Deputized To Discriminate: The Dangerous Revival Of Ice “Task Force” Agreements, Yuwen Huyan
Deputized To Discriminate: The Dangerous Revival Of Ice “Task Force” Agreements, Yuwen Huyan
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, first implemented in 1996, authorizes local and state law enforcement agencies to enter into formal agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”). These agreements, known as Memoranda of Agreements (“MOAs”), deputize selected officers to perform certain federal immigration enforcement functions. There are two enforcement models: the jail enforcement model, in which officers identify individuals for ICE after an arrest, and the more controversial task force model, which allows officers to initiate immigration enforcement in the field—during traffic stops, patrols, or other community interactions. Once trained and certified by ICE, local officers …

Deportations And Latino Segregation: The Residential Impacts Of Interior Immigration Enforcement, Matthew Hall, Jacob S. Rugh, Hao Liang
Faculty Publications
The shift of immigration enforcement to local jurisdictions has intensified localized patterns of anti-immigrant sentiment, enabling the system of mass deportation to expand at an unprecedented scale. This study examines the effects of 287 (g) agreements, which empower local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, on Latino residential segregation. Using a quasi-experimental design that compares counties implementing 287 (g) with those that applied but did not implement, we find that these policies significantly slowed declines in Hispanic-white segregation, particularly in early-adopting Southern counties where enforcement was most aggressive. We find no evidence that the program altered patterns of segregation for …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
Cardiac fibroblasts (CF) are key players after myocardial infarction (MI), but their signaling is only incompletely understood. Here we report a first secretome atlas of CF in control (cCF) and post-MI mouse hearts (miCF), combining a rapid cell isolation technique with SILAC and click chemistry. In CF, numerous paracrine factors involved in immune homeostasis are identified. Comparing secretome, transcriptome (SLAMseq), and cellular proteome disclose protein turnover. In miCF at day 5 post-MI, significantly upregulated proteins include SLIT2, FN1, and CRLF1 in mouse and human samples. Comparing the miCF secretome at days 3 and 5 post-MI reveals the dynamic nature of …

The NHS faces a crisis of increasing demand, staff shortages, and limited resources, while an ageing population places mounting pressure on acute services.1 Many experts agree that moving from a reactive “diagnose and treat” model to a more proactive “predict and prevent” model is essential.2 Predictive prevention, which applies artificial intelligence (AI) to remotely monitored data from sensors and wearables to anticipate and address early signs of decline, could shift the balance of care from hospital to community for older adults. However, these innovations carry ethical and practical risks, such as algorithmic bias, data privacy breaches, and the potential to …

Bacterial Microbiomes In Different Depths Of Sand At The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Hays S. Roth
Honors Theses
Microbial communities in sand play essential roles in their ecosystems, yet little is known about how bacterial diversity and function vary across different sand depths. This study investigated bacterial microbiomes at varying depths (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 cm) on Biloxi East Beach, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and assays of extracellular enzyme activity. 11,161 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were identified across all samples, with the most abundant bacterial phyla being Planctomycetota, Gammaproteobacteria, and Bacteroidota. Depth had a significant impact on bacterial community composition, with surface layers having more diverse bacterial communities. Microbial diversity …

This paper explores the theory and practice of combining unpredictability in life with reverse thinking in modern jewelry design. Traditional jewelry design is often based on fixed aesthetics and strict craftsmanship. This study uses three concepts of jewelry design and clothing wear that break the conventions - a silver mask worn on the face, a skirt worn above the head and not touching the human body, and jewelry made of gallium that melts at human body temperature - as cases to analyze how to express the artistic concepts of "change" and "breaking boundaries" by breaking traditional rules and using material …

Antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) drugs are a new therapeutic modality to treat rare as well as common diseases. These drugs work to reduce disease by targeting the mRNA of the gene that causes the disease, therefore limiting the proteins that further propagate the signs and symptoms of the disorder. Many people who suffer from more severe diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), and a wide array of cancers, utilize ASO drugs for treatment, but the drug is also used with those suffering from more common diseases such as diabetes. The efficacy of ASO drugs to silence their mRNA …

Trends And Transport Of Tropospheric Ozone From New York City To Connecticut In The Summer Of 2023, Michele Iraci
Honors Scholar Theses
Tropospheric Ozone, or O3, is a criteria pollutant contributing to most of Connecticut and New York City’s poor air quality days. It has adverse effects on human health, particularly for high-risk individuals. Ozone is produced by nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds from fuel combustion reacting with sunlight. The Ozone Transport Region (OTR) is a collection of states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic United States that experience cross-state pollution of O3. Connecticut has multiple days a year where O3 values exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, requiring additional monitoring and standards because it falls in the OTR— partially due …

As the climate continues to warm, and municipal leaders look for cost-effective and timely approaches to urban sustainability, one increasingly sought-out approach is the use of tree canopy to cool neighborhoods. Despite widespread efforts to expand tree canopy in cities, an overwhelming body of evidence suggests that urban green space is declining across the U.S., yet little is known about the factors that propel these changes. Understanding the institutional and governance systems can help identify the opportunities for slow consistent declines. Using social network analysis (SNA) metrics, we examined stakeholder roles in power structures and decision-making processes within Portland, Oregon’s …
