Nourishing The Living Tree: Vincent Macdonald And His Constitutional Thought, Preston Jordan Lim
Nourishing The Living Tree: Vincent Macdonald And His Constitutional Thought, Preston Jordan Lim

Since the enactment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadian judges have increasingly approached the Constitution through a living constitutionalist lens, adapting the Constitution to contemporary realities and treating the text as but one interpretive modality alongside purpose and context. The Supreme Court has rooted this living constitutionalism in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council’s judgment, Edwards v Attorney General of Canada, wherein Lord Sankey introduced the metaphor of the “living tree.” Justice Robert Sharpe and Professor Patricia McMahon have suggested that the “living tree metaphor remained a forgotten footnote until 1982.” Indeed, more formalist approaches towards …

We, as the current and immediate-past NAPCRG Trainee Committee, share our perspectives as an international and diverse group of primary care research trainees. In this essay, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for achieving a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive primary care workforce by reflecting on 2 main challenges: (1) insufficient support for underrepresented identities in medicine, and (2) inadequate integration within existing primary care teams. Within each of these challenges, we pose potential opportunities for improvement using a trainee lens.

Pelvic fractures during pregnancy, though rare, pose significant risks to maternal and fetal health, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach to management. These injuries are predominantly caused by high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents, and are associated with a high incidence of complications, including maternal hemorrhage, placental abruption, and preterm labor. Advances in diagnostic imaging, such as low-dose CT scans and MRIs, have improved diagnostic accuracy while minimizing fetal exposure to radiation. Similarly, biomechanically tailored surgical interventions and innovative treatment strategies, including minimally invasive fixation techniques, have enhanced maternal survival rates, reaching 95% when multidisciplinary care is implemented. Despite these advancements, …
Darkening Of The Global Ocean, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth
Darkening Of The Global Ocean, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The photic zones of the oceans – where sunlight and moonlight drive ecological interactions - are one of the most productive habitats on the planet, and fundamental to the maintenance of healthy global biogeochemical cycles. Ocean darkening occurs when changes in the optical properties of the oceans reduces the depth to which sufficient light penetrates to facilitate biological processes guided by sunlight and moonlight. We analysed a 9km resolution annual time series of MODIS Aqua’s diffuse attenuation coefficient of light at 490nm [Kd(490)] to quantify whether the oceans have darkened over the last twenty years, and the impact of this …

Background: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumours, with clinical behaviours ranging from benign to highly aggressive forms. The World Health Organisation classifies meningiomas into various grades, guiding prognosis and treatment. While surgery is effective for low-grade meningiomas, certain grade 1 tumours, as well as grade 2, 3, and recurrent cases are more aggressive and require new therapeutic approaches. Immunotherapy shows promise, with early-stage clinical trials demonstrating encouraging results. The tumour microenvironment (TME), particularly tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs), plays a pivotal role in tumour progression. TAMs influence tumour growth, metastasis, and immune evasion. However, their role in meningiomas, especially in …

Studying the relationships between longitudinal changes in omics variables and event risks requires specific methodologies for joint analyses of longitudinal and time-to-event outcomes. We applied two such approaches (joint models [JM], stochastic process models [SPM]) to longitudinal metabolomics data from the Long Life Family Study, focusing on the understudied associations of longitudinal changes in lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) with mortality and aging-related outcomes. We analyzed 23 LPC species, with 5,066 measurements of each in 3,462 participants, 1,245 of whom died during follow-up. JM analyses found that higher levels of the majority of LPC species were associated with lower mortality risks, with the …

Allele-Specific Vitamin D Receptor Binding Is Associated With Pediatric-Onset Multiple Sclerosis, Defne Yilmaz, Soe Mar, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The genetic basis of adult-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) is well-studied, but less is known about pediatric-onset MS (pedMS), comprising approximately 5% of all MS onsets. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have demonstrated evidence for a causal association between MS and both 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] serum levels and genetic variation related to vitamin D receptor (VDR) binding. The objective was to identify whether VDR binding variants (VDR-BVs) previously implicated in adult-onset MS were associated with pedMS using genetic instrumental variables (GIVs).
METHODS: Using previously identified VDR-BVs to construct individual GIVs with two-sample MR, we investigated associations with pedMS in …

The Canadian Press Views The 1908 American Presidential Election, Harvey Strum
Journal of 20th Century Media History
"How many people appreciate the tragedy of the defeat of Mr. Bryan," asked the anti-Bryan Toronto World on 5 November 1908. This expression of sympathy for the Great Commoner's defeat by Republican candidate William Howard Taft, represented the opinion of a minority of the Canadian press. Newspapers representing western agrarian progressives, trade unions, militant Protestant nativists, independent reformers, and social reform Liberals regretted Bryan's defeat since he symbolized reform that might creep across the 49th parallel. If Bryan's third defeat did not prompt the majority of Canadian editors to dance in the streets it did prompt them to raise their …

1960s Teen Fan Magazines And The Beatles: An Exploration Of Community, Fandom, And The Beatles Narrative, Allison Bumsted
Journal of 20th Century Media History
In the 1960s, before the days of the internet, there were few places a young person could read about popular music – as a limited number of print media outlets took popular music, especially rock, seriously. In order to read about popular music (beyond the reprinting of lyrics, industry news, or promotions), one would turn to newly developed teen-type and teen fan magazines like DIG or 16 Magazine, where pages were full of artists such as Elvis, Annette, Leslie Gore, Connie Francis, and Paul Anka. In 1964, the teen fan magazine reached a new height with the arrival of …
“To Prepare The Mind For Wonder”: Popular Science And Mass Media In The 1920s, Alexander Olson
“To Prepare The Mind For Wonder”: Popular Science And Mass Media In The 1920s, Alexander Olson
Journal of 20th Century Media History
This article examines the creation and development of the Science Service, a 1920s initiative aimed at popularizing science through mass media. Founded by biologist William Ritter and newspaper magnate Edward Scripps, the wire service sought to disseminate accurate scientific information to the American public via newspapers, radio, and other popular media. While Scripps favored a commercially viable, accessible style that used entertainment to hook readers, Ritter envisioned science journalism as a tool for democratic education and intellectual empowerment. These conflicting philosophies created lasting tensions within the organization around how to address challenges such as sensationalism, editorial independence, and public skepticism. …

Cross-Border Limitations And Exceptions To Copyright: “Powered By Ai”, Marketa Trimble
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
Businesses and institutions that wish to utilize copyright-protected works in multiple countries face a multiplicity of national copyright laws; although national copyright laws have been harmonized in accordance with several international treaties, and harmonized even more in the European Union member states by European Union legislation, countries’ copyright laws continue to vary. The multiplicity of national copyright laws raises costs of transnational operations, including for businesses and institutions that rely on limitations and exceptions to copyright (“L&Es”) in multiple countries. For example, AI companies might want to rely on L&Es to train and deploy their AI in multiple countries, as …

Colpodella species are free-living predatory protists that prey on algae, ciliates and bodonids using myzocytosis. Colpodella species have been reported in human and animal infections. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers targeting 18S rRNA genes of Cryptosporidium and piroplasms have identified Colpodella species in arthropods, host blood and feces, demonstrating the phylogenetic closeness of Colpodella species to the apicomplexa. However, in human, animal and arthropod hosts, the life cycle stages of Colpodella are unknown. In this literature review, we provide an overview of the widespread occurrence of Colpodella species in ticks, and pathogenicity in humans and animals. We discuss methods …

A Systematic Review Of Brief Cognitive Test Used Among The Veteran Population, Joel Mcpherson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The practice problem this DNP project addressed was the lack of a of consensus for a brief cognitive screening (BCS) tool that can be most predictive of mild cognitive disorder (MCI) and dementia in a Veteran Affairs (VA) outpatient clinic. Addressing this gap in practice is important because the veteran population may be at increased risk of MCI and dementia due to age, a history of traumatic brain injury, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This DNP project was a systematic review of the literature. A population, exposure, outcome (PEO) framework and the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance (RE-AIM) theory guided …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The number of reactivations increased in the Güzelyalı-Erenköy landslide area after 2013 in Çanakkale, Türkiye, where historical landslide activity has been recorded since 1875. This area is home to numerous summer residences and experiences ongoing slow-moving landslide activity along a 400-m-long slope, extending from the heavily trafficked Çanakkale-İzmir highway to the coastline. In this study, the nature of the reactivations was evaluated by considering the conditioning and triggering factors that contributed to the landslide. The evaluation was based on geochemical analyses, field observations, geoelectric measurements, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data. The results revealed that the sliding occurred along a …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In this study, we present petrographical and microanalytical (EPMA, LA–ICP–MS) results of apatites associated with Fe–Ti±P mineralization in the XV deposit in the BSMP. Apatite is predominantly observed as subhedral to euhedral, homogeneous grains, with no zoning or inclusions. Geochemically, apatite is fluorapatite of magmatic origin, with Cl/OH and Cl/F ratios of <0.05 and 0.01 to 0.07, respectively. Apatites from XV and other IOA deposits in the BSMP display a high F/Cl ratio, which is likely the main characteristic of IOA–type deposits such as the Kiruna-type deposit. Apatites from both rock types (gabbro and pyroxenite) exhibit similar rare earth elements (REEs) and multitrace element patterns, indicative of a shared origin. The highly light rare earth elements (LREEs)–enriched pattern in chondrite–normalized fractionation trends, along with positive Eu and slight negative Ce anomalies, as well the high (La/Sm)N and (La/Yb)N ratios of XV apatite, further corroborates the magmatic genesis of fluorapatite. The Eu/Eu* and Ce/Ce* ratios in XV rocks imply a high oxidation condition, as well as other IOA deposits in BSMP. The sulfur content is less than 1 wt% and shows a positive correlation with SiO2, implying coupled dissolution–reprecipitation of primary fluorapatite. Considering the geological setting of XV and other IOA deposits in the BSMP, the parental magma(s) appear to have originated from oxidizing Fe-Ti±P-rich magma(s), likely formed within an extensional postcollisional setting, influenced by the Proto–Tethys and Central Iranian Microcontinent (CIMC) convergence events.

Background: Gun-related homicide remains a persistent public health crisis in the United States, with over 48,000 firearm-related deaths reported in 2022, including 19,651 homicides and 27,032 suicides. Despite frequent calls for tighter gun control, firearm access alone does not explain the complexity of violence. Objective: This commentary aims to unpack the socioeconomic, psychological, and biological drivers of gun-related homicide and propose integrative, evidence-based solutions that extend beyond legislative reform. Methods: We synthesized data from peer-reviewed literature, national crime and health databases (e.g., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Federal Bureau of Investigation), and international reports. We examined patterns related …

Asian American Pacific Islander Representation In Middle School Social Studies, Erin Dorothy Mccarthy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to recent studies, Asian American history has been misrepresented or omitted from the overall narrative of American history in standards, textbooks, and curricula. The problem was that Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) perspectives were missing and underrepresented in the middle school social studies curriculum in Wisconsin.
