The Rise Of Cyber Conflict As A Policy Tool: A Comparison Of The United States And The People's Republic Of China, Sophia Radzim
The Rise Of Cyber Conflict As A Policy Tool: A Comparison Of The United States And The People's Republic Of China, Sophia Radzim
Master's Theses
This thesis explores cyber incident trends and its effects on conflict resolution of interstate relationships between the U.S. and China. Key findings of this research discovered that the U.S. relies on diplomatic negotiations to resolve cyber conflicts and does not utilize an aggressive approach within the cyber domain. China, on the other hand, has aggressively expanded its cyber capabilities. They leverage cyber attacks to promote their technology, military, and economy sectors, while undermining the U.S.’ global status as a political leader and innovator. China’s dominance in cyberspace poses a great threat to the national security of the U.S. Through descriptive …

Master's Theses
The terror attacks on September 11, 2001 changed the world in an instant, leaving lasting effects on the United States and the international community. This thesis investigates whether the 9/11 attacks continue to serve as a motivating factor for individuals pursuing careers in the Criminal Justice and National Security fields, despite the passage of more than two decades since the event.
This study utilizes secondary research analysis to examine data from empirical studies conducted between 2006 and 2022, with a particular emphasis on students enrolled in Criminal Justice programs at institutions of higher education. Key variables explored include personal victimization, …
The Eugenic Sterilization Of Puerto Rican Women: A Case Of Us Interests And Religious/Spiritual Freedom, Anique Y. Jones
The Eugenic Sterilization Of Puerto Rican Women: A Case Of Us Interests And Religious/Spiritual Freedom, Anique Y. Jones
International Studies (MA) Theses
Between the 1930s and 1970s, approximately one-third of Puerto Rican women of childbearing age (20–49) were sterilized— the highest rate in the world during that time. Driven by U.S. political and economic interests, and underpinned by eugenic ideology, Governor Blanton Winship and President Franklin D. Roosevelt championed sterilization as a solution to the island’s perceived "overpopulation" and its associated problems: unemployment, disease, and poverty. While Puerto Rican women were exploited as instruments of U.S. policy, sterilization paradoxically became widely accepted as a form of birth control on the island. This thesis critically examines the power dynamics and collective responses that …
What Role Do Economic Interests Play In Improving Bilateral Relations Between Algeria And Morocco?, Sabrina Laib
What Role Do Economic Interests Play In Improving Bilateral Relations Between Algeria And Morocco?, Sabrina Laib
International Studies (MA) Theses
Tensions between Algeria and Morocco began after Algeria gained independence from France in 1962, culminating in the Sand War of 1963. Since then, various mediation efforts and economic reconciliation attempts have been initiated, but have consistently been hindered by differing stances—particularly regarding the Western Sahara conflict. I argue that economic interests, especially those in illicit trade, are impactful factors that have negatively affected the bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Morocco. To explain the factors facilitating bilateral relations, this project explores four variables: mediation attempts, regional development schemes, trade, and illicit economy. Qualitative data is used to provide historical-contextual and thematic …

A Fragile New World: An Analysis Of The History, Present, And Future Of The U.S. Global Fragility Act, Declan F. Coakley
International Studies (MA) Theses
In 2019, the U.S. Congress passed the Global Fragility Act with bipartisan support. (GFA). The act aimed to reform U.S. foreign aid and development, focusing on stabilization initiatives that proactively address the root causes of conflict before they escalate into full-blown violence. Despite the significant implications of the GFA for both domestic and international foreign policy, extant research examining the novel legislation remains limited and disjointed in its examination. This paper builds on previous studies by combining content analysis and qualitative interviews with a diverse group of professionals within the foreign aid sector to offer a comprehensive analysis of the …

Contracted Wars, Compromised Oversight: Private Military Companies In Iraq, Afghanistan, And The Decline Of U.S. Accountability Standards, Brianna N. Buzzell
International Studies (MA) Theses
The Global War on Terror, beginning in 2001, started U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, facilitating the expansion of Private Military Contractors (PMCs) through a combination of operational necessity, strategic policy decisions, and systemic oversight failures. Despite their growing role, PMCs operate in legal and oversight grey zones. Despite a growing body of work on PMC accountability, there remains little agreement on how U.S. military interventions created conditions for their proliferation. This paper examines how U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan facilitated the expansion of PMC influence, resulting in reduced oversight and accountability for both the U.S. government …

How Mental And Emotional Stress Impacts Vocal Phonation In Adolescent Singers, Samantha M. Thielen Pak
How Mental And Emotional Stress Impacts Vocal Phonation In Adolescent Singers, Samantha M. Thielen Pak
Graduate Thesis Collection
This study examines the relationship between mental/emotional stress and vocal phonation abilities in high school choir students. 17 pairs of General Health Questionnaires and Vocal Screenings were completed by four student participants. These questionnaires and screenings were completed on a weekly basis. Within the General Health Questionnaire, there were several negative correlations with “Concentration” from the General Health Questionnaire results, those being “Loss of Sleep” (r = -0.547, p = 0.023) and “Losing Confidence in Self” (r = 0.575, p = 0.016), as detailed in Table 3. The largest correlations to “Concentration” are “Under Strain” (r = -0.742, p = <.001) and “Feeling Unhappy” (r = -0.746, p = <.001). From the documented screenings, there was very little impact noted on the phonological abilities of the participants. Presence of “Non-Musical Sounds” had a strong correlation with “Tone Quality” (r = 0.683, p = 0.001), showing that there was an increase of non-musical sounds when tone quality had decreased in score.
“Death Leaves A Heartache No One Can Heal:” Musical Subversion In The Irish Caoineadh Tradition, Charissa Joy Garrigus
“Death Leaves A Heartache No One Can Heal:” Musical Subversion In The Irish Caoineadh Tradition, Charissa Joy Garrigus
Graduate Thesis Collection
My thesis details the subversive, inherently feminine nature of Irish caoineadh (keening). This research focuses on how a practice with pagan, druidic roots survived in a culture that was experiencing intense religious and structural upheaval including the arrival of Protestant English settlers, tensions with the Catholic church, and longstanding pagan traditions. I contend that early modern Irish lament (caoineadh/keening) was inherently subversive due to its feminine liminality, its origins from druidic ritual, and its musical, poetic, and lyrical content that was often condemnatory of patriarchal Christian and English power structures. This thesis investigates three main topics occurring from ancient times …

Development Of A Probabilistic Interaction Rule And Failure Pressure Model For Pipelines With A Colony Of Corrosion Defects, Kiswendsida J. Kere
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The interaction effect originating from a defect colony can pose a higher pipeline failure risk than the case when such possible interaction is not considered. Recognizing the limitations in existing models that can lead to inaccurate pipeline integrity assessment, the goal of this study is to develop a probabilistic interaction rule and predictive burst failure pressure model for pipelines with a colony of corrosion defects. First, a comprehensive database of burst failure pressure for pipes with a colony of corrosion is established that encompasses a wide range of influencing factors (e.g., spacing, defect sizes, and material properties) on the defect …

Spatiotemporal Changes In The Imperiled And Diverse Mussel Assemblage Of The Spring River In Kansas In Response To Known And Emerging Pollutants, Joshua Holloway
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Kansas was historically home to 50 species of freshwater mussels, of which 42 remain extant. The Spring River of southeastern Kansas is home to 34 of the remaining 42 mussels, many of which are imperiled. Elevated metal concentrations that resulted from past lead and zinc mining in the Tri-State Mining District historically imperiled Spring River mussels, but this threat has abated over the last 20 years. Ammonia pollution may have replaced the threat of metals, however, with potentially severe consequences for Spring River mussels. Our objectives were to evaluate contemporary mussel assemblage structure, in addition to spatiotemporal trends in the …

Elliptic Curves And Their Applications In Cryptography, Mercedes Danange Moll
Theses
This thesis explores the mathematical foundations and cryptographic applications ofelliptic curves. To understand elliptic curves, we start by introducing group theory, ring theory, and field theory. Then, we dive into elliptic curves, their algebraic structure, and the group law defined on their points. We then examine elliptic curves over finite fields, leading to the discrete logarithm problem and key cryptographic applications such as Weil Pairings, the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, Digital Signature Algorithm, and Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithms. Using the theory and its application, this thesis highlights the significance of elliptic curves in modern cryptography.

Black Women During The Great Migration: Transitions From Sharecropping To Black Metropolis, Ryan Daye
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The origin of the dissertation came about as me being the only southerner within the group of individuals completing the MALS Program. While studying Cultural studies, I began to take a focus on the Great Migration of black Americans migrating from the South to other regions of the United States. As a southerner, I was aware of the migration patterns but never went in-depth on the subject because I felt no connection. While studying, I noticed the perception of black women who were being used as subjects. Women who were being forced out of their southern situations because of segregation, …
Particle-Based High-Fidelity Interface Tracking Algorithms, Taiyuan Zhang
Particle-Based High-Fidelity Interface Tracking Algorithms, Taiyuan Zhang
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Accurate interface tracking is essential in simulating multiphase flows, material deformation, and other physical phenomena involving evolving geometries. In this thesis, we present an adaptive dual-particle representation for high-fidelity interface tracking. By combining two types of particles—feature particles and sample particles—we construct an implicit representation that captures fine geometric details. This representation is evolved explicitly using a velocity flow field, enabling accurate and adaptive tracking of dynamic interfaces. We further propose a particle level set method on the flow map, leveraging the state-of-the-art accuracy of particle-based advection. By integrating this approach with the particle level set framework, we achieve fourth-order …
Fiction For Feminist Jurisprudence: The Power Of The Literary Reality In Feminist Legal Scholarship, Elia M. O'Hara
Fiction For Feminist Jurisprudence: The Power Of The Literary Reality In Feminist Legal Scholarship, Elia M. O'Hara
All Theses And Dissertations
This paper asks what can it mean when we take women's stories and their realities seriously and allow them to paint a more nuanced portrayal of life and law? I will argue that a feminist legal theory — which aims to recognize and remedy the subordination of women seen through the legal system — needs a literary counterpart. Furthermore, I will argue that subtleties and nuances that make literature so alluring to us can also benefit in part from the structure and clarity that feminist jurisprudence can offer. One of my central aims is to show that we can create …

Social media culture is prevalent today, which encourages inclusion, exclusion, self-doubt, bullying, and other positive and negative social and emotional learning (SEL). Children are exposed to social media which has both positive and negative daily consequences. The prognosis and remission rates of anxiety are declining, with the risk of maladaptive regulation symptoms. A strong positive foundation of SEL promotes core identity, beliefs, morals, values, and interpersonal growth throughout a lifespan. Parenting styles (parent), the child’s psychosocial development (child), religious morals and values (religion), and psychotherapy (therapy) are influences of change that can help create healthy SEL. Therapy interventions are sought …
The Overrepresentation Of Juveniles Of Color In The Criminal Justice System, Shimila A. Stewart
The Overrepresentation Of Juveniles Of Color In The Criminal Justice System, Shimila A. Stewart
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The criminal justice system foundation historically was based on discriminatory and racial undertones for people of color; hence, the significance of mass incarceration in the United States. The juvenile justice system often parallels and mimics the adult penal system. Thus, many of the same racial disparities continue to exist in the juvenile system, as do the adult system. The prevalence of racial disparities within the juvenile justice system has led to the overrepresentation of juveniles of color. Systemic racism has been significant to the overrepresentation of juveniles of color in the juvenile justice system. There are extenuating barriers and disadvantages …

Drug development has become increasingly time-consuming, costly, and risky in recent years. There is significant potential for improving clinical trial designs, particularly for phase II trials, which play a critical role in the drug development process. Innovative methods are especially necessary for addressing key challenges in phase II trials in terms of dose-ranging study, patient population selection, and decentralized clinical trials (DCTs). This dissertation presents a comprehensive set of methodologies that address these critical issues with three projects. The first project introduces a Bayesian adaptive dose-ranging design that integrates both efficacy and toxicity data to evaluate each dose comprehensively. The …
Identification Of Mitochondrial Defects And Metabolic Consequences In Lynch Syndrome-Related Endometrial Cancer, Mikayla Bowen
Identification Of Mitochondrial Defects And Metabolic Consequences In Lynch Syndrome-Related Endometrial Cancer, Mikayla Bowen
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Lynch syndrome (LS), defined by mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes including MSH2, carries a 60% lifetime risk of developing endometrial cancer (EC). Mismatch repair deficiency (MMRd) causes hypermutability, which is assumed to be the main driver of LS-related EC development. However, incomplete penetrance of EC development in women with LS suggests that other modulators are at play. The broad hypothesis of this dissertation is that MMRd causes consequences beyond hypermutability to impact LS-related EC development. Recent studies utilizing our lab’s Msh2-deficient mouse model for LS-EC revealed mitochondrial dysfunction in EC pathogenesis. This new insight led to the …
Dual-Criterion Dose Finding Designs For Phase I Clinical Trials, Yunlong Yang
Dual-Criterion Dose Finding Designs For Phase I Clinical Trials, Yunlong Yang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The primary objective of Phase I oncology trials is to assess the safety and tolerability of novel therapeutics. Conventional dose escalation methods identify the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) based on dose-limiting toxicity (DLT). However, as cancer therapies have evolved from chemotherapy to targeted therapies, these traditional methods have become problematic. Many targeted therapies rarely produce DLT and are administered over multiple cycles, potentially resulting in the accumulation of lower-grade toxicities, which can lead to intolerance, such as dose reduction or interruption. To address this issue, we proposed dual-criterion designs that find the MTD based on both DLT and non-DLT-caused intolerance. …
