency was quantified as partial …

The Languages Of Translocality: What Plurilingualism Means In A Maghrebi Context, Edwige Tamalet Talbayev Jul 2026

The Languages Of Translocality: What Plurilingualism Means In A Maghrebi Context, Edwige Tamalet Talbayev

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

This essay rethinks monolingual approaches to Maghrebi literature that rests on the supremacy of French and Arabic as languages of expression. Instead, Edwige Tamalet proposes a plurilingual translocal critical practice both grounded in local contexts and marked by transversal trajectories between multiple sites across the Mediterranean.

Mucho Ruido Y Pocas Nueces? Rethinking Mexico's Judicial Reform In Comparative Perspective, Oscar Serratos Jul 2026

Mucho Ruido Y Pocas Nueces? Rethinking Mexico's Judicial Reform In Comparative Perspective, Oscar Serratos

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

Mexico's 2024 judicial reform, which made it the first country to elect all judges by popular vote, has generated widespread criticism for allegedly threatening judicial independence and democratic governance. This Article challenges the prevailing narrative by arguing that many of these concerns overstate the reform's practical effect. Through a comparative analysis of Mexico's new constitutional framework and judicial electoral systems in the United States, the Article demonstrates that the reform incorporates structural safeguards—including balanced nomination powers, nonpartisan elections, restrictions on campaign financing, and continued judicial training—that set it apart from comparable American models. While acknowledging legitimate concerns regarding implementation and …

From Vulnerability To Justice: Reframing Indigenous Disaster Recovery Through A Human Rights-Based Lens, Portia Ozioma Chigbu Jul 2026

From Vulnerability To Justice: Reframing Indigenous Disaster Recovery Through A Human Rights-Based Lens, Portia Ozioma Chigbu

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

Indigenous populations regard their cultural identity as central to their way of life, and their traditional lifestyles often place them in remote areas, isolating them from mainstream society. This isolation creates a unique set of human rights challenges, such as limited access to healthcare, restricted political representation, housing insecurity, and poor living conditions, making them especially vulnerable compared to other groups. In the context of climate change and the rising frequency of natural disasters worldwide, these vulnerabilities become more protracted and intensified. Since Indigenous populations already face structural disadvantages before disasters strike, such events deepen their vulnerabilities, increase their risk …

Community Ai Resilience: A Five-Pillar Framework For Preparing Communities For An Ai-Transformed World, Robin D. Anderson, Nicholas A. Curtis Jul 2026

Community Ai Resilience: A Five-Pillar Framework For Preparing Communities For An Ai-Transformed World, Robin D. Anderson, Nicholas A. Curtis

Faculty Scholarship

Current artificial intelligence readiness strategies focus almost exclusively on two priorities: expanding access to AI tools and developing a technical workforce. While necessary, these efforts are insufficient. AI seems likely to transform how people work and, with that, to reshape how individuals derive meaning, how families function, and how communities organize. This paper presents the Community AI Resilience Framework, a five-pillar model addressing the human systems dimensions of AI transformation: (1) Economic Resilience and Regulatory Adaptation; (2) Social Cohesion and Belonging Infrastructure; (3) Psychological Resilience and Identity Reconstruction; (4) Civic and Educational Renewal; and (5) Ecological and Leisure Commons Management. …

The recommended dose of fertiliser (RDF) was applied as a soil application to all treatments. AMF inoculation significantly increased grain yield …

Beyond Step Counts: Dual Perspectives On Designing Interactive Technologies To Support Outdoor Movement In Older Adults, Fatima Badmos, Emma Murphy, Peterson Jean, Damon Berry Jul 2026

Beyond Step Counts: Dual Perspectives On Designing Interactive Technologies To Support Outdoor Movement In Older Adults, Fatima Badmos, Emma Murphy, Peterson Jean, Damon Berry

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Outdoor movement supports older adults' health and wellbeing, yet participation is constrained by environmental, physical, and social barriers. Existing technologies often prioritise clinical risk management and quantified functional metrics, and rarely integrate older adults' lived experience alongside physical activity experts' perspectives in early design. We conducted four focus group workshops with 24 urban dwelling older adults (63 to 91 years) and semi structured online interviews with 11 physical activity experts. Data were analysed using thematic analysis and grounded theory coding, then triangulated to identify convergent themes, divergent perspectives, and complementary views. Key tensions concerned risk management versus independence, clinical benchmarks …

Board Independence And Nonprofit Performance: A Contingency Approach, Ayokunle Abe Amoo Jul 2026

Board Independence And Nonprofit Performance: A Contingency Approach, Ayokunle Abe Amoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Board independence is central to the governance of nonprofit organizations and is widely recommended by regulators and governing bodies to strengthen accountability and performance. However, little is known about its impact on nonprofit organizations and particularly their operational efficiency, an important facet of performance reflected in fundraising and administrative cost ratios, key metrics that donors and other stakeholders rely on to assess whether a nonprofit is a responsible steward of contributed resources. Drawing on agency and institutional theories, this study examines the link between board independence and performance and the extent to which organizations’ broader socioeconomic context moderates this link. …

Strategic Artificial Intelligence Use And Microbusiness Performance: Evidence From U.S. Minority-Owned Business, Doreen Nkenyeh Ayafor Jul 2026

Strategic Artificial Intelligence Use And Microbusiness Performance: Evidence From U.S. Minority-Owned Business, Doreen Nkenyeh Ayafor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Minority-owned microenterprises play a critical role in economic development in underserved communities in the United States, yet persistent disparities in business performance remain. Prior research suggests that Black- and Hispanic-owned microenterprises face lower profitability and revenue relative to their White-owned counterparts, reflecting structural constraints such as limited access to capital, professional networks, and digital resources. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in entrepreneurial decision-making, an important question is whether strategic AI use mitigates or reinforces these disparities. Drawing on the resource-based view (RBV) and critical race theory (CRT), this study examines whether strategic AI use moderates the relationship between …

Mapping And Diagnosing Local Climate Zones For Urban Heat Assessment And Planning In Tropical Cities, Inuwa Sani Sani, Adi Wibowo

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Rapid urbanization and rising heat risk are intensifying thermal stress and environmental degradation in tropical cities. This study applies the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) framework to examine how urban morphology influences land surface temperature (LST) and to support evidence-based urban planning and climate adaptation in Makassar, Indonesia. We hypothesized that compact built LCZs (1–3) exhibit significantly higher LST than vegetated LCZs (A–G). Landsat 8 OLI and MODIS LST datasets (2013–2023) were processed in Google Earth Engine to evaluate decade-long urban development and thermal dynamics. LCZs were classified using a Random Forest (RF) model trained with approximately 100 manually digitized polygons …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

To enhance hydrologic modeling, the hydrology community has developed benchmark datasets (e.g. Model Parameter Estimation Experiment, MOPEX), providing standardized data for model evaluation and parameter estimation. However, these datasets primarily focus on modeling natural hydrologic processes, leaving a critical gap in understanding the role of human influences. Here, we introduce the Coupled Hydrology-Human Activity Information (CHHAI) dataset, a benchmark dataset that integrates coupled human–water data from regions across all continents, excluding Antarctica. CHHAI incorporates data from 25 regions that cover various human impacts such as reservoir management, flood protection, river management policies, land use changes, and water use. Each basin …

Cocreating Polycentric Tourism Strategies Using Hackathons, James Hanrahan Dr, Mª Carmen Pardo-López, Mariana Aragao, Deirdre Byrne Dr Jul 2026

Cocreating Polycentric Tourism Strategies Using Hackathons, James Hanrahan Dr, Mª Carmen Pardo-López, Mariana Aragao, Deirdre Byrne Dr

Irish Journal of Tourism, Hospitality, Leisure and Event Research

Tourism destinations face increasingly complex challenges, including overtourism in core areas, underutilisation of peripheral regions, climate pressures, and fragmented governance. Polycentric tourism offers a promising response by distributing visitor flows, decision-making, and value creation across multiple interconnected destinations. However, despite its conceptual appeal, practical mechanisms for implementing polycentric tourism strategies remain underdeveloped. This paper examines how hackathons can function as governance instruments for co-creating and operationalising polycentric tourism strategies.

Drawing on theories of polycentric governance and collaborative innovation, the paper develops a Polycentric Tourism Hackathon (PTH) framework that positions hackathons as structured arenas for distributed decision-making, collective learning, and rapid …

Influence Of Peristalsis On The Hemodynamic Analysis Of Magnetohydrodynamic Jeffrey Fluid In A Two-Layered Narrow Channel, N. Lavanya, G. Ravi Kiran, M. Varun Kumar, K. Rajyalakshmi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

In this paper, an analytical study of MHD-influenced hemodynamic of Jeffrey fluid during peristaltic transport in a two layered narrow channel is presented, a phenomenon that has substantial ramifications for microcirculatory dynamics in the cardiovascular system. The model assumes a Jeffery fluid in the core area to encapsulate microstructural phenomena, including viscosity fluctuations, whereas the periphery area is treated as a Newtonian fluid. The governing equations for both regions are simplified and analytically solved under the long wavelength approximation. Using MATHEMATICA, a numerical investigation is carried out to examine the influence of various parameters, such as the magnetic parameters, amplitude, …

Not Two Selves But A Relational Field: A Relational Frame Theory Reading Of Gollum, Emilio R. López-Navarro Jul 2026

Not Two Selves But A Relational Field: A Relational Frame Theory Reading Of Gollum, Emilio R. López-Navarro

Journal of Tolkien Research

This article examines Gollum’s divided selfhood in The Lord of the Rings as a phenomenon constructed and enacted through language rather than as a simple moral or psychological split. Building on recent linguistic work on Gollum’s idiolect, it draws on Relational Frame Theory (RFT) as a descriptive framework for analyzing how speech organizes perspective, value, and action. The argument is literary rather than clinical: RFT is used not to diagnose Gollum, but to specify the verbal structures through which Tolkien renders inner conflict audible. Four relational processes are central to the analysis: deictic instability in shifts among “Sméagol,” “Gollum,” “we,” …
