Recipe To Remember: An Exploration Of Self-Publishing Creative Agency, Janet L. Gerges May 2025

Recipe To Remember: An Exploration Of Self-Publishing Creative Agency, Janet L. Gerges

Honors College Theses

As a poet, I have learned some of the ins and outs of traditional poetry publication—which is anything but conventional—through other research endeavors. Majoring in creative writing at Pace University has given me access to a plethora of resources regarding ways to publish, including the atypical route of self-publishing zines, through the Pace Zine Library. Zines are an ultimately free creative outlet that many artists use to display multimedia work and produce a publication of a different, more homemade quality than that of traditionally published work.

The traditional, more harrowing approach to poetry publication is to break out by publishing …

The Effect Of Defendant Race And Race Salience On Jury Verdicts, Emerson Allen May 2025

The Effect Of Defendant Race And Race Salience On Jury Verdicts, Emerson Allen

Senior Honors Theses

Researchers have reported conflicting findings about whether mock jurors are more, less, or equally likely to convict Black defendants in mock trials as compared to White defendants. Likewise, past studies have led researchers to disagree on the effect of race salience at trial on verdicts. I therefore examined whether Black defendants were convicted more often than White defendants, as well as whether making race salient in the defense closing argument would reduce guilty verdicts. I randomly assigned 207 participants to read one of four abbreviated trial transcripts in which defendant race (Black, White) and race salience (present, absent) were manipulated …

Prescription For Progress: A Retention Plan To Heal The Dying Nurse Workforce, Margaret Curd May 2025

Prescription For Progress: A Retention Plan To Heal The Dying Nurse Workforce, Margaret Curd

Senior Honors Theses

The United States is currently facing an unprecedented nursing shortage which stems from many variables, including a lack of clinical rotation sites for students, increased burnout among current nurses, and a growing retiring workforce. The proposed solution develops a software-based security awareness training program that integrates interactive activities, realistic scenarios, and gamified learning methods to engage employees and facilitate long-term behavioral change towards security awareness. Future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed training program in real-world scenarios to measure its impact on …

Navigating Eating Disorders Through Counseling, Alyssa M. Pelella May 2025

Navigating Eating Disorders Through Counseling, Alyssa M. Pelella

Senior Honors Theses

Many different characteristics are involved in eating disorders, each of which helps show that counseling is important to the recovery process. An eating disorder that goes untreated can lead to a higher degree of symptoms over time, like the use of waist trainers, laxatives, and calorie counting. These factors can cause guilt in an individual and can hinder relationships. Males are often overlooked in eating disorder instances, as is the Napoleon complex. Athletes are typically at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder as they are constantly working out, and many times are focused on a goal to fit …

Antimicrobial Eats: How Food Additives Are Contributing To Obesity Via The Gut Microbiome, Olivia Mankos May 2025

Antimicrobial Eats: How Food Additives Are Contributing To Obesity Via The Gut Microbiome, Olivia Mankos

Senior Honors Theses

The typical modern diet is brimming with food additives used in food processing. Additives such as antibiotic residues, GMOs, pesticide residues, anti-caking agents, emulsifiers, artificial sweeteners, colorants, flavor enhancers, and preservatives. Most of these additives seem to shift the gut microbiome towards more pro-inflammatory signals. When all these additives are considered as an amalgam, such as with the modern processed diet, the ramifications on the gut microbiome are concerning. Obesity, which is characterized by low-level chronic inflammation, is likely exacerbated by these food additives. Consequently, most of these additives should be avoided or banned for optimal health.

The parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a highly ubiquitous parasite that latently infects an estimated 33% percent of the global population. Toxoplasmosis is of obvious clinical significance due to the extremely high risks to the unborn who contract it congenitally. Less attention has been given to a more subtle aspect of latent infection, which is the behavioral alterations that are commonly experienced by those who contract the parasite. Infected individuals commonly display a variety of altered behaviors, such as increased aggression and risk-seeking behaviors, depression, higher tendency towards suicide and self-directed violence, a loss of fear response, and a greatly increased …

U.S. Tax Treatment Of Crypto Assets, Kylie May Schmitt May 2025

U.S. Tax Treatment Of Crypto Assets, Kylie May Schmitt

Senior Honors Theses

Disagreements exist surrounding the proper definition and tax treatment of cryptocurrency. The IRS views crypto assets as a type of intangible property, and most guidance regarding how to include income or loss from cryptocurrency on the relevant tax forms stems from this classification. Crypto asset transactions create either ordinary or capital income or loss, depending on the taxpayer’s reason for holding the assets. This requires keeping track of the cryptocurrency’s fair market value at the time of receipt and disposition. While researchers have not reached a unanimous conclusion, most identify problems with this treatment and instead propose alternative methods, such …

The Critical Ecosocial Framework: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Integrating Ant-Racist, Anti- Oppressive, And Ecosocial Work Practice, Georgianna Dolan-Reilly May 2025

The Critical Ecosocial Framework: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Integrating Ant-Racist, Anti- Oppressive, And Ecosocial Work Practice, Georgianna Dolan-Reilly

PhD of Social Work

The social work profession has an ethical obligation to address racism, oppression, and environmental injustices. However, multilevel resistance and challenges to acknowledging and confronting these interconnected issues persist both within the profession and throughout broader society. By neglecting to integrate environmental justice and Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression (ARAO) into practice, the social work profession remains complicit in the very cycles of oppression (white supremacy, colonialism, ableism, sexism etc.) that we seek to dismantle. Presently, no research broadly examines the use of ARAO by social workers engaged in environmental, climate change, environmental disasters, or other place and nature-based topics (ecosocial workers). Further, …
