Evaluation Of Telephone Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Performance In Current Practice In Saudi Arabia, Meshary Binhotan, Joanne Turnbull, Graham Petley, Nawfal Aljerian, Mohammad Altuwaijri
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a global health problem with a low survival rate. Telephone cardiopulmonary resuscitation (T-CPR) guidance by emergency medical services (EMS) dispatchers can improve CPR performance and, consequently, survival rates. Accordingly, the American Heart Association (AHA) has released performance standards for T-CPR in current practice to improve its quality. However, no study has examined T-CPR performance in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate T-CPR performance in the Saudi Arabian EMS system.
Methods: A retrospective observation of OHCA calls in current practice was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. OHCA calls were reviewed to identify those …

Damon Landor v. Louisiana Department of Corrections and Public Safety
Appeal from the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana, No. 3:21-cv-733 The Honorable Shelly D. Dick, Chief Judge
From the Summary of the Argument
The Fifth Circuit should rehear en banc the panel decision in this case because it presents a “question of exceptional importance” under Fed. R. App. P. 35: whether the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) authorizes monetary damages. This issue is exceptionally important for two reasons.

The Prevalence Of Covid-19 Misinformation Among High School Students And Its Influence On National Public Health Perception, Isha Patel
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
The global COVID-19 pandemic brought attention to national public health perception and the detriments of medical misinformation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the extent to which susceptibility to common COVID-19 virus and vaccine misconceptions correlate with the high school students’ perception of public health. A survey was distributed to 61 high school students, and it was found that there is a weak negative correlation between acceptance of COVID-19 virus and vaccine misconceptions and national public health perception. The results, however, indicated a prevalence of misconceptions surrounding COVID-19 among participants. Overall, 52.5% of participants rate public health as …

As the United States works to grow its defense partnership with the Philippines, the country continues to fight instability and insecurity amidst a lengthy battle against insurgent and terrorist groups.[i],[ii],[iii] As the overlap between urban areas and conflict zones increases, and with violent groups’ use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against government forces, the danger to civilians escalates.[iv] This paper provides a deeper understanding of how the prevalence of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and the use of IEDs in the Philippines fuel the realities of insurgency and humanitarian danger in the country. Furthermore, using Golden …

Press Freedom Under Threat In Europe: Slapps And Democracy, Maya Oleary-Cyr
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
This paper critically examines the legal systems of European countries and their relationship to press freedom, particularly the vexatious legal threats used by government officials and corporations to silence journalists. These legal threats are known as SLAPPs (strategic lawsuits against public participation) and their use has increased exponentially in the last decade. Although the issue is global, this research analyzes the issue through the lens of Greece, Italy, and Hungary. As member states, each one of these countries has an obligation to uphold the democratic standards put forth by the EU. Journalists are a vital aspect of the democratic process …

Keeping Fair Chance Laws Fair: Implications For Employers And Employees Given The Expansion And Variety Of Fair Chance Laws In The United States, Caitlin T. Gaines
Keeping Fair Chance Laws Fair: Implications For Employers And Employees Given The Expansion And Variety Of Fair Chance Laws In The United States, Caitlin T. Gaines
Catholic University Law Review
Jurisdictions around the United States have adopted, and are considering adopting, fair chance laws, also known as “ban the box” laws, to improve access to employment opportunities for those with criminal histories. For years, individuals with criminal records – approximately one in four U.S. adults – have been disadvantaged when employers heavily rely upon criminal background checks during the hiring process. Now, with the proliferation of fair chance laws which require employers to avoid considering criminal history in hiring decisions, public and private employers are faced with implementation concerns as they adapt their hiring practices to ensure compliance with the …

This paper investigates the perceptions of the New Zealand public towards the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system, a public-facing earthquake early warning system. Specifically, it examines the public’s continuance intention towards the AEA system and the influencing factors of satisfaction, confirmation, perceived usefulness, and perceived trust. To gather insights into the public’s perceptions regarding the AEA system, this study distributed online surveys following two separate earthquake alert events on 12 October and 22 October 2021. A total of 524 and 671 participants responded to the two events’ surveys, providing valuable data for analysis and exploration. Structural Equation Modelling of the …

Compelling Libya: Operation El Dorado Canyon As Coercive Diplomacy And Counterterrorism, Ronald Tracy Boyd
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
On Tuesday morning, 11 September 2001, the United States was attacked by a small terrorist cell from a group called al-Qaeda. On that day, the United States was at war with terror. However, this was not the first time the United States dealt with terrorism. Thomas Jefferson sent a fleet of warships from the fledgling US Navy and a contingent of US Marines to deal with the Barbary Pirates operating on the "shores of Tripoli," the terrorists of the day. It is interesting that another president, Ronald Reagan, also sent a contingent of US Air Force and US Navy aircraft …
The Impact Of Bail Reform On Arrest Rates For Aggravated Assault In Two Cities, Brion P. Gilbride
The Impact Of Bail Reform On Arrest Rates For Aggravated Assault In Two Cities, Brion P. Gilbride
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
With the recent push to implement bail reform in various U.S. cities and states, the impact of such reform was studied using aggravated assault arrest statistics for Philadelphia, a city that implemented bail reform via prosecutorial discretion, and for Pittsburgh, which had not implemented bail reform. Using the time period of January 2017 through December 2019, a quantitative analysis was completed on aggravated assault arrest counts in both cities to ascertain whether the removal of bail as a deterrent caused aggravated assault arrests to increase. Using a t-test, linear regression, and ANOVA, it was determined that bail reform had minimal …

Drug Courts: The Risk Of An Increased Number Of Drug-Related Arrests And Long Jail Sentences, Wayne A. Comstock
Drug Courts: The Risk Of An Increased Number Of Drug-Related Arrests And Long Jail Sentences, Wayne A. Comstock
University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review
In June 1971, President Richard Nixon declared a War on Drugs. As the War on Drugs continued throughout the 1980s, drug-related convictions increased, leading to overcrowding in prisons across the United States. Drug courts operate as an alternative to incarceration in which criminal defendants enter court mandated drug treatment programs. Judges monitor the progress of drug court participants through scheduled status hearings. However, contrary to their purpose, drug courts may contribute to incarceration by presenting the risk of an increased number of drug-related arrests in those jurisdictions that have implemented drug courts and long jail sentences imposed as sanctions for …

Like Treating The Symptom Rather Than The Cause - The Omission Of Courses Over Terrorism In Nsa Designated Institutions, Ida L. Oesteraas
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The National Security Agency (NSA) awards Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) designations to institutions that commit to producing cybersecurity professionals who will work in careers that reduce vulnerabilities in our national infrastructure. A review of the curricula in the 327 institutions and their degree programs reveal that only two programs offer a required course about terrorism. Given the fluid nature of terrorism and its threat to national infrastructure, the omission is concerning. It is recommended that NSA-certified cybersecurity programs begin implementing educational content that aim to teach about this emerging crime and justice issue. One suggestion is to embrace the …
