Glitter, Gold, And Glory: The Social, Economic, And Political Legacy Of The Dollar Princesses In Gilded Age Anglo-America, Makayla Elise Talley May 2025

Glitter, Gold, And Glory: The Social, Economic, And Political Legacy Of The Dollar Princesses In Gilded Age Anglo-America, Makayla Elise Talley

Masters Theses

In the late nineteenth century, America and Europe were experiencing drastically different financial situations. While the British aristocracy struggled to maintain their estates and lavish lifestyle due to the repeal of the Corn Laws and agricultural decline, America’s newly self-made men celebrated the expansion of the American frontier, dominating industries and amassing huge fortunes. As a result, the dollar princesses emerged—wealthy American heiresses who married European nobility, stereotypically “trading” money for an aristocratic title and prestige. Many of these transatlantic marriages, however, were actually a result of love or parental/societal force. Through an analysis of the reasons behind the dollar …

A Showman And A Scholar: Bascom Lamar Lunsford And The Preservation Of Traditional Appalachian Music, Benjamin Grist May 2025

A Showman And A Scholar: Bascom Lamar Lunsford And The Preservation Of Traditional Appalachian Music, Benjamin Grist

Masters Theses

Appalachian musical culture is well-known in the modern day. Between old time, bluegrass, country, and clogging, people around the world know and enjoy the musical traditions of the mountains. However, in the 1920s, Appalachian culture was in serious danger of going extinct. A mix of industrialization destroying local economies, an influx of rich outsiders moving to the region, and the people of Appalachia trying to distance themselves from their impoverished lifestyles, traditional Appalachian music and culture was being crushed on one hand and abandoned on the other. Realizing that the region's musical traditions were disappearing, several scholars tried to record …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Office hours are a part of nearly all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, with many academic and affective benefits for students who attend. However, despite their ubiquity, there has only been limited past work examining the sources of knowledge students draw from to shape their perceptions of office hours, as well as the factors that influence students' experiences in STEM course office hours. Here, we conducted semistructured interviews with 20 students enrolled in an introductory STEM course to investigate what motivates students to attend STEM course office hours, the factors that shape their experiences in office hours, and …

Many Meanings: A History Of Memory At The Meeker Home Museum, Kathleen Henry May 2025

Many Meanings: A History Of Memory At The Meeker Home Museum, Kathleen Henry

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

While public historians strive to provide accurate, contextual, and nuanced interpretations of the past, public and community memory of the past is powerful, and more concerned with identity and validation than it is with historical accuracy and complexity. These intersections of history and memory in America are complex, and have been explored for several decades by historians such as Ari Kelman, Seth Bruggeman, and David Wrobel. As a case study of the intersections of history and memory in a historic house museum, the Meeker Home Museum in Greeley, Colorado, reflects powerful narratives of past community memory, resulting in a static, …

Coming Of Age In A Time Of Darkness: Young Southern White Women During The American Civil War, Kylie Wroot May 2025

Coming Of Age In A Time Of Darkness: Young Southern White Women During The American Civil War, Kylie Wroot

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The American Civil War is one of the most researched eras in history, but that does not mean that research will ever be complete. Historians are always discovering aspects of the war that had been largely ignored. One emerging topic has been the lives of young women and their experiences during the conflict. James MacPherson has analyzed several aspects of the war, including why its history is still relevant today. Amy Murrell Taylor and James Marten have both researched family life and children’s experiences during the war. Other historians like Drew Gilpin Faust, Giselle Roberts, and Victoria Ott have focused …

Caudillismo, Nationalism, And Populism: An Analytical Approach To The Story Of Getúlio Vargas And The Estado Novo, 1930-1945, Chris Michael Taylor Reeves

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Brazil in the 1930’s and 1940’s is a case study of the influences that national and transnational ideologies had on its government and society. The result of these influences being the rise and fall of government systems and dictatorships. Brazilian social and political ideology during this time is well documented from works on nationalism, populism, the concept of the caudillo or caudillismo, and issues of transnationalism. Other works in this field refer to integralism and Tenentismo as well as assessments of authoritarianism. However, more work needs to be done on the connections between these concepts and their effects on government, …

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

In June 1967, a group of Indigenous Peoples met at Mato Paha (Bear Butte, SD). The meetings were called due to disturbing reports and visions related to Indigenous Ancestral remains burial goods, or other sacred items on display in museums and repositories. They also discussed the continued desecration of sacred sites, and how these actions denied Indigenous Peoples of their human rights. The meeting a Mato Paha became the catalyst for what is now known as the Repatriation Movement. Based on grassroots organizing, the Repatriation Movement direct action, gatherings, legal action, and public relations to develop national repatriation law and …

Harmonic Classification Of Different Lighting Technologies Using Empirical Mode Decomposition And Support Vector Machines, Ahmad Farid Abidin, Mohd Abdul Talib Mat Yusoh, Abdul Hafiz Kassim, Nik Hakimi Nik Ali

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The impact of excessive harmonic distortion on electrical distribution networks highlights the critical need to understand harmonics in different lighting technologies to detect sources of issues and their effects. The increasing prevalence of nonlinear loads in power systems has contributed to significant harmonic pollution, deteriorating power line quality. This paper aims to address this issue by focusing on power line frequency detection and the classification of lighting technologies, combining empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with the one-versus-one support vector machine (OVO-SVM) approach. EMD is utilized to analyze signals through intrinsic mode functions, preserving the signal’s characteristics while extracting features related to …

Representation Of African Countries And Sino-Africa Relations In Chinese Newspapers, Zheng Zhu May 2025

Representation Of African Countries And Sino-Africa Relations In Chinese Newspapers, Zheng Zhu

Publications and Research

China’s neocolonialist expansion and domination in African continent has been well documented and extensively studied by scholars across various fields and disciplines. But what these studies didn’t pay attention to, or what they failed to pay enough attention to, was the ways this type of neo-colonialist exploitation was legitimated and justified by the powerful media outlets that support the Chinese government and have strong impact on public perceptions of the domestic and global situations. This research project aims to fill that gap by examining three Chinese newspapers’ coverage of African countries and their complex business relations with the Chinese government. …

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains the leading cause of preventable substance use-related deaths in the U.S. Each year, more than 1 million Americans seek hospital care for OUD-related issues. However, they often receive inadequate treatment and face barriers such as limited overdose prevention education, delays in medication initiation, and insufficient post-discharge follow-up. Nurses are well-positioned to improve inpatient OUD treatment, yet qualitative research suggests they often have limited knowledge and negative attitudes toward OUD, which can decrease the level of compassion and empathy nurses have toward people with OUD. Validated instruments, such as the Care Behavior Index (CBI-6) and …

Interteach: The Effects Of Active Engagement Compared To Passive Lectures, Bridget A. Barrett May 2025

Interteach: The Effects Of Active Engagement Compared To Passive Lectures, Bridget A. Barrett

Thesis Projects

Previous research has indicated how Boyce and Hineline’s (2002) interteaching technique is an effective teaching approach compared to traditional methods. Although researchers have examined the efficacy of various components within interteaching, few have altered the lecture component to increase active engagement. Saville et al., (2011) compared the effects of lectures (delayed, regular, and none), concluding no significant difference in performance between delayed and regular lectures within interteaching. Although delaying the lecture showed no difference in performance, the study concluded that removing the lecture component affected test scores. The current study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of the lecture component …

Collins, Theresa A. Freeman, Ryan E. Tomlinson

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Debilitating pain is the primary clinical feature of osteoarthritis (OA) that drives the enormous healthcare costs. Osteoarthritis-related pain is often treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which effectively relieve pain and inflammation by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Antibodies directed against nerve growth factor (NGF) were tested some time ago as an alternative potential analgesic for musculoskeletal pain, including osteoarthritis-related pain. Unfortunately, clinical development of these drugs was put on hold due to adverse outcomes - primarily rapidly progressive osteoarthritis. Both prostaglandin synthesis and NGF have been implicated as critical mediators of strain adaptive bone remodeling, which may play a role …

How Certain Is The Continuity Of The Panama Canal And How Will It Affect The Global Supply Chain Industry?, Enmanuel Rodriguez Correa

Honors Theses

The Panama Canal, a critical artery of global trade, is under mounting threat from prolonged droughts, water scarcity, and evolving geopolitical dynamics, casting doubt on its long-term viability. This thesis investigates the continuity of the Panama Canal’s operations amid intensifying climate change, and assesses the broader implications for the global supply chain. As the canal facilitates approximately 5% of global maritime trade and provides billions in annual cost savings to shipping companies, any disruption poses severe consequences for global commerce, economic stability, and trade logistics.

The analysis begins by situating the canal within its historical and geopolitical context, emphasizing its …

Scared Straight: Investigating The Psychological And Moral Dimensions Of Horror, Angelica Martinez

Masters Theses

This research examines the psychological and moral dimensions of the horror genre through qualitative analysis, with particular emphasis on its potential to convey ethical and spiritual meaning. While often dismissed as mere entertainment, horror frequently engages with profound questions of morality, fear, and the human condition. This study argues that horror, especially in its psychological, apocalyptic, and religious forms, serves as a vehicle for moral instruction and reflection. By tracing thematic developments from the 1970s to contemporary expressions of the genre, the research identifies a resurgence of interest in spiritually charged narratives. The findings suggest that horror can play a …

A Deconstruction Of The American Dream Through An Analysis Of 'The Great Gatsby', Juliet Hila Katherine Sage May 2025

A Deconstruction Of The American Dream Through An Analysis Of 'The Great Gatsby', Juliet Hila Katherine Sage

Masters Theses

This thesis addresses the physiological, social, relational, and spiritual issues associated with materialism through Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. It examines wealth and prosperity, “The American Dream” through Jay Gatsby, and argues that Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship was shaped by Fitzgerald’s personal life experiences. Fitzgerald concludes that financial success and societal achievement cannot replace human connections. Through the character Jay Gatsby, Fitzgerald illustrates that obtaining “The American Dream” does not guarantee success in all areas of one’s life. This paper dives deeper into the psychological, social, and spiritual ramifications of materialistic gain. As a result, the premise of this thesis concludes …

The Prophet Jeremiah As A Type Of Messiah, Jc Cross May 2025

The Prophet Jeremiah As A Type Of Messiah, Jc Cross

Masters Theses

How did Jesus interpret the prophet Jeremiah? Did Jeremiah function as a typological precursor to the Messiah? These questions warrant a renewed scholarly examination. While the book of Jeremiah has been the subject of extensive academic inquiry, particularly its first chapter, little research has focused on the prophet’s personal experiences as a foreshadowing of the Messiah or the textual allusions within the book to a messianic figure. Jesus repeatedly asserted that those well-versed in the Hebrew Scriptures should recognize the messianic foreshadowing present in the prophetic texts. Jesus’ disciples reinforce this interpretive framework. While a comprehensive analysis of how all …

Yesterday, Today, And Forever: Preserving Traditional Hymns, Randi Martin May 2025

Yesterday, Today, And Forever: Preserving Traditional Hymns, Randi Martin

Masters Theses

Music plays a vital role in today’s church. Throughout history, Christian songwriters have written hymns that have been passed down through generations of believers. In recent years, contemporary Christian songs have replaced traditional hymns in many churches. While a variety of music styles can be effectively used in worship, the disappearance of the traditional hymn robs churchgoers of the theological depth and timeless truths that live within many of these old hymns. These beautiful, soul-stirring hymns could be forgotten if action isn’t taken to preserve them for future generations of worshipers.

This thesis examines ways to preserve the heritage of …

The relationship between the JJAPT and aerobic performance has yet to be quantitatively defined. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the JJAPT and maximum oxygen uptake and ventilatory threshold (VT). Twenty-five Jiu Jitsu subjects participated in two test sessions a minimum of 48 hours apart. During one test session, descriptive statistics were collected, a self-guided treadmill warm-up was completed, followed by the Bruce graded exercise protocol. Ventilatory …

More Than 9 Lives: Improving Shelter Cat Intake And Adoption Rates, Arthur S. Loomis May 2025

More Than 9 Lives: Improving Shelter Cat Intake And Adoption Rates, Arthur S. Loomis

Masters Theses

Municipal animal shelters across the United States struggle to properly care for the cats housed in their facilities due to overpopulation. The sheer volume of cats entering shelters greatly outpaces the rate in which they are adopted out, resulting in an immense resource strain that too often results in the euthanasia of millions of shelter cats across the country each year. The enormous influx of cats is largely due to abandonment or considerable populations of feral, stray, or community cats living on the streets. In addition, shelter cat adoptions occur at a much slower pace, with many cats spending months, …

Apologetics And Storytelling In The Lord Of The Rings, Jeffrey R. Ober May 2025

Apologetics And Storytelling In The Lord Of The Rings, Jeffrey R. Ober

Masters Theses

Storytelling has been used for Christian education since the Christian faith first began. The problem is that while storytelling is known as a strong message of communication that has been used throughout the ages; and while it is used by some apologists like C. S. Lewis; there are more opportunities for pastors and others to engage in apologetics and evangelism using storytelling. Christians can use stories to reach others for Christ, just as others throughout history have used stories and storytelling to communicate other traditions and ideas. While this is a good start, there are more opportunities for Christians to …

How Experts View The Legal System's Use Of Scientific Evidence, Shari Seidman Diamond, Richard Lempert May 2025

How Experts View The Legal System's Use Of Scientific Evidence, Shari Seidman Diamond, Richard Lempert

Articles

Legal scholars and courts frequently write about how scientific evidence is vetted and presented in legal proceedings, but the views of experts themselves have received little attention. Our research aims to fill that gap. This paper reports some of what we learned from a series of surveys we conducted, beginning with a survey in 2016 of scientists who had been elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.3 Subsequent surveys were directed to subscribers of the journal Science who identified as scientists and engineers and to self-identified experts who advertised their availability as experts to lawyers or …
