From Classroom To Cell: Examining Protective Factors Against The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Ronald Smith Jul 2026

From Classroom To Cell: Examining Protective Factors Against The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Ronald Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Truancy and chronic absenteeism among adjudicated youth are significant concerns for educators, school administrators, policymakers, and juvenile justice stakeholders because persistent school disengagement may contribute to pathways associated with the school-to-prison pipeline. Grounded in Hirschi’s social bond theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between parental involvement, extracurricular activities, and teacher–student social bonds and truancy/chronic absenteeism among adjudicated youth. Secondary data were obtained from the Pathways to Desistance study, which included 1,070 adjudicated youth ages 14–17 from Maricopa County, Arizona, and Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Multiple linear regression was used to examine the relationships among …

Plaza Gardens Real Estate Corp. V. Pitts Jul 2026

Plaza Gardens Real Estate Corp. V. Pitts

All Decisions

Landlord commenced a holdover proceeding seeking to recover the premises under the Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL) on the ground of good faith withdrawal of the unit from the rental market under RPL §216(1)(i). The court dismissed the petition, holding that while GCEL provides withdrawal from the rental market as a ground for removal, a landlord invoking that ground must still satisfy the pleading requirements of RPAPL §741(4), and landlord failed to do so.

Department Of Housing Preservation And Development V. 2500 Bedford Llc

All Decisions

In this HPD-initiated HP action, the court denied the landlord's motion to dismiss the petition as duplicative of a separate tenant-initiated HP action. The court found that the prior tenant-initiated proceeding, which had been settled, does not preclude HPD from commencing a new action when new code violations arise. The court also noted it would not award duplicative civil penalties for the same underlying condition.

Regulated Intensity: Zoning, Capital, And The Financialization Of Midtown Manhattan, Ryan Lin Jul 2026

Regulated Intensity: Zoning, Capital, And The Financialization Of Midtown Manhattan, Ryan Lin

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Zoning regulations are often referred to as tools for managing urban growth. First introduced in the 1916 Zoning Resolution, these tools are meant to respond to NYC’s residents to overcrowding of buildings, loss of light and air, and the unchecked rise of early skyscrapers. However, in highly financialized cities such as Manhattan, these tools, once meant for the public good, have transformed into opportunities for greater capital growth. This paper focuses on the C5 zoning district in Midtown Manhattan to examine how regulatory tools such as Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and other Transferable DEvelopment Rights (TDRs) transform the legally permitted …

The Institutional Production Of Ethical War Across Modern Conflict, Katerina Udov Jul 2026

The Institutional Production Of Ethical War Across Modern Conflict, Katerina Udov

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

This paper argues that modern warfare operates through an ethical infrastructure that enables, rather than restrains, the use of violence. Contrary to the common assumption that moral frameworks such as Just War Theory function as safeguards against harm, the historical record shows that ethical language, humanitarian rhetoric, and democratic narratives serve as mechanisms to legitimize intervention, manufacture consent, and naturalize civilian suffering. Through case studies including Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, U.S.-backed coups in Latin America, and French intervention in Mali, the paper traces how political leaders, media institutions, and corporate actors frame war as a moral necessity while pursuing strategic and …

America The Monstrous: The Birth Of American Horror Fiction In The Long Nineteenth Century, Rachel Kietzman

Dissertations

American gothic works that center the affect of horror explore themes of abjection, inhumanity, and monstrosity that impede a coherent expression of American identity. By approaching these works through the lens of horror rather than only as Gothic works, a picture ofa visceral, embodied becoming takes shape: America is a monstrous birth in the most literal sense of the word, a sign and demonstration that unity and uniformity are not the same, that wholeness does not require conformity, and that political choices are paid for in flesh. In short, American horror fiction is the head of Medusa, an apotropaic sign …

Mammography: What Utahns Need To Know, Brie Sparks, Susan R. Madsen Jul 2026

Mammography: What Utahns Need To Know, Brie Sparks, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Mammography is a critical preventative health tool that enables early detection of breast cancer and improves the likelihood of successful treatment. In Utah, screening behaviors are shaped by access to care, personal perceptions, healthcare experiences, and broader social and structural factors. Understanding both measurable trends and attitudes toward preventative care provides essential context for improving screening rates. Together, these factors influence how, when, and whether Utah women utilize mammography services, ultimately impacting early detection outcomes across the state.

Regulating Manipulative Design Is Not Preempted By Cda 230 Or The First Amendment, Brett Frischmann, Peter Ormerod Jul 2026

Regulating Manipulative Design Is Not Preempted By Cda 230 Or The First Amendment, Brett Frischmann, Peter Ormerod

Faculty Publications

For over two decades, there has been a heated debate among legal scholars, activists, judges, and others about the scope of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. A persistent theme in those debates has been hyperbolic claims about the necessity of immunity from state laws for digital tech platforms and fearmongering that anything less than maximum immunity will destroy the Internet.

This Article argues that states retain considerable discretion to regulate digital platforms’ design and engineering decisions. We argue that manipulation, engineered behavior, and even habituation and normalization of engineered behavior by digital platforms are content-agnostic harms attributable to …

Subunit Composition Of The Katp Channels That Modulate Contractility Of Skeletal Muscle During Fatigue, Rosa Scala, Yuezhou Chen, Berk Mizrak, Gretchen A Meyer, Colin G Nichols

2020-Current year OA Pubs

ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels are among the most expressed ion channels in skeletal muscle sarcolemma. While all KATP subunits can be detected in skeletal muscles, transcripts are enriched for KCNJ11 and ABCC9, suggesting that noncanonical Kir6.2/SUR2A assembly may constitute the majority of sarcolemmal KATP channels, but there has been no systematic dissection of KATP makeup in skeletal muscles. Here, we used a unique collection of murine lines selectively lacking specific channel-forming subunits (knockout, KO), and combined a genetic and pharmacological approach to determine which subunits of KATP channels are functionally relevant for skeletal muscle contraction. Under fatiguing conditions, isometric tetanic …

Long-Term Inactivation Mediated By Different Fgf-A Homologues On Heterologously Expressed Nav1.2 Currents, Yenisleidy Lorenzo-Ceballos, Pedro L Martinez-Espinosa, Xiao-Ming Xia, Christopher J Lingle

2020-Current year OA Pubs

A-isoforms of cytosolic growth factor homologous factors (FGF11-14) mediate long-term inactivation (LTI) of voltage-dependent sodium (NaV) channels. LTI is a rapid onset process that is competitive with the fast inactivation (IF) intrinsic to NaV channels, with little or no interconversion between inactivated states. Since recovery from LTI is orders of magnitude slower than recovery from IF, repetitive depolarizations lead to use-dependent accumulation of NaV channels in slow recovery states, thereby limiting NaV availability during trains of action potentials. Of the two or more N-terminal splice variants of the various FGF homologues, LTI specifically arises only from the A-isoform of each …

Emotionally Coherent Procedural World Generation: Environmental Psychology As A Generative Framework For Automated 3d World Construction, Michael D. Conduit Jul 2026

Emotionally Coherent Procedural World Generation: Environmental Psychology As A Generative Framework For Automated 3d World Construction, Michael D. Conduit

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes a method and system for procedurally generating three-dimensional virtual environments whose spatial composition, asset placement, and atmospheric properties are driven by parameters derived from empirical environmental psychology research. The core innovation is the use of multi-dimensional emotional profile vectors — parameterised from validated human perception studies including prospect-refuge theory, vastness-awe research, and spatial density psychology — as the primary control surface for an automated world generation pipeline.

Unlike prior approaches that use aesthetic heuristics, noise-based randomness, or manual artist direction, the system described here encodes psychological research findings directly as generative constraints. The result is environments in …

In-File Stapled Freshness: Hash-Chain Validity Tokens Written Into A Frozen Self-Serialized Document Via A Length-Preserving Neutralized Zone, With Fail-Stale Offline Verification, Michael Benaudis Jul 2026

In-File Stapled Freshness: Hash-Chain Validity Tokens Written Into A Frozen Self-Serialized Document Via A Length-Preserving Neutralized Zone, With Fail-Stale Offline Verification, Michael Benaudis

Defensive Publications Series

Revocation of frozen offline credentials — single-file HTML documents, PDFs, or other self-serialized digital credentials verified without any network, server, or public-key infrastructure — is information-theoretically constrained: a file sealed at issuance cannot learn of a later revocation event unless some information reaches the verification context. This disclosure does not remove that channel; it reduces it to one short, public, unforgeable hash-chain token per validity period, relayable by any untrusted party, and relocates the freshness proof inside the credential file itself. At issuance, a hash-chain tip (Micali NOVOMODO style) and period parameters are embedded in the credential's signed core, attested …

Canonical Multi-Zone Neutralization For Self-Serialized Documents Carrying Heterogeneous Hybrid Signatures, A Self-Referential Integrity Digest, And A Post-Signing Timestamp Anchor, Michael Benaudis Jul 2026

Canonical Multi-Zone Neutralization For Self-Serialized Documents Carrying Heterogeneous Hybrid Signatures, A Self-Referential Integrity Digest, And A Post-Signing Timestamp Anchor, Michael Benaudis

Defensive Publications Series

A self-serialized digital document — a single HTML file, PDF, or archive — sometimes must embed, within its own byte stream, three mutually dependent cryptographic elements: a hybrid digital signature combining a classical algorithm (ECDSA P-256) with a post-quantum algorithm (ML-DSA-65, FIPS 204); a self-referential SHA-256 integrity digest computed over the document's own serialization; and a blockchain timestamp anchor reference (Bitcoin, Ethereum) whose value becomes known only after the document has been hashed and submitted for anchoring. Embedding all three inside one serialized body creates a circular dependency that naive ordering cannot resolve: signatures must cover content that sits next …

Proportional Transmit Power Allocation Based On Channel Quality In Multi‑Antenna Systems, Sangwook Suh, Scott Huang, Ayrton Chen, Guosen Yue, Han Kim, Taeyoon Kim, Cp Chiang, Peng Wu, Insoo Hwang Jul 2026

Proportional Transmit Power Allocation Based On Channel Quality In Multi‑Antenna Systems, Sangwook Suh, Scott Huang, Ayrton Chen, Guosen Yue, Han Kim, Taeyoon Kim, Cp Chiang, Peng Wu, Insoo Hwang

Defensive Publications Series

In cellular networks, a user equipment device utilizing multiple transmit antennas might experience high block error rates when a gain imbalance exists between transmission paths. To handle multi-antenna transmissions, conventional approaches might allocate an equal amount of transmission power across available antennas. However, this equal allocation might expend energy on attenuated channels, lowering an overall signal-to-noise ratio at a receiving station.

A method is disclosed that assigns transmit power proportionally based on an evaluated channel quality for each antenna path. The method evaluates a reference signal received power for individual paths and directs a larger portion of transmission power to …
