Starch-Based Bioplastic Materials For Packaging Industry, Murat Ates, Pinar Kuz
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
In this study, we performed the production of bioplastic from corn starch by condensation polymerization. We used a natural intensifier such as glycerin to make the corn starch into a bioplastic material. Bioplastic and its nanocomposites via carbon fiber microelectrode (CFME), TiO2 and nanoclay were synthesized to study its application in package industry. FTIR-ATR, TGA-DTA, SEM-EDX and mechanical analysis were taken to characterize the bioplastic based nanocomposites. We used different amounts of addition of CFME (0.2%, 0.5% and 1%), TiO2 (1%, 3% and 5%) and nanoclay (1%, 3% and 5%) to obtain the optimum condition for the bioplastic material. We …

The objective of this report is to assess the effects of using olive oil mill wastewater (OMW) and cheese whey on the production of concrete chemical admixture. Wastewater samples were taken locally from two factories in Izmir. Concrete chemical admixture combinations (waste water, polycarboxylate, molasses, defoamer, biocide and water) at different ratios were generated with statistical experimental design methods and the effects of some parameters, such as level of chloride (%), solid content (%), pH, density (gr/cm3), were investigated. Furthermore, concrete tests were performed to identify slump (cm) and strength (kgf/cm2) changes. The results showed that the addition of OMW …

Discovering Hidden Patterns In Turkish Construction Projects Delays Related To Project Characteristic, İsmail Cengiz Yılmaz
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
There are delays in delivering construction projects, which have great affects in all countries' economies, due to many factors and reasons and these delays bring many negative consequences. Checking the source of these consequences or minimizing their effects is very important in terms of time and cost savings in the construction sector, especially for countries which have a continuous improvement such as Turkey. Determination of project factors that will cause delay, analysis of their impacts and taking protective measures will help to reduce losses. Hereby in this study, the project factors that may cause to delays are identified and some …

Thermomechanical Characterization Of Particleboards From Powder Typha Leaves, Younouss Dieye
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
New composite boards with low-thermal conductivity produced from a mixture of powder Typha leaves and a binder as gum arabic have been developed. The goal of this paper was to investigate the effect of binder content on compressive strength and thermal properties of typha panels. The results showed that the panels with a binder content of 33.33–50 % had the thermal conductivity values ranging from 0.055 to 0.083 W.m-1.K-1, which was close to that of many natural insulating materials. The compressive strength values obtained were comparable to those of the lime – hemp concrete. This study showed that typha possesses …

Evaluation Of Urban Transport With International Examples, Zeynel Doğru, Mehmet Fatih Altan
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
The story of urbanization and transportation is as ancient as human history. Throughout history, people have been established their habitats near rivers, intersection points of roads and trade routes in alignment with strategical, cultural points or martial policies. Almost all of these are directly or indirect transportation elements. One needs to evaluate samples from different geographies comparatively to realize planning improvement. In this context, Turkey’s cities, especially major of them such as Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, and Bursa do not manifest uniform topographies and characteristics. Hence, it is beneficial to evaluate cities in other locations which resemble Turkey's cities to obtain …

Mechanical And Durability Performance Of Self Compacting Concrete Containing Fly Ash And Metakaolin, Rizwan A. Khan
Mechanical And Durability Performance Of Self Compacting Concrete Containing Fly Ash And Metakaolin, Rizwan A. Khan
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
This paper is concerned with Self compacting concrete (SCC) which is a highly flow-able, non-segregating concrete that can spread into place, fill the formwork and encapsulate the reinforcement without any need for vibration. The elimination of the need for compaction leads to better quality concrete and substantial improvement of working conditions. It compacts itself due to its self-weight and is de-aerated almost completely while flowing into the formwork. Thus, the two main properties specific to fresh SCC are its filling-ability and passing ability. In this paper, different mixes of SCC were prepared and these fresh properties were investigated through V-funnel …

Organizational Policy Initiatives For A Neurodiverse Workforce, Renae Taylor
Organizational Policy Initiatives For A Neurodiverse Workforce, Renae Taylor
ATU Scholars Symposium
Neurodivergent individuals make up a significant percentage of the population and yet lag in employment due to employment barriers of the traditional workplace. While the benefits of a diverse workplace are well documented, there is still a large deficit when it comes to neurodiversity equitable access. To attract and retain a neurodiverse workforce, organizations must make changes that align with research-backed methods for policy building and in turn change the organizational leadership focus to a transformational, growth-based framework.
This applied project focuses on organizational policy initiatives that support the neurodivergent employee, with an emphasis on accommodations and modifications, inclusion, and …
Investigating Silicon As A Candidate For Plant Synthetic Biology, Stephanie N. Nelms, Kai Herring, Luke Hanke, William Foley
Investigating Silicon As A Candidate For Plant Synthetic Biology, Stephanie N. Nelms, Kai Herring, Luke Hanke, William Foley
ATU Scholars Symposium
The physicochemical properties of silicon are closely related to carbon. Certain species of plants accumulate high amount of silicon, however, their physiological role and molecular mechanism of sequestration and distribution in plant tissues are poorly understood. The bonding potential of silicon is analogous to carbon and silicon is a key element propelling nanotechnology and digital revolution. Recent discoveries of silicon in Mars and the Moon along with metabolic engineering of enzymes that can incorporate and cleave silicon from organic compounds have consolidated the idea of silicon-based synthetic cellular lifeforms. Bibliometric analysis was used to evaluate the trend of research in …

Enhancing Embankment Dam And Levee Resilience Against Overtopping Erosion: The Muscatine Island Levee Project, W. R. Thompson, J. T. Leyh
5th International Seminar on Dam Protections Against Overtopping
HydroTurf® is an advanced revetment solution engineered to protect embankment dams and riverine levees from erosion caused by overtopping events. Its design provides an impermeable geomembrane protected by engineered turf with a high strength cementitious infill, resulting in a fiber reinforced high-strength concrete matrix. The system provides a durable and impermeable barrier against erosive forces.
The Muscatine Island Levee Improvement Project, situated along the Mississippi River in Iowa, exemplifies the application of HydroTurf. This initiative aimed to enhance flood protection for approximately 30,000 acres of commercial, industrial, and residential areas. A critical component was the construction of a hardened controlled …
